Error 0x000004D8 means Windows has rejected a logon from the current workstation: “The account is not authorized to log on from this station.” When it appears while connecting to a shared printer, the usual causes are a disabled printer share, unreachable host computer, incorrect host credentials, a driver mismatch, or Windows network-security policy—not a mechanical printer fault.
Work through the checks below in order. Start by confirming whether the error affects a shared printer or another network resource; then verify the host and network, reconnect the printer manually, update the exact model driver, reset Print Spooler when queues are stuck, and check the RPC and firewall requirements that apply to Windows 11 version 22H2 and later.

What error 0x000004D8 means
Microsoft lists hexadecimal code 0x000004D8 as ERROR_LOGIN_WKSTA_RESTRICTION. Its message is “The account is not authorized to log on from this station.” In practical terms, the account being used to reach another computer or its shared resource is not permitted to authenticate from the client workstation.

The code describes an authorization restriction. It does not, by itself, prove that the printer has a paper jam, broken motor, bad USB cable, or other mechanical defect. A shared-printer connection can fail before Windows ever sends a job to the printer.

Microsoft notes that shared-printer failures can also result from network settings, printer-sharing configuration, driver mismatches, or Windows security changes. Therefore, do not assume that every 0x000004D8 report has one universal cause. The computer hosting the printer, the client computer, the account used, and the Windows release all matter.
First, identify the failure context
Write down these details before changing settings:
- Does the code appear while opening a shared printer, or while opening another shared folder or network resource?
- What are the host computer name and the client computer name?
- Which account and password are being entered when Windows requests credentials?
- Are both computers connected to the same local network?
- Does the problem affect one user, one client PC, or every client that tries to use the share?
If the error occurs with a shared folder as well as a printer, concentrate first on host reachability, credentials, and authorization. If only one local USB printer fails on one PC, use the local-printer procedure later in this guide instead of changing network settings.
Choose the right troubleshooting path

Fix a shared printer connection
1. Confirm that the host is actually sharing the printer
Use the computer physically connected to the printer, or the computer that owns the printer queue.
- Open the printer’s properties on the host PC.
- Enable Share this printer.
- Record the exact Share name. You will need it in the form
\ComputerNamePrinterShareName. - Leave the host computer powered on and connected to the local network while testing from the client.
A share name is not necessarily the same as the printer’s marketing model name. Enter it exactly, including spaces and punctuation.

2. Verify network reachability before troubleshooting the printer
On the client PC, open File Explorer and enter \ComputerName in the address bar. If the host’s shared resources do not open, fix the computer-name, network, or firewall problem first. A printer cannot be added reliably until the client can reach the host.
- Confirm both PCs are connected to the same local network rather than one being on a guest network or a different router.
- Check the host computer name for spelling and try the name again from File Explorer.
- Keep the host awake and connected; a sleeping or disconnected host makes a shared printer appear unavailable.
- If File Explorer requests credentials, use the host PC’s username and password, as Microsoft instructs. Do not substitute the client account unless that account is also valid on the host.
If the host cannot be reached at all, repeatedly reinstalling the printer on the client will not solve the underlying problem.
3. Add the printer by its UNC path
Automatic discovery can fail even when the share itself works. Add the printer manually with the exact UNC path.

Windows 11:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- When Windows finishes searching, choose Add manually.
- Select Select a shared printer by name.
- Enter
\ComputerNamePrinterShareName, then continue.
Windows 10:
- Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add a printer or scanner.
- Choose the manual shared-printer option when the automatic search does not find the device.
- Enter the same UNC path:
\ComputerNamePrinterShareName.
When prompted, provide the host computer’s username and password. If the connection still shows an error, remove the failed printer entry, restart the client PC, and repeat the manual-add procedure. Removing and reconnecting clears a stale connection record; it does not change the account’s authorization on the host.

4. Separate an authorization problem from a driver problem
If File Explorer cannot open \ComputerName, stay with network and credential checks. If File Explorer opens the host but adding the printer fails, the share name, printer driver, or Windows print-security policy becomes more likely. If the printer adds successfully but jobs remain pending, continue with the driver and Print Spooler sections.
When every client account is rejected, ask the administrator of the host computer or domain to review which accounts are allowed to log on from that workstation. The 0x000004D8 message identifies the restriction, but the code alone does not reveal which local or domain policy caused it.
Update the printer driver
Microsoft says most printers need the latest driver to work correctly and directs users to the printer manufacturer’s website for current software and troubleshooting. Download the package for the exact printer model and the Windows version running on the client or host, as appropriate. Avoid similarly named packages for a different model and avoid unsigned or unrelated driver downloads.

- Check whether the client is running Windows 11 or Windows 10 and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit if the manufacturer asks for that information.
- Install the current driver supplied for that model and Windows release.
- Restart the PC if the installer requests it, then reconnect the shared printer and print a test page.
A driver update can correct a queue or compatibility failure, but it cannot grant an account permission that the host has denied. If the same 0x000004D8 authorization message appears before a print queue is created, continue checking credentials and host policy.

Reset Print Spooler when jobs or the service are stuck
Use this procedure for a local printer or for a shared printer whose queue is frozen after the connection itself has been verified. Clearing the spool folder removes queued print files; it does not, by itself, change account authorization.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer and go to
%WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERS. - Delete all files in that folder. Leave the folder itself in place. Administrative approval may be required.
- Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.
- Open the service’s properties and set Startup type to Automatic, then apply the setting.
After the service restarts, reconnect the printer if necessary and submit one small test document. If the queue immediately stops again, return to the exact-model driver check and inspect the first job that triggers the failure.
Check Windows 11 RPC and firewall requirements
On Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, Microsoft says print communication uses RPC over TCP by default. A firewall or network rule that blocks the required RPC traffic can prevent a client from reaching a shared printer even when the share name is correct.
- Ensure the RPC Endpoint Mapper port 135 is allowed between the client and host.
- Ensure the required high-range ephemeral ports used by RPC are not blocked between the two computers.
- Check the firewall policy on both ends and any network firewall between them.
- After changing an approved rule, remove and reconnect the printer so Windows retries the connection.
RPC over Named Pipes is available for special environments, but it is disabled by default on the relevant Windows 11 configuration. Enable it only when the network design specifically requires it and the administrator understands the security and compatibility implications. Do not enable alternate RPC behavior merely as a first guess.
When the printer is local rather than shared
A USB or directly attached printer does not use the shared-workstation authorization path. For that case, prioritize the physical connection, the exact model driver, the print queue, and Print Spooler.
- Reconnect the cable directly to the PC and confirm that Windows detects the device.
- Install the current driver for the exact model and Windows release.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete printer entries so applications target the intended queue.
- Clear stuck jobs and restart Print Spooler using the procedure above.
- Print a test page from the printer’s Windows properties before testing from a particular application.
If a local printer still produces 0x000004D8 while accessing another network resource at the same time, treat the network-resource error separately; the local printer hardware is not evidence of the authorization cause.
Windows 10 version and support note
The same sharing, driver, credential, and spooler checks apply to Windows 10. However, Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC can still contain a shared printer, but it no longer receives normal Windows 10 support updates after that date. Keep this lifecycle status in mind when evaluating a long-term network-printing setup.

Document the result of each checkpoint rather than repeating the same installation:
- Whether
\ComputerNameopens in File Explorer. - The exact share path used and whether the host requested credentials.
- Which account was supplied and whether another authorized host account works.
- Whether the failure affects one client or every client.
- The printer model, installed driver version, and Windows version.
- Whether Print Spooler remains running after the queue is cleared.
- Whether the host and client firewall policies allow TCP port 135 and the required RPC ephemeral ports.
These observations tell an administrator whether to investigate the host account restriction, the network path, the printer driver, the spooler service, or RPC policy. They also prevent a local queue repair from being mistaken for a fix to a workstation authorization problem.
