Error 0x00000767 has no verified Microsoft Windows meaning. Microsoft documentation does not define 0x00000767 as a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system error. The same hexadecimal value is identified in Unicode references as U+0767, “Arabic Letter Noon With Two Dots Below,” which strongly suggests that the number was mistyped, copied from an application, or belongs to a particular device or program. If the message appeared while connecting to a shared printer, use the printer-sharing procedure below; otherwise, record the exact dialog and the application that produced it before trying a repair.
What 0x00000767 means on Windows
There is no authoritative Microsoft definition for 0x00000767 as a Windows 11 or Windows 10 error code. That matters because a hexadecimal-looking number does not automatically identify a Windows component. Programs, device utilities, installers, printer software and log files can display their own numeric values, and a single mistyped character can point to a completely different problem.

The literal value is also a Unicode code point
Unicode references list the value as U+0767, Arabic Letter Noon With Two Dots Below. Unicode’s use of the number does not explain a Windows failure; it only confirms that the same numeric value exists in another technical system. Do not treat the Unicode description as a diagnosis for your PC.

Why the source of the message is essential
Before changing settings, identify all of the surrounding context:

- Copy the complete message, including punctuation and any text before or after the number.
- Note whether it appeared in a Windows dialog, the Get Help app, a printer window, an installer, an application log or a browser page.
- Record what you were doing immediately before it appeared: adding a printer, printing, installing software, opening a file or connecting to a network device.
- Capture the name and model of the device or application involved.
- Check whether the number is really
0x00000767, rather than a similar value such as0x00000767with a digit omitted, transposed or replaced.
Those details determine whether a Microsoft printer procedure applies or whether the publisher of the application must explain its own code. A hexadecimal prefix alone is not enough to select a safe registry edit, security change or driver package.
If the message appeared while connecting to a shared printer
Shared-printer failures can be caused by the host’s share settings, network reachability, credentials, discovery settings, firewall or driver differences. Work through these checks in order. They apply when one PC shares a printer and another PC is trying to add or use it.
1. Confirm that the host PC is sharing the printer
- On the computer physically connected to the printer, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer and open Printer properties. This is the printer’s property dialog, not the general Settings page.
- Open the Sharing tab and enable Share this printer.
- Write down the exact share name. The name is case-insensitive in normal Windows use, but spaces and punctuation still need to be entered correctly when you connect from another PC.
If the Sharing tab is unavailable or the setting cannot be saved, you are not yet dealing with a client-side connection problem. Check that you are configuring the host computer and that your account has permission to change printer properties.
2. Verify that both computers can reach each other
Place the host and client on the same local network. A guest Wi-Fi network, a VPN connection or another network topology that isolates devices can prevent a shared printer from being discovered even when both computers have internet access.

- On the client PC, open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar and enter
\ComputerName, replacingComputerNamewith the host PC’s name. - Press Enter. A reachable host should display its shared resources or at least prompt for credentials.
If File Explorer cannot reach the host, adding the printer by name will normally fail too. Resolve the network path first instead of repeatedly reinstalling the printer.
3. Supply credentials for the host computer
When Windows asks for a username and password, use the credentials of an account that exists on the host PC. Depending on how the host is configured, that can be its local Windows account or its Microsoft account. Enter the account name in the format Windows requests and avoid guessing a different account merely because it is the account currently signed in on the client.
If the credentials are rejected, verify the password on the host and make sure you are not using an expired or disabled account. A successful sign-in to the client PC does not prove that the same credentials are valid on the host.

4. Turn on network discovery and file-and-printer sharing
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings.
- Under the profile that applies to the current network, turn on Network discovery.
- Turn on File and printer sharing.
Apply the setting on the computers that need to participate in the share. If the network profile changes later, Windows can apply a different set of sharing rules, so check the active profile when a connection works on one network but not another.

5. Check the adapter’s sharing component and firewall behavior
Microsoft Learn identifies File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks as the relevant component on the network adapter. Open the properties for the adapter that carries the connection and confirm that this component is enabled. Check the host and client when the connection is inconsistent.
Windows Firewall automatically opens the appropriate file-and-printer-sharing ports when you enable sharing content or network discovery. Do not start by disabling the firewall. Instead, confirm that the correct sharing options are enabled for the active network profile. Disabling security features can hide the real configuration problem and exposes the computer unnecessarily.
6. Add the printer by its UNC path
- On the client PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and wait for Windows to search.
- Choose Add manually when the shared printer does not appear.
- Select Select a shared printer by name.
- Enter the path in this form:
\ComputerNamePrinterShareName. - Replace both placeholders with the host computer name and the exact share name recorded in step 1, then continue through the installation prompts.
The UNC path bypasses an incomplete discovery list; it does not bypass authentication or network access. If Windows reports that the path cannot be found, return to the File Explorer test in step 2.
7. Remove the failed connection and reconnect cleanly
- In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the failed shared printer and remove it.
- Restart the client PC. If the host has also had repeated share failures, restart it after saving any work.
- Repeat the manual UNC-path installation in step 6 rather than relying only on automatic discovery.
A clean reconnect removes a stale printer entry and forces Windows to negotiate the share again. It does not correct a wrong share name, unavailable host or invalid account, so those checks still have to pass.

General printer checks when the share is not the only problem
Run Microsoft’s automated printer troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends the automated printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for printer connection or printing problems, and follow the diagnostic prompts. Record what the troubleshooter reports before changing additional settings; its result can distinguish a recognition problem from a queue or connection problem.
Power-cycle the printer and verify its network
- Turn the printer off.
- Unplug it for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power and turn the printer on.
- Verify that the printer and the PC use the same network when the printer is connected over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Power-cycling clears a temporary device state. It does not repair a damaged driver or change a Windows share, so continue with the appropriate branch if the printer remains unavailable.
Remove and reinstall the printer
When Windows recognizes an old entry but cannot print, remove that printer from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, restart the PC, and add the printer again. For a shared printer, use the UNC path after the host, network and credentials checks have succeeded. For a local printer, follow the connection method shown by Windows for the device.
Investigate the print queue
If the printer is installed but jobs remain pending, open the printer’s queue and inspect the job state. A single paused or failed job can make later jobs appear to be a connection failure. Cancel the blocked job, confirm that the printer is not set to offline or paused, and submit one small test page before sending a larger document.
Check the Print Spooler when jobs will not move
The Print Spooler manages queued print jobs. If the printer is visible but every job immediately fails or remains stuck, treat the symptom as a spooler or queue problem rather than assuming that 0x00000767 identifies the cause. Restarting the Print Spooler service through Windows’ Services management console is a standard diagnostic step; save work first, because restarting it interrupts active printing. If the problem returns, remove the printer and reinstall its driver instead of repeatedly restarting the service.
Compare driver architecture and version
Microsoft lists driver mismatches among the causes of shared-printer connection failures. Compare the driver currently installed on the client with the driver expected by the host and the printer. Check that the package matches the Windows edition and system architecture in use. If Windows presents a current and recommended driver version, record both before changing anything so you can identify whether the installation actually changed.
Do not install an arbitrary package because its file name resembles the printer model. Use the driver supplied for that printer and Windows configuration, and retain a way to restore the previous driver if the new one behaves worse.
Handle printer-recognition failures separately
If the printer never appears in Windows, first establish whether the device is powered, connected and visible on the expected network or cable. A recognition failure is different from a shared-printer authentication failure: the former occurs before Windows can use a queue, while the latter occurs after the host share is reached. Keep those cases separate when reading the message or contacting support.

What not to do
- Do not assume that 0x00000767 proves a Windows system-file failure or malware infection.
- Do not edit the registry merely because a web page associates the number with a printer.
- Do not disable Windows Firewall or other security controls as a first-line fix.
- Do not install a driver for a different model or architecture to make an error message disappear.
- Do not keep retrying automatic discovery when the host is unreachable; test the UNC path and network first.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC can still run the printer procedures above, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 for ongoing updates. The end of support does not give 0x00000767 a new meaning and does not by itself explain a shared-printer failure.
When you need more information before attempting another fix
Stop and obtain the complete screenshot or surrounding message when the number appears outside a printer workflow, when the application name is unknown, or when the same code is shown by different programs. Include the Windows version, the affected device, whether the computer is on a same-LAN, VPN or guest network, the account type used for the host, and the driver versions involved. Those facts allow the correct procedure to be selected without guessing at unsupported registry changes or security workarounds.
