Microsoft defines it as “The paging file cannot be created on a floppy disk.” On a current Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer, that usually means Windows or an installer is trying to place the paging file on a volume it considers unsuitable, or that the code was copied incorrectly. Verify the complete message and the operation that produced it, then check the paging-file destination, storage, drivers, disk health, Windows components and updates in that order.
What error 0x00000248 means
The hexadecimal value 0x00000248 converts to decimal 584. In Microsoft’s Win32 error-code specification, 584 is ERROR_FLOPPY_VOLUME, with the message: “The paging file cannot be created on a floppy disk.” The wording comes from an older storage model, but the code can still appear when modern Windows software is given a removable, disconnected or otherwise unsuitable destination for a paging file.

A paging file is disk space Windows uses as a supplement to physical memory. The error does not, by itself, prove that a floppy drive exists, that Windows is infected, or that one particular component is broken. Microsoft notes that system error codes can be returned in one component and displayed by another, so the application name, setup phase, event details and any accompanying HRESULT or NTSTATUS value matter.

Possible contexts include boot, Windows installation, an update, a driver or application installer, or an application operation that changes virtual-memory settings. Treat the code as a troubleshooting clue rather than a complete diagnosis.

First, capture the exact error and context
Before changing settings, write down the complete hexadecimal string, its text, and what Windows was doing. A partial value can lead to the wrong fix.
- Record whether the error appeared during startup, sign-in, Windows Setup, Windows Update, a driver installation or inside a particular application.
- Copy the entire message, including punctuation and any second code such as an HRESULT or NTSTATUS value.
- Note the program, installer or device named in the dialog and the drive letters visible at the time.
- If the message appears only once, check whether the same operation succeeds after a normal restart. Record the time and any recent hardware, storage or driver change.
If the display says 0xe0000248 rather than 0x00000248, stop and use the distinction explained later in this guide. The two values represent different errors.
Is error 0x00000248 dangerous?
The number itself is not a diagnosis of malware and is not proof that data has already been lost. The practical risk is that Windows may be unable to create or use a paging file, or that the same storage or driver problem could affect another operation. Do not repeatedly force a failed installation or remove disks while Windows is writing to them.
Back up important files before changing disk, virtual-memory or recovery settings. If the computer cannot boot normally, use another computer or external storage to preserve essential files before attempting extensive repairs. The commands below should be run from an elevated Command Prompt only when Windows is operating on the indicated installation.
Fix 0x00000248 step by step
1. Confirm that the paging-file destination is valid
Start with the setting most directly related to Microsoft’s definition. Open System Properties by pressing Win+R, entering sysdm.cpl, and pressing Enter. Select Advanced, choose Settings under Performance, open the Advanced tab, and select Change in the Virtual memory section.

- Review every volume listed in the Virtual Memory window.
- Look for a paging-file entry assigned to a floppy drive, removable device, disconnected disk, stale drive letter or a volume Windows cannot currently write to.
- Use a local fixed volume that is online, writable and has adequate free space. A Windows-managed paging-file setting is generally the least error-prone choice when you do not have a specific sizing requirement.
- If you change a volume assignment, select Set, confirm the dialogs, and restart when Windows requests it.
Do not unplug a disk that still has an active paging-file assignment. If the drive is missing, reconnect it first or use the Virtual Memory dialog to remove the stale assignment after confirming that another valid local volume is available.
2. Check the affected volume in Disk Management
Press Win+X and open Disk Management. Confirm that the volume selected for virtual memory is present, online and accessible with the expected drive letter. Check that File Explorer can create and delete a small test file on that volume and that substantial free space remains.

If the disk is shown as offline, reconnect its power or data connection, then use Disk Management’s Online action. Do not initialize or format a disk merely because it is listed as unavailable; those operations can destroy data. If the volume repeatedly disappears, produces I/O errors or cannot be written to, treat the storage fault as the primary problem and preserve data before continuing.
3. Undo a recent hardware or driver change
A newly added storage controller, disk, USB device or other driver can change which volumes Windows can see during startup or setup. Disconnect newly added nonessential hardware and retry the operation. If the machine will not restart normally, start Windows in Safe Mode:
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart from the Start menu or sign-in screen.
- Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, Startup Settings and Restart.
- After the restart, choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen.
In Windows, open Device Manager from the Start search and look for devices with a yellow exclamation mark. For the device associated with the failure, use the available action to update, disable or uninstall the driver, depending on what changed immediately before the error. Restart and test the original operation. If removing a driver makes the device unusable, return to Device Manager in Safe Mode and use the previous driver or reinstall the manufacturer-provided package.

4. Check disk health and free space
Windows needs free, writable disk space for paging files, updates and temporary installation data. Empty the Recycle Bin and remove only files you recognize as safe to delete; do not remove the Windows or application directories manually. If the error occurs during an update or Windows reports file-system problems, Microsoft documents this command:
- Search for Command Prompt, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Enter
chkdsk /f C:and press Enter. - If Windows says the volume is in use and asks to schedule the check, type
Y, press Enter, and restart. - Allow the check to finish before interrupting power. Retry the failed operation after Windows starts.
The command checks the C: volume. If Windows is installed on another letter in a recovery or setup environment, identify that installation first rather than blindly checking a different volume. A disk that reports recurring errors, becomes read-only or vanishes should be replaced or repaired after the data is secured.
5. Repair the Windows image and system files
Corrupted component files can make storage and setup operations fail even when the disk itself is healthy. Microsoft’s documented order is DISM first, followed by System File Checker.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. - Then run
sfc /scannowand wait until verification reaches 100 percent. - Restart Windows and retry the operation that produced
0x00000248.
Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause. DISM repairs the Windows component image used by subsequent repairs; SFC then checks protected system files against that image. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact result instead of repeatedly launching the same command and move to the update or recovery steps below.
6. Install current Windows updates
Open Settings and go to Windows Update (on Windows 11) or Update & Security, then Windows Update (on Windows 10). Select Check for updates, install the offered updates, restart when requested and check again until no further updates are offered for that session.

If the error occurs specifically while Windows Update is working, run the Windows Update troubleshooter from the troubleshooting area in Settings. Keep the computer connected to power and avoid shutting it down during an update. Retry the original update only after the restart has completed.
7. Retry in the same context and isolate the trigger
After each repair, repeat the operation that originally produced the code rather than testing an unrelated task. This tells you which change mattered. If the failure occurs only in one installer, download a fresh copy from its official publisher and check whether the installer is trying to select a removable drive or a drive letter that no longer exists. If it occurs only during startup, leave nonessential USB storage disconnected and test a normal boot after the disk and system-file checks.
When the error appears in an application, capture the application name, version, action being performed and the Windows Event Viewer entry at the same time. That information can identify whether the application is requesting an invalid paging-file destination or merely displaying a code returned by another component.
8. Use System Restore or another recovery option if the problem persists
If the paging-file assignment is valid, the volume is healthy and writable, drivers are stable, DISM and SFC complete, and updates do not help, use a recovery method appropriate to the failure. From Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, review the available options. In the Windows Recovery Environment, Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point without selecting a later configuration that caused the issue.
Read the effect of each recovery option carefully. Some choices can remove applications, settings or personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, preserve your files and use the recovery path recommended for the specific boot, setup or update failure. Keep the exact message and repair results for Microsoft or the application vendor’s support team.

There is no defensible universal “best fix” for this code. The correct branch depends on whether the paging-file destination is valid, whether storage is healthy and writable, whether a hardware or driver change preceded the failure, and whether DISM or SFC reports component corruption.
Do not confuse 0x00000248 with 0xe0000248
Microsoft’s driver-installation documentation lists 0xe0000248 as ERROR_DEVICE_INSTALL_BLOCKED, meaning device installation was blocked by group-policy settings. That value is not the same as 0x00000248 (decimal 584), which Microsoft defines as ERROR_FLOPPY_VOLUME.
If your dialog contains the leading e, investigate installation policy, organizational restrictions and the device-installation log instead of changing the paging file. If it contains only 0x00000248, follow the storage and virtual-memory sequence in this guide. Copying the complete value is the quickest way to avoid applying the wrong repair.

- The disk repeatedly goes offline, reports file-system errors or cannot retain files.
- The computer cannot boot even after the paging-file assignment and recent hardware changes are corrected.
- DISM, SFC or CHKDSK repeatedly fails, or reports errors that return after a restart.
- The error appears only in a business-managed computer where policy or security software controls storage and device installation.
- You cannot identify the application or Windows phase that generated the message.
In these cases, stop making destructive changes, secure important data, and provide support with the complete code, text, timing, Windows edition, recent changes, drive status and command results. Those details are more useful than reporting only “error 0x00000248.”
