How to Fix Error 0x000002D8 on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x000002D8 means Windows detected that the computer’s system firmware (BIOS) changed. Microsoft names it ERROR_FIRMWARE_UPDATED. The code alone does not prove that a BIOS update failed, that Windows is corrupted, or that hardware must be replaced. Restart safely, identify what changed, and then work through Windows’ built-in checks before considering a model-specific firmware recovery.

What error 0x000002D8 means

Microsoft’s Win32 error table defines hexadecimal code 0x000002D8 as ERROR_FIRMWARE_UPDATED. Its message is: “Windows has detected that the system firmware (BIOS) was updated (previous firmware date = %2, current firmware date %3).” The dates in that message are the previous and current firmware dates recorded by Windows.

This is a detection message, not a diagnosis of the underlying cause. It can appear after a deliberate BIOS update, a manufacturer firmware package, a motherboard replacement, a reset that restored firmware defaults, or another operation that changed the firmware record. It may also be reported alongside a restart, an installation failure, or a separate driver problem.

  • The code does not, by itself, say that the BIOS flash failed.
  • It does not establish that Windows system files are damaged.
  • It does not mean that a component must be replaced.
  • It does not identify which firmware package or device caused the change.

Use the event that surrounded the message—such as a BIOS update, a new device, a Windows Update failure, or repeated restarts—to choose the next step. If a firmware screen still shows a progress bar or warns not to power off, do not interrupt it.

Before troubleshooting: capture the context

Write down the exact wording, when it appeared, and what happened immediately beforehand. This prevents an unnecessary BIOS rollback when the code is only confirming a completed update.

  • Did the message appear immediately after a BIOS or UEFI update?
  • Was a manufacturer firmware utility, dock update, or motherboard replacement involved?
  • Did the computer resume from hibernation, reset its firmware settings, or install a Windows update?
  • Does Windows boot to the desktop, boot only intermittently, or fail to boot?
  • Are there new stop codes, freezes, missing devices, or installation errors?

Photograph any firmware-screen message and record the computer or motherboard model. If Windows still starts, press Win, type System Information, and open it. Record the values for System Model and BIOS Version/Date. Do not download a BIOS file until the model is verified.

Safe first response

Restart once

If no firmware update is visibly running and Windows is responsive, choose Start > Power > Restart. A single restart can clear a one-time status condition and lets Windows complete pending device detection. If the machine is in the middle of a firmware operation, leave it connected to power and wait instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the problem is recurring

After the restart, note whether the message returns, whether Windows reaches the desktop, and whether the same application or update fails. A one-time notification after a known BIOS update needs a different response from a message that appears on every boot with crashes or missing hardware.

Review the surrounding event

Open Event Viewer from the Start menu and inspect Windows Logs > System around the time of the message. Look for entries from Windows Update, device installation, unexpected restarts, or firmware utilities. The event log can supply context; it cannot replace the manufacturer’s instructions for changing firmware.

If Windows is unstable or will not start normally

Enter Safe Mode

Microsoft recommends Safe Mode when recurring stop-code or restart problems prevent normal troubleshooting. Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers, which helps separate a basic Windows problem from a recently loaded driver or service.

  1. From the sign-in screen or desktop, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. If Windows will not reach that screen, interrupt startup twice; Windows should enter the Recovery Environment on the next start.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. When the list appears, press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

In Safe Mode, remove a recently installed utility, collect event details, and perform the checks below. If the computer is stable only in Safe Mode, suspect a driver, startup service, or newly attached device rather than assuming the firmware itself failed.

Disconnect recently added hardware

Power down and disconnect nonessential hardware added shortly before the problem: external storage, docks, USB adapters, expansion cards, or newly installed internal components. Keep the keyboard, display, and required input devices connected. Microsoft includes removal of recently added hardware in its troubleshooting guidance for recurring restarts and installation problems.

Restart after each change so you know which action affected the symptom. Do not open a laptop or remove an internal component unless you are comfortable with the manufacturer’s service procedure and warranty requirements.

Check Device Manager for driver and device failures

Even when the trigger was firmware, Windows may rediscover hardware with a warning. Right-click Start, choose Device Manager, and look for a yellow warning icon or an entry under Other devices.

Update a device driver

  1. Expand the category containing the warning, right-click the device, and select Update driver.
  2. Choose Search automatically for drivers, or use the driver package supplied on the computer or device manufacturer’s official support page.
  3. Restart and check whether the warning and the 0x000002D8 symptom return.

Disable or uninstall a recently changed device

If the problem began after a device or driver change, open the device’s Properties. On the Driver tab, use Roll Back Driver when Windows offers it and the timing clearly matches the problem. Otherwise, choose Disable device for a test, or Uninstall device and restart so Windows can detect it again. Do not disable storage, chipset, or boot-critical devices unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically direct you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make sure Windows Update has room and a current update state

Low free space can prevent update staging and leave a restart or installation loop. Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10, and make enough space for the pending update. Remove only files you recognize, and keep backups of personal data.

Then open Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Windows 10). Select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when requested. If an update is already downloading or installing, allow it to finish rather than powering off.

Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter

The troubleshooter can reset common update components and report what it changed. Microsoft has moved the entry point between Windows releases:

  • Windows 11: open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. On supported builds, the Get Help app may open the same guided troubleshooter.
  • Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.

Apply the suggested repairs, restart even if the tool does not request it, and return to Windows Update to check again. The troubleshooter addresses Windows Update conditions; it does not rewrite the BIOS.

Repair Windows system files from an elevated Command Prompt

Use these commands when the message is accompanied by update failures, damaged-component errors, or unexplained Windows instability. They repair Windows files and the component store; they do not roll back firmware.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter. Wait for the operation to reach completion; interrupting it can leave the repair unfinished.
  3. When DISM completes, enter sfc /scannow and press Enter. Wait until System File Checker reports its result.
  4. Restart the computer, then retry Windows Update or the operation that originally produced the message.

Microsoft documents this order—DISM first, then SFC—because SFC can use the repaired component store as its source. If either command reports an error, record the exact text rather than repeatedly running it without addressing the reported condition.

Use recovery options when the issue began after a system change

If ordinary troubleshooting does not resolve repeated restarts or a failed update, Windows Recovery Environment offers choices with different effects. Select Troubleshoot from the recovery screen and choose the least destructive option that fits the evidence.

Option When it fits Does it change firmware? Personal files Important limitation
Safe Mode Windows starts only with minimal drivers or services No Preserved It is a diagnostic startup, not a permanent repair
System Restore The problem began after a driver, application, or Windows change and a restore point exists No Personal files are preserved; drivers and apps installed after the restore point may be removed It cannot undo a BIOS flash
Startup Repair Windows cannot boot normally and startup files may be involved No Designed to preserve files It may not correct a model-specific firmware problem
Reset this PC or other recovery installation Windows remains unusable after less destructive options No Choice-dependent; read the keep/remove-files screen carefully Back up data first and expect applications to be removed

Choose System Restore when a suitable restore point predates the symptoms. If you use a reset or reinstall, copy important files to another location first and verify that you have account credentials and installation media for required applications.

When and how to handle a firmware-specific problem

If 0x000002D8 repeats immediately after a BIOS or other firmware change, stop treating it as an ordinary Windows-file error. Identify the exact computer or motherboard model, the current BIOS version, and the previous version if it is available in the firmware screen, update utility, or event history.

Use only the exact manufacturer procedure

Go to the support page for the computer or motherboard manufacturer and match the model and revision printed on the device. Read the instructions for recovery, reflash, or rollback for that exact model. BIOS procedures differ: some systems provide a dedicated recovery file and key sequence, while others require an authorized service center. Microsoft does not publish one universal rollback command.

  • Keep the computer connected to reliable AC power.
  • Confirm the firmware package is for the exact model and board revision.
  • Back up personal files before attempting a recovery.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s required USB format, file name, port, and key sequence exactly.
  • Do not close the lid, press the power button, or remove the USB device while a flash is in progress.

Never use firmware downloaded for an unrelated model, and avoid third-party “BIOS fixer” utilities. If the manufacturer’s recovery procedure fails, the machine cannot reach its firmware screen, or the model is uncertain, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider rather than improvising a flash.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, although the operating system continues to run. A Windows 10 computer can still display 0x000002D8 and use the manual steps above, but the absence of a newer update is not necessarily an error. Consider the device manufacturer’s Windows 10 support documentation and a supported upgrade path when planning longer-term maintenance.
