How to Fix Error 0x00000FA0 on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x00000FA0 is Win32 error 4000, named ERROR_WINS_INTERNAL. Microsoft defines it as “WINS encountered an error while processing the command.” It usually points to a failed Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) or related RPC operation, not to one universal Windows crash.

The correct repair depends on where you saw the value and whether Windows still starts. Confirm that the complete code is 0x00000FA0, rather than 0x000000FA, then follow the matching branch below.

What error 0x00000FA0 means

Windows error values are often displayed in hexadecimal. The value 0x00000FA0 equals decimal 4000. Microsoft’s System Error Codes table assigns 4000 (0xFA0) the name ERROR_WINS_INTERNAL and the message “WINS encountered an error while processing the command.”

WINS is the Windows Internet Name Service, a legacy name-resolution service used mainly in older Windows networks. The code does not identify one specific setting, server, driver, or file. It tells you that a WINS-related command failed somewhere in the call chain. The originating program, service, RPC operation, and preceding log entry are needed to identify the actual cause.

Microsoft’s WINS protocol specification gives a narrower example: an ERROR_WINS_INTERNAL result can be returned when processing a WINSINTF_E_CONFIG command fails. In practical terms, a configuration, status, replication, or administrative request may have reached the WINS component and then failed while being processed.

Do not confuse 0x00000FA0 with 0x000000FA

The two strings differ by a zero and represent different errors. Microsoft documents 0x000000FA as the HTTP_DRIVER_CORRUPTED bug check. That is a stop-code condition, whereas 0x00000FA0 is Win32 error 4000 associated with WINS processing. Copy the entire value and the message around it before choosing a repair path.

Choose the correct troubleshooting path

Use the place where the code appeared as your first decision point. A USB recovery drive is appropriate only when Windows will not boot; it is not a general fix for every appearance of 0x00000FA0.

Where the code appears Does Windows boot? Start with Most useful evidence

Step 1: Capture the context before changing anything

A numeric system error can be produced by software deep in a call stack. Changing settings first can erase the evidence that identifies the failing operation. Write down the following information while the message is still visible:

  • The complete code, including every leading zero: 0x00000FA0.
  • The exact sentence next to the code and the name of the application, service, or administration tool.
  • The date and time, computer name, and the account or server involved, if shown.
  • The action that triggered it: for example, opening a console, changing a WINS setting, checking status, attempting replication, or starting an application.
  • Whether the same action fails every time or only occasionally.
  • Anything changed immediately beforehand, such as a driver, hardware device, Windows update, network configuration, or security policy.

If Windows is running, open Event Viewer and inspect the Windows Logs and Applications and Services Logs branches around the recorded time. Read the entries immediately before the 0xFA0 event as well as the event containing it. The earlier entry often names the service, computer, RPC endpoint, or configuration object that the generic error code does not identify.

Microsoft recommends its Error Lookup tool for translating system error values and documents the debugger command !err <code> for examining an error value in a debugging session. These tools can confirm that 4000 maps to ERROR_WINS_INTERNAL; they do not, by themselves, repair a failed WINS operation.

Step 2: If the error comes from WINS or an RPC operation

Use this branch when the message is in a WINS console, a WINS-related event, an RPC trace, or an administrative application that explicitly manages WINS. The value alone does not reveal whether configuration, status, replication, or another command failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the exact command

  1. Repeat the action only if doing so is safe and you can record its parameters. Note whether it is a configuration request, status query, replication action, or another administrative operation.
  2. Compare the timestamp with WINS, DNS, networking, and system events on both the local computer and the target server, when applicable.
  3. Look for a preceding authentication, access, name-resolution, RPC, database, or service-start failure. Treat that earlier event as a possible cause and the 0xFA0 value as the result reported to the caller.
  4. If the operation is a WINSINTF_E_CONFIG request, preserve the configuration values and the exact object being changed before attempting another edit. The protocol specification specifically associates 0xFA0 with an error while processing that command.

Check the service and the target computer

  • Confirm that the WINS-related service and the remote computer named in the operation are available. If your organization no longer uses WINS, determine whether an old tool, script, or application is still trying to call it.
  • Verify that the operation is being sent to the intended server and that the account has the permissions required for that administrative action.
  • Check whether the failure affects one command, one server, or every WINS request. A single failing configuration object suggests a narrower data or parameter problem; every request points more strongly to service, RPC, connectivity, or system-state trouble.
  • Do not delete WINS data, reset replication, or change network bindings solely because 0xFA0 appeared. The code does not specify which of those actions, if any, is appropriate.

Use the originating log to decide the next repair

If an event identifies a stopped service, address that service first and then retry the same operation once. If it identifies an RPC or connectivity failure, troubleshoot the connection and endpoint named in the event rather than changing unrelated Windows settings. If the log supplies no more detail, collect the application’s diagnostic or RPC log and escalate it to the administrator responsible for the WINS server or legacy network application.

Step 3: If an application shows 0x00000FA0 but Windows remains usable

An application can receive a Win32 error returned by a lower-level component. In this situation, the goal is to separate an application-specific failure from a system-wide one.

Determine whether the failure is repeatable

  1. Record the exact workflow that produces the message and whether it requires a particular document, account, server, or network location.
  2. Try an unrelated application. If only one program fails, preserve its error log and configuration rather than performing broad Windows repairs.
  3. If several programs fail during network or name-service operations, compare their timestamps with system and WINS-related events.
  4. Test the action after a normal restart. A one-time failure that does not return should still be documented, but repeated failures need the originating service or operation investigated.

Check recent changes

Review software, driver, hardware, and Windows updates installed immediately before the first occurrence. If the error began after a clearly identified change, use the product’s supported rollback or uninstall procedure and test again. Do not remove unrelated updates or drivers simply because their dates are nearby.

Preserve evidence for the application vendor or administrator

Supply the full message, process name, timestamp, action, Event Viewer entries, and whether the problem occurs on another computer or account. The decimal value 4000 is useful for searching logs, while the surrounding text and operation name usually determine the actionable fix.

Step 4: If 0x00000FA0 appears during a restart, blue screen, or black screen

When the computer repeatedly restarts or displays a stop screen, treat the boot or stability problem as the primary issue. Microsoft notes that hardware, drivers, and software can cause stop-code failures. Follow this sequence, changing one category at a time so you can identify what helped.

Remove recently added hardware

Shut down the computer and disconnect hardware added shortly before the failures began, using the manufacturer’s safe removal procedure. Leave essential input and display devices connected. If the restarts stop, reconnect devices one at a time and test between changes.

Try Safe Mode

Start Windows in Safe Mode, which loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the machine remains stable there but fails during a normal boot, a startup program, driver, or service becomes more likely than a physical component that is required in both modes. Use Safe Mode to copy important files and inspect the next steps without repeatedly exposing the system to a full crash.

Inspect Device Manager

  1. Open Device Manager and look for devices with warning icons.
  2. Prioritize devices installed or updated just before the first restart, especially those named in a crash message or event.
  3. For the relevant device, use the supported option to update, disable, or uninstall the driver.
  4. Restart normally after each focused change and record the result.

Do not disable every device at once. A broad change can hide the component that caused the failure and can leave the computer without networking, display, storage, or input support.

Check free disk space

Make sure the Windows system drive has enough free space for updates, logs, paging, and recovery operations. If the drive is nearly full, remove only files you recognize as safe to remove and preserve installation media, recovery files, and personal data. Low space can prevent repairs from completing even when it is not the original cause.

Install pending Windows updates

When Windows can stay running long enough, open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart when prompted. If the failure began immediately after a particular update, record its name and date before considering a supported recovery or uninstall option.

Use System Restore when the problem continues

If restore points exist, use System Restore to return system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier state. Select a restore point dated before the first failure and review the affected-program list before confirming. System Restore does not replace personal-file backups and does not undo every type of change.

Step 5: If Windows will not boot

Use this branch only when normal startup and the available Safe Mode path do not reach Windows. You need Windows installation media that matches the affected installation’s architecture and edition closely enough for recovery. If you do not have media, create or obtain it from a working computer before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Startup Repair

  1. Insert the Windows installation media and start the affected computer from it. Use the computer’s boot-device menu if it does not start from the media automatically.
  2. At Windows Setup, choose Repair your computer, not the option that begins a new installation.
  3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
  4. Allow the diagnostic process to complete, then restart without the media and test normal boot.

Startup Repair addresses boot-related problems; it cannot determine which WINS command failed inside a running network service. If the machine boots afterward but 0xFA0 returns in an application or log, use the WINS/RPC or application branch above.

Read the Startup Repair log

When Startup Repair reports that it could not repair the computer, return to Troubleshoot > Advanced options and open the recovery Command Prompt. Microsoft identifies the Startup Repair log as %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. Review it for the failed boot component, driver, or system file and copy the relevant lines before making another change.

Use Microsoft’s command-line boot and BCD procedure

If Startup Repair does not resolve the boot failure, Microsoft also documents command-line methods for repairing boot code and the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store from the recovery environment. Use the commands for the detected Windows partition, record each command’s output, and stop if the command reports that the partition or installation cannot be found. Blindly applying commands intended for a different drive layout can create a second boot problem.

Protect data before a deeper reset

If recovery tools still cannot start Windows, use the recovery environment to copy essential personal files to external storage before considering a reset or reinstall. A reset or clean installation is a separate decision and should not be treated as a specific cure for error 0x00000FA0.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to verify the result

After a repair, repeat the original action under the same conditions that first produced the message. Then check the relevant log for a new event at the test time. A successful boot does not prove that a WINS/RPC configuration problem is fixed, and the disappearance of one event does not prove that every underlying issue is resolved.

  • For a WINS or RPC issue, confirm that the same administrative command completes and that no new related event is logged.
  • For an application issue, repeat the exact workflow and confirm that other applications remain unaffected.
  • For a crash or restart issue, perform several normal restarts and test the hardware or driver that was changed.
  • For a non-booting computer, remove the installation media, verify normal startup, and retain the Startup Repair log and recovery notes.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the wrong code: 0x000000FA and 0x00000FA0 are not interchangeable.
  • Assuming the value is a complete diagnosis: 4000 identifies ERROR_WINS_INTERNAL, not the failed configuration item or RPC endpoint.
  • Running boot recovery on a working PC: installation media and Startup Repair belong to the non-booting branch.
  • Changing many drivers at once: make one focused change, restart, and record the outcome.
  • Ignoring the preceding event: the earlier authentication, service, connectivity, or application error may contain the actual cause.
  • Deleting configuration data without a record: preserve the original values and logs so an administrator can restore or compare them.
  • Expecting one command to fix every occurrence: the same numeric value can arise from different WINS, RPC, application, or boot contexts.

Optional shortcut after the manual checks

As an optional shortcut, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL problems; it also offers settings adjustments, temporary and cache-file cleanup, Windows setting and missing-update checks, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a category-based free trial of at least two days followed by a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
