Error 0x00000575 means Windows could not complete mutual authentication. It is an authentication status, not a universal Windows Update or blue-screen error, so the correct fix depends on the operation that failed—such as a work account, domain connection, VPN, certificate-backed service, network share, or individual application. Identify that context first, then work through the reversible checks below.

What error 0x00000575 means

Microsoft lists 0x00000575 as ERROR_MUTUAL_AUTH_FAILED. Mutual authentication is an exchange in which both sides verify each other before a connection or operation is trusted. The code does not identify which Windows component, account, certificate, or policy failed. The screen, application, command, or event that displayed it is therefore as important as the number itself.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For example, a failed sign-in to a company resource can involve domain trust or time synchronization, while a VPN or certificate-backed service can fail because a certificate is invalid or a security policy rejects the exchange. A single registry edit or downloaded “fix” cannot safely address all of those situations.

The same hexadecimal status can appear in very different circumstances. A personal computer connecting to one secure service needs a different investigation from a domain-joined laptop that cannot access several company shares. Treat the number as a clue about the type of failure, not as a diagnosis of the defective component.

First, capture the failing context

Before changing settings, record enough information to reproduce the problem and give an administrator a useful diagnostic trail.

  • Copy the exact code and message. Confirm that it is 0x00000575, not a nearby hexadecimal code.
  • Note the application, Windows dialog, command, network share, VPN client, or service that produced it.
  • Write down the date and time, signed-in account, device name, and whether the device was on a home, work, or public network.
  • Record recent changes: Windows updates, driver installations, password changes, certificate renewals, VPN changes, new peripherals, or endpoint-security policy changes.
  • Try the same operation once more and note whether it fails every time or only on one resource.

Also note whether another user can perform the operation, whether the same account works on another approved device, and whether unrelated Windows functions are normal. These comparisons help separate an account or server problem from a local Windows problem. A failure limited to one application usually calls for that application’s logs and administrator; failures across many resources point toward time, network, trust, policy, or system health.

Do not repeatedly enter a password if the account may be locked, and do not remove a computer from a company domain or weaken security policy without the administrator responsible for that environment.

Quick checks that often expose the cause

Verify date, time, and time zone

Authentication protocols can reject a device whose clock is significantly different from the server’s clock. In Windows, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time (Windows 11) or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time (Windows 10). Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone selection where your organization permits it, then select Sync now. Retry the original operation.

Check the displayed time zone as well as the clock. A laptop that was recently transported, restored from an image, or used with a changed firmware clock can show a plausible local time while still using the wrong zone. On managed computers, the organization may deliberately control time synchronization, so follow its policy instead of replacing the configured time source.

Check the account and credentials

Confirm that you are using the account expected by the resource. A work or school account, local account, and personal Microsoft account are not interchangeable. If the password was recently changed, sign out and back in, reconnect the approved network or VPN, and check whether the account is locked or requires a new sign-in method. Never paste credentials into an untrusted prompt.

Cached credentials can make a recently changed password appear to work for one local action while the server rejects it. Remove only credentials that you recognize and that the organization permits you to manage; do not delete broad credential stores as a first step. If multifactor authentication, a smart card, or a security key is required, verify that the correct account and authenticator are being used rather than repeatedly retrying a different sign-in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the network path

Confirm that the required Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN, or corporate network is connected. A resource that works on the company network but fails at home may require an approved VPN or conditional-access route. Conversely, a VPN can block local discovery or send traffic through a policy that rejects the authentication exchange. Disconnect and reconnect the approved VPN once, then test the same operation without changing firewall or domain policy.

Compare the result on the intended network, not just on a different connection. If the error disappears on the corporate network, record that fact for the network or identity administrator. Do not install an unrelated VPN, proxy, or “network optimizer” to work around a policy-controlled route.

Inspect certificates and security controls

If the failing operation names a certificate, secure website, smart card, remote service, or enterprise application, check the certificate’s validity period, expected identity, and issuing chain in that application’s normal certificate viewer. Confirm that the certificate is not expired or not-yet-valid, that its subject or alternative name matches the service, and that the required private key is available to the account or service. Do not permanently bypass certificate warnings.

Endpoint-security, firewall, or application-control rules can also reject a handshake; review the relevant alert or policy rather than disabling protection broadly. A temporary, administrator-approved test may identify a blocking product, but protection should be restored immediately and the result documented. Certificate renewal, trust-chain installation, and policy changes belong to the certificate or service owner when the device is managed.

Determine which troubleshooting branch fits

Observed scope Most useful next checks Who may need to act
One application or one server only Application logs, its account, certificate, proxy/VPN route, and service-specific settings Application or service administrator
Several company resources or a domain sign-in Clock synchronization, VPN or network path, computer-account trust, and domain events Domain or IT administrator
One certificate-backed connection Certificate dates, subject name, chain, private-key access, and renewal status Certificate or service owner
Failure began after an update, driver, peripheral, or security change Remove the recent variable, update or roll back the relevant component, then test Device owner; administrator for managed devices
Many unrelated Windows operations fail Safe Mode, Device Manager, free-space check, System Restore, and system-file repair Device owner; administrator if policy-controlled

Use the least invasive branch that matches the evidence. Diagnostics, reconnecting an approved network, and checking a certificate are reversible. Removing a security product, changing trust, or altering organization-wide policy has broader consequences and should come later, with authorization.

Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter

Although 0x00000575 is not inherently a Windows Update code, pending updates can matter when the failure began during an upgrade or when system components are inconsistent. Microsoft’s troubleshooter can run diagnostics, attempt fixes, restart the device, and let you check for updates again.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Apply any offered action, restart when requested, and return to Settings > Windows Update to select Check for updates.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Restart if prompted and use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

Keep the exact original operation in mind while testing. A successful update does not prove that a domain, certificate, or application trust problem is resolved. Conversely, if the troubleshooter reports an update problem, fix that issue first and then retest the authentication operation rather than assuming the two statuses have the same cause.

Isolate updates, drivers, peripherals, and security software

If the problem started after an update

Note the update date and whether the error appears only after startup, sign-in, or connection to one resource. Install all compatible pending updates first. If the failure began immediately after a particular update and your organization allows rollback, use the supported Windows recovery option for that update rather than deleting files manually. Managed devices should be handled through the organization’s change process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retest after each change, and keep a short timeline of what was changed and what result followed. This avoids making several simultaneous changes that obscure the cause and makes it easier to return the device to its approved configuration.

If a driver or peripheral changed

Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, smart-card readers, and other newly attached hardware, then restart and test. Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it. Expand categories related to the failing operation, look for a warning icon, and open Properties to review the device status and driver date. Install an approved update or use Roll Back Driver when the problem clearly follows a driver change and the option is available.

Do not remove a device entry simply because it has a warning icon; record its name and status first. A network adapter, smart-card reader, storage controller, or security device can be part of the authentication path, and an incorrect driver replacement may create a second problem.

If third-party security software changed

During upgrade troubleshooting, Microsoft advises removing incompatible third-party security software when the installation context warrants it. Use the product’s supported uninstall process, restart, and test only long enough to identify whether it is the cause. Re-enable or reinstall protection according to the administrator’s policy; do not leave a device unprotected as a permanent workaround.

Use Safe Mode to separate Windows from third-party components

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If the operation works there, a third-party startup service, driver, VPN component, or security product becomes more likely. If it fails in the same way, the cause may be the account, network, certificate, Windows component, or managed policy rather than a normal startup program.

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. Choose 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking only when network access is necessary and permitted.
  5. Test the same operation, then restart normally.

Safe Mode may not load a VPN client, smart-card middleware, or other component required by the original operation. In that case, a failed test is inconclusive; record which component was unavailable. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent fix. Do not make broad policy or certificate changes merely because the error disappears there.

Check Device Manager and available disk space

In Device Manager, warning icons can reveal a failed network adapter, storage controller, smart-card reader, or other device involved in the connection. Review the device status and driver details, and record the hardware name before changing anything. For managed hardware, obtain the approved driver from the device or organization’s support channel.

Verify that the Windows system drive has adequate free space in Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10). Low space can prevent updates, logs, and recovery operations from completing. Remove only files you recognize, and preserve logs needed for diagnosis. After freeing space, restart and repeat the original operation so that you can tell whether storage, rather than authentication policy, was involved.

Repair Windows system files when the failure is broader

Use system-file repair when multiple unrelated Windows functions fail, the problem persists outside one application, or an update left the system in an inconsistent state. Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin) from the Start menu. Run these commands one at a time, waiting for each to finish:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Restart after both commands complete and test the original operation. DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses for servicing; System File Checker then verifies protected system files. If either command reports an error, save the complete output rather than repeatedly rerunning it. A domain, certificate, or application trust failure will not be fixed by system-file repair alone.

These commands require an account with appropriate administrative rights. On an organization-managed device, follow the support process if administrative elevation is restricted. Repairing files is more appropriate for broad Windows instability than for a single server refusing one account.

Use System Restore when a recent change is the clear trigger

If the error began after a driver, application, update, or configuration change and System Restore was enabled, a restore point can return system files and settings to an earlier state without deleting personal documents. Search for Create a restore point, open System Properties, select System Restore, choose a point dated before the change, and review the affected programs before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System Restore is not a substitute for repairing a domain trust, renewing a certificate, or correcting an account policy. If the computer is managed, check with the administrator before restoring it because the change may affect approved software or configuration. Save work first and record the selected restore point so the action is reversible through the organization’s recovery procedure if necessary.

Review logs and escalate managed authentication failures

Open Event Viewer and inspect logs around the recorded timestamp. Look under Windows Logs > System, Windows Logs > Application, and any provider-specific log for the VPN, certificate service, remote connection, or application. Export or copy the relevant event details, including the provider, event ID, account, server name, and error text. Avoid posting private credentials, certificate private keys, or sensitive domain names publicly.

Correlate the local timestamp with the server or VPN timestamp when possible; a time-zone mismatch can make an apparently unrelated event look like the failure. Capture whether the event occurs at sign-in, during resource discovery, or after credentials are submitted. Do not clear logs before an administrator has reviewed them.

Contact the administrator when the code remains tied to a work account, domain, certificate, VPN, or policy-controlled service. Supply:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the exact operation and resource;
  • the local timestamp and time zone;
  • the account and device name;
  • whether the issue reproduces on another approved device or account;
  • recent changes and the steps already tried;
  • the relevant Event Viewer entries.

An administrator may need to examine domain trust, computer-account status, certificate issuance, server-side logs, conditional-access rules, or VPN configuration. Those changes require authority over the environment and cannot be inferred safely from the hexadecimal code alone.

Windows 10 support timing

Microsoft states that free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 device may therefore have a different update and support path from a Windows 11 device. This does not change the meaning of 0x00000575, but it affects which updates and assistance are available. Check the device’s edition, support eligibility, and organization’s upgrade policy before assuming that a missing update is an authentication fix.

What not to do

  • Do not treat every 0x00000575 report as a Windows Update failure.
  • Do not apply an unverified registry edit, certificate bypass, or downloaded executable that promises a universal repair.
  • Do not disable firewall, endpoint security, or certificate validation permanently to make one connection work.
  • Do not remove a device from a domain, reset trust, or change organization-wide policy without the responsible administrator.
  • Do not assume that a successful Safe Mode boot proves the account or server is healthy.
  • Do not make several unrelated changes at once; otherwise you may lose the evidence showing which change affected authentication.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, clean temporary and cache files, review vulnerabilities and potentially unwanted apps, and provide tools such as real-time boost, file shredder, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every authentication failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0x00000575 a Windows Update error?

No. Microsoft defines 0x00000575 as ERROR_MUTUAL_AUTH_FAILED, an authentication status. It can appear while connecting to a work resource, VPN, certificate-backed service, network share, or application. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter only when an update or upgrade is also involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did the error appear after I changed my password?

A password change can leave an old sign-in session, cached credential, VPN connection, or service authentication attempt using outdated information. Sign out and back in, reconnect the approved network or VPN, and check for account lockout or a required new sign-in method. Contact the account administrator if the problem continues.

Can a home user fix ERROR_MUTUAL_AUTH_FAILED without IT?

Sometimes. Verify time and time zone, the intended account, network path, certificate status, pending updates, drivers, and security alerts. If the failing service is owned by an employer, school, VPN provider, or application vendor, only that administrator may be able to correct its certificate, trust, or policy.

Should I disable certificate validation or my firewall?

No. Those controls may be rejecting an unsafe or unauthorized connection for a reason. Review the certificate and security-product alert, and use only a short, administrator-approved diagnostic test. Restore protection immediately and do not keep a bypass as the fix.

What does it mean if the operation works in Safe Mode?

A third-party startup service, driver, VPN component, or security product becomes more likely, because Safe Mode loads fewer components. It does not prove that the account, certificate, server, or domain is healthy, and some authentication components do not run in Safe Mode at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I run DISM and SFC?

Use them when several unrelated Windows functions fail, an update left Windows inconsistent, or the error persists beyond one application. They can repair Windows files but cannot renew a certificate, repair a server-side trust relationship, or change an organization’s authentication policy.

What information should I give an administrator?

Provide the exact operation and resource, code and full message, local timestamp and time zone, account and device name, network or VPN state, recent changes, reproduction results, steps already tried, and relevant Event Viewer entries. Do not send passwords, private keys, or unnecessary confidential domain data.

Does Windows 10 still receive free fixes for this error?

Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Support and update availability in 2026 depends on the edition, eligibility, and any organization-managed program. The end of support does not alter what 0x00000575 means.

The Bottom Line

0x00000575 is ERROR_MUTUAL_AUTH_FAILED, not a one-click Windows Update fault. Identify the exact operation, then check time, credentials, network, certificates, and security policy before using updates, Safe Mode, driver isolation, System Restore, or DISM/SFC. Escalate domain, VPN, certificate, and managed-policy failures with timestamped logs instead of changing trust or security settings blindly.
