How to Fix Error 0x000002C8 on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x000002C8 means that Windows is checking a volume’s file system. Microsoft defines it as ERROR_CHECKING_FILE_SYSTEM, with the message “Checking file system on %wZ.” The code is a status message, not proof that a particular component has failed. Let an in-progress check finish, then use the troubleshooting path that matches what happened: a one-time startup check, a repeating loop, an update or installation interruption, or a PC that will not boot.

What error 0x000002C8 means

The hexadecimal value 0x000002C8 is the Win32 status ERROR_CHECKING_FILE_SYSTEM. Windows displays the accompanying text as “Checking file system on %wZ.” The %wZ portion is a placeholder for the volume or drive name that Windows is examining.

This distinction matters. The message reports an operation in progress; it does not identify one failed part, predict that a hard drive is dead, or establish that malware is present. It also does not, by itself, tell you which repair command or third-party utility is needed. The useful evidence is the context around it: whether the check completes, whether it returns at every startup, whether it appears during Windows Update or setup, and whether Windows can still start.

If the percentage or other progress indicator is moving, leave the computer powered on and allow the check to complete. Interrupting a file-system check can leave you with the same startup problem and make diagnosis harder. When it finishes, restart normally and observe whether Windows reaches the desktop without showing the message again.

First decision: identify when the message appears

Where you see 0x000002C8 First action What to collect if it returns
Once during startup, with continuing progress Wait for completion, then restart The volume name shown in place of %wZ and whether Windows starts normally
At every startup or in a loop Enter Safe Mode and continue diagnosis Recent hardware, driver, or Windows changes and whether Safe Mode starts
During Windows Update, setup, or an upgrade Run Windows Update troubleshooting, restart, and check for updates again The update or setup stage where the message appears and any attached failure text
Before Windows can reach the sign-in screen Use Windows recovery options; if necessary, start recovery from installation media Whether Advanced options opens and which recovery choices are available

Do not treat these as four different error codes. They are four situations in which the same status can be reported, and each situation changes the safest next step.

Fix a one-time startup check

1. Let the process finish

  1. Keep the computer connected to power, especially a laptop.
  2. Do not press the power button merely because the screen says “Checking file system.”
  3. Wait until the check reaches its end or Windows continues to start.
  4. After you reach the desktop, restart from Start > Power > Restart.

A single completed check followed by a normal startup is usually a completed diagnostic event rather than a continuing fault. You do not need to install a cleaner or replace storage solely because this code appeared once.

2. Record the details before moving on

If the screen names a drive or volume, write it down exactly. Also note whether the message appeared after a forced shutdown, an interrupted restart, a hardware change, or an update attempt. Those details are more useful than the hexadecimal value alone when you later review drivers or recovery options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop a repeating startup loop with Safe Mode

When the check comes back on every restart, or Windows repeatedly fails to reach the desktop, use Safe Mode to load a reduced set of drivers and services. Microsoft recommends Safe Mode when Windows is having trouble restarting.

Entering Safe Mode when Windows still reaches the sign-in screen

  1. Hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart from the sign-in screen or Start menu.
  2. On the blue recovery screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. After the numbered list appears, choose 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
  4. Sign in and check whether the repeated file-system message is absent in this reduced environment.

Use ordinary Safe Mode unless you specifically need network access for a diagnostic download or account sign-in. Networking loads additional components and is not required to inspect local devices or remove recently added hardware.

If Windows cannot show the recovery menu

Allow Windows to enter its automatic recovery environment after failed starts, then choose Advanced options and follow the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings route. If the recovery environment never appears, start the PC from Windows installation media and select Repair your computer instead of installing Windows. From there, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options. A Command Prompt is available in that menu for advanced diagnosis, but use it only if you understand the command you intend to run and the volume it targets.

Remove hardware added before the problem

Disconnect hardware that was installed or plugged in shortly before 0x000002C8 began. Start with nonessential USB devices, external drives, docks, expansion cards, and newly installed internal components. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the hardware required to boot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Shut down from Windows when possible. If Windows is stuck, use the recovery or power procedure recommended for your PC rather than repeatedly cutting power.
  2. Unplug one recently added device at a time.
  3. Start Windows and check whether the file-system message returns.
  4. If the message disappears, reconnect devices individually and restart between changes so you can identify the trigger.

Microsoft also advises removing nonessential peripherals while troubleshooting setup or upgrade failures. Do not infer from this step that the disconnected device is defective; the result only tells you that the startup or update path changes when that device is absent.

Inspect drivers in Device Manager

A driver or device change can coincide with restart trouble and repeated checks. From the desktop, right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the categories related to hardware you recently added or changed, then look for a warning icon.

Work through one suspect device

  1. Right-click the device and open Properties. Read the status shown on the General tab and note the device name and category.
  2. If the issue began immediately after a driver change, use the available driver rollback option when Windows offers it.
  3. Otherwise, check for a driver update through the device’s driver controls, or temporarily disable the suspect device to test whether the restart behavior changes.
  4. If disabling does not help, restore the device to its previous state or uninstall it only when you know how Windows will reinstall or restore the driver.
  5. Restart after each meaningful change and record the result.

Do not disable storage or boot-critical hardware casually. If Safe Mode is the only environment that starts, perform the same inspection there and make one change at a time. A warning icon is a lead for investigation, not proof that the device caused the file-system check.

Check available disk space

Windows troubleshooting guidance includes keeping adequate free disk space. A nearly full system volume can interfere with updates, temporary files, and recovery operations, even though 0x000002C8 does not state that low space is the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, select System > Storage. In Windows 10, select System > Storage.
  3. Review the system drive’s free space and the categories consuming it.
  4. Remove only files you recognize as disposable, and empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate.
  5. Restart and test the same action that previously produced the message.

Avoid deleting Windows or application folders manually. If you cannot create enough working space without guessing which files are safe, stop and use the built-in storage categories or seek assistance rather than removing system data.

Install pending Windows updates

For recurring stop-code or restart problems, Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance directs users to check for and install the latest available updates. The same check is useful on Windows 11 when the PC can reach Settings.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install the updates Windows offers, including any restart required to finish them.
  4. Restart once more and check whether 0x000002C8 returns.

If an update repeatedly fails at the same stage, do not keep forcing restarts while the system is applying it. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter described next, then retry the update.

Run Windows Update troubleshooting when the message appears during an update

When the status appears during download, installation, or upgrade, use Microsoft’s automated Windows Update troubleshooter. Current Windows versions expose it through Get Help; Windows also provides a Settings-based troubleshooter in supported editions.

Get Help route

  1. Open Get Help from the Start menu.
  2. Search for Windows Update troubleshooter.
  3. Follow the guided checks and allow the tool to apply the fixes it recommends.
  4. Restart when prompted.
  5. Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates again.

Settings route

  1. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run Windows Update.
  2. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot and open the Windows Update troubleshooter when it is listed.
  3. Apply the recommended action, restart, and retry Windows Update.

The troubleshooter is appropriate when the code is tied to an update workflow. It is not a reason to erase personal files or reset Windows after a one-time startup check.

Use recovery options for persistent restart failures

If Safe Mode, hardware isolation, driver checks, storage review, updates, and Windows Update troubleshooting do not stop the loop, move to Windows recovery rather than repeating the same restart. From the recovery environment, Microsoft lists System Restore and other recovery choices for persistent restart problems.

System Restore

Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore when a restore point from before the problem is available. Select a point that predates the hardware, driver, or update change you recorded. System Restore is intended to roll back system state; it is not a substitute for identifying a failing device or for recovering personal files.

Other recovery choices

The Advanced options screen may also expose startup repair and other tools, depending on the Windows installation. Read each option’s description before applying it. If Windows cannot boot from the internal drive, start from Windows installation media, select Repair your computer, and open the recovery tools from there. Keep the exact screen text and volume name available if you need support.

When the code does not prove a failed drive

Seeing “Checking file system” does not establish that a hard drive or solid-state drive has failed. It also does not prove malware, and it does not show that a particular third-party cleaner is required. Treat the code as a report that Windows is examining a volume.

Escalate the investigation when the check loops, freezes at the same point, appears alongside repeated crashes, or prevents every normal and Safe Mode start. Before seeking help, write down:

  • the complete on-screen wording and the volume named for %wZ;
  • whether the event occurs at startup, during an update, during setup, or during recovery;
  • recent hardware additions or removals;
  • recent driver or Windows changes;
  • whether Safe Mode starts;
  • whether the check completes or remains frozen.

This record lets a technician choose between update repair, device isolation, System Restore, or recovery-media work instead of guessing from the hexadecimal code.

A practical order of operations

Use this condensed sequence if you need a single checklist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wait for an in-progress startup check to finish.
  2. Restart and see whether Windows starts normally.
  3. If it repeats, enter Safe Mode.
  4. Disconnect hardware added before the first occurrence.
  5. Inspect warning icons and recent changes in Device Manager.
  6. Check free space on the Windows volume.
  7. Install pending Windows updates.
  8. If the event belongs to an update, run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help or Settings, restart, and check again.
  9. If Windows still cannot start, open recovery options and consider System Restore or recovery from installation media.
  10. Document the exact volume, timing, and behavior before escalating.

This order starts with the least disruptive action and branches according to what the computer can still do. It avoids treating a status code as a diagnosis it was never designed to provide.

After you have tried the built-in steps, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, temporary and cache cleanup, selected settings checks, and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
