How to Fix Error 0x000006BC on Windows 11 and Windows 10

Error 0x000006BC means RPC_S_INVALID_NETWORK_OPTIONS—Windows reports that “The network options are invalid.” It is an RPC communication error, not proof that a printer has failed. When it appears while adding or using a shared printer, work from the client and host computers outward: verify the network path, run Windows diagnostics, confirm sharing, check RPC transport and firewall rules, then repair the queue and driver.

The sequence below applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. It is especially relevant when printing broke after an upgrade or security-policy change. Windows 11 version 22H2 introduced print-component changes that can alter how computers communicate during printing, so an older host, client, firewall, or policy can become incompatible even when the printer itself still works.

What error 0x000006BC means

Microsoft’s Win32 error reference (updated November 19, 2024) defines hexadecimal 0x000006BC as RPC_S_INVALID_NETWORK_OPTIONS. In plain language, the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) layer rejected the network options used to reach a service. Windows uses RPC while a client computer contacts a shared printer, print server, or other network service.

The code does not identify one defective component. A blocked port, an unreachable host, disabled sharing, a transport mismatch, a stale queue, or an incompatible driver can all produce a similar failure. The correct fix therefore depends on where the error occurs.

First identify the scenario

Where the error appears What it usually points to First checks
Adding a printer shared from another Windows PC Client-to-host network path, sharing, firewall, RPC transport, or driver compatibility Test \ComputerName, verify the host share, and check RPC/firewall rules
Printing to a share that used to work A changed host policy, Windows update, stopped spooler, stuck queue, or damaged driver Run Get Help, restart both computers, inspect the queue and sharing settings
A USB or locally attached printer Usually not a remote RPC path; the code may come from a print-spooler or driver operation Run the troubleshooter, restart the spooler, clear jobs, and reinstall the printer
Another RPC-based application That application’s service endpoint, network policy, or firewall configuration Use the application’s documentation after confirming general connectivity

If the problem is not related to printing, do not force printer-specific changes. Keep the same diagnostic logic—identify the client and server, test reachability, and check the service’s transport and firewall requirements—but use the affected application’s instructions.

Before changing anything: preserve a useful baseline

  1. Write down whether the failure occurs while adding the printer, when submitting a job, or only when the job is processed.
  2. Record the Windows edition and version on both computers. Note whether either machine was upgraded recently, especially to Windows 11 version 22H2 or later.
  3. Record the printer model, the computer that physically hosts or shares it, and the exact share name shown in the printer’s properties.
  4. Capture the complete message and any accompanying code. Retest the same operation after every change so you know which change affected the RPC path.

Do not begin by disabling the firewall, opening every port, or editing the registry. Those actions can remove useful protection without proving what caused the failure.

Run Microsoft’s built-in printer diagnostics

On Windows 11 or Windows 10, open the Get Help app from Start and run the printer troubleshooter. Microsoft says Get Help automatically runs diagnostics and attempts common fixes. Follow its prompts for the affected printer, allow it to complete, and then repeat the operation that produced 0x000006BC.

The troubleshooter may repair a queue or service, but it cannot correct a firewall or network policy that blocks the host. If the error remains, continue with the manual checks below rather than repeatedly rerunning the same diagnostic.

Verify power, network reachability, and the host computer

Restart the physical and Windows components

  1. Turn the printer off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. Wait until it reports that it is ready.
  2. Restart the computer that shares the printer and the client computer that is trying to print.
  3. If a separate router or switch connects the computers, confirm that it is operating normally and that neither computer has moved to a guest or isolated wireless network.

A power cycle does not repair a blocked RPC port, but it removes temporary printer, spooler, and network-session states before deeper testing.

Test the host path in File Explorer

On the client, open File Explorer and enter \ComputerName in the address bar, replacing ComputerName with the name of the computer that shares the printer. Microsoft recommends this test for shared-printer failures. If the host opens, the client can at least resolve and reach a Windows share on that computer. If it does not, fix name resolution, network placement, credentials, or the host’s firewall before changing printer drivers.

Both computers should be connected to the same local network. A printer that is reachable from one computer does not prove that the second computer can reach the sharing host; guest Wi-Fi, VPN routing, and network isolation can produce different results for each device.

Confirm that the printer is actually shared

Windows 11 host

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the printer, open its printer properties, and select the Sharing tab.
  3. Enable Share this printer and confirm the share name. Use a short, unambiguous name when adding the printer from the client.
  4. Apply the setting and note the exact host computer name and share name.

Windows 10 host

Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click the printer, choose Printer properties, and open Sharing. Enable sharing and confirm the share name. The labels differ from Windows 11, but the requirement is the same: the host must publish the queue and the client must use that published share.

Refresh a stale share

If sharing is enabled but the client still receives the error, temporarily clear the sharing setting, apply it, then enable it again and apply the setting once more. This recreates the share configuration without changing the printer hardware. Remove the old printer connection from the client and add it again using the current host and share names. Do this only after confirming that the host itself can print.

Check RPC transport and firewall policy

Windows 11 version 22H2 introduced changes to print components that modify how Windows machines communicate during printing or print-related operations. In environments where a firewall or policy previously allowed only a different transport, the client can now fail with invalid network options.

RPC over TCP: the normal path

Microsoft’s current print RPC guidance identifies TCP as the normal transport. The RPC Endpoint Mapper uses TCP port 135. After the endpoint is located, RPC can use dynamic, or ephemeral, ports; Microsoft documents the default range as 49152–65535. A firewall or network security product must permit the required traffic between the client and the host or print server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the firewall on the host, the client, and any managed network device between them. The rule must allow the intended RPC traffic on the local network; opening these ports to the public internet is not an appropriate workaround. If your organization restricts outbound or inbound ports, ask the administrator to compare the policy with Microsoft’s print RPC requirements rather than creating a broad “allow everything” rule.

Look for changes after an update or hardening policy

If printing stopped immediately after a Windows update, compare the host and client versions and review recently changed firewall or endpoint-security policies. A mixed environment—such as a newer Windows 11 client contacting an older Windows host—can expose a transport or authentication assumption that was not visible before the update. Restore compatibility through a documented policy change or supported update path, not by permanently weakening security controls.

Named pipes: an exception, not a first fix

Microsoft also documents RPC over named pipes for environments where TCP cannot be used. Named-pipe operation can require additional policy settings on the computers involved. Treat it as an administrator-level, environment-specific choice: establish why TCP is unavailable, apply the documented policy consistently to the host and client, and test from a controlled local network. Do not switch transports randomly or combine partial settings from different machines.

Repair the spooler, queue, and driver

Clear jobs that are preventing a clean connection

  1. On the affected computer, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
  2. Select the printer and open its print queue.
  3. Cancel every stuck job. If a job will not cancel, restart the Print Spooler service from the Windows Services app, then reopen the queue and cancel it.
  4. Submit a small test page only after the queue is empty.

A stopped or wedged spooler can make a network error look like a transport failure. Restarting it is a reversible diagnostic step; it does not change firewall policy or printer sharing.

Update or replace the printer driver

Driver compatibility is a common cause of shared-printer failures, particularly when the host and client have different Windows versions or when a Windows update changes print security behavior. Obtain the driver from the printer manufacturer or a Windows-supported source for the exact model and Windows edition. Install it on the computer that hosts the queue and, when prompted, on the client.

Do not assume that a generic driver is interchangeable with a model-specific package. Check that the selected driver matches the printer model and that the installation completes without errors. If the existing driver is corrupted, removing the old printer and its driver package before installing the supported package can be necessary; record the current share name first so you can recreate it.

Remove and re-add the client connection

  1. Remove the failing printer from the client’s Printers & scanners page.
  2. Restart the client if Windows says files or services are in use.
  3. Confirm that the host is online, the printer is shared, and \ComputerName opens in File Explorer.
  4. Add the printer again using the host’s current shared-printer path and complete the driver prompt.
  5. Print a test page, then test the original document or application.

Removing and re-adding the client connection addresses stale queue metadata. It will not solve a blocked port, so perform the network and firewall checks first when the host itself cannot be reached.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

Observed result Likely boundary Next action
The host name cannot be opened in File Explorer Network placement, name resolution, credentials, or host firewall Restore local-network reachability before changing the printer
The host opens, but the shared printer is absent Sharing is disabled, the share name changed, or the host queue is not published Recheck the host’s Sharing tab and recreate the share
The share is visible, but adding it returns 0x000006BC RPC transport, port policy, or a Windows-version compatibility change Compare TCP 135 and dynamic-port rules; involve an administrator for policy changes
The printer adds successfully, but jobs stay queued Spooler state, stuck jobs, or driver mismatch Clear the queue, restart Print Spooler, and update or reinstall the driver
The host prints locally but no client can print Host sharing, host firewall, or RPC configuration Focus on the host and its inbound policy rather than replacing the printer
Only one client fails while others print That client’s queue, driver, credentials, or local firewall Remove and re-add the client connection and repair its driver or queue

When the error is not a printer problem

RPC is used by many Windows services. If 0x000006BC appears in another application, note which computer provides the service, which computer is the client, and whether the failure is local or remote. Test the host path, inspect the application’s required ports and transport, and consult that product’s documentation. Printer-sharing changes—such as enabling a printer share or installing a printer driver—will not repair an unrelated RPC service.

Safe recovery and escalation checklist

  • Keep the firewall enabled while testing; create only narrowly scoped, documented rules on the trusted local network.
  • Do not expose RPC ports 135 or 49152–65535 directly to the internet.
  • Do not select named pipes unless TCP is genuinely unavailable and an administrator can apply the required policy on both sides.
  • Do not use a registry cleaner or an unverified driver package as a substitute for checking the host, transport, and queue.
  • If a managed computer is involved, give the administrator the Windows versions, host name, printer share name, timestamp, and exact error text.
  • After each change, repeat the same operation and record whether the result changed. This prevents several simultaneous changes from hiding the actual cause.
