Error 0x00000A2D is usually not a Windows blue-screen code. Microsoft defines hexadecimal 0x00000A2D as MaximumConnectionPoolsExceeded: “An RPC client has exceeded the defined limit of RPC connection pools.” It most often comes from an Exchange-connected application or service. Identify the program and log that emitted it before changing Windows settings; the right fix may belong to the application or Exchange administrator rather than to Windows itself.
What error 0x00000A2D means
The code belongs to Microsoft’s Exchange/RPC protocol error set. “RPC” means Remote Procedure Call, a way for one software component to request work from another component, locally or across a network. A connection pool is a managed group of reusable connections. MaximumConnectionPoolsExceeded means the RPC client has gone beyond the number of connection pools permitted by the component handling the request.

That definition does not identify one universal Windows defect. The same hexadecimal text can be displayed by an Exchange-aware application, an add-in, a service, or an installer that is communicating with an Exchange environment. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not use 0x00000A2D as a standard stop-code name. If an Outlook-related process or another business application reports it while Windows continues running, treat it first as an application or service communication problem.

First determine where the code came from
Record the complete context
Write down the full wording of the message, the application or service name, the date and time, and what you were doing immediately beforehand. Note whether Outlook, an Exchange mailbox, a calendar or contacts component, a synchronization client, or another RPC-connected program was active. Also record whether the message appeared once, repeats at regular intervals, or coincides with a freeze, restart, or blue screen.
- Application-only symptom: one program displays the code but Windows remains usable.
- Service or background symptom: a Windows service or scheduled component logs repeated failures without a full system crash.
- System-failure symptom: Windows freezes, restarts, or displays a stop screen at the same time.
- Setup or upgrade symptom: the code appears during Windows installation, feature updates, or an application installer.
Save a screenshot and, if possible, copy the text from the dialog. The exact process name is more useful than the hexadecimal value by itself.
Check Event Viewer and application logs
- Press
Windows, type Event Viewer, and open it. - Expand Windows Logs and select System. Also inspect Application for the same timestamp.
- Use Filter Current Log or sort by date and time. Look for the first RPC, Exchange, application, service, or restart event surrounding the error rather than only the final warning.
- Open a related event and use Copy to save its details. Record the source, event ID, level, computer name, and message.
- Check the affected program’s own logs as well. Many mail, synchronization, and enterprise applications keep diagnostic logs outside Event Viewer.
Export relevant events before clearing logs, reinstalling software, or restoring Windows. Preserving the original timestamps helps an application owner or Exchange administrator determine whether the limit was reached by a client, a service configuration, or a server-side condition.

| What you observe | Most appropriate first action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The code is logged only by an Exchange-connected application | Collect the application and Event Viewer details, then contact the application or Exchange administrator | The documented meaning is an RPC connection-pool limit; Windows repair commands cannot be assumed to change that limit |
| The code appears with a Windows freeze, restart, or blue screen | Follow the Windows crash sequence: remove recent hardware, use Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, update or remove the affected device, check disk space, install updates, and consider System Restore | Microsoft’s Windows guidance treats hardware, drivers, and software as possible causes of stop errors |
| The code appears during Windows setup or an upgrade | Disconnect nonessential external hardware, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, check permissions, install pending updates, and retry | Those are Microsoft’s installation and upgrade checks; first verify that the installer or an Exchange-connected component actually emitted 0x00000A2D |
| The source is unclear | Capture the message, identify the process in logs, and avoid irreversible changes | Reinstalling drivers or restoring Windows before identifying the source can erase useful evidence and may not affect an RPC pool limit |
When only an application or service reports 0x00000A2D
Test the application without changing Windows
Close and reopen the affected application once, then check whether the error returns during the same action. If the failure is limited to one mailbox, profile, account, or workflow, note that scope. A problem affecting one account or one service endpoint points toward the application’s connection management or the Exchange environment; a problem affecting every program at once is more likely to involve Windows, networking, or a broader service outage.

Do not assume that deleting a Windows cache, changing registry values, or running generic “repair” commands will remove a server-side pool limit. Those actions are not established fixes for this code. Keep the exported events and provide them to the application owner or Exchange administrator, who can correlate the client timestamp with server-side RPC and mailbox events.
What to give an administrator
- The exact code and message, including capitalization and punctuation.
- The application and version, Windows edition (Windows 10 or Windows 11), and whether the device is managed by an organization.
- The UTC or local timestamp and time zone.
- Whether the error affects one user, one mailbox, multiple users, or every account.
- Event Viewer exports and the application’s diagnostic log entries immediately before the first failure.
- Recent changes such as an application update, profile migration, account move, network change, or policy adjustment.
An administrator may need to correct the client’s connection behavior or an Exchange-side configuration. The available evidence does not establish one universal client-side setting or a safe numeric limit to change, so avoid editing undocumented registry or server parameters on your own.
If Windows also crashes, freezes, or restarts
Use this sequence only when the code is accompanied by a system failure. Microsoft’s stop-error guidance identifies newly added hardware, drivers, software, memory, storage, and updates as possible causes. Work from the least destructive and most reversible checks toward restoration.

1. Remove newly added hardware
Shut down the computer and disconnect nonessential external hardware, such as recently attached USB devices, docks, storage, printers, or adapters. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the hardware required to start Windows. Restart and reproduce the action that previously failed. If the crash stops, reconnect devices one at a time until the trigger is identified. Do not disconnect hardware that is required for encrypted storage or specialized business access without following your organization’s procedure.

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the problem does not occur there, a third-party driver, startup service, or recently installed program becomes more likely than the basic Windows kernel.
- Open Settings, choose System, then Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. On Windows 10, the same recovery controls are available under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- After the restart, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- At the Startup Settings screen, choose 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking if network access is necessary.
Try the same operation that produced the crash. If it fails only in normal startup, review recently installed software and drivers before making further changes. If it fails in Safe Mode as well, continue with hardware, memory, storage, and Windows recovery checks.
3. Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to any hardware changed before the crashes, such as display adapters, network adapters, storage controllers, audio, Bluetooth, or USB.
- Look for a yellow warning icon, an unknown device, or a device that appeared at the time the failures began.
- Right-click the suspected device and open Properties to read its status and driver details.
- Use Update driver when a current manufacturer-provided driver is available. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver when that option is available. If the device itself is the trigger, choose Uninstall device only when you know how the driver will be reinstalled, then restart.
Change one device at a time and test after each change. A warning icon is evidence of a device or driver problem, but its absence does not prove that every driver is healthy.
4. Check free disk space
Open Settings > System > Storage and verify that the Windows system drive has usable free space. Low space can prevent updates, temporary files, logs, and crash data from being written. Remove only files you recognize or use Windows’ built-in storage controls. Keep the exported event data from the earlier steps before deleting logs or temporary files.

5. Install current Windows updates
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available quality, security, and driver updates that Windows offers.
- Restart when prompted, then test the original operation.
If the crash started directly after a particular update, record its name and installation date before considering rollback or System Restore. Managed computers may require an administrator to approve update changes.
6. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
- Press
Windows, type Windows Memory Diagnostic, and open it. - Choose Restart now and check for problems after saving your work.
- Let the test complete and sign back in.
- Open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs > System, and find the MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry.
Use the recorded result when deciding whether memory hardware or a broader service issue needs attention. A memory result does not explain an Exchange connection-pool limit by itself; it addresses the separate question of whether Windows instability is also present.
7. Use System Restore when a recent change is the clear trigger
System Restore can return system files, drivers, installed programs, and settings to an earlier restore point without targeting personal documents. Open Control Panel, search for Recovery, choose Open System Restore, and select a restore point dated before the crashes began. Review the affected programs before confirming. If Windows cannot start normally, reach System Restore through Troubleshoot > Advanced options in the recovery environment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
System Restore is reversible only to the extent that another restore point exists. Record the current state and preserve logs before running it. Do not use it as the first response to an application-only 0x00000A2D message, because it may leave the underlying Exchange or RPC condition unchanged.
Best Value
If the code appears during Windows setup or an upgrade
Verify the actual emitter
Setup screens can display an error from an integrated application, migration component, or network service. Check the setup log or Event Viewer timestamp and identify whether 0x00000A2D was produced by Windows Setup, Windows Update, or an Exchange-connected installer. Microsoft’s definition still applies: if an Exchange/RPC client emitted the code, treat it as a connection-pool condition rather than assuming Windows Update itself is defective.
Prepare a safer retry
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware, including removable storage, printers, cameras, and hubs.
- Sign in with an account that has the permissions required to install updates, or ask the device administrator to perform the upgrade.
- Open the Windows Update settings page and run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Install pending Windows updates, restart, and retry the setup.
- Keep the setup error text and timestamps if the retry fails. Reconnect external hardware only after the installation succeeds or the failing device is identified.
Do not repeatedly retry while changing several variables at once. A clean record of which hardware was connected, which updates were installed, and which component logged the code makes the next diagnosis faster.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling it a blue-screen code automatically: 0x00000A2D is an Exchange/RPC protocol error name, not a standard Windows stop-code name.
- Repairing Windows before identifying the process: system resets and driver changes may not affect an application or server connection pool and can destroy evidence.
- Changing undocumented limits: the available definition does not provide a safe client or server value to edit.
- Ignoring the first event: the final warning may be a consequence; the earliest RPC, application, driver, or hardware event is usually more informative.
- Testing only once: note whether the error is repeatable, limited to one account, or tied to a specific action.
- Assuming an absence of a warning icon proves a driver is fine: Device Manager is one check, not a complete hardware diagnosis.
When to escalate
Contact the application owner or Exchange administrator when the code is confined to an Exchange-connected program, affects several users, follows an account or mailbox change, or continues after Windows is stable. Provide the timestamped logs instead of only the hexadecimal number.
Seek Windows or hardware support when crashes continue in Safe Mode, Windows Memory Diagnostic reports a problem, storage space is repeatedly exhausted, or the machine cannot complete updates or start normally. Tell the technician which reversible steps you already tried and which event appeared first.
