ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR means Microsoft Edge could not negotiate or use QUIC, the UDP-based transport used by HTTP/3. The fastest way to confirm that diagnosis is to disable Edge’s experimental QUIC setting, relaunch the browser, and reload the page. If that works, you can leave QUIC disabled temporarily or apply the documented QuicAllowed policy on a managed Windows computer.
Do not assume the browser is always at fault. A VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus inspection layer, enterprise gateway, router, internet provider, or the website’s own HTTP/3 path can interrupt QUIC. The sequence below separates those possibilities without permanently weakening your security settings.

What ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR means
QUIC is a transport protocol designed for modern web connections. HTTP/3 runs over QUIC and sends that traffic over UDP rather than the TCP transport used by HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2. When Edge cannot complete the QUIC handshake, maintain the connection, or pass the traffic through an intermediary, it can display ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR.

The message identifies a failed protocol path, not a single defect. The same error can result from a site that is having trouble with HTTP/3, a local firewall rule, HTTPS or HTTP/3 inspection, a VPN or proxy, an enterprise gateway, a router, an ISP path, or a browser setting. There is no authoritative incidence rate for this error in Microsoft’s published documentation, so a percentage or universal “main cause” would be misleading.

Because HTTP/3 uses UDP, a network that handles ordinary HTTPS correctly can still mishandle QUIC. A page may therefore fail in Edge while other sites, or the same site on another network, continue to work.
Start with the reversible QUIC test
Disabling the experimental flag is the quickest diagnostic because it changes only Edge’s QUIC preference and can be reversed. It is a test, not proof that QUIC is unsafe or that the website is broken.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- In the address bar, enter
edge://flags/#enable-quicand press Enter. - Find Experimental QUIC protocol.
- Change its setting to Disabled.
- Select Relaunch when Edge offers to restart.
- Return to the page that produced the error and reload it.
If the page now loads, Edge has successfully fallen back from the failing QUIC/HTTP/3 path to another HTTP transport. That result narrows the problem to QUIC negotiation or something handling that traffic; it does not identify which intermediary or endpoint is responsible.
If the error remains, re-enable the flag before continuing unless you are deliberately testing a QUIC-disabled configuration. A failed flag test means the immediate fault may be unrelated to QUIC, or that another component is blocking the connection as well.
Interpret the result before changing anything permanent
The page works with QUIC disabled
Keep the temporary setting only while you investigate, or move to a policy-based control if a managed computer requires QUIC to remain blocked. On a personal computer, first test another network and review VPN, proxy, firewall, and inspection settings. Those checks can reveal the cause without leaving a browser-wide workaround in place.

The page still fails with QUIC disabled
Do not keep changing QUIC settings blindly. Test another HTTPS site, restart Edge, and try the same failing page on a different network. If unrelated sites fail too, the issue is more likely local to Edge, the device, or the network path. If only one destination fails, the destination or its connection path remains a strong possibility.
Apply a persistent QUIC policy only when appropriate
A flags change is convenient for diagnosis but is not a durable administrative control. On a managed Windows device, the Microsoft Edge Allow QUIC protocol policy, identified as QuicAllowed, is the documented way to enforce the setting. Microsoft states: “If you disable this policy, the QUIC protocol is blocked.”
Registry location and value
For a local policy deployment, the documented registry location is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftEdge
Set QuicAllowed to a DWORD (32-bit) value of 0. After the policy is applied, restart Edge and retest the page.
- Sign in with an account permitted to change machine-wide policy.
- Open Registry Editor only if your organization’s change-control rules allow it.
- Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftEdge. Create theMicrosoftEdgekeys if your approved deployment method requires them. - Create or edit the DWORD named
QuicAllowedand set its value to0. - Close Registry Editor, restart Edge, and test the affected URL.
Registry changes affect all users of the computer and can be overwritten by domain or device-management policy. Enterprise administrators should deploy the policy through their normal management system rather than asking individual users to edit the registry. If you later need to restore the default behavior, remove the policy value or set it according to your organization’s approved Edge policy, then restart the browser.

Do not use a permanent QUIC block as a substitute for finding an enterprise inspection or firewall misconfiguration. It may keep a particular site reachable while leaving the underlying network problem unresolved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDetermine whether one site or the whole connection is affected
The scope of the failure is one of the most useful clues. Perform the tests in this order and record what you see.
- Open another unrelated HTTPS website in the same Edge window.
- Open the failing URL in a private Edge window. This can help distinguish an extension or profile state from a general network issue, although it does not bypass network controls.
- Connect the computer to a phone hotspot or another permitted network and try the same URL.
- Compare the result with another device on the original network if you have one available.
| Observed result | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one website fails | The destination or its HTTP/3 path may be involved. | Test that URL on another network and report the comparison to the site operator or network administrator. |
| Many or all HTTPS websites fail | The local browser, network, security stack, or gateway is more likely. | Review intermediaries, refresh Edge, and involve IT or the ISP with the test results. |
| The page works on a phone hotspot but not the normal network | The original router, gateway, ISP path, VPN route, or inspection layer is implicated. | Check network controls and provide the A/B result to the network owner. |
| The page fails on every tested network | A destination-side issue, Edge installation/profile problem, or another local factor remains possible. | Update and repair Edge, disable traffic-changing extensions, and escalate with the URL and version. |
A single-site result is not proof that the website is defective; it simply tells you where to focus. Likewise, a broad failure does not prove your ISP is responsible. The comparison prevents you from applying a machine-wide change when the problem is limited to one destination.
Check VPN, proxy, firewall, and inspection layers
QUIC can be disrupted anywhere between Edge and the destination. Make one controlled change at a time, record the result, and restore protection immediately after a test.
VPN
Disconnect the VPN briefly, if your personal use and security policy permit, and retry the URL. If the page works only when the VPN is disconnected, contact the VPN administrator or provider for a supported HTTP/3 or UDP configuration. Do not treat a permanent disconnect as the fix if the VPN is required for work or privacy.

Proxy
Review the proxy configured by Windows or your organization. An explicit proxy, automatic configuration script, or gateway may handle TCP web traffic but not QUIC. On a managed device, do not replace the proxy settings yourself; capture the error and ask the administrator whether QUIC is supported or intentionally blocked.
Firewall and antivirus inspection
Some security products inspect HTTPS or HTTP/3 traffic. Under your organization’s change-control rules, use a short, supervised test to determine whether that inspection layer is involved. Never leave the firewall or antivirus protection disabled, and do not create a broad allow rule simply to make one page load. The durable fix is a narrowly scoped, vendor-supported rule or policy that preserves protection.
Enterprise gateways
Corporate gateways, secure-access services, and other inspection points can enforce a persistent QUIC decision. If the computer is managed, ask the network team whether QUIC is blocked intentionally and whether the organization has a standard QuicAllowed policy. A user-side flags change can be overwritten the next time management policy refreshes.
Refresh Edge after the network checks
Microsoft lists updating Edge, restarting it, clearing browsing data, and disabling extensions among its general troubleshooting actions. These steps are useful when the error is caused by stale browser state or an extension that changes traffic or authentication.
Update and restart
- Open Edge’s menu, choose Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge.
- Allow Edge to check for updates and install any offered update.
- Use Restart or close every Edge window and open the browser again.
- Retry the URL before making another configuration change.
Record the Edge version shown on the About page. Version information is important when an administrator or site operator compares your result with a known browser or gateway issue.

Clear cached data
- Open the Edge menu and select Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Clear browsing data, choose the option to clear cached images and files. If you also clear cookies or site data, expect to sign in again.
- Close and reopen Edge, then test the page.
Clearing data cannot repair a blocked UDP path, but it removes stale local state that can complicate testing. If the issue is limited to one account or profile, compare with a clean profile only within your organization’s rules.
Disable traffic-changing extensions
Temporarily turn off extensions that alter traffic, authentication, privacy filtering, content blocking, or proxy behavior. Test after each change so you know which extension, if any, affects the result. Restore extensions that are not involved; do not leave security or accessibility tools disabled unnecessarily.
Use a controlled troubleshooting record
Changing several settings at once makes the error harder to diagnose. Keep a short record containing:
Recommended Free Tools
- The exact affected URL and the time of each test.
- Whether another HTTPS site loaded in the same session.
- Whether disabling Experimental QUIC protocol changed the result.
- Whether the URL worked on a phone hotspot or another approved network.
- Whether a VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus inspection layer, or enterprise gateway was active.
- The Edge version and Windows edition.
- Any policy or registry change, including when it was applied and whether Edge was restarted.
This record prevents repeated tests and gives an administrator enough context to distinguish a browser preference from a network or destination problem. Avoid sending passwords, cookies, authentication tokens, or unrelated private browsing data with the report.
When to escalate and what to provide
Contact your organization’s IT team, network administrator, ISP, or the affected website’s support channel when the controlled tests do not identify a safe local fix. Give them the URL, the Edge version, the Windows environment, the result of disabling QUIC, the result on another network, and the security or VPN products in the connection path. State whether the failure affects one site or many.
For an enterprise administrator, the key questions are whether QUIC is intentionally blocked, whether the gateway or inspection service supports HTTP/3 over UDP, and whether QuicAllowed is being enforced. For an ISP or site operator, the useful comparison is whether the same URL succeeds from another network and whether Edge succeeds when QUIC is disabled. These facts are more actionable than simply reporting that “Edge is broken.”
After the issue is resolved, undo temporary tests: re-enable the QUIC flag if you do not need it disabled, reconnect an approved VPN, restore normal proxy settings, and re-enable any security inspection that was paused. Keep a policy-based block only when it is an intentional, documented requirement.
