Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteError 0x00000777 means OR_INVALID_OID: “The object specified was not found.” Windows or an application tried to resolve an object reference—such as a service, device, driver, or application resource—and could not find it. The code does not identify one universal faulty component, so the correct fix depends on where it appeared and what changed immediately beforehand. Record that context first, then work through the reversible checks below.
What error 0x00000777 means
Microsoft’s current Win32 error reference identifies 0x00000777 as OR_INVALID_OID. Its defined text is The object specified was not found.
In practical terms, a Windows component or program requested an object identifier and the object could not be resolved. The missing object might belong to a printer, an RPC-related operation, a driver, a setup process, a service, or a particular application. The number alone cannot tell you which one.

That is why two computers can display the same code for entirely different reasons. One may show it while adding a printer; another may show it during an installer; a third may record it in an application or system event without any visible dialog. The action that produced the message, the surrounding text, and the logs are more useful than the hexadecimal value by itself.
| Code or wording | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
0x00000777 / OR_INVALID_OID |
Win32 object/RPC resolution status: the requested object was not found. | Investigate the operation that requested the object and the component named in its logs. |
| “The object specified was not found.” | The human-readable text for OR_INVALID_OID. |
Capture the complete message, including the program, file, device, or action shown with it. |
Bug Check 0x77 / KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR |
A separate stop error involving a kernel stack page that could not be read. | Treat it as a crash and storage or memory investigation, not as the same Win32 status. |
Do not drop or add zeros when searching logs. 0x00000777 and Bug Check 0x77 are different notations for different conditions. Microsoft describes Bug Check 0x77 as potentially involving storage, RAM, cabling, or malware; those causes do not automatically apply to OR_INVALID_OID.

First identify where the message appears
Before changing drivers, services, or the registry, write down the trigger. A component-specific repair is justified only when the code consistently appears during that component’s operation or a log names it.
- Printing: Did the message appear while adding, enumerating, or using a printer, or while installing its software?
- Setup or upgrade: Did it occur during Windows Setup, a feature update, or a third-party installer?
- Application: Does one program show the code while other programs work?
- Login or startup: Does it appear before the desktop, after sign-in, or when a service starts?
- Device activity: Did it begin after connecting hardware, installing a driver, or changing a dock, scanner, USB device, or adapter?
- Unexpected restart: Is the code part of a blue-screen or repeated-restart event rather than a normal dialog?
Also note whether a restart temporarily clears the behavior, whether Safe Mode changes it, and whether the same named device or driver appears every time. These observations let you choose a narrow fix instead of applying unrelated changes.
Prepare evidence before making changes
Capture the complete message
Take a screenshot or copy the full text. Include the application or installer name, a file name, a device name, any additional status code, and the time. A bare hexadecimal number is often insufficient to distinguish a missing printer object from a failed application reference.

Preserve a way back
Before registry edits, driver removal, or recovery operations, back up important files. Prefer reversible actions first: restarting, disconnecting a recently added device, disabling a suspect device temporarily, or rolling back a recent change. If a step changes startup behavior, record the original setting so you can restore it.
Manual fixes, in the safest order
1. Restart Windows once
Choose Start > Power > Restart, rather than simply closing the dialog. A restart can clear a stale service or RPC reference and reload device registrations. After Windows returns, repeat the exact action that produced the code. If the message does not return, note what you were doing and continue monitoring; a one-time occurrence does not establish a permanent hardware or driver fault.
If the issue began immediately after adding hardware, installing software, or applying a driver, temporarily disconnect or uninstall that recent change and test again. Keep the original installer or driver package available in case you need to restore the device.

2. Use Safe Mode when normal startup is unstable
If the computer repeatedly restarts, crashes before you can work, or displays the error during startup, use Safe Mode to separate essential Windows components from third-party startup software and drivers. From the sign-in screen or Start menu, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Select Enable Safe Mode (or Enable Safe Mode with Networking only when network access is necessary).

In Safe Mode, check whether the same action still produces the code. If it does not, a nonessential driver, startup program, or service becomes more likely; review recent changes and Device Manager entries rather than deleting system components at random. If the error persists in Safe Mode, the underlying reference may be present in a core Windows component, a device registration, or the operation itself. Exit Safe Mode by restarting normally after testing.
3. Inspect Device Manager
Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the categories related to the trigger—such as Printers, Print queues, Display adapters, Network adapters, Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or the category named in your event log. A yellow warning icon, an unknown device, or a device that disappears when the error occurs is useful evidence.
For the implicated device, open Properties and read the Device status text on the General tab. Depending on what you found, use Update driver, Disable device for a temporary isolation test, or Uninstall device when you have a known-good vendor driver and a safe recovery plan. Do not disable unrelated hardware merely because it is listed. Restart after a driver change and repeat the original operation.

4. Install pending Windows and vendor driver updates
Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10. Select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when asked. If the event names a device, obtain the current driver from that device’s manufacturer or from the hardware vendor’s supported update channel, then install it according to the vendor’s instructions.

For an update-related occurrence, run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and use the Windows Update troubleshooter; on Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Restart after the troubleshooter completes, return to Windows Update, and check again. A troubleshooter result is a diagnostic clue, not proof that every update problem has been repaired.
5. Remove nonessential external hardware during setup or upgrade
If the code appears while installing or upgrading Windows, shut down and disconnect devices that are not required to complete setup: printers, scanners, USB storage, docks, and similar peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the installation media or network connection required by the process. Retry the setup, then reconnect one device at a time after Windows is running. This identifies whether setup was trying to resolve an unavailable external object.
Review security software and other general installation conditions as well. Temporarily changing a security product’s settings should follow its documentation and your organization’s policy; restore protection immediately after the test. Do not interpret a setup failure as evidence that a particular peripheral is defective until the logs identify it.

6. Apply a trigger-specific repair only when evidence supports it
The code definition is component-agnostic. Use the following branches only when the trigger and logs point in that direction:
Best Value
- Printer operation: Confirm that the printer is connected and recognized, inspect the printer-related entries in Device Manager and Event Viewer, and install the current driver supplied for your Windows edition. If the message appears only while adding or enumerating that printer, remove the recently changed printer software or connection, restart, and add it again using the vendor’s documented procedure.
- A single application: Check the application’s own logs and Windows Application events for the missing file, service, or object name. Update or repair that application using its installer, or contact its publisher with the complete event details. Avoid deleting shared DLLs or registry entries based only on the hexadecimal code.
- Login or startup: Compare normal startup with Safe Mode. If Safe Mode works, review recently installed startup software and drivers one change at a time. If the same service is named on every boot, record its event details before disabling or reinstalling it.
- A newly attached device: Disconnect it, restart, and test the original workflow. If the error disappears, update or reinstall that device’s driver and check its cable, dock, or connection according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
7. Use System Restore or another recovery option last
If the error continues after evidence-based driver and update work, choose the recovery option that matches the timeline. System Restore can return system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point without intentionally removing personal documents, but applications or drivers installed after that point may be affected. Select a restore point dated before the first occurrence and review the affected-program list before confirming.
When Windows cannot start reliably, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options from Windows Recovery Environment and select the recovery feature appropriate to your situation. Back up important files first whenever possible. A reset or reinstallation is a major change and should follow a verified backup and a record of required applications, activation information, and device drivers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between competing fixes
Do not rank fixes by the code number alone. Rank them by the evidence you collected and by how easily you can undo them.
| Observation | Most useful next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The error appeared once and vanished after restart. | Monitor and keep the event details. | A stale reference may have been cleared; unnecessary driver or registry changes add risk. |
| The problem began after hardware or software was added. | Disconnect or uninstall that change, then retest. | The timing provides a specific, reversible suspect. |
| Device Manager shows a warning on the named hardware. | Update, disable for isolation, or uninstall and reinstall that device’s driver. | The log and device state point to the same object. |
| Windows Update or setup produced the code. | Run the version-appropriate troubleshooter, install pending updates, and retry with nonessential hardware removed. | The failure is tied to an update or installation transaction. |
| Safe Mode changes the behavior. | Review third-party startup software and drivers. | Safe Mode loads a smaller set of components, narrowing the search. |
| The code appears in one application only. | Use that application’s logs and repair or update its installation. | A single program may be holding the invalid object reference. |
| The code remains after all targeted checks or Windows will not start. | Use System Restore or the matching recovery option after a backup. | Recovery changes more state and should follow evidence gathering. |
Keep a short troubleshooting log: date and time, exact trigger, change made, restart result, and the event source or driver version. If a change helps, you can identify it; if it hurts, you can reverse it. If nothing changes, the record prevents repeating the same step.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating 0x00000777 as a printer-only error: Printing is one possible context, not part of Microsoft’s definition.
- Confusing it with Bug Check 0x77: The extra zeros and the different label identify different Windows conditions.
- Changing several drivers at once: You lose the ability to identify which change affected the result.
- Deleting registry keys or shared files without a named reference: The code does not tell you which key or file is safe to remove.
- Skipping logs: Event source, event ID, timestamp, and the named object often provide the only component-specific clue.
- Using recovery before backing up: Restore, reset, and reinstallation can affect applications, drivers, or settings even when personal files are intended to remain.
- Assuming a successful reboot proves the cause: A restart can clear a stale reference without repairing the condition that created it.
When to seek further help
Escalate to the device or application publisher, Microsoft support channels, or a qualified technician when the same named component fails after its supported driver or application repair; Windows cannot start normally; the issue includes repeated stop errors; or recovery would risk business-critical data. Provide the exact code, complete wording, trigger, Windows edition and version, recent changes, Safe Mode result, Device Manager status, and relevant Event Viewer entries. This information is more actionable than reporting only “Windows says object not found.”
No authoritative prevalence or success-rate statistic has been established for 0x00000777, so no single fix can honestly be described as working “most of the time.” The reliable approach is to connect the message to its trigger, test reversible changes, and use recovery only after the evidence points to a system-level problem.
