Error 0x000010D6 means Windows or the backup software rejected a tape-cleaning cartridge because its media identifier was not accepted as a valid cleaner. Microsoft’s Win32 error table names the code ERROR_INVALID_CLEANER and defines it as: “The media identifier does not represent a valid cleaner.” This is normally a tape-drive, tape-library, or backup-application problem—not a general Windows printer error.
Stop the current tape job, eject and firmly reseat the cleaning cartridge, then verify that its generation and cartridge-memory identifier match the exact drive. If the same known-compatible cartridge is rejected, gather the drive model, firmware revision, library details, and backup-software version for the hardware vendor’s diagnostics or support team.

What error 0x000010D6 means
The hexadecimal code 0x000010D6 is the Win32 value for ERROR_INVALID_CLEANER. The operating system or an application has identified the inserted media as a cleaning cartridge candidate, but the cartridge’s identifier does not pass the drive or library’s validity check.

Why a tape drive rejects a cleaning cartridge
Wrong LTO generation or media type
Cleaning cartridges are generation-specific. A drive may reject media intended for another LTO generation, a different drive family, or a different cleaning technology. Identify the exact drive model and the generation it supports before buying or inserting replacement media.
Unreadable cartridge-memory identifier
Many tape cartridges carry an electronic memory identifier. If the drive cannot read that identifier, it may treat the cartridge as invalid even when the physical cartridge looks correct. Contamination, damage, age, or a failed memory component can produce this result.
Exhausted cleaning cartridge
Cleaning media is consumable. Once the cartridge has reached its allowed number of cleaning cycles, a drive may reject it rather than run another cycle. The remaining-use count depends on the cartridge and drive instructions; there is no universal number that applies to every model.
Defective, counterfeit, or damaged media
A defective cartridge, damaged shell, worn leader, or unreliable seller can cause the same identifier error. A product described only as a generic “cleaning tape” may not satisfy the drive’s requirements. Seller authenticity matters because a cartridge that is mislabeled or previously used can appear compatible while failing recognition.

Drive, library, firmware, or application state
If a known-compatible cartridge fails repeatedly, the problem may be in the drive’s reader, the library’s media-handling path, firmware, or the backup application’s communication with the hardware. Firmware can affect media recognition, but Microsoft does not publish a universal firmware fix for 0x000010D6.
Before troubleshooting: protect the tape job and record details
Do not force a cartridge into a drive or pull it out while the mechanism is moving. First stop the backup, restore, inventory, or cleaning job through the tape-management or backup application. Wait for the drive to report that it is idle, then use the application or drive controls to eject the cartridge.
Write down these details before changing anything:
- The exact tape-drive model and, if applicable, the library or autoloader model.
- The LTO generation and the cleaning-cartridge part number or label.
- The drive firmware revision.
- The backup or tape-management application and its version.
- Whether the cartridge has worked in this drive before and how many cleaning cycles it has completed, if that information is available.
- The time of the failure and any companion message shown by the drive, library, or application.
These details make later vendor diagnostics much more useful and prevent an otherwise compatible cartridge from being replaced unnecessarily.

Step-by-step fixes
1. Stop the active job and eject the cartridge normally
- Cancel or pause the backup, restore, inventory, or cleaning operation in the controlling application.
- Wait until the drive or library indicates that the tape is no longer mounted or moving.
- Choose the application’s Eject, Unload, or equivalent command, or use the drive’s documented eject control.
- Remove the cartridge completely. Inspect it for a cracked shell, damaged label, dirt, or other visible damage.
This is the safest first action because it is reversible and does not alter Windows, firmware, or the backup catalog.

2. Reseat the same cartridge
- Confirm that the cartridge is oriented exactly as shown by the drive or library label.
- Insert it firmly until the mechanism accepts it; do not push against resistance.
- Allow the drive to load and identify the cartridge without starting a cleaning cycle immediately.
- If the application reports the same invalid-cleaner message, eject the cartridge again and continue with compatibility checks rather than repeatedly retrying it.
A single failed load can result from an incomplete insertion or a transient read problem. Repeated rejection points more strongly to media compatibility, cartridge memory, or hardware.
3. Confirm the exact drive generation and required cleaner
- Read the model number from the drive, library slot, or management interface.
- Confirm the supported LTO generation in the drive or library documentation.
- Check the cleaning-media requirement for that exact model, including any vendor-specific cartridge-memory or identifier requirement.
- Compare the requirement with the cartridge label and part number, not just the seller’s broad description.
When searching a marketplace, “LTO cleaning cartridge” is the honest general phrase. Select the exact generation and model-compatible product only after identifying the drive. Do not assume that a cartridge for one LTO generation is interchangeable with every other generation.
4. Replace suspect media with a generation-matched cartridge
If the original cartridge is exhausted, unreadable, damaged, or of uncertain origin, obtain a replacement intended for the exact drive generation. Compare the following before purchase:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| LTO generation | The cartridge generation is explicitly supported by the drive. | A generation mismatch can make the identifier invalid even when the cartridge physically fits. |
| Drive or vendor compatibility | The product description names the relevant drive family or requirements. | Some drives and libraries enforce media rules beyond physical fit. |
| Media identifier or cartridge memory | The cartridge includes the identifier or memory type required by the drive. | An unreadable or unsupported identifier can trigger ERROR_INVALID_CLEANER. |
| Remaining cleaning uses | The seller or packaging states the cartridge’s usage status when that information is provided. | An exhausted cartridge may be refused; a universal remaining-use figure is not established. |
| Seller authenticity | Packaging, part number, and seller reputation are consistent with genuine media. | Mislabeled, counterfeit, or previously used media can fail recognition. |
Keep the failed cartridge aside and label it with the date and drive that rejected it. That prevents it from being reintroduced into another cleaning job before it has been evaluated.

5. Test the replacement through the normal application workflow
- Insert the confirmed compatible cartridge while the drive is idle.
- Wait for the drive or library to complete its identification process.
- Start the cleaning operation from the backup or tape-management application recommended for the hardware.
- Monitor the job for a successful load, cleaning completion, and normal unload.
- Record whether the replacement works, including the cartridge part number and drive firmware revision.
If the replacement succeeds, the original cartridge was likely incompatible, exhausted, defective, or unreadable. Do not reuse it simply because the drive accepted another cartridge.
6. Check the drive or library diagnostics
When a known-compatible cartridge is rejected, use the diagnostics supplied for the exact drive or library. Record the model, firmware revision, slot or drive bay, cartridge identifier if displayed, and the full error text. Run only the diagnostic or cleaning procedure documented for that hardware; do not substitute an unrelated Windows repair utility.
If the equipment is managed through a library console, check whether the error follows the cartridge to another compatible drive or stays with one drive. That comparison can help the vendor distinguish media failure from a drive-reader or library-handling problem, but follow the vendor’s procedure before moving media between production devices.
7. Check firmware and backup-software compatibility with the vendor
Contact the drive or library vendor with the evidence you collected. Ask whether the installed firmware recognizes the cartridge generation and whether the backup application version is supported. Firmware updates can change media-recognition behavior, but there is no Microsoft-published, universal firmware update that fixes every instance of 0x000010D6.

Before applying firmware, verify the exact model and revision, read the vendor’s interruption and rollback instructions, and ensure that no tape job is running. A failed or mismatched firmware update can create a larger hardware outage, so this step belongs after the low-risk media checks and should follow the vendor’s documented process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Windows troubleshooting can—and cannot—do
Windows 10 and Windows 11 host the backup software and may show the message, but the code itself identifies an invalid cleaner media identifier. Microsoft’s general Windows printer guidance focuses on printer drivers and the print spooler; it does not map 0x000010D6 to printers. Therefore, printer-driver resets, spooler restarts, registry cleaners, and generic “DLL repair” tools should not be presented as proven fixes for this tape-media error.
You can still document whether Windows and the backup application continue to see the tape device after ejecting the cartridge. If the device disappears, reports a separate hardware error, or cannot load any known-good cartridge, include that observation in the vendor support case. Treat those observations as diagnostic clues, not as evidence that a Windows registry change will make an invalid cleaner identifier valid.
Choosing the right remediation path
| Situation | Next action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One cartridge is rejected once | Stop the job, eject, inspect, and reseat it once. | This is the most reversible explanation and action. |
| The cartridge is from an uncertain source or has unknown use history | Replace it with genuine, generation-matched cleaning media. | Media status and authenticity cannot be established reliably from appearance alone. |
| The cartridge generation does not match the drive | Use the cleaner specified for the exact drive generation. | Physical fit does not prove identifier compatibility. |
| Several known-compatible cartridges fail in one drive | Collect logs and request drive-specific diagnostics and firmware guidance. | A repeated failure suggests a drive, reader, library, firmware, or application issue. |
| The same cartridge works in a compatible drive but not in one bay | Escalate that bay or drive with model, firmware, and test results. | The controlled comparison gives the vendor a hardware-specific lead. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling it a printer error: the code’s documented name is
ERROR_INVALID_CLEANER, and its definition concerns a media identifier. - Buying by appearance alone: two cartridges can look alike while targeting different generations or identifier requirements.
- Repeating a rejected cartridge indefinitely: repeated retries do not repair an exhausted or unreadable cartridge and can delay a needed hardware diagnosis.
- Forcing the mechanism: use the documented eject control and never overcome mechanical resistance by hand.
- Updating firmware blindly: confirm the model, current revision, supported update path, and maintenance window with the vendor first.
- Deleting registry entries or resetting printer services: these actions are not established fixes for an invalid tape-cleaner identifier and can create unrelated problems.
- Omitting evidence from a support request: a vendor needs the exact drive model, firmware, cartridge generation, application, and reproduction details to diagnose the failure.
How to document a successful fix
After a compatible cartridge completes a cleaning cycle, record its part number, generation, seller, date of use, drive model, firmware revision, and the application used. If the cartridge has a usage log or remaining-use indication, record that as well. Keep the failed cartridge segregated until the vendor confirms whether it should be discarded.
Maintain the same level of detail for future failures: note whether the error occurs with one cartridge, every cartridge, one drive bay, or the entire library. This pattern is more informative than the hexadecimal code alone and helps separate a media problem from a hardware or software problem.
When to escalate immediately
Escalate to the drive or library vendor instead of experimenting further if the cartridge will not eject normally, the drive reports mechanical damage, multiple known-compatible cartridges fail, the device vanishes from the management interface, or a firmware operation is required. Provide the recorded model, firmware, cartridge details, application version, timestamps, and any diagnostic output. The exact corrective action depends on that equipment combination; Microsoft’s definition establishes what the code means, not a universal repair for every tape platform.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install only official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Bottom line
Fix 0x000010D6 by treating it as a tape-cleaner identification problem: stop the job, eject and reseat the cartridge, verify the exact LTO generation and identifier requirements, and replace suspect media with a genuine cartridge matched to the drive. If known-compatible media still fails, stop changing Windows settings and move to drive/library diagnostics, firmware review, and vendor support with complete hardware and software details.
