Error 0x00000FD5 is the Windows status code PEERDIST_ERROR_NO_MORE. Microsoft’s status table defines the code, but the code alone does not identify the failed application, service, or action. Capture where it appeared first, then use the repair path for that component. Printer and printer-installation cases need a different sequence from an application, update, or installer error.
What error 0x00000FD5 means
Windows maps hexadecimal 0x00000FD5 to the symbolic status name PEERDIST_ERROR_NO_MORE. That mapping tells you what status was returned; it is not, by itself, a complete diagnosis. The same code can be surfaced by an application dialog, Event Viewer, Reliability Monitor, an installer, an update workflow, or a print operation.

No authoritative source establishes how often this code occurs, which Windows 10 or Windows 11 builds are affected, or a universal fix. Do not treat the code as proof that a printer, a network, malware, or a particular Windows release is at fault. The location and timing of the message are the evidence that determines the next step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIdentify the component before changing anything
Record the exact context
Write down the application or Windows component, the action that immediately preceded the message, the date and time, and every line of adjacent text. Note whether the operation involved printing, adding a printer, installing software, applying an update, connecting to a network resource, or simply opening an application. Preserve the exact capitalization and hexadecimal form of the code.

If the dialog offers a “details” or “copy” option, copy the complete text rather than only the number. A nearby module name, printer queue name, service name, or second error can identify the owner of the failure.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs, then inspect Application and System around the recorded time.
- Open events whose level, source, or description matches the failing action. Look for the error code, the application or service name, and any accompanying event ID.
- Use Save Selected Events if you need to send the details to a vendor or support technician.
An event that names a print service or printer driver supports a printer workflow. An event naming a particular application, installer, or update points to that component instead.
Check Reliability Monitor
- Open Start and search for View reliability history.
- Select the day marked with a red failure or a relevant warning.
- Open the event details and record the failed application, faulting module, and any error text.
Reliability Monitor can show whether the code appeared once during a single task or alongside repeated application, driver, or Windows failures. That distinction helps you avoid changing unrelated system settings.

When the error is not related to printing
Repair the application that produced the message
If the dialog belongs to one application and no printer action was underway, update the application to its current supported release. Use the application’s built-in repair option when it provides one, or use Windows’ installed-app repair feature if that option is available for the program. Reopen the application and repeat the same action.
Consult the application vendor with the exact dialog text, the event details, the application version, and the Windows edition and version. This is more useful than reporting only the hexadecimal code because the status table does not identify the application-level cause.
Handle installer and update failures through their owning component
For an installer or update, capture the product name, package version, and timestamp from the dialog and logs. Retry only after confirming that the original operation is the one failing; do not run printer commands simply because the number resembles a printer error reported elsewhere. Use the installer’s repair, rollback, or support instructions and provide the saved Event Viewer details if escalation is required.
Printer and printer-setup fixes
Use this section only when the code appeared while printing, adding a printer, or managing a printer queue. Microsoft’s supported Windows 11 and Windows 10 sequence is to run the Get Help printer troubleshooter, power-cycle the printer, verify the connection, remove and re-add the printer, install a compatible current driver, and reset the Print Spooler when queued jobs are involved.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute1. Run the Get Help printer troubleshooter
- Open the Get Help app from Start.
- Search for printer troubleshooter and follow the guided checks for the affected printer.
- Apply a suggested change only when it matches the printer and symptom you recorded.
Run the same print operation again after the troubleshooter finishes. If the code appears in a non-printing application, return to that application’s repair path instead of continuing with printer changes.
2. Power-cycle the printer and check the connection
- Cancel or pause the current print job if the printer’s controls allow it.
- Turn the printer off, disconnect its power for a short interval, reconnect it, and turn it back on.
- For USB, reseat the cable directly at the printer and the computer; try another USB port if the device is not detected.
- For a network printer, confirm that the printer and PC are on the intended network and that the printer reports an online or ready state.
A power cycle clears a temporary device state; it does not replace a driver repair or a spooler reset when Windows still holds a damaged queue.
3. Remove and add the printer again
Removing a printer clears its Windows registration, so make sure you know how it connects and have the model name available before proceeding.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer and choose Remove or Remove device.
- Restart Windows if the device remains listed or a pending queue cannot be removed.
- Return to the same Printers & scanners page, choose Add device, and complete detection or manual setup for the printer’s connection type.
After it is added, verify that the selected queue uses the intended model rather than a similarly named generic queue.

4. Install a current, compatible printer driver
Microsoft notes that most printers require the latest driver to work well. First identify your Windows edition, version, and system type. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > About; Windows 10 provides the corresponding information under Settings > System > About. Record whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit where shown.
Obtain the driver through Windows or directly from the printer manufacturer. Select the package that names your printer model and matches the Windows edition/version and architecture. Do not install a package intended for a different model merely because its name is similar.
- Disconnect the printer only if the manufacturer’s installer requests it.
- Run the driver installer with the printer model and connection type selected correctly.
- Reconnect or rediscover the printer when prompted.
- Open the printer’s queue and retry the original operation.
If printing began failing immediately after a driver update, consider rolling back instead. Open Device Manager, expand the printer or related device category, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when Windows makes that option available. A rollback is appropriate only when the timing and device evidence point to the recent update.
5. Reset the Print Spooler and its queued files
The spooler reset is for a print-related failure, especially when jobs are stuck, the queue will not open, or Windows cannot remove a printer. It does not address an unrelated application or installer error.
Using the Services console
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Stop.
- In File Explorer, enter
%WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERSin the address bar. - Delete the files inside that folder. Do not delete the
PRINTERSfolder itself. - Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.
Using an elevated terminal
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands one at a time:
net stop spooler
del /Q /F "%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERS*"
net start spooler
The delete command removes queued files, so pending print jobs will need to be submitted again. If the stop or delete command reports an access error, close printer software, confirm that the terminal is elevated, and retry rather than deleting a different folder.
6. Print a test page and repeat the original task
Print a Windows test page only after the issue has been narrowed to a printer. Use the printer’s properties or queue option for Print Test Page. A successful test page shows that Windows can communicate with the queue; it does not prove that every application’s print workflow is repaired. Finally, repeat the exact action that originally produced 0x00000FD5 and record whether the code returns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match the driver to Windows before reinstalling it
Confirm the Windows release and architecture
Driver compatibility depends on the Windows edition and version as well as system type. Record those values from Settings > System > About before downloading anything. A driver that works on one Windows edition, release, or architecture is not automatically suitable for another.
Choose the source carefully
Use Windows-provided drivers or the printer manufacturer’s driver for the exact model. Compare the currently installed driver version with the version offered for your system. If the failure started after an update, keep the previous version in mind as a rollback candidate instead of repeatedly installing newer packages.
Prefer reversible changes first
Repairing an application, removing and re-adding a printer, reinstalling a matching driver, and rolling back a recent driver are easier to undo than broad system changes. Make one change at a time and retest so you know which action affected the result.
When the code persists
Preserve evidence
- The complete error text and the exact hexadecimal code.
- The application, installer, update, printer model, or service involved.
- The timestamp and the action that triggered the error.
- Relevant Application and System events from Event Viewer.
- The Reliability Monitor entry, if one exists.
- Windows edition, version, system type, and the current and previously installed driver versions.
- Whether the printer test page worked after the repair sequence.
Contact the owner of the failing component
For an application-only failure, contact that application’s support channel. For a printer driver or printer queue failure, contact the printer manufacturer or Windows support with the evidence above. For an installer or update failure, contact the software publisher or the Windows update support channel responsible for that package. The code’s status-table definition is useful context, but the owning component’s logs determine the actual remedy.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every occurrence is a printer error: 0x00000FD5 is also seen in application, installer, update, and other workflows; classify the context first.
- Deleting spooler files for a non-printing failure: the reset affects queued print jobs and cannot repair an unrelated application.
- Installing a near-match driver: model, Windows edition/version, and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture all matter.
- Changing several components at once: one-at-a-time changes preserve a useful cause-and-effect trail.
- Reporting only the number: support needs the complete dialog, event details, timestamp, and failing action.
- Expecting a test page to validate every workflow: it checks the printer queue path, not an application’s custom print integration.
Quick decision guide
| Situation | Most appropriate next action | Why this order is safer |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown origin | Record context, then inspect Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor. | It identifies the component before you make changes. |
| One application only | Update or repair the application and consult its vendor. | The status code does not establish a Windows-wide or printer-wide fault. |
| Printer connection or setup | Get Help printer troubleshooter, power-cycle, verify connection, remove and re-add. | These checks address detection and queue registration before deeper changes. |
| Printer driver suspected | Match Windows edition/version and architecture, then install or roll back the appropriate driver. | Driver compatibility is a direct factor in printer operation. |
| Jobs stuck in a printer queue | Stop Print Spooler, clear files in the specified PRINTERS folder, and start it again. | It targets queued data without applying unrelated system repairs. |
| Failure remains after the relevant sequence | Save logs and escalate to the component owner. | The code alone cannot identify a universal fix. |
Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional shortcut for the driver portion of this process: it scans more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, installs official drivers, shows current and recommended versions, and provides driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 with a two-day free trial and no credit card, followed by a subscription; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Final checklist
- Confirm that the code is
0x00000FD5/PEERDIST_ERROR_NO_MOREand record where it appeared. - Use Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor to identify the failing component.
- Follow the application, installer, update, or printer path that matches that evidence.
- For printers, complete the troubleshooter, connection, re-add, driver, and spooler steps in order.
- Retest the original action and preserve the resulting logs if the error remains.
