How to Fix Email Not Arriving Through a SimpleLogin Alias

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an email sent to a SimpleLogin alias never appears, first verify the alias’s assigned mailbox and its verification status. Then search that mailbox’s inbox, spam and junk folders, and check SimpleLogin for a delivery-failure notification. A message sent from the destination mailbox to its own alias is intentionally dropped, while sender authentication failures or extra forwarding services can stop delivery before it reaches the inbox.

The sequence below separates an alias configuration problem from a mailbox filtering problem, a deliberate self-alias drop, a sender-side DMARC failure and a broken forwarding chain.

Understand what must happen for an alias message to arrive

A SimpleLogin alias is a forwarding address. SimpleLogin receives mail addressed to the alias and forwards it to one or more mailboxes assigned to that alias. The alias itself is not an independent inbox that you open and search. The message should appear in each active, verified destination mailbox unless a filtering, authentication or forwarding rule prevents delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction gives you useful checkpoints:

  • Alias routing: Is the alias enabled, and is the expected mailbox assigned to it?
  • Mailbox readiness: Has the destination mailbox been verified and kept active?
  • Destination filtering: Did the mailbox provider place the message in spam, junk, quarantine or an archive folder?
  • SimpleLogin delivery: Did SimpleLogin report that it could not deliver the message?
  • Message policy: Was the message quarantined because the sender failed an authenticity check?
  • Test conditions: Was the message sent from the same mailbox assigned to the alias?
  • Forwarding path: Is another forwarding service rewriting headers or changing the authentication context?

Work through the checks in that order. Do not change several settings at once; each result tells you which part of the path failed.

Start with the alias and mailbox assignment

Open the alias settings

  1. Sign in to the SimpleLogin dashboard.
  2. Open the alias that is missing mail.
  3. Confirm that the alias is enabled and that its destination list contains the mailbox you expect.
  4. Check the spelling of the mailbox address and make sure it is not an old address you no longer monitor.

An alias can be assigned to multiple mailboxes. If more than one destination is listed, check every one before concluding that SimpleLogin did not receive the message. The dashboard also lets you change an existing alias’s mailbox assignment, so an address can continue working while pointing somewhere different from the mailbox you remember.

Confirm that the mailbox is verified

A newly added mailbox cannot be used until its verification email is confirmed. Look for that verification message in the mailbox’s inbox, spam and junk folders. If the message is still missing, contact SimpleLogin support; an unverified mailbox will not serve as a usable destination even though it may appear in your account settings.

Do not assume that adding a mailbox automatically makes it active. Verification is a separate step, and the destination provider may have filtered the verification email before you ever receive it.

Check whether the problem affects one alias or several

Send a controlled test to another enabled alias that points to the same mailbox. If the second alias delivers normally, focus on the first alias’s assignment, status or sender-specific behavior. If neither alias delivers, concentrate on the mailbox, its filters or the forwarding path rather than repeatedly editing the alias.

Search every destination-mailbox folder

Use the mailbox provider’s search function for the sender, subject and approximate delivery time. Check more than the primary inbox:

  • Spam or junk
  • Quarantine or suspected-phishing folders
  • Archive and “All Mail” views
  • Trash, if an automatic rule may have deleted the message
  • Custom folders created by filters

Review mailbox rules, blocked-sender lists, category tabs and automatic forwarding or archival rules. A rule can make a successful SimpleLogin delivery look like a missing message by moving it immediately.

Also search for SimpleLogin’s own service messages. Its documentation warns that service emails can be incorrectly classified as spam and recommends allowing messages from simplelogin.io or simplelogin.co when that happens. This guidance applies to SimpleLogin notifications and account emails; it does not mean every message forwarded through an alias will show one of those domains as its sender.

If the mailbox is managed by an organization, an administrator may have placed the message in a server-side quarantine that is not visible in the normal webmail interface. Ask the administrator to search using the alias recipient, sender and delivery time.

Use SimpleLogin’s delivery notification to recover a failed message

When SimpleLogin receives a message but cannot deliver it to the destination mailbox, its troubleshooting documentation says it creates a notification and sends an email about the failure. This is the most useful distinction in the investigation: a notification indicates that alias processing reached the delivery stage, while no notification leaves alias routing, sender policy and mailbox filtering as competing explanations.

Find and open the notification

  1. Search the destination mailbox and the account email address for “SimpleLogin,” “delivery,” “failed” and the alias name.
  2. Check spam, junk and quarantine folders for the notification itself.
  3. Open the notification and read the stated delivery error, including the destination address and time.
  4. Use its download option to retrieve the undelivered email.

The download option preserves access to the message while you correct the destination problem. Save the file if you need to provide it to support or inspect its headers later. A downloaded message does not prove that the mailbox provider would have accepted it; it confirms that SimpleLogin retained the undelivered message and exposed it through the notification.

What the notification tells you

Observation Most likely location of the problem Next action
A SimpleLogin delivery-failure notification is present The destination mailbox rejected or could not accept the message Read the error, verify the mailbox address and status, then correct mailbox restrictions or contact support
No notification, but the message is in spam, quarantine or an archive Mailbox filtering or an automatic rule Release the message and adjust the relevant rule
No notification and no message in any folder Alias assignment, sender policy, self-alias behavior or an intervening forwarder Continue with the sender and forwarding checks below
The notification itself is missing The mailbox filtered SimpleLogin’s service email, or the account contact address is not the one being checked Search all folders, allow SimpleLogin service domains and verify the account email

Rule out a message sent from the mailbox to its own alias

SimpleLogin deliberately drops a message when it is sent from a mailbox to an alias that forwards back to that same mailbox. Its official troubleshooting wording is: “Please note that an email sent from a mailbox to its own alias isn’t delivered: the email is just dropped by SimpleLogin.” The purpose is to prevent a forwarding loop and protect the reverse-alias system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if [email protected] is assigned as the destination mailbox for [email protected], a message sent from [email protected] to that alias is not a valid delivery test. It is expected to disappear without arriving in the sender’s Sent or Inbox as a forwarded copy.

Run a valid test

  1. Choose a sender that is not the destination mailbox, such as a separate personal or work mailbox.
  2. Send a new message to the SimpleLogin alias.
  3. Wait for normal mailbox processing, then search the destination mailbox and SimpleLogin notifications.
  4. If the external-sender test works, the original result was the intentional self-alias drop.

Do not ask SimpleLogin to disable this safeguard. The correct fix is to test from another sender or use a different destination arrangement for internal mail.

Investigate sender authentication and DMARC quarantine

SimpleLogin documents a sender-authenticity check based on DMARC. DMARC uses the sender domain’s SPF and DKIM results, together with alignment rules, to indicate whether the message is authorized. If a message fails the check, SimpleLogin may quarantine it according to the policy published by the sender’s domain.

Signs that sender authentication is involved

  • Messages from one sender fail while messages from other senders arrive.
  • The sender uses a custom domain, a bulk-mail system or a newly changed mail service.
  • SimpleLogin displays a quarantine or authenticity notice rather than an ordinary mailbox-delivery error.
  • The sender reports that the message was accepted by its own system but cannot show a successful destination delivery.

Look for a SimpleLogin notification or quarantine control associated with the message. If SimpleLogin provides an option to release or review it, follow that option cautiously and confirm that the sender is legitimate.

What the sender must fix

A recipient cannot repair another domain’s SPF, DKIM or DMARC records. Ask the sender or the administrator of the sending domain to check that:

  • The domain publishes the intended SPF record for the service that actually sent the message.
  • The sending system signs messages with DKIM and publishes the matching public key.
  • The visible From domain aligns with the authenticated SPF or DKIM domain as required by DMARC.
  • Recent changes to providers, subdomains or bulk-mail platforms have not left an outdated authentication record in DNS.

Do not tell the sender to weaken DMARC merely to reach one alias. The proper remedy is an accurate authentication configuration. Once the sender corrects it, send a fresh test rather than relying on a previously quarantined message.

Remove conventional forwarding from the path

SimpleLogin warns against using a forwarding address as a SimpleLogin mailbox and against automatically forwarding an old mailbox into a SimpleLogin alias. Conventional forwarding can rewrite headers or alter the authentication context. Combining that behavior with alias forwarding creates a chain in which a message may pass one service but fail the next service’s authenticity or loop checks.

Identify a forwarding chain

Map the actual route, from the sender to the final inbox. Include old addresses, catch-all rules, group addresses, corporate gateways and any third-party forwarding service. A route such as “sender → old mailbox → SimpleLogin alias → final mailbox” is harder to diagnose than a direct route from the sender to the alias.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer a direct destination

  1. In the SimpleLogin dashboard, use a mailbox that you can open directly and that has completed verification.
  2. Remove an old forwarded address from the alias temporarily, or replace it with the direct mailbox.
  3. Disable automatic forwarding from the old mailbox for the duration of the test.
  4. Send a fresh message from an external sender and check the direct mailbox.
  5. Restore only the forwarding rules that are demonstrably necessary, testing after each change.

A direct, verified destination does not guarantee acceptance by the mailbox provider, but it removes header rewriting and an extra authentication boundary from the investigation.

Separate sender-specific failures from mailbox-wide failures

Use controlled tests instead of guessing. Record the sender, recipient alias, time and result for each test.

Test Result Interpretation
External sender to the affected alias Arrives The alias and destination work; investigate the original sender, its authentication or its message content
External sender to the affected alias Fails with a DMARC or quarantine notice The sending domain needs an authentication review, subject to the sender’s published policy
External sender to a second alias using the same mailbox Arrives The original alias’s assignment or status deserves closer inspection
External sender to multiple aliases using the same mailbox None arrive Focus on mailbox filters, provider rejection, verification or another forwarding layer
Destination mailbox sends to its own alias Nothing arrives Expected self-alias drop; repeat from another mailbox

Keep the message content simple during testing: a unique subject and plain text body make it easier to search and less likely to trigger a content rule. Change only one variable between tests so that a successful result identifies the relevant cause.

Check mailbox-provider restrictions after SimpleLogin succeeds

If SimpleLogin shows that it delivered the message and no quarantine is involved, the remaining failure may be inside the destination provider. Review provider-level limits and security controls, especially when the mailbox is new, full or managed by an organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that the mailbox has available storage.
  • Check whether the provider blocks mail addressed to aliases or unfamiliar recipients.
  • Review blocked senders, allowlists and transport rules.
  • Look for a quarantine portal separate from webmail.
  • Ask an administrator whether an inbound gateway rejected the message before mailbox delivery.

A provider may report a rejection to SimpleLogin, which should produce a delivery notification, but some filtering systems only move or suppress the message locally. That is why folder searches and administrator checks belong alongside the SimpleLogin dashboard.

Escalate with evidence instead of a generic “missing email” report

Contact SimpleLogin support after checking the assignment, verification, folders, notifications, self-alias condition, sender authentication and forwarding path. Include enough detail for support to distinguish an alias-routing issue from a destination rejection.

  • The complete alias address
  • The destination mailbox address and whether it is verified
  • The sender address and approximate send time, including time zone
  • Whether messages from other senders or aliases arrive
  • Whether the sender was the same mailbox assigned to the alias
  • Whether a SimpleLogin delivery or quarantine notification appeared
  • The exact text of any delivery error
  • Whether another forwarding service, old mailbox or organization gateway is involved
  • The downloaded undelivered message, if the notification supplied one and support requests it

Redact passwords, recovery codes and unrelated personal content before sharing an exported message. Preserve the original headers when possible, because changing them can remove information support needs.

The public documentation does not establish a universal, user-facing method for identifying the exact mail-server hop that failed in every case. Support may need the timestamp and message details to investigate further; do not assume that a missing inbox message can always be traced from the recipient side alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent the same failure on future aliases

  • Assign each alias to a mailbox that you can access directly.
  • Complete mailbox verification immediately after adding a destination.
  • Keep SimpleLogin service emails visible by checking spam and allowing simplelogin.io or simplelogin.co when your provider filters them.
  • Avoid forwarding an old mailbox into a SimpleLogin alias unless there is a clear reason and you have tested the full chain.
  • Use an external sender for delivery tests; do not use the destination mailbox to test its own alias.
  • When one sender fails, have that sender’s administrator review SPF, DKIM and DMARC rather than changing unrelated recipient settings.
  • Keep a record of which aliases point to which mailboxes, particularly when an alias has multiple destinations.

These practices reduce the number of possible failure points without bypassing SimpleLogin’s loop protection or the sender’s anti-spoofing policy.

A compact decision path

  1. Is the alias enabled and assigned to the intended, verified mailbox? If not, correct the dashboard settings and complete verification.
  2. Is the message in inbox, spam, junk, quarantine, archive or a custom folder? If yes, release it and adjust the responsible filter.
  3. Did SimpleLogin issue a delivery-failure notification? Open it and download the message while correcting the destination problem.
  4. Was the sender the destination mailbox itself? If yes, the drop is intentional; retest from another sender.
  5. Does only one sender fail, or is there a DMARC/quarantine notice? Ask the sending domain’s administrator to correct SPF, DKIM or DMARC alignment.
  6. Is another forwarding service in the route? Remove the extra hop and test a direct, verified mailbox.
  7. Have all checks passed without delivery? Send support the alias, sender, time, destination, test results and any notification details.
