How to Fix “Envvar Not Found” Errors in Shells, Apps, Docker, CI, Apache, and .NET

An “envvar not found” error means the process that failed cannot read the environment variable name it expects. Copy the name exactly, check whether it is absent or merely empty, define it in the same context that launches the program, restart that program, and verify presence without printing any secret value. A variable defined in one terminal is not automatically available to an already-running app, a service account, a container, or a different CI step.

The sections below show the manual fix for common shells, Windows launchers, .env files, Docker, GitHub Actions, Apache HTTP Server, and .NET applications, followed by ways to prevent the error from returning.

What “envvar not found” actually means

Environment variables are name-value pairs supplied to a process when it starts. A program asks for a specific name such as API_KEY, DATABASE_URL, or NODE_ENV. If that name is not present in the process environment, the lookup returns no value and the program may stop with an envvar-not-found message. Microsoft’s .NET documentation describes Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable as returning the variable’s value, or null when the variable is not found.

The error identifies the runtime context that is missing the variable; it does not necessarily mean the variable is missing everywhere on the computer. A variable can exist in your interactive shell while being absent from a graphical app, Windows service, scheduled task, Docker container, Apache worker, or CI job. Environment values are inherited when a child process starts, so changing a parent shell later cannot alter a process that is already running.

Absent and empty are different states

An absent variable has no entry at all. An empty variable has an entry whose value is an empty string. Some applications accept an empty value, while others treat it as invalid and report the same error used for an absent value. Test both states before changing configuration. Never paste a secret into a diagnostic command or build log.

Names are exact

Compare the name character by character. Differences in capitalization, underscores, hyphens, punctuation, or a trailing space create a different variable. For example, API_KEY, Api_Key, and API-KEY are not interchangeable in many tools and operating systems.

First-response checklist

  1. Copy the requested name. Use the spelling shown in the error, application documentation, launcher, service definition, workflow, or configuration file.
  2. Inspect the runtime context. Check the same shell, user account, container, service, or workflow step that starts the failing process.
  3. Check presence without exposing the value. Print a boolean, length, or status message instead of the value itself.
  4. Define the variable before launch. A setting added after the app starts will not reach that existing process.
  5. Restart the dependent process. Restart the app, worker, shell, container, or service after changing its environment.
  6. Validate configuration syntax. Use the launcher’s dry-run or config-test command before a production restart.
  7. Check scope and permissions. A user-level setting may not be visible to a service account, and a CI secret may be restricted to selected jobs or environments.

Set the variable in the shell that launches the program

Bash, sh, and zsh

For a POSIX-compatible shell, export the variable before starting the application:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
export API_KEY='replace-with-the-value'
./my-app

The export keyword makes the name available to child processes. Without it, a shell variable can exist only inside the current shell and will not be inherited by the application.

To check presence without revealing the value:

if [ "${API_KEY+x}" = x ]; then
  echo 'API_KEY is present'
else
  echo 'API_KEY is absent'
fi

if [ -n "${API_KEY:-}" ]; then
  echo 'API_KEY is non-empty'
else
  echo 'API_KEY is empty or absent'
fi

The first test distinguishes an existing entry from an absent one. The second treats an empty value as unusable, which is appropriate when the application requires a real token.

fish

fish uses different syntax. The documented form for exporting a variable is:

set -x API_KEY 'replace-with-the-value'
./my-app

To erase the variable from the current fish session, use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
set -e API_KEY

Run the presence check in that same fish session, then restart the application from it. A value defined in Bash is not automatically defined in fish.

PowerShell

In PowerShell, set a process-scoped value with the $env: prefix:

$env:API_KEY = 'replace-with-the-value'
.my-app.exe

To check only whether the name exists and is non-empty:

if (Test-Path Env:API_KEY) {
    if ([string]::IsNullOrEmpty($env:API_KEY)) {
        'API_KEY is empty'
    } else {
        'API_KEY is present'
    }
} else {
    'API_KEY is absent'
}

PowerShell process variables affect programs launched from that PowerShell window. If you set a user or machine variable through Windows settings, close and reopen the application or terminal that needs it so it receives a fresh environment.

Command Prompt

In cmd.exe, set a value for the current command window:

set API_KEY=replace-with-the-value
my-app.exe

set changes only that window and its child processes. The setx command writes a persistent user or machine setting for future processes, not for the already-open window. After using setx, open a new terminal and restart the application. Avoid placing secrets directly in shell history or scripts that are committed to source control.

Restart and verify the process that failed

After defining a variable, restart every component that must read it. This can include a desktop application, a background worker, a terminal, a container, an Apache process, or a Windows service. Restarting only the shell is insufficient if the app was launched earlier by another mechanism.

When it works in a terminal but not in an app

  • Confirm which account launches the app. A service may run as LocalSystem, a dedicated account, or another user rather than your interactive account.
  • Set the variable in the app’s launch configuration, service definition, IDE run configuration, or scheduled-task action instead of relying on your personal shell profile.
  • Fully quit and relaunch the app. Some graphical programs keep a long-lived helper process that must also be stopped.
  • If the app starts through sudo, a desktop launcher, or a system manager, check that mechanism’s environment rules; it may intentionally discard selected variables.

When it works after opening a new terminal

This usually means the persistent setting is correct but the old terminal inherited an earlier environment. Close the old shell, open a new one, run the presence check there, and then launch the program from that new shell.

Check .env files and application launchers

Many applications load variables from a file named .env, but the file is not an operating-system environment by itself. The application or its framework must explicitly load it. Confirm all of the following:

  • The file is in the directory the application expects, not merely the directory where you ran a command.
  • The variable name exactly matches the name requested by the code.
  • There is no hidden trailing space, smart quote, or accidental punctuation around the name.
  • Values containing spaces, semicolons, or shell metacharacters are quoted according to the loader’s syntax.
  • The file is not excluded by a mode-specific name such as .env.production when the app is running in another mode.
  • The process is actually configured to load the file; launching a binary directly may bypass a framework’s dotenv loader.

After editing, stop and start the application rather than relying on hot reload. Treat .env files containing credentials as secrets: restrict permissions, keep them out of source control, and use a secret store or deployment-level secret mechanism when available.

Docker and Compose

Pass a variable to a one-off container

Supply the value at container creation time:

docker run --rm --env API_KEY='replace-with-the-value' my-image

The variable must be present inside the container, not only in the host shell. To pass the host value through explicitly, use a form such as --env API_KEY after exporting it in the host shell.

Use an environment file

docker run --rm --env-file .env my-image

Verify that the file path is correct relative to the directory where the command runs and that the variable name appears exactly once in the expected format. Do not bake credentials into a Dockerfile layer or commit a secret-bearing environment file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compose services

In a Compose file, define the value under the service that needs it:

services:
  api:
    image: my-image
    environment:
      API_KEY: ${API_KEY}
    # or load names from a file:
    # env_file:
    #   - .env

Compose interpolation occurs on the host while the service environment is assembled for the container. Check both sides: confirm the host variable or interpolation file exists, then inspect the running container’s environment without printing the secret. Recreate or restart the service after changing configuration; editing .env does not alter a container that is already running.

GitHub Actions and other CI workflows

CI systems scope variables to jobs, steps, environments, and runners. A value available in one job is not automatically available in another. Confirm that the variable or secret is attached to the exact job and step that invokes the failing command.

Values for later GitHub Actions steps

GitHub Actions supports writing a variable to the runner’s environment file:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
- name: Set value for later steps
  run: echo "API_BASE=https://example.invalid" >> "$GITHUB_ENV"

- name: Run application
  run: ./my-app

A value written to GITHUB_ENV is available to subsequent steps, not to commands earlier in the same step. For credentials, use the workflow’s secret mechanism and reference the secret in the step that needs it rather than echoing the value. Keep secret values out of command output, debug traces, artifacts, and failure messages.

CI troubleshooting checklist

  • Check the spelling and capitalization used in the workflow, repository or organization variable, and application code.
  • Confirm the secret is available for the selected branch, environment, fork policy, and event type.
  • Make sure the step that exports the variable runs before the step that consumes it.
  • Remember that each job normally runs in a separate environment; repeat the setup in every job that needs the value.
  • Use a masked presence check, such as testing whether a variable is set, rather than printing its contents.

Apache HTTP Server configuration

Apache supports ${ENVVAR} substitution in configuration. Apache’s documentation states that when the variable is not found, the characters ${ENVVAR} are left unchanged for later stages of configuration processing. That behavior can produce a confusing downstream error: the configuration may parse while a later directive receives a literal unresolved string.

Define or pass the variable deliberately

Depending on how Apache is launched, a value can come from the service environment or from Apache’s environment directives. For example, a deployment may use an EnvironmentFile in its service manager, or an Apache configuration can use directives such as SetEnv where appropriate. Ensure the variable is available to the Apache parent process before workers are created; setting it in an unrelated interactive shell does not change an already-running server.

Keep secrets out of publicly served files and avoid placing them in error responses. Restrict configuration-file permissions and prefer the secret-handling facilities provided by the operating system or deployment platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test before restarting

After editing Apache configuration, run its syntax check:

apachectl configtest

On installations that use the short form, the equivalent command is:

apachectl -t

Fix every reported error before restarting or reloading Apache. If the test succeeds but the application still reports a missing variable, inspect the service account and the environment inherited by the Apache parent process, then restart the service so new workers receive the corrected value.

.NET applications: distinguish missing, empty, and invalid

In .NET, Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable returns null when the variable is missing. Environment.SetEnvironmentVariable creates a missing variable when a non-null value is supplied and updates an existing one. A robust application should validate the value at startup and produce an actionable message naming the required variable without including its secret.

using System;

string? apiKey = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("API_KEY");

if (apiKey is null)
{
    throw new InvalidOperationException(
        "Required environment variable API_KEY is not set.");
}

if (apiKey.Length == 0)
{
    throw new InvalidOperationException(
        "Required environment variable API_KEY is empty.");
}

Do not log apiKey, interpolate it into exception text, or include it in build output. If an application intentionally sets a process variable, do so before creating the dependent client or worker, and remember that changing the value in one process does not modify a separately running process.

Choose the right configuration route

When several ways exist to provide the same variable, compare their scope, lifetime, security, and verification options:

Route Scope Lifetime Security considerations Verification
Current shell export or assignment Shell and child processes Until the shell closes May appear in history or process diagnostics Shell presence test, then launch command
User or machine setting Future processes for that account or computer Persistent until changed Accessible to processes with the relevant account scope Open a new shell or app and test there
Service definition That service and its workers Until the definition changes Protect service files and deployment permissions Service manager status plus application startup check
Docker --env, --env-file, or Compose Selected container Container lifetime or recreated configuration Do not commit secret files or image layers Container inspection that reports presence only
CI variable or secret Configured job, step, environment, or runner Workflow run or configured retention Use secret storage and masking Workflow step that checks presence without echoing value

Prefer the narrowest scope that meets the application’s needs. A temporary shell export is convenient for local testing; a service or deployment-level secret is more reliable for unattended production processes.

Common failure patterns and targeted fixes

The spelling looks right but the error remains

Compare the name in every layer: source code, launcher, environment file, service definition, container configuration, and CI settings. Look for a singular-versus-plural difference, a changed prefix, a hyphen instead of an underscore, or a trailing space. If the application normalizes names, confirm that behavior in its documentation rather than assuming the operating system does it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The variable is present but rejected

Check whether the value is empty, contains unintended quote characters, includes a newline, or uses the wrong format. A URL may require a scheme, a port may need digits only, and a path may need escaping. Validate format separately from presence so the startup error tells you which condition failed.

The service still sees the old value

Restart the service, not just your terminal. Long-running supervisors and worker pools inherit the environment only when their parent process starts. If a supervisor launches children, restart or reload the supervisor according to its documented procedure, then confirm that new workers have replaced old ones.

Only one machine or runner fails

Compare account, operating-system edition, shell, working directory, container image, and CI runner labels. Configuration files may exist on one machine but not another, and a secret may be scoped to a particular environment. Add a safe startup diagnostic that reports the variable name, source, and presence state without revealing the value.

Changing the value appears to do nothing

Look for a second configuration source that overrides the first: command-line arguments, a service file, a Compose interpolation value, an IDE profile, or a framework-specific settings file. Document the precedence order and remove stale duplicate definitions. Then recreate the process so it reads the final value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent the error from returning

  • Document every required variable, its expected format, scope, and owner.
  • Validate required names at startup and fail before opening connections or serving requests.
  • Report whether each value is absent, empty, or malformed, but never print secret contents.
  • Keep a checked-in example file such as .env.example containing names and safe placeholders, not real credentials.
  • Use CI checks that verify required secrets are attached to every job and environment that needs them.
  • Use configuration-test commands such as apachectl -t before deploying server changes.
  • Restart or recreate processes as part of deployment whenever environment configuration changes.
  • Review permissions and rotation procedures for secret-bearing files and service definitions.

If the error began after a rename, deployment change, shell migration, container rebuild, or service-account change, compare the old and new launch contexts first. Most envvar-not-found incidents are fixed by correcting the exact name, supplying it in the correct scope, and starting a fresh process.
