A box, a box with a question mark, a diagonal box, or an empty space where an emoji should be is usually an unsupported-character glyph, often called “tofu.” Your message may still contain the original emoji; the Android app or selected font simply cannot draw that character or sequence. First check whether the problem occurs in one app or across the phone. Then update the affected app or device, remove any custom font, and treat very new or multi-part emoji as a compatibility issue rather than a keyboard problem.
What the box or question mark means
Text is stored as character data and rendered later by a font. When the selected font has no glyph for a character, the renderer substitutes a missing-glyph symbol. That symbol may look like an outlined square, a square containing a question mark, a diamond, a diagonal box, or a blank gap. Unicode documentation describes this as a tofu glyph.

The replacement does not necessarily mean that the sender sent a box. The original code points can remain in the message, post, or document even though your device cannot display them. A recipient with a newer font, a different app, or a different operating system may see the intended emoji.
Emoji support is more complicated than a single picture. A recently released emoji can require a newer emoji font, while a family, flag, profession, gender, skin-tone, or gender-inclusive emoji can be a sequence of several code points joined by invisible characters. An app may support the individual symbols but not the complete sequence. Variation selectors can also change whether a symbol is rendered as text or emoji.

Identify which troubleshooting branch applies
| What you see | Most likely scope | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Boxes appear in one app but not elsewhere | That app’s font, fallback, or emoji library | Update the app, test the same emoji in another app, then report the example and app version to its developer. |
| Boxes appear in messaging, browser, social, and other apps | System font, device software, or a custom font | Check the Android version, install available device updates, and restore the default font. |
| Only one brand-new emoji or a complex sequence fails | Character or sequence support is newer than the app or font | Try an older, widely supported emoji and check for updates on both the sending and receiving sides. |
| The issue started immediately after flashing or setting up a device or emulator | Startup font-cache setup | Allow setup to finish; use the limited Google Play services cache procedure only when that situation matches. |
Send the same emoji to a notes app, a browser text field, and a second messaging app. If it renders in those places, the first app is the useful suspect. If every app shows the substitute glyph, continue with device-level checks.
Fix emoji missing in only one Android app
1. Update the app and retest
- Open Google Play Store and search for the affected app.
- Tap Update if an update is offered. If the button says Open, the installed release may already be current.
- Close and reopen the app, then test the exact emoji again. A force-stop can help an app reload its font resources, but it cannot add support that the app does not contain.
An app can choose its own typeface, text renderer, or fallback order instead of using the complete system behavior. It can therefore show a box while another app on the same phone displays the emoji correctly. An app update is the appropriate remedy because the developer may need to add a newer font, update its rendering library, or handle a multi-code-point sequence.
2. Record a reproducible example for the developer
If the updated app still fails, report the app version, Android version, phone model, and the exact emoji or sequence. Explain whether the sender and recipient see different results and whether the same character works in another app. A screenshot is useful, but include the original copied character when possible; a screenshot alone does not reveal which code points the app received.

Do not assume that reinstalling, changing the keyboard, or clearing all phone data will add missing glyphs. Those actions may remove local data without changing the app’s supported character set.

Fix emoji missing in many apps
1. Check Android version and device updates
- Open Settings and look for About phone, About device, or Android version. The exact label varies by manufacturer.
- Note the Android version and security-update status.
- Open Settings → System → Software update, or the manufacturer’s equivalent, and install an offered update over a reliable connection.
- Restart the phone after the update and test the same emoji in several apps.
On Android 11 and earlier, device-installed emoji fonts cannot be updated at the system level independently of the operating-system image. The phone maker must deliver the newer font through a system update, and update availability depends on the manufacturer, model, region, carrier, and support period. If no update is offered, the device may simply lack system-level support for that emoji.
Android 12 introduced a font-management service that can manage and update device-installed font files without requiring a complete system update. That does not guarantee that every phone receives every font immediately: the manufacturer’s software, update channel, and the app’s own renderer still matter.
2. Return from a custom font to the default
Theme stores, accessibility tools, launchers, and manufacturer settings can replace the default typeface. A custom font may omit emoji glyphs or interfere with fallback to the emoji font.

- Disable a font package or theme that changes text appearance, then restart the affected app.
Menu names differ widely, so use the manufacturer’s support instructions if the search does not reveal the setting. Returning to the default is a diagnostic step, not a promise that every custom font is defective. If the emoji works again, the custom font is missing glyphs or has incompatible fallback behavior.

3. Distinguish a phone problem from a sender or recipient problem
Compare a newly typed emoji with one copied from the message that displays a box. If a new, common emoji renders but a received one does not, the received character may be a newer release or a sequence your app does not support. Ask the sender which app and device they used, and test the message in another current app. Rendering requires support on the device and in the app that displays the text; a keyboard can insert a character but cannot force the receiving renderer to draw it.
Android-version differences that determine the remedy
| Platform | What can update the emoji font | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Android 11 and earlier | The OEM system-update process supplies updated device-installed fonts. The operating system cannot independently refresh the system emoji font. | Install every available manufacturer update. For newer characters, use an app that bundles compatible emoji support; otherwise wait for an OEM update or use a supported alternative character. |
| Android 12 and later | The FontManager architecture can manage device-installed font files without a full system update, subject to the manufacturer and update channel. | Install system and app updates. If only one app fails, the app may still need its own library or fallback fix. |
| Any Android version with a modern app renderer | An app can provide backward-compatible emoji support through Emoji2/AppCompat and a compatible downloadable-font provider. | Keep the app current. A newer app can display emoji that the old system font cannot, but only inside that app. |
Android Developers documents Emoji2 as the backward-compatibility approach for lower Android releases. Emoji2 is also a dependency of AppCompat, and compatible downloadable-font providers, including services delivered through Google Play services, can supply newer font data to an app. This is why two apps on one old phone can have different emoji coverage.
When the emoji itself is too new or too complex
Recently released emoji
Emoji are added in Unicode releases, but the release date is not the date every Android phone receives the corresponding font. A phone can display older emoji while showing a box for a character introduced later. Historically, Google reported in an April 8, 2022 explainer that 96% of Android users could not see emoji released in the year they debuted. That figure describes the situation reported at that time, not a current adoption rate.

Sequences, skin tones, flags, and joined emoji
A displayed emoji can be assembled from multiple code points. Examples include a person plus a skin-tone modifier, a profession joined with a gender sign, a flag made from regional indicators, and family combinations joined by zero-width joiners. Support for one component does not prove support for the whole sequence.
- Test the base emoji and the complete sequence separately.
- Try the same sequence in another current app.
- Install updates on both the sender’s and recipient’s devices when possible.
- If the sequence remains unsupported, choose a simpler, broadly supported form rather than repeatedly resending the same failing characters.
The visible result can also vary by font design. Different vendors may draw the same Unicode emoji differently while still supporting the character. A change in appearance is normal; a tofu box indicates that the renderer lacks a usable glyph or sequence implementation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the Google Play services cache step only in its documented case
Android Developers mentions clearing Google Play services cache for a recently flashed device or a new emulator when startup font caching leaves emoji as tofu. This is a narrow recovery step, not a general solution for every Android phone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the device was recently flashed, freshly created as an emulator, or has just completed initial setup.
- Finish pending system and Google Play services setup and restart once.
- If the tofu remains and the situation matches the documented startup-cache case, open Settings → Apps → Google Play services → Storage & cache. Manufacturer labels may differ.
- Tap Clear cache, not Clear storage or Clear data, then restart and test again.
Clearing cache does not install a missing emoji font. On an ordinary, long-used consumer phone with one unsupported new emoji, this step is unlikely to help and should not replace app or system updates. Avoid clearing Play services storage unless a specific support procedure tells you to; doing so can require reauthentication or restore setup.

Why changing the keyboard usually does not fix received emoji
The keyboard controls character entry. The app that displays a conversation, web page, or document chooses the font and fallback path used for rendering. Installing a different keyboard may offer a newer emoji picker or insert a sequence more reliably, but it cannot make an old receiving app draw a glyph it does not support.
Use a keyboard change only when the problem is at entry—for example, an emoji is absent from the picker or the keyboard inserts the wrong sequence. For boxes in received text, follow the app, font, and Android-version branches above.
What app support is expected to provide
Google Play’s Android Emoji policy says apps running on Android 12 and later must support the latest Unicode Emoji. Apps that use custom emoji implementations, including third-party libraries, have a four-month window after new emoji are released to fully support the latest Unicode version. The policy applies to app behavior and release obligations; it does not instantly upgrade an older phone’s system font.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn app can meet the practical requirement by using the platform renderer, Emoji2/AppCompat, or another compatible implementation and font provider. If an app fails while other apps work, its implementation or update status is the strongest lead. Include the failing sequence and app version in a support report so the developer can reproduce the exact code points.
Common dead ends and safer alternatives
| Attempt | Why it often fails | Use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Changing the keyboard for a display problem | Keyboard entry and message rendering are separate. | Update the displaying app and test its fallback behavior in another app. |
| Clearing every app’s data | It can erase drafts, logins, and local content without adding font support. | Start with an app update, then clear only a relevant cache if support documentation calls for it. |
| Installing a random font package | The package may omit emoji, conflict with fallback, or create security and compatibility risks. | Use the manufacturer’s default font while diagnosing and rely on official system or app updates. |
| Factory-resetting the phone | A reset does not create a newer system font or make an app support a sequence. | Identify whether the failure is app-specific, system-wide, or limited to a new character first. |
| Assuming the sender damaged the message | The original character data may be intact; only the recipient’s renderer lacks a glyph. | Copy the character, test another app, and compare Android and app versions. |
When to contact the app or device maker
Contact the app developer when
- The same emoji works in other apps on the same phone.
- The app is current but fails on a supported Android release.
- Only a particular family, flag, skin-tone, or joined sequence fails.
- The failure began after an app update or persists after reinstalling without data loss.
Provide the app name and version, Android version, device model, language or region settings if relevant, the exact copied emoji sequence, and a screenshot showing the box. State where the sequence does render successfully.
Contact the device maker or carrier when
- Many unrelated apps show boxes, including system text fields.
- The phone is on Android 11 or earlier and has no available software update.
- The default font was restored but system-wide rendering is still broken.
- Emoji disappeared immediately after a system update or a failed setup.
Ask whether the model and region have received the relevant emoji-font or system update. Support availability can differ even between closely related models, so include the exact model number and software build.
A concise decision checklist
- Test the same emoji in at least two other apps.
- If one app fails, update it and report the exact sequence if the problem remains.
- If many apps fail, check Android version, install available device updates, and restart.
- Disable a custom font or theme and retest with the default font.
- If the character is new or a complex sequence, test a simpler supported emoji and update both ends of the conversation.
- Use the Google Play services cache step only for a recently flashed device or new emulator with a documented startup-cache problem.
- Do not expect a keyboard change, factory reset, or random font package to supply missing rendering support.
What a successful fix looks like
A successful fix is not necessarily a different emoji design. Vendors are free to draw supported emoji in different styles. The practical test is that the intended character or sequence appears consistently in the affected app, without a tofu box, after reopening the app and sending or receiving a fresh test message. If only a particular new sequence remains boxed while common emoji work, the result is a compatibility limit, not evidence that your entire phone is damaged.
