Do not start by deleting browser data or switching accounts; a synced deletion can affect every connected device.
The steps below use Microsoft’s current Windows and Edge support paths. Menu names can change slightly with an Edge update, but the profile, sync, repair, and Windows sign-in areas remain the places to check.

First identify which layer is failing
The same symptom—“sync is not working”—can come from different causes. Use the symptom that best matches what you see, then work through the corresponding checks.

|---|---|---|
| Edge opens, but it shows the wrong name or avatar, or asks you to sign in again | Edge profile or account | Open the profile menu and select the intended account; then choose the option to sign in to sync. |
| Edge is signed in, but only some categories appear on another device | Sync controls | Open Settings > Profiles > Sync and check that the missing data type is enabled. |
| Edge crashes, will not open reliably, or its pages and settings behave incorrectly | Edge browser health | Update Edge, then use the Windows Repair command for Microsoft Edge if necessary. |
| You cannot sign in to Windows, Windows loads a temporary profile, or the network is unavailable | Windows sign-in, profile loading, or connectivity | Reconnect, restart, and follow Windows sign-in troubleshooting before changing Edge data. |
| A work or school account is required, or a compliance message blocks access | Organization policy | Use the required managed Edge profile and contact your administrator or helpdesk for persistent blocks. |
This separation matters because repairing Edge cannot correct a Windows account that failed to load, and changing an Edge profile will not bypass a policy imposed by an employer or school.

1. Confirm the Edge profile and account
Edge sync belongs to an Edge profile. Being signed in to Windows, or simply opening Edge, does not prove that the intended Microsoft account is signed in to the browser or that sync is enabled.
Check the profile menu
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the profile icon near the upper-left of the browser toolbar.
- Look at the account name and email address shown for the active profile.
- If it is the wrong account, select the intended account. If it is not listed, choose the option to add or sign in with another account.
- When Edge offers a sign-in choice for syncing, select it and complete the account prompts.
Microsoft also documents the path Settings > Profiles > Sign in. Use that path when the profile flyout does not show the sign-in control. Verify the email address carefully; a personal Microsoft account and a work or school account can have similar display names but different data and policies.
Do not create a replacement profile too early
A second profile can make the browser appear empty because profiles keep favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill entries, and payment information separate. Before creating another profile, return to the profile menu and identify whether your original profile is still present. If you already created a new profile, switch back to the original one and check its sync state rather than copying or deleting data.
Personal and managed accounts behave differently
Personal accounts generally let you choose which Edge data types to synchronize. A work or school account may be governed by organizational requirements, including a rule that Edge sign-in is needed to reach internal resources. If Edge prompts you to use a managed account, select the required work or school profile instead of repeatedly retrying a personal account.
2. Verify that sync is on and the needed data type is selected
After confirming the account, inspect the actual synchronization controls. A signed-in profile can still have sync turned off, or it can synchronize some categories while leaving others disabled.
Open the sync controls
- In Edge, select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Settings.
- Select Profiles in the left pane, then choose Sync.
- Check the overall sync switch and the individual data-type switches shown on your installation.
Microsoft lists controls for favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill entries, and payment information. The exact list and labels can change with the installed Edge version, so use the controls currently displayed rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.

Match the missing item to its switch
If favorites are absent, confirm that favorites synchronization is enabled on both devices and that both devices use the same intended account and profile. For missing passwords, check the passwords switch; history and open tabs have their own controls. An absent category is therefore not proof that the account failed—its switch may simply be off.
Allow time for a normal sync cycle
Keep Edge open and connected after changing a sync setting, then check the other device while it is online. Do not repeatedly switch accounts during this check: each account has a different synchronized dataset, and rapid profile changes make it harder to tell which profile supplied the data.
For Microsoft’s account and sync instructions, see Sign in to sync Microsoft Edge across devices and Change and customize sync settings in Microsoft Edge.
3. Check Windows connectivity and sign-in before changing Edge data
Edge cannot complete account operations if Windows itself is offline, has not loaded the expected user profile, or cannot complete sign-in.
Verify the basic connection
- Confirm that Windows shows an active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
- Open another site or service to check whether the connection works beyond Edge.
- Restart the computer, then reopen Edge and retry the profile sign-in.
A restart is useful here because it resets the network session and reloads the Windows user profile. It does not erase Edge data.

Resolve the Windows sign-in issue first. If Windows cannot load the intended account, Edge may open under a different profile context, and browser-level changes will not fix the underlying problem.
Recognize a temporary Windows profile
If Windows reports that it cannot sign in to your account and presents a temporary profile, treat that as a profile-loading condition, not an Edge sync setting. Save any work you create during the temporary session before signing out. Microsoft warns that files created in that temporary profile can be lost when you sign out. Do not use the temporary desktop as a place to reorganize or delete Edge data.
See Microsoft’s explanation of the message at “We can’t sign in to your account” error message. If the normal Windows profile does not return after the documented first-line checks, involve your organization’s support channel or a qualified Windows administrator rather than applying registry changes casually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Update and repair Edge when the browser itself is malfunctioning
Use this section when Edge will not open correctly, crashes, displays broken settings, or behaves inconsistently even after the correct profile and account are confirmed. Repair is for Edge’s installation; it is not a guarantee that an account or policy problem will be resolved.
Install available Edge updates
- Open Edge and select Settings and more.
- Choose Settings, then select About Microsoft Edge.
- Allow Edge to check for and install an available update.
- Restart Edge when prompted and test the profile and sync page again.
Repair Edge through Windows Settings
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge, select its three-dot menu, and choose Modify.
- In the Microsoft Edge setup window, select Repair and follow the prompts.
Microsoft says Repair should not affect browser data or settings. It requires an internet connection and administrator rights. Keep the computer online until the operation finishes.
When Modify or Repair is unavailable
If the Modify command is missing because the browser is managed by an organization, do not try to force a reinstall or bypass the management setting. Contact the administrator or helpdesk; the organization may control updates and repair operations.

Microsoft’s browser-specific steps are at What to do if Microsoft Edge isn’t working.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →5. Protect your data before clearing anything
Clearing browser data is not a neutral troubleshooting step when sync is active. Decide first whether the problem is limited to this device or involves all synchronized devices.
"Deleting data while signed in and syncing will remove it from all of your synced devices."
That warning from Microsoft means a clear-history, clear-passwords, or similar action can propagate beyond the computer in front of you. Do not clear synchronized data merely because an item is missing on one device; first confirm the profile, account, sync switch, and Windows session.
Use a scope decision before any deletion
| Situation | Safer approach |
|---|---|
| Only one device is missing a category | Check its Edge profile, account, connection, and data-type switch. Avoid deletion. |
| The same category is missing everywhere | Confirm the source device and account, then inspect whether that category was ever enabled for sync. |
| You intentionally want to remove synchronized data | Read the scope shown in Edge’s clear-data controls and proceed only after accepting that other synced devices can be affected. |
| Windows is using a temporary profile | Save temporary-session work and fix Windows profile loading before manipulating Edge data. |
Microsoft’s history controls and their implications are described in View and delete browser history in Microsoft Edge. Sync is a replication feature, not a substitute for an independent backup; keep separate copies of files or other information that must be recoverable.
6. Handle work or school sign-in and compliance blocks
Managed environments can require Edge sign-in with a work or school account to access internal resources. A compliance message may prevent access even when Edge works normally for a personal account.
Best Value
Use the required managed profile
- Open the Edge profile menu.
- Select the work or school account specified by your organization, or add it if your administrator allows that.
- Complete the organization’s sign-in or multifactor prompts.
- Retry the internal site or service from that managed profile.
Keep personal browsing in a separate personal profile when your organization’s policy permits it. Separating profiles reduces the chance of checking the wrong account when you are looking for favorites, passwords, or open tabs.
When an administrator must intervene
Persistent compliance errors, blocked sign-in, or a missing Modify command can reflect device-management rules that users cannot change. Record the exact message, the account used, the Edge profile name, and whether other network services work, then send those details to the helpdesk. Microsoft’s organization-focused guidance is available at Troubleshooting compliance error messages for a work or school account.
Symptom-specific paths
“My favorites are not appearing”
- Check that both devices use the same Edge account and profile.
- Open Settings > Profiles > Sync on each device.
- Enable the favorites switch if it is off.
- Confirm Windows is online and not using a temporary profile.
- Only after those checks, update or repair Edge if the browser itself is unstable.
Do not clear favorites to force a refresh; deletion can propagate through sync.

“My passwords are missing”
Confirm the password-sync switch and the exact account first. A different profile can look like an empty password store. If the account is managed, policy may restrict password synchronization or access; ask the administrator before changing settings. Avoid clearing stored passwords as a test.
“Edge keeps asking me to sign in”
Verify that you are selecting the intended account in the profile menu, then test the same sign-in after a Windows restart. If Windows sign-in is unstable or the device is offline, resolve that layer. If the device is organization-managed, a compliance or policy requirement may be causing the repeated prompt.
“Sync is on, but Edge crashes or settings will not open”
That combination points to browser health rather than a missing account. Update Edge from Settings > About Microsoft Edge, then use Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair. Repair needs internet access and administrator rights; contact the administrator if the command is unavailable.
A safe escalation checklist
Work through this checklist in order and stop when the relevant layer is fixed:
- Identify the active Edge profile and verify its email address.
- Confirm that the profile is signed in for sync, not merely open in the browser.
- Review Settings > Profiles > Sync and enable only the data types you intend to synchronize.
- Check Windows connectivity, restart, and confirm that the normal Windows profile—not a temporary one—is loaded.
- If Windows sign-in fails, use Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting path; remember that Safe Mode accepts a password, not a PIN or biometric sign-in.
- Update Edge from Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Use Windows Repair only for Edge malfunction, with an internet connection and administrator rights.
- Before clearing any data, decide whether the action can affect all synced devices.
- For work or school accounts, use the required managed profile and escalate compliance or management blocks to the administrator.
This order keeps account selection, sync configuration, browser repair, Windows profile recovery, and organization policy separate. That prevents a local browser symptom from turning into an unnecessary account change or a synchronized data deletion.
