How to Fix ERR_BLOCKED_BY_ORB in Puppeteer

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ERR_BLOCKED_BY_ORB is a Chromium network-security block, not a Puppeteer-specific error. Find the exact request that failed, then check its request mode and the response’s status, headers, redirects, and body. A common lead is a server, CDN, or proxy returning the wrong content type or an unexpected HTML page where the browser expected another resource. Fix the response or request configuration; changing Puppeteer launch flags is not an established general fix.

What ERR_BLOCKED_BY_ORB means

ORB means Opaque Response Blocking. It is a Chromium protection that examines certain cross-origin requests made in no-cors mode and blocks responses when there is evidence that the response does not match the kind of resource being requested. The protection is part of the browser’s handling of cross-origin data; Puppeteer controls Chromium and reports its behavior rather than creating this particular policy.

As Chromium’s ORB documentation puts it, “A ‘correct’ MIME type is good enough evidence.” The response’s Content-Type therefore matters: it should describe the bytes actually returned. A URL ending in .png, for example, does not ensure that the server returned a PNG. A login page, error document, redirect destination, or proxy response may instead be HTML.

The exact cause cannot be inferred from the error text alone. You need the failed request’s mode and destination, its initiating origin, the final response status and headers, the response body, and the Chrome or Chromium build. Treat a surprising body or MIME type as a diagnostic lead to verify, not as a universal ORB signature.

Do not confuse it with ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT

ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT is a different network error. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting documentation discusses it in connection with Chrome’s HTTPS-first warning flow. Do not apply advice for one error to the other: first confirm the exact error string and the failing request.

Find the specific request and response

Start with the URL that failed, not the page URL or the first visible symptom. A page can load successfully while one image, media file, script, or other subresource is blocked. Record whether the failure is a navigation or subresource request, which page origin initiated it, and whether the request is no-cors. Then inspect what the server actually returned.

Inspect in Chrome DevTools

  1. Reproduce the page in the same Chrome or Chromium build used by Puppeteer, if possible.
  2. Open DevTools and select the Network panel. Enable Preserve log, reload the page, and locate the request associated with ERR_BLOCKED_BY_ORB.
  3. Record the full request URL, request type, initiator, status, redirect chain, and request mode when available. Open the request’s headers and response panels.
  4. Check the response’s Content-Type, X-Content-Type-Options, and body. Determine whether the body is the intended resource or an HTML login page, error page, challenge page, or other unexpected content.

If the block occurs only in Puppeteer, repeat the comparison with the same executable and browser build. Different browser builds, profiles, cookies, proxy settings, and authentication state can lead to different responses, so a comparison is meaningful only when those conditions are accounted for.

Capture the request in Puppeteer

Puppeteer request and response events help identify the URL and response metadata. The response body may not be available for every request or after every failure, so use DevTools or a separate request capture when the event data is incomplete.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  page.on('request', request => {
    console.log('REQUEST', {
      url: request.url(),
      method: request.method(),
      resourceType: request.resourceType(),
      isNavigationRequest: request.isNavigationRequest(),
      headers: request.headers()
    });
  });

  page.on('response', async response => {
    const request = response.request();
    console.log('RESPONSE', {
      url: response.url(),
      status: response.status(),
      headers: response.headers(),
      resourceType: request.resourceType()
    });
  });

  page.on('requestfailed', request => {
    console.error('REQUEST FAILED', {
      url: request.url(),
      error: request.failure()?.errorText,
      resourceType: request.resourceType(),
      headers: request.headers()
    });
  });

  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
  await browser.close();
})();

Replace https://example.com with the page that reproduces the problem. The event output does not necessarily expose the browser’s internal request mode or a blocked response body. Use it to isolate the URL and correlate events with DevTools; do not treat missing body data as proof of what the server sent.

Fix the cause that the evidence points to

Correct a wrong Content-Type

If the response bytes are an image but the server, CDN, or proxy labels them text/html, correct the response at the layer that supplies it so the Content-Type matches the actual bytes. Chromium developer guidance specifically identifies an actual image mislabeled text/html with X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff as a case to investigate, and recommends asking the site to correct its content type.

Do not change a MIME header merely to make the error disappear. Confirm the format of the body first; labeling HTML as an image, or vice versa, creates a misleading response and can break other clients. If the URL is served through a CDN or reverse proxy, inspect its response as well as the origin’s—the browser sees the response delivered to it, not necessarily the origin’s intended one.

Fix unexpected redirects, login pages, or error bodies

If the body is HTML when the request was supposed to return another resource, find out why. Check whether the request was redirected to a sign-in page, whether the resource requires a session cookie or authorization, and whether a gateway or proxy returned an error document. Correct the access or routing problem so the request receives its intended resource. A URL that looks like an asset URL is not evidence that the response is an asset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the full redirect chain and final status. A redirect can move a request to another origin or to an endpoint with different authentication and response behavior. Fix the redirect or access configuration where it is wrong rather than trying to make Puppeteer ignore the final response.

Use CORS when page JavaScript must read a cross-origin response

If page JavaScript needs to read the response data cross-origin, use an appropriate CORS-enabled request and configure the resource server to return a suitable Access-Control-Allow-Origin policy. A no-cors request is not a way to make a cross-origin response readable to page JavaScript. Confirm the intended request mode, origin, credentials, and server policy for the application; CORS is not a blanket fix for every ORB block.

  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

If the response looks correct

If the request mode, response type, status, headers, and body all appear appropriate, save the relevant request and response details and verify the behavior on the current browser build you intend to use. Chromium developer guidance recommends filing a Chromium issue when a block appears incorrect and including the headers and body. A reproducible case with the exact browser version and request details is more useful than reporting only the error string.

Check Puppeteer and its browser without treating upgrades as a fix

Puppeteer normally downloads a particular Chrome version so its API can work with that browser. Its configuration also allows an alternate executable path. Record both the installed Puppeteer version and the actual browser executable and version; otherwise, a local Chrome test may not match the browser that Puppeteer launched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing Puppeteer versions or adding launch flags is not established in the reviewed Puppeteer documentation as a remedy for ORB. Version checks help make a reproduction comparable; they do not correct a bad response or prove that the browser is at fault.

Keep browser installation problems separate from request blocks. Puppeteer’s installation troubleshooting notes that package managers can block install scripts and documents npx puppeteer browsers install for installing the expected browser. That command addresses a missing browser installation, not an ORB response block.

Avoid security-disabling workarounds

Do not disable browser security as the general solution. ORB exists to protect cross-origin data, and disabling protections can conceal a broken response while weakening the test environment. A diagnostic toggle in a controlled experiment is not a production fix.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Chromium developer guidance documents a CORB-disable flag for confirming CORB behavior. CORB is related background, but that flag is not an ORB fix. Do not copy an old CORB diagnostic command into a Puppeteer launch configuration and assume it resolves this error.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to obtain a website screenshot rather than debug a particular Chromium response, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It returns an image or PDF through an API request, so you do not need to launch and configure a local Puppeteer browser for that capture. It does not repair the source site’s response or change how Puppeteer handles ORB.

For a WebP screenshot, replace the URL with the page you want to capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • You have only the error string: Capture the exact failed URL and request type, then inspect its response status, headers, redirects, and body.
  • The response says text/html but should be an image or other resource: Check whether the server returned a login or error document, then verify the MIME type against the actual response bytes.
  • The URL works in a browser tab but not as an embedded resource: Compare the request context, origin, mode, cookies, and redirect chain. A top-level navigation is not necessarily equivalent to a cross-origin subresource request.
  • The page needs JavaScript to read cross-origin data: Use a suitable CORS request and server policy rather than expecting a no-cors response to be readable.
  • The error appears only in automation: Verify the exact Puppeteer version, browser executable and version, profile state, and network/proxy conditions before comparing results.
  • Puppeteer cannot find its browser: Resolve the installation issue separately; the documented browser-install command does not fix ORB.
  • Headers and body appear correct but the block persists: Preserve the reproduction and relevant response details, then check whether it occurs in the intended current Chromium build.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ERR_BLOCKED_BY_ORB mean Puppeteer is broken?

No. It is a Chromium network-security error surfaced by Puppeteer. The failed request and its response determine what to investigate.

Is ERR_BLOCKED_BY_ORB the same as ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT?

No. They are distinct errors with different diagnosis paths; confirm the exact message before applying troubleshooting steps.

Can ScreenshotNeo fix an ORB block in Puppeteer?

No. It can provide a screenshot through its API without your local Puppeteer browser setup, but it does not correct the source response or change Chromium’s ORB behavior.
