How to Fix Error 0x00000788 on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x00000788 is Microsoft’s RPC_S_GRP_ELT_NOT_ADDED status, not proof of one particular printer fault. In practice, work through the connection, power, Print Spooler, Windows printer troubleshooter, printer registration, and model-specific driver checks in that order. The sequence below starts with reversible steps and ends with queue cleanup or driver rollback only when the symptoms justify them.

What error 0x00000788 means

The hexadecimal code 0x00000788 corresponds to RPC_S_GRP_ELT_NOT_ADDED in Microsoft’s error reference. That name describes an RPC (Remote Procedure Call) group-element condition; it does not identify a unique printer model, connection type, or failed component. A printer may display the code while Windows is trying to discover, register, communicate with, or send a job to it, but the code alone cannot tell you which of those stages failed.

For that reason, there is no reliable “0x00000788 fix” that skips diagnosis. Start with the least invasive check that matches your connection, then move through Windows’ print service and device-registration tools. A restart or reinstallation can solve a temporary state problem; a driver replacement is appropriate only when the installed driver does not match the printer or Windows system.

Before changing anything: identify the symptom and connection

Note exactly when the message appears. Discovery failures usually occur when you select Add device or try to connect to a shared or network printer. Queue failures occur after a document is submitted and may leave it in “Error” or “Offline.” A driver failure may begin immediately after a Windows or printer-driver update. The distinction helps you choose the narrowest fix.

  • IN THE BOX: (1) 6-foot high-speed multi-shielded USB 2.0 A-Male to B-Male cable
  • DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects mice, keyboards, and speed-critical devices, such as external hard drives, printers, and cameras to a computer
  • ULTRA FAST SPEED: Full 2.0 USB capability with 480 Mbps transfer speed
  • DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to minimize interference
Connection First checks What a successful check tells you
USB Printer powered on; both cable ends firmly seated; another USB port; another known-good USB printer cable if available Windows can detect a physical device, so concentrate next on spooler, registration, or driver issues
Wi-Fi Printer and PC connected to the same network; check whether one is on a different SSID, extender, or access point Discovery is possible on the same local network; a mismatch points to network selection rather than a Windows print queue
Bluetooth Bluetooth enabled on both devices; printer within range; pairing still present The wireless link is available before you troubleshoot Windows’ printer entry or driver

Do not assume a replacement cable is a guaranteed cure. It is a sensible test or replacement for a wired setup, while a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth error requires wireless checks instead.

Step 1: verify the printer and its physical or wireless link

USB printers

  1. Turn the printer on and wait until its own display or status lights show that it has finished starting.
  2. Unplug the USB cable from the printer and the PC, then reconnect both ends firmly. Inspect the connectors for looseness or visible damage.
  3. Move the cable to a different USB port on the PC. Avoid diagnosing through a hub until a direct port has been tested.
  4. If Windows still does not react, test with a known-good USB printer cable of the correct connector type. A cable swap distinguishes a physical link problem from a Windows configuration problem.

Wi-Fi printers

  1. Read the network name on the printer’s control panel or network-status page.
  2. Check the PC’s current Wi-Fi network and make sure both devices are on the same network, not merely connected to the same internet service.
  3. Pay attention to separate SSIDs created by guest networks, extenders, mesh access points, or multiple bands. Devices on isolated guest networks may be unable to discover one another even when both have internet access.
  4. Move the printer temporarily closer to the access point if its own signal indicator is weak, then retry discovery.

Bluetooth printers

  1. Enable Bluetooth on the PC and the printer.
  2. Keep the devices within normal Bluetooth range and confirm that the printer remains paired.
  3. If pairing has disappeared, remove the stale printer entry from Windows and pair it again before adding it as a printer.

Step 2: power-cycle the printer

A power cycle clears a printer’s temporary network, USB, or internal-job state without changing Windows settings.

  1. Turn the printer off using its normal power control.
  2. Unplug it from the electrical outlet.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power, turn the printer on, and wait for its ready state.
  5. Retry the operation that produced 0x00000788.

If another computer can print to the same device while this PC cannot, leave the printer powered on and continue with Windows-side checks. If no computer can connect, investigate the printer’s own network or hardware status before changing drivers.

Step 3: restart the Windows Print Spooler

The Print Spooler service manages print jobs and the communication between Windows and installed printers. Microsoft notes that restarting it can resolve temporary printer-recognition problems. Restarting the service does not reinstall a driver or remove a printer.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. In the Services list, locate Print Spooler.
  4. Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Start when the service is stopped.
  5. Close Services and test the printer again.

If the service stops immediately after starting, or if Services reports an error, do not repeatedly submit print jobs. Continue to the troubleshooter and printer reinstallation steps; a damaged queue or incompatible driver may be preventing normal startup.

Step 4: run Windows’ printer troubleshooter

Windows 11 and Windows 10 include an automated printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It performs diagnostics and attempts common repairs, so it is useful after the connection and spooler checks but before manual removal.

  1. Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
  2. Search for printer problems or choose the printer troubleshooting flow.
  3. Follow the prompts and select the affected printer when Windows asks.
  4. Allow the diagnostics to complete, apply any offered repair, and retry a test page or the original print action.

The troubleshooter may report that it could not identify a problem. That result does not prove that the printer is healthy; it means only that its automated checks found no applicable repair. Proceed to device removal and driver verification if the error remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: remove and add the printer again

Reinstalling the printer entry rebuilds Windows’ registration and connection metadata. It is more disruptive than restarting a service, so first save or note any custom settings you need, such as paper size, duplex selection, or a non-default port.

  • DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to protect against noise, minimizing interference for a clear signal

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the affected printer.
  3. Choose Remove and confirm.
  4. Return to the printer list and select Add device.
  5. Wait for discovery, select the printer, and complete the installation.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the affected printer and choose Remove device, then confirm.
  3. Select Add a printer or scanner.
  4. Choose the discovered printer and finish setup.

When automatic discovery fails

Confirm the connection again rather than adding random entries. A USB printer should be connected directly during setup. A Wi-Fi printer must be reachable from the same local network, and a Bluetooth printer must remain paired. If Windows offers a manual local or network installation option, use the printer maker’s documented port, address, or model selection. Avoid choosing a visually similar model: a nearly identical name can represent a different driver.

After re-adding the printer, print a Windows test page or a one-line document. A successful test confirms that registration and basic driver communication work; application-specific failures should then be investigated in that application rather than treated as 0x00000788.

Step 6: verify, update, replace, or roll back the driver

Windows needs a driver that matches the printer model and the installed Windows edition and system type. A driver intended for a different model, Windows release, or 32-bit/64-bit architecture can leave the printer visible but unable to complete a job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the Windows system type

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Record the Windows edition and version.
  3. Record whether the system type is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Try Windows’ driver update first

Use Windows Update or the printer’s driver-update option where available. Restart Windows after an installation, even if no restart prompt appears, then test the printer. A restart ensures that the print service loads the newly installed driver rather than retaining an older module.

Install the exact model driver from the manufacturer

If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, go to the printer manufacturer’s support portal and select the exact model, Windows version, and system type you recorded. Download the current driver package supplied for that combination, install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and restart Windows. Do not use a driver for a related model simply because its name is close.

Roll back a driver update when the timing fits

If 0x00000788 began immediately after a driver update, a rollback may be safer than installing an unrelated package.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Printers or Print queues, depending on how your Windows installation lists the device.
  3. Right-click the affected printer and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
  5. Confirm the reason, restart Windows, and test.

The rollback button may be unavailable when Windows has no previous driver retained. In that case, use the exact manufacturer package instead of forcing a rollback through unsupported files.

Step 7: clear a stuck print queue only when the symptoms match

Queue cleanup is for jobs that remain stuck, repeatedly reappear, or prevent the spooler from processing. It is not a universal remedy for 0x00000788 and should not be the first action when Windows cannot discover the printer.

  1. Open services.msc and locate Print Spooler.
  2. Right-click it and choose Stop.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter %WINDIR%system32spoolprinters in the address bar.
  4. Delete the files inside that folder. Delete the queue files, not the folder itself.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
  6. Restart Windows if jobs remain visible, then submit one small test document.

Clearing the folder removes pending jobs, so save the original documents before doing this. If the folder refills immediately, stop submitting jobs and revisit the driver and printer registration steps.

Choose the least invasive fix that fits the failure

Situation Best next action Reversibility and scope
Printer is off, disconnected, or on another network Reconnect USB, align Wi-Fi networks, or restore Bluetooth pairing Fully reversible; addresses the physical or wireless link
Printer was previously working and suddenly vanished Power-cycle the printer, then restart Print Spooler Reversible; clears temporary device and service state
Windows reports a diagnostic issue Run the Get Help printer troubleshooter Automated and generally low risk; scope depends on its findings
Printer entry is stale or corrupted Remove it and add it again Reversible by reinstalling; custom preferences may need to be recreated
Error follows a driver update Use Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver option when available Changes the driver; limited to systems retaining a previous version
Jobs are visibly stuck in the queue Stop Spooler, clear the queue folder, and start Spooler Deletes pending jobs; does not repair a mismatched driver

Windows 10 support status and what it changes

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that operating system. The printer steps above still apply to an existing Windows 10 installation, but the lack of ongoing support can affect the availability of future driver compatibility fixes and security maintenance.

For Windows 11, keep the system current through Windows Update before installing a model-specific driver. For Windows 10, record the exact version when contacting the printer manufacturer, because support instructions may differ between releases even though the Settings paths above remain familiar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do if the error remains

  • Test the printer from another computer on the same network, if possible. This separates a printer-side or network-side issue from a single Windows installation.
  • For USB, test another port and cable again after reinstalling; intermittent connections can look like driver failures.
  • For Wi-Fi, verify that the PC and printer have not moved to isolated guest, extender, or access-point networks.
  • Check whether the printer’s own status page reports an offline, paused, or authentication condition.
  • Confirm that the installed driver’s model, Windows version, and 32-bit/64-bit type exactly match the system.
  • After each major change, submit one test page instead of a large batch. This identifies the step that changed the behavior and avoids rebuilding a new stuck queue.

If the printer fails from every computer, the remaining fault is unlikely to be limited to this Windows installation. If it works elsewhere but not here after the connection, spooler, reinstallation, and exact-driver checks, document the Windows version, printer model, connection type, and the step at which the code appears before contacting the printer manufacturer or Microsoft support.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows problems, clean temporary and cache files, review selected settings and vulnerabilities, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.

Bottom line

Treat 0x00000788 as a symptom, not a diagnosis. Confirm the connection, power-cycle the printer, restart Print Spooler, run Get Help, remove and re-add the printer, and then install or roll back the exact matching driver. Clear the spool folder only for a genuinely stuck queue. This order gives USB, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth users a practical path from the safest checks to the more consequential changes.
