How to Fix Error 0x000019F6 on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x000019F6 is the Win32 code ERROR_LOG_INCONSISTENT_SECURITY: Windows has detected that security settings on an event log and the objects that contain it do not agree. It is an Event Log consistency problem, not proof of malware or a generic activation failure.

Identify the affected log, preserve its records, then work through Windows Update troubleshooting, system-file repair, controlled log maintenance, and recovery options in that order.

What 0x000019F6 means

Microsoft’s Win32 error reference defines 0x000019F6 as ERROR_LOG_INCONSISTENT_SECURITY and describes it as: “Security on the log and its containers is inconsistent.” In practical terms, the Event Log service cannot reconcile the permissions or security metadata on a channel with the related objects it relies on. The message may appear when Event Viewer opens a log, when software writes an event, or when a service tries to query a channel.

The number does not identify one universal trigger. It does not by itself show that Windows Update caused the problem, that an event-log file is irreparably corrupt, or that the computer is infected. Recent updates, policy changes, driver installations, interrupted servicing, or damage limited to one channel are useful clues to record, but the code alone cannot distinguish among them.

Scope matters. If only one custom or Applications and Services log fails while other channels work, concentrate on that channel. If several classic logs fail, Event Viewer cannot open any channel, or the Windows Event Log service repeatedly stops, treat the issue as a wider system or policy problem and preserve diagnostics before making destructive changes.

Record the context before changing anything

Write down the exact message, the log name, and the action that produced it. Capture the Event Viewer details if they are available, including the channel path and any accompanying error numbers. Note whether the failure began after a Windows update, a security-policy change, a driver or hardware change, a restore operation, or an unexpected shutdown.

  • Check whether one log or every log is affected. Try Windows Logs > Application, Windows Logs > System, and the channel named in the error.
  • Record whether the Event Log service is running and whether other applications can write events.
  • Use an administrator account for repairs, but do not change permissions simply because the account is elevated.
  • If the records may be needed for an investigation, export them before clearing, renaming, or rebuilding anything.

This short inventory prevents a common mistake: deleting the only copy of the events needed to determine what changed.

Run the supported Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft documents a built-in troubleshooter that can diagnose and attempt to fix Windows Update problems. Use it even when the error first appeared in Event Viewer; an update or servicing failure can be relevant context, but the troubleshooter does not prove that Update is the root cause.

Windows 11

  1. Open Get Help from the Start menu.
  2. Search for Windows Update troubleshooter and run the guided diagnostic.
  3. Allow the tool to apply any recommended correction.
  4. Restart Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  2. Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and follow its prompts.
  3. Restart, then return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

If the troubleshooter reports that it could not make a correction, keep its result with your notes. Do not repeatedly run it while changing unrelated permissions; that makes the sequence harder to diagnose.

Check hardware, drivers, storage, and startup state

When 0x000019F6 accompanies crashes, restarts, or a generally unstable system, use Microsoft’s broader Windows client troubleshooting sequence before resetting a log.

Remove recent hardware and test a minimal setup

Disconnect newly added USB devices, adapters, storage, or expansion hardware, then restart. If the error disappears, reconnect one item at a time. This does not prove that a device caused the security inconsistency, but it can reveal a driver or device change that coincided with it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Look for warning icons, disabled devices, or a device that appeared immediately before the problem.
  3. Open the device’s Properties and read the status on the General tab.
  4. Record the device name and driver date before uninstalling or rolling back anything.

Install current drivers from the device or computer manufacturer when a driver problem is confirmed. Avoid removing several drivers at once; you need to know which change affected the log service.

Verify free disk space

Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage on Windows 10. Ensure the system volume has room for update staging, event-log growth, and temporary repair files. Low space can complicate servicing and recovery even though it is not a documented, specific cause of 0x000019F6.

Try Safe Mode

  1. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
  4. Check whether Event Viewer can open the affected channel in that minimal environment.

If the error occurs only during a normal boot, a third-party service or driver becomes a more plausible lead. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent repair; return to normal startup after testing.

Repair Windows component and system files

Corrupted servicing components or protected system files can make several Windows services behave unpredictably. Microsoft’s standard repair tools are DISM and SFC. They are not documented as a guaranteed, code-specific cure, but they are appropriate when the error is accompanied by crashes, failed updates, or other system-file symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  3. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow.
  4. Restart Windows and test the same Event Viewer operation again.

SFC reports whether it found and repaired protected files. If it says that some files could not be repaired, keep the exact result and continue to the recovery or support stage rather than repeating the command indefinitely. Run both commands from an elevated console; a non-administrator window may refuse the operation.

Inspect and preserve the affected event log

Do not clear a log until you have decided that its records are no longer needed. Exporting first gives you a copy for troubleshooting and support.

Identify the channel and inspect its configuration

  1. Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt.
  2. List channel names with wevtutil el.
  3. Inspect the configuration of the affected channel with wevtutil gl <LogName>, replacing the placeholder with the exact name shown by Event Viewer. Keep quotation marks around names that contain spaces.
  4. Compare the result with a functioning channel. Record the log file path, enabled state, retention setting, and any access-related error returned by the command.

The output helps confirm that you are working on the intended channel. It does not authorize changing its security descriptor; a descriptor copied from another log can make the inconsistency worse.

Export the records

In Event Viewer, right-click the affected log and choose Save All Events As, then save an EVTX file to another location. If Event Viewer cannot open it, use:

wevtutil epl <LogName> C:UsersPublicDocumentsAffectedLog-backup.evtx

Replace both placeholders with a valid channel name and a destination that has enough free space. Confirm that the EVTX file exists and can be opened on another system or by your support contact before proceeding.

Clear only a confirmed, exported log

A third-party article published July 17, 2026 and updated August 20, 2026 describes stopping the Event Log service, clearing a named channel with wevtutil, and rebuilding a damaged log file. This is secondary guidance, not a universal Microsoft fix for 0x000019F6. Use it only when you have identified the channel, exported its records, and accepted the loss of the live copy.

  1. Try the least destructive option first: in Event Viewer, right-click the confirmed channel, choose Clear Log, and confirm only after checking the export.
  2. If Event Viewer cannot perform the operation, an elevated console can clear the channel with wevtutil cl <LogName>.
  3. Restart the computer and test whether Windows creates and writes to the channel normally.

On some systems the Event Log service cannot be stopped because other services depend on it. If Windows refuses to stop it, do not force termination or delete files from the event-log directory. A forced deletion can remove evidence, break channel registration, or leave additional logs unusable.

When a file-level rebuild is justified

If a single exported log remains unusable after a normal clear, and you have a verified backup, obtain guidance from Microsoft or the affected software vendor before moving its underlying EVTX file. File paths and permissions differ by channel and Windows edition. Do not rename or delete an entire event-log directory, and do not apply a security descriptor copied from an online example without vendor-specific instructions.

Check policy and permission changes without guessing

The error definition points to a mismatch between a log and its containers, so a policy or permission change is worth investigating. On a work or school computer, domain or local policy may restore a setting after you change it. Ask the administrator whether a security baseline, endpoint-management rule, or recent policy deployment touched event-log permissions.

On a personal computer, review the timing of any cleanup utility, hardening script, registry modification, or system migration. Restore the last known-good configuration only when you know what was changed. Avoid granting broad permissions to Everyone, disabling auditing, or replacing an event-log security descriptor with text copied from a forum. Those actions can hide the symptom while weakening system auditing.

If the issue affects only a vendor-created channel, consult that vendor’s documentation for the channel’s required service account and security model. If it affects Microsoft’s core Application and System logs, keep the diagnostics and use Microsoft support rather than improvising ACL changes.

Use System Restore or another recovery option

If the error began after a driver, policy, or software change and the earlier steps did not help, Microsoft’s Windows client guidance includes System Restore and other Windows recovery options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R, type rstrui.exe, and press Enter, or open Settings > System > Recovery and choose the available recovery entry.
  2. Select a restore point dated before the first occurrence, if one exists.
  3. Review the affected programs and drivers, then start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
  4. Check Event Viewer after the process completes. Personal files are not the target of System Restore, but applications and drivers installed after the restore point may be removed.

If System Restore is unavailable or fails, use the recovery environment’s documented repair options and ensure that important files are backed up first. A reset or reinstall is a last resort for a broad, persistent failure, not a first response to one inconsistent log.

Decide when to escalate

Contact Microsoft support or the relevant device/software vendor when multiple channels fail, permissions revert repeatedly, DISM and SFC cannot complete, the Event Log service will not stay running, or recovery changes do not alter the behavior. Provide the exact code, affected channel, export, command output, update history, and a timeline of hardware or policy changes.

Preserve a copy of the System and Application logs that still open, the exported affected channel, and the results of the Windows Update troubleshooter. Do not send credentials, private event data, or full disk images unless the support organization specifically requests them through its secure process.

How the repair choices compare

Approach Best use Evidence handling Risk to log data Administrative access Support status
Windows Update troubleshooter Update failures or servicing changes that coincide with the error Leaves event records in place Does not clear a log Windows may request elevation Microsoft-supported diagnostic
DISM followed by SFC Crashes, failed updates, or suspected system-file damage Leaves event records in place Does not clear a log Elevated Terminal or Command Prompt Microsoft-supported repair tools
Export, then clear one channel A confirmed channel that remains unusable and whose records are no longer needed live Preserves an EVTX copy when export succeeds Deletes the live channel contents Usually required wevtutil is built in; the code-specific sequence is secondary guidance
Safe Mode and Device Manager review Errors tied to startup, hardware, or a recently changed driver Leaves event records in place No intentional log deletion Administrator may be needed for driver changes Microsoft troubleshooting guidance
System Restore or recovery Persistent problems that began after a known change Back up important data first May remove later drivers or applications Recovery environment or administrator access Microsoft recovery path

What Microsoft’s stop-error statistics do—and do not—say

Microsoft’s broader Windows client troubleshooting article attributes 70% of the stop-error crashes it analyzed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to unknown causes. Those percentages describe that analyzed stop-error group; they are not a prevalence rate or cause distribution for 0x000019F6. No authoritative Microsoft statistic establishes how often this event-log code occurs or assigns it to one root cause. Use the percentages only as a reason to check drivers and hardware when crashes are present, never as proof that a driver caused this error.
