Windows taskbar buttons represent application windows, not every tab inside a window. Microsoft Edge tabs and File Explorer tabs normally stay inside one window, so there is no standard switch that gives each tab its own taskbar button. The correct fix depends on whether you want tabs in Alt+Tab, separate Edge or Explorer windows on the taskbar, or windows from another virtual desktop to become visible.
Identify the behavior you want

A taskbar button represents a window. A hover preview can show windows belonging to that button, while Alt+Tab can show recent Edge tabs when enabled. A browser or Explorer tab is not automatically an independent Windows window.
Show recent Edge tabs in Alt+Tab
Windows supports recent Microsoft Edge tabs in the task switcher. This changes Alt+Tab and snapping behavior; it does not create additional taskbar buttons.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Multitasking.
- Find Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab.
- Choose N most recent tabs, rather than Don’t show tabs.
- Open several Edge tabs and press Alt+Tab to verify that recent tabs appear.

Put Edge tabs on separate taskbar buttons
Ungrouping cannot split tabs inside one Edge window. To obtain independent taskbar buttons, first make the tabs separate Edge windows.
- Drag a tab out of its current Edge window, or use the tab’s context-menu command for moving it to a new window if that command is available in your Edge release.
- Repeat for each tab that needs an independent button.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Under Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels, choose Never to keep each window separate, or When taskbar is full to separate them while space remains.
Each separate Edge window should now have its own taskbar button. Microsoft describes these options in terms of windows, not tabs, in its taskbar customization guidance. Never uses more space and can make buttons shrink or scroll; When taskbar is full is a compromise.

Make File Explorer windows appear separately
File Explorer tabs work like Edge tabs: several folders can be organized inside one Explorer window, but the taskbar does not normally create one button per tab. If you need independent taskbar switching, use separate Explorer windows.
- Open File Explorer from its taskbar icon, the Start menu, or by pressing Windows key + E.
- Open another Explorer window instead of another tab for each location that needs its own button.
- Set Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels to Never or When taskbar is full using the steps above.
File Explorer’s general opening and navigation options are described by Microsoft at File Explorer in Windows. Separate windows create more window-management overhead, but they are the built-in way to obtain separate taskbar items.

Choose the taskbar grouping behavior
- Always, hide labels: the most compact choice; windows from an application share one button.
- When taskbar is full: windows stay separate until available space runs out, then are grouped.
- Never: every window keeps a separate labeled button, at the cost of taskbar space.
These settings affect windows from Edge, File Explorer, and other applications. They never turn ordinary tabs into windows. Multi-monitor systems may expose additional grouping controls for other displays.
Show windows from every virtual desktop
A window can be open but absent from the current taskbar because Windows is showing only the desktop you are using.

- Open Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Expand Desktops.
- For On the taskbar, show all the open windows, choose On all desktops.
- For Show all open windows when I press Alt+Tab, choose On all desktops if you also want cross-desktop switching in Alt+Tab.
Microsoft documents these virtual-desktop controls at Configure multiple desktops in Windows. Showing windows on every desktop makes them easier to find, but reduces the separation between desktops.

- Confirm whether you have multiple windows or only multiple tabs. Ungrouping helps only with multiple windows.
- Check that the Edge or Explorer window is on the virtual desktop you are viewing, or set the desktop scope to On all desktops.
- Verify the taskbar grouping choice after creating the extra windows.
- Close and reopen the affected application.
- As a general recovery step, restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager. This is not a specific Microsoft fix for exposing tabs, but it can refresh a stale taskbar.
- Install pending Windows and Edge updates. Setting names can differ by Windows edition, build, language, policy, or future interface changes; search Settings for Multitasking if the path is different.
On work or school computers, organizational policy may restrict multitasking options. Multiple monitors can also have their own taskbar behavior settings.

Windows 10 versus Windows 11
These instructions are primarily for Windows 11. Windows 10 may use different labels and layouts, and Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Check the wording shown on your installation rather than assuming every Windows 10 and Windows 11 build is identical.
