Error 0x0000049E does not have a clearly named, universal entry in Microsoft’s reviewed Win32 error reference. Treat it as a context-dependent status value rather than proof of one specific Windows failure. When it appears while printing, the practical causes to investigate are a stopped Print Spooler, a stuck queue, a disconnected printer, or an outdated or conflicting model-specific driver.

Work through the manual checks below in order. First record the exact message and what triggered it, then run the Windows printer troubleshooter, check the connection, update or remove conflicting drivers, clear queued jobs, and reset the Print Spooler. If the code appears in a non-printing application, stop using printer-only fixes and identify the application or device that generated it.

What error 0x0000049E means

Hexadecimal Windows status values are useful only when they can be mapped to a documented component and operation. Microsoft’s reviewed Win32 reference does not list a clearly named standard entry for 0x0000049E; it lists nearby values but not this exact one. That means the number alone cannot establish whether Windows, a printer driver, an application, or another device produced the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same value can therefore require different remedies in different situations. A print dialog, a printer utility, and an unrelated application may display a hexadecimal value supplied by their own component. Record the surrounding text and the failed operation before changing system settings. Microsoft also documents an Error Lookup Tool that can help test hexadecimal status values, but a lookup result should not override the evidence from the application and device that produced the error.

Record the failure before changing anything

Write down these details while the message is visible:

  • The complete error text, including any words before or after 0x0000049E.
  • The application that displayed it: a document editor, Windows Settings, a printer manufacturer utility, or another program.
  • The exact action that failed, such as printing, adding a printer, opening a document, or starting an application.
  • The printer’s make and model, if a printer is involved.
  • Whether the printer connects by USB, Wi-Fi, or a shared network connection.
  • Whether other printers or applications on the same PC work.
  • Whether the failure began immediately after a Windows or driver update.

This information separates a local printer problem from a broader Windows or application problem. If the code appears only with one printer, concentrate on that printer’s queue, connection, and driver. If every printer fails, the Print Spooler or Windows configuration becomes more likely. If no printing action is involved, use the application and event details to identify the responsible component instead of assuming the code has a printer meaning.

Run Windows’ printer troubleshooter

Windows 11

  1. Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
  2. Search for printer problems or open the automated printer troubleshooter entry.
  3. Allow the diagnostic process to check the printer and apply the fixes it offers.
  4. Try a test page or the original print job after it finishes.

Microsoft specifically directs Windows 11 users to start with the automated printer troubleshooter in Get Help. It attempts diagnostics and common corrections, but it cannot repair every hardware, network, or vendor-driver fault.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Select the affected printer and use the available troubleshooting option, or follow the printer troubleshooting path in Microsoft’s Windows support guidance.
  4. Apply the proposed fix and print a test page.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. The printer troubleshooting sequence can still be used on an existing Windows 10 installation, but the operating system no longer receives normal support after that date.

Power-cycle the printer and verify its connection

A printer that has lost power, a wireless connection, or a reliable USB link can leave Windows waiting for a response and make the queue appear stuck. Perform a complete restart rather than simply pressing a sleep or wake button.

  1. Turn the printer off using its power control.
  2. Unplug it from the electrical outlet for about 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power, turn the printer on, and wait until its display or status lights indicate that it is ready.
  4. For a USB printer, firmly reconnect the cable at both the printer and the PC. If the cable is visibly damaged or unreliable, test with a known-good cable before changing Windows settings.
  5. For a wireless printer, confirm that wireless networking is enabled on the printer and that it is available on the intended network. A printer connected to a different network or access point will not receive jobs from the PC.
  6. Retry a small test document.

Do not replace a cable merely because the hexadecimal message appeared. Cable replacement is relevant when a wired connection is damaged, loose, or intermittently disconnecting.

Update the correct printer driver and remove conflicts

Printer drivers translate Windows print jobs into instructions the specific model understands. Microsoft identifies conflicting, outdated, or corrupted drivers as a documented cause of Print Spooler crashes. Installing a generic driver for a similar model can leave the original problem in place, so use the current driver for the exact printer model from its manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the manufacturer’s current driver

  1. Identify the printer’s complete model name and revision, if one is shown on the device.
  2. Obtain the latest Windows driver offered by the printer manufacturer for that exact model and your Windows edition.
  3. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. If the installer asks whether to use USB, Wi-Fi, or a shared network connection, select the connection the printer actually uses.
  4. Restart the PC if the installer requests it, then print a test page.

Remove unnecessary or duplicate drivers

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Print queues or Printers.
  3. Look for old entries, duplicate entries, or drivers belonging to printers that are no longer present.
  4. Uninstall only entries you can identify as unnecessary. Keep the driver for the printer you still use.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted, then install the current model-specific driver and test printing again.

Driver removal is especially important when the spooler crashes as soon as a job is submitted. If you are unsure which entry belongs to the active printer, note the model and connection first rather than deleting entries at random.

Clear a stuck print queue

A failed job can remain in the queue and block later jobs. Cancel every pending job before testing the printer again.

Windows 11 queue path

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the affected printer.
  3. Open its print queue.
  4. Cancel each listed job, starting with the oldest if Windows presents an order.
  5. Wait for the queue to become empty, then submit a small test print.

Windows 10 queue path

  1. Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the printer and open its queue.
  3. Cancel every pending document.
  4. Retry only after the queue is clear.

If a job refuses to cancel, or the queue window closes and immediately reopens with the same jobs, reset the Print Spooler as described next. Do not keep resubmitting the document; each attempt can add another blocked job.

Reset the Print Spooler safely

The Print Spooler is the Windows component that manages the printing process. A failed or crashed spooler can leave jobs stuck and make a responsive printer appear unavailable. Microsoft’s reset sequence stops the service, removes the queued files, starts the service again, and sets it to start automatically with Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Start menu, type Services, and open the Services app. Approve an administrator prompt if Windows asks for one.
  2. Find Print Spooler in the list.
  3. Right-click it, choose Stop, and select OK if a confirmation appears.
  4. Open File Explorer and enter %WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERS in the address bar.
  5. Delete the files inside that folder. Delete the files, not the PRINTERS folder itself. If Windows reports that a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Print Spooler is stopped.
  6. Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
  7. Open the service’s properties, set Startup type to Automatic, and apply the change.
  8. Close Services, reconnect or wake the printer, and print a test page.

Resetting the spooler removes pending jobs, so documents that were waiting will need to be submitted again. If the service stops again immediately after a new job arrives, suspect a conflicting or outdated driver and repeat the driver-cleanup procedure rather than repeatedly clearing the same queue.

If Windows still shows the printer as offline

After the power-cycle, queue cleanup, and spooler reset, check whether the printer is available independently of the failing application. Its own display or status lights should indicate readiness, and a wireless model should show that its wireless function is enabled. A USB model should remain connected while you open the printer’s Windows settings.

  1. Open the printer list in Windows Settings for your Windows version.
  2. Select the affected printer and open its queue or management page.
  3. Confirm that Windows is showing the intended printer, not an old duplicate with a similar name.
  4. Run another test page.
  5. If it remains offline, restart the Print Spooler again and review the manufacturer’s connection instructions for the exact model.

If another printer works from the same PC, the problem is probably limited to the offline printer’s connection, queue, or driver. If every printer is offline, concentrate on the spooler and shared driver entries. Avoid changing unrelated Windows services while diagnosing this one.

When the code is not related to printing

Do not force a printer diagnosis onto a non-printing failure. If an application shows 0x0000049E while opening a file, connecting to another device, or performing a different operation, capture the application name, full message, and exact action. Check whether the same action works in another application and whether the failure follows one account, one device, or the entire PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the application vendor’s documentation or support channel to identify the component that generated the status value. The absence of a matching standard entry in Microsoft’s Win32 reference means that a universal “0x0000049E fix” cannot be stated safely. The responsible vendor may use the value for an internal condition unrelated to printing.

What to do after a Windows or driver update

An update can expose a previously dormant driver conflict or install a driver that does not match the printer model. First clear any queue, then verify that the current manufacturer driver is installed and remove obsolete duplicates. If the spooler crashes again as soon as a job is submitted, record which printer and driver were active at that moment; that evidence is more useful than the hexadecimal number by itself.

Keep the printer’s model, connection type, Windows version, and the date the problem began together with the full error text. Those details let a manufacturer or Microsoft support technician distinguish a spooler failure from a device-specific compatibility issue.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

  • The printer does not power on or reports a hardware fault on its own display.
  • A known-good USB cable and a verified wireless connection both fail.
  • The Print Spooler will not start even after its queue files are removed.
  • The spooler crashes repeatedly after the exact model driver is reinstalled and duplicate drivers are removed.
  • The error appears in a non-printing application and returns with details pointing to that application or another device.

At that point, provide support with the full message, application, printer model, connection type, Windows version, driver version, and the steps that reproduced the failure. Do not describe the value as a confirmed Microsoft error name when the reference does not provide one.
