Error 0x00000010 is Microsoft’s rare SPIN_LOCK_NOT_OWNED bug check, a kernel-level failure that can trigger a blue screen and an unexpected restart. It is not a normal application error. Start by recording the stop screen, disconnecting recently added hardware, and testing Windows in Safe Mode; then investigate drivers, updates, disk space, restore points, memory, and crash dumps in that order. If Windows cannot start, use Windows Recovery Environment and Startup Repair before attempting boot-configuration commands.
What error 0x00000010 means
Microsoft defines bug check 0x00000010 as SPIN_LOCK_NOT_OWNED. A spin lock is a low-level synchronization mechanism used by Windows kernel code and drivers. The stop condition means kernel code attempted to release or otherwise use a spin lock it did not own. Microsoft describes this bug check as appearing “very infrequently.”

Because the failure occurs in kernel mode, Windows may stop immediately to protect data and system integrity. The visible result can be a blue screen, an automatic restart, or a repeated restart cycle. The code alone does not identify one defective component: Microsoft’s troubleshooting material says stop errors can involve third-party driver code, hardware, Microsoft code, or corruption that prevents a definitive analysis.

Capture evidence before changing anything
Evidence is easiest to lose when a computer restarts automatically. If the machine can remain on the stop screen for a moment, use a phone to photograph it. Record:
- The exact stop code, including all zeroes:
0x00000010. - Any text after What failed.
- When the crash occurred and what the computer was doing.
- Whether a hardware device, driver, Windows update, utility, or security product was installed or updated shortly beforehand.
- Whether the same code appears after every restart or only during a particular activity.
Do not repeatedly power-cycle a system that is still writing data. Allow the stop screen to finish its collection process when possible.
First-line fixes for Windows 11 and Windows 10
1. Disconnect hardware added before the crashes
Shut down completely, then unplug external devices or remove recently installed internal hardware. Start with items added shortly before the first 0x00000010 failure: USB accessories, expansion cards, storage devices, docking hardware, or replacement components. Leave essential keyboard, mouse, display, and power connections attached.
Start Windows with the new hardware disconnected. If the crashes stop, reconnect one item at a time and restart between tests. The device that brings the stop error back is the leading suspect. If the computer still crashes with the hardware removed, reconnecting it later should wait until driver and memory checks are complete.
2. Start in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. It is useful when a normal startup is unstable because it lets you remove or roll back a recent driver without loading the full driver stack.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- At the numbered menu, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
You can also hold Shift while selecting Restart from the Windows power menu. If Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen, interrupting startup two or three times normally opens the recovery environment automatically; use that environment to reach Startup Settings.

Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent repair. If 0x00000010 does not occur there, a normal-startup driver or service becomes more likely. Perform the driver and update checks below while Safe Mode is available.
3. Check Device Manager for driver problems
Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it. Expand device categories and look for a yellow exclamation mark, an unknown device, or hardware whose driver was changed immediately before the crashes.
- Right-click the suspected device and choose Properties.
- Read the General tab for a device-status message and note the device name and manufacturer.
- On the Driver tab, select Update Driver and let Windows search, or install the current driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer when Windows Update does not provide one.
- If the problem began after an update, use Roll Back Driver when that button is available.
- If updating or rolling back does not help, choose Disable device or Uninstall device, restart, and test. Removing a driver is more invasive than disabling it, so record the device name first.
Do not remove random system devices simply because they are listed. Concentrate on recently changed hardware, a module named on the stop screen, or a device with an error status.
4. Install Windows and hardware-maker updates
In Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when requested. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Apply updates in stages if the computer is unstable, restarting after each required reboot.
For a device implicated by the crash, compare the installed driver with the current version offered by the hardware maker. Use the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and Windows edition. Avoid driver packages intended for a different model or architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Check available disk space
Windows and applications need free space for swap files, temporary work, updates, and other operations. Microsoft’s general blue-screen guidance suggests keeping roughly 10% to 15% of the system drive free. This is general guidance, not a proven cause of bug check 0x00000010.

Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10 to see the system-drive usage. Remove or move files only after confirming that you have a backup. Do not delete Windows folders or driver packages manually.
6. Use System Restore after a recent change
If the crashes started after a driver, hardware, or software change and a restore point exists, System Restore can return system files and driver settings to an earlier state without intentionally changing personal documents.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery in Windows 11, or search for Recovery in Windows 10.
- Select Open System Restore and choose a restore point dated before the suspected change.
- Use Scan for affected programs to see which drivers or applications would be changed.
- Confirm the restore, keep the computer powered on, and test after Windows restarts.
If no suitable restore point exists, continue with event logging, memory testing, and dump analysis rather than creating a new point after the failure.
Choose the least invasive next step
| Situation | First action | Reversibility | What to do next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows reaches the desktop and the crash followed a device change | Disconnect the device, then test Safe Mode and Device Manager | High | Roll back, update, disable, or uninstall the implicated driver |
| Windows reaches the desktop but restarts unpredictably | Install Windows updates, check free space, and inspect Event Viewer | High | Run memory testing and collect a dump if the code returns |
| The failure began after a driver or software change | Use System Restore to a point before that change | Usually reversible by restoring again | Reinstall only the needed, compatible driver or application |
| A named failing module or recent third-party driver is available | Investigate that driver in Device Manager and the hardware maker’s support package | High when rolled back or disabled | Use Driver Verifier selectively if ordinary checks do not identify the cause |
| Windows cannot reach the desktop | Enter WinRE and run Startup Repair, then Safe Mode | High | Use boot-repair commands only when the symptoms indicate boot configuration trouble |
Investigate recurring crashes
Review Event Viewer around the stop time
Press Win+X, choose Event Viewer, and open Windows Logs > System. Filter or scan the time window surrounding the blue screen for Critical and Error events. Note the event source, event ID, driver name, and the sequence immediately before the restart.
Event Viewer may show a power-loss or restart record rather than the original fault. Correlate several events instead of treating one generic entry as the culprit. Save relevant details before clearing logs or changing settings.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
Unreliable memory can produce different kernel stop codes from one restart to the next. Press Win+R, enter mdsched.exe, and choose Restart now and check for problems if you can restart immediately, or schedule the test for the next boot. Windows performs the test before loading the desktop.

After Windows starts, review the result in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System. Search for the MemoryDiagnostics-Results source. A reported memory error warrants shutting down and testing compatible memory modules individually or using the computer maker’s service procedure; do not assume a clean test proves that every hardware component is healthy.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Collect and inspect a memory dump
For repeated stop errors, preserve the available memory dump instead of deleting temporary diagnostic files. Windows debugging tools can inspect the dump and show the active thread, stack, and suspected module. Microsoft’s stop-error guidance recommends focusing on recently updated or suspicious third-party drivers.
A dump that identifies a third-party module is a stronger lead than the numeric code alone, but it still needs confirmation. Check whether the module belongs to a device or utility that changed before the failures, and compare its version with the hardware maker’s current release.
Use Driver Verifier only on selected drivers
Driver Verifier deliberately exercises driver behavior to expose illegal operations. It is an advanced diagnostic tool, not a general performance setting. Microsoft warns that verifying every driver at once can degrade performance or make the system unusable.
- Sign in with an administrator account and create a restore point if Windows is stable enough.
- Open Driver Verifier by searching for
verifier. - Choose the standard settings and select drivers by name rather than selecting every driver automatically.
- Target recently updated or suspicious third-party drivers, then restart and reproduce the failure.
- If a verification loop prevents startup, enter Safe Mode, run
verifier, choose Delete existing settings, and restart.
Use the resulting stop screen or dump to identify the driver, then update, roll back, disable, or uninstall that driver. Turn Driver Verifier off after testing; leaving it enabled can create unnecessary stress during normal use.

If Windows will not start
Open Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE can appear automatically after repeated failed starts. You can also boot from Windows installation or recovery media and select Repair your computer. Choose the matching Windows installation when prompted, then open Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
Best Value
Run Startup Repair first
Select Startup Repair and allow it to complete. Microsoft documents this tool for boot failures; it attempts to repair startup-related problems and writes a diagnostic log to %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. Startup Repair does not guarantee a fix for a kernel bug check, but it is the least invasive boot-recovery step when Windows cannot load.
Use Safe Mode from WinRE
If Startup Repair does not resolve the loop, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode. From there, remove a recently changed driver, use System Restore, or review event logs. If Safe Mode also fails, return to WinRE rather than repeatedly forcing normal boots.
Understand the limits of BOOTREC commands
At Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt, Microsoft documents commands including BOOTREC /FIXMBR and BOOTREC /FIXBOOT, along with procedures for rebuilding boot configuration data. These commands address boot-configuration problems; they are not a universal repair for the 0x00000010 bug check.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Use boot-code repair when the symptoms point to damaged or missing boot information, such as a boot-device error or a system that cannot find Windows after a partition or boot-loader change. Record the current configuration and identify the Windows volume in WinRE before changing boot data. If the computer reaches the desktop and only later shows SPIN_LOCK_NOT_OWNED, focus on drivers, hardware, memory, and dumps instead.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the code names the exact bad part: SPIN_LOCK_NOT_OWNED identifies the type of kernel failure, not a guaranteed component.
- Updating every driver at once: Make one controlled change so you can tell which action affected the crash.
- Running Driver Verifier against all drivers: Microsoft specifically cautions that this can make a system unusable.
- Using boot-repair commands as a general BSOD cure: BOOTREC targets boot configuration, not every kernel stop condition.
- Ignoring a recently added device: Disconnecting new hardware is a Microsoft first-line troubleshooting step and is reversible.
- Treating low disk space as a proven cause: The 10%–15% recommendation is general blue-screen guidance, not evidence that insufficient space caused this specific code.
- Deleting logs before reviewing them: Event Viewer records and dump files can provide the only clues when the stop screen names no module.
What a successful diagnosis looks like
A useful fix is one that stops the restarts and identifies the changed condition responsible. For example, if disconnecting a new adapter stops the crashes and uninstalling its recent driver allows normal startup, keep the adapter disconnected until a compatible driver is available. If Safe Mode is stable but normal mode is not, compare the drivers loaded only during normal startup. If memory testing reports errors, address the memory or its seating before continuing software experiments.
When no single change explains the failure, preserve the stop-screen details, Event Viewer entries, memory-test result, and dump analysis for the computer maker or a qualified technician. Microsoft provides diagnostic guidance, but there is no published one-click success rate or guaranteed repair for this rare bug check.
