Most DualSense connection problems are solved by using the pairing method for the device you actually want to use. For a PS5, turn the console on, connect the controller with a USB data cable, and press the PS button. For a PC, Mac, phone, tablet, or Apple TV, disconnect USB, hold Create and PS until the light bar blinks, then choose the controller in Bluetooth settings. If neither method works, reset the controller with the recessed rear button, reconnect it to the PS5, update software, and contact PlayStation Repairs if the fault remains.
A controller can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time, but PlayStation says one DualSense can retain up to four registered device pairings. A successful Bluetooth connection also does not guarantee that every game or DualSense feature is supported on that platform.

Use this order to restore a connection
- Identify the target: PS5 pairing uses USB first; computers and mobile devices can use Bluetooth or USB.
- Check compatibility: confirm that the target operating system meets PlayStation’s listed minimum version and that the game supports a controller.
- Pair again: use the PS5 USB procedure or the Create-plus-PS Bluetooth procedure below.
- Test the connection: confirm that the player indicator lights and try the controller in the console or device interface before diagnosing an individual game.
- Reset only when necessary: with the PS5 off, use the rear reset button, then reconnect with the official USB cable.
- Update and escalate: update PS5 system software and controller device software; use PlayStation Repairs if the controller still will not connect.
This sequence separates a pairing failure from a game-support or feature-support limitation, so you do not reset a working controller merely because one title does not respond.

The correct procedure depends on where the controller is going. A PS5 expects the first pairing or a move from another PS5 to be made over USB. A computer or mobile device can discover the controller over Bluetooth, but a USB connection still needs a cable that carries data, not only electrical charging.

| Target | Supported minimum listed by PlayStation | Connection options | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 console | Not applicable | USB pairing, then wireless use | A DualSense pairs with one PS5 console at a time. |
| Windows PC | Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 | Bluetooth or USB | Individual games and features may have additional requirements. |
| Mac | macOS Big Sur 11.3 or later | Bluetooth or USB | Haptic feedback, microphone, speaker and some other features are not supported on Mac according to PlayStation’s compatibility guidance. |
| iPhone or iPad | iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5 | Bluetooth or USB where supported by the device | App support and DualSense features vary. |
| Apple TV | tvOS 14.5 or later | Bluetooth | The operating-system minimum does not promise support in every game. |
| Android device | Android 12 or later | Bluetooth or USB where supported | Adaptive triggers are not compatible with Android-based mobile devices. |
These are source-listed operating-system minimums, not a guarantee that every application, game, Bluetooth adapter or controller feature will work. If you are using USB with a computer, phone or tablet, use a compatible USB-C data cable. A cable that charges but has no data conductors can leave the controller apparently unresponsive during a wired pairing attempt.
Pair or reconnect a DualSense with a PS5
Use this method for a new controller, a controller that was last used with another PS5, or one that stopped reconnecting wirelessly.
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense to the console with a compatible USB cable. For the most reliable result, use the official cable or another known-good USB-C data cable.
- If the controller is off, press the PS button.
- Wait for the light bar to blink and the player indicator to illuminate. Those signals show that the console has recognized the controller.
- Once the controller has sufficient battery charge, disconnect the cable and continue using it wirelessly.
The USB step is required when moving the controller to a different PS5 because one controller can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time. If the controller was paired with another console, do not expect it to switch consoles simply because both systems are nearby; connect it to the intended PS5 by USB and press PS.

If the PS5 does not react to the PS button
- Confirm that the PS5 is actually powered on rather than in a state where it cannot accept the connection.
- Check that the USB plug is fully inserted at both ends.
- Try a different compatible USB-C data cable if the current cable only charges other devices or has been damaged.
- Leave the controller connected long enough to obtain battery charge, then press PS again.
- If the controller remains unresponsive, proceed to the reset procedure rather than repeatedly pressing the button.
Pair with a PC, Mac, phone, tablet or Apple TV over Bluetooth
Bluetooth pairing uses a deliberate button sequence. The controller must not be actively connected to a PS5 or another device while you start discovery mode.

- Check that the player indicator is off. If it is on, hold the PS button until the controller turns off.
- Disconnect any USB cable from the controller. Leaving USB connected prevents the intended wireless pairing sequence.
- Hold the Create and PS buttons together until the light bar begins to blink.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the target device and start a device search.
- Select the DualSense controller from the discovered-device list.
- Wait for pairing to finish. The light bar blinks and the player indicator lights when the connection is established.
Pair the controller separately with each device you intend to use. When the controller is off, pressing PS reconnects it to the last device used. PlayStation says a single controller can retain up to four registered device pairings, with each pairing assigned to a slot. This lets you keep several devices registered instead of starting from an empty list every time, although you still need to select the appropriate slot when changing between stored devices. PlayStation documents the button combinations for choosing and switching those slots; use that sequence from its current support instructions rather than guessing at a shortcut.
When the device cannot find the controller
- Turn the controller off completely, disconnect USB, and repeat the Create-plus-PS sequence.
- Make sure the target device’s Bluetooth screen is open while the light bar is blinking; discovery mode is temporary.
- Confirm that the operating system meets the minimum version in the compatibility table.
- If the controller was just used with a PS5, repeat the off-and-disconnected-USB steps before attempting Bluetooth.
- Test the controller over USB when the target supports wired input. A wired test helps distinguish a Bluetooth discovery issue from a controller-wide failure, but it still requires a data-capable cable.
Use USB on a computer or mobile device when Bluetooth is unsuitable
USB can be preferable for a desktop computer without a reliable Bluetooth adapter, for games that require a wired connection for particular features, or when you need to test the controller before troubleshooting wireless pairing. Connect the USB-C end to the controller and the other end to a compatible port on the target device, then allow the operating system or game to detect it.
Do not assume that a charging indication proves that data communication is working. A charge-only cable can deliver power while preventing the operating system from seeing the controller. If the device does not detect the DualSense, replace the cable with a known-good USB-C data cable and try another compatible port.
Platform support is separate from basic USB detection. A controller can appear in Windows and still lack a feature in a particular game. Conversely, a game may list only partial controller support even though the operating system recognizes the device.
Reset the DualSense correctly
Resetting is the next step when the normal PS5 and Bluetooth procedures do not restore a connection. Perform it with the PS5 turned off. PlayStation’s Canadian support instructions specify holding the recessed button for at least five seconds; the United States support index states that a reset does not reconfigure the controller or affect its pairing settings.

- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Disconnect the controller from USB.
- Find the small recessed reset button on the back of the DualSense, near the shoulder-button area.
- Use a pin or another pin-like tool to press and hold the reset button for at least five seconds, following the Canadian PlayStation support instruction.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the official USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
Reset is not a replacement for pairing. After the reset, the USB connection and PS-button press are what re-establish the controller’s connection with the console. Because PlayStation states that reset does not affect pairing settings, do not describe this operation as erasing every stored device pairing.

When reset does not solve the problem
If the controller still does not respond after the five-second reset and USB reconnection, repeat the test with a different compatible data cable and, where possible, another USB port. If it remains unavailable, move to software updates and repair rather than repeatedly resetting it. The official guidance does not promise that reset will correct a damaged cable, port, Bluetooth adapter, operating-system setting or internal hardware fault.
Update PS5 and controller software
When you can operate the console, install the latest PS5 system software. PlayStation distributes DualSense device-software updates through PS5 system-software updates, and the manual controller-update path on the console is:
Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software
Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the controller connected as requested. If you need to update from a Windows PC instead, PlayStation directs users to its PlayStation Accessories software. Updating cannot guarantee compatibility with every game, but it removes an outdated-console or outdated-controller software issue from the diagnosis.

Distinguish a connection failure from a feature or game limitation
A lit player indicator and a working input in the operating system show that a connection exists. They do not prove that every DualSense capability is available. PlayStation says feature availability depends on both the device and the game.
| Feature or behavior | What PlayStation’s guidance says | How to interpret a failure |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive triggers | Require game support and are not compatible with Android-based mobile devices. | If buttons and sticks work but trigger resistance does not, check the game’s support and the platform before repairing the controller. |
| Haptic feedback | Requires game support; on PC it requires USB; it is not compatible with Mac or mobile devices. | Bluetooth input can be healthy even when haptics are absent. |
| Built-in microphone and speaker | Supported on Windows PC when the game supports them; not supported on Mac or mobile according to the listed guidance. | Missing audio input or output on those platforms is a compatibility limit, not proof of failed pairing. |
| Headset jack | Requires a wired PC or Mac connection and is not compatible with mobile. | Use USB on a computer when the game or application needs this function. |
| General game input | Game-level controller support varies; a game’s listing can identify full or partial controller support. | Check the individual game’s support information after confirming that the operating system detects the controller. |
This distinction is especially important on mobile devices. A successful Bluetooth pairing can provide standard button and stick input while advanced effects remain unavailable by design.

The controller works on one PS5 but not another
Use the USB pairing procedure with the intended PS5. A DualSense is paired with only one PS5 at a time, so wireless reconnection to the previous console does not transfer automatically. Once the new console recognizes it and the battery has enough charge, remove the cable for wireless play.
The light bar never enters Bluetooth discovery mode
Hold PS until the player indicator is off, unplug USB, and then hold Create and PS together until the light bar blinks. If the sequence still produces no blinking light, perform the PS5-off reset and wired reconnection. A controller that remains inert after reset and a known-good data cable should be sent to PlayStation Repairs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe controller pairs but a game ignores it
Test the controller in the operating system or console interface. If basic input works, check whether that game lists full or partial controller support and whether it supports the specific DualSense features you expect. Do not treat missing haptic feedback, adaptive triggers or audio functions as a pairing failure when the platform excludes them.

Bluetooth works, but haptics do not work on a PC
PlayStation’s guidance requires USB for haptic feedback on PC, in addition to game support. Connect the controller with a data cable and verify that the game supports haptics. Bluetooth pairing itself can remain fully functional.
USB charging works but the computer cannot see the controller
Replace the cable with a compatible USB-C data cable and try another compatible port. Charging alone does not demonstrate that data lines are present. If a wired data connection still fails on a supported operating system, try the reset-and-update sequence.
The controller keeps reconnecting to the wrong device
When off, pressing PS reconnects the controller to the last device used. Turn it off, disconnect USB, and deliberately select the intended stored pairing slot using PlayStation’s documented slot-selection button sequence. If the destination is a different PS5, use USB pairing instead because the controller can pair with only one PS5 console at a time.

Use PlayStation Repairs when the controller still fails after all of the following have been completed:
- The correct PS5 USB pairing or external Bluetooth procedure was followed.
- The target operating system meets PlayStation’s listed minimum version.
- A compatible USB-C data cable was tested, not merely a charging cable.
- The controller was reset with the PS5 off and the rear button held for at least five seconds.
- PS5 system software and DualSense device software were updated when the console could be operated.
- The problem was reproduced outside a single game where possible.
These steps address pairing state, software version and basic connection paths. They cannot establish whether a particular Bluetooth adapter, USB port, cable, operating-system setting or internal component is damaged, so unresolved cases should be assessed by the official repair service rather than diagnosed from symptoms alone.
Practical checklist before contacting support
- Write down the target device and operating-system version.
- Note whether the controller works on a PS5, over USB, over Bluetooth, or nowhere.
- Record whether the player indicator lights and whether the light bar blinks during discovery.
- Identify the cable used and confirm that it carries data.
- State whether the failure affects all games or only one title.
- List the features that fail: basic buttons, wireless connection, haptics, adaptive triggers, microphone, speaker or headset jack.
- Include whether the reset and PS5 software update were completed.
Providing those details prevents a feature-compatibility issue from being mistaken for a dead controller and gives repair support a clear history of the connection tests already performed.
