Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is no single fix for dropped frames in a continuous FFmpeg-to-YouTube stream: first find out whether frames are being lost during encoding, delivery to YouTube, or viewer playback. Save the FFmpeg command and logs, check YouTube’s timestamped Live Control Room health messages, then change only the settings implicated by the evidence. Validate the repair with a representative test before relying on it unattended.
First identify where frames are being lost
“Dropped frames” can describe different failures. FFmpeg may not encode in real time; the connection may fail to deliver video steadily to YouTube; YouTube may flag an ingest configuration problem; or playback may stutter even when the sender’s output is healthy. A frame-drop message from a playback tool is not proof that the live encoder or YouTube ingest is dropping frames.
- Save the evidence before changing anything. Keep the exact FFmpeg command and relevant complete log output. Note the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec and target bitrate, plus the timestamps of any YouTube warnings. This gives you a before-and-after comparison.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review the health messages at the same timestamps as the symptoms. YouTube marks critical errors in red and moderate errors in yellow. Treat the wording of the specific message as a diagnostic clue, not as proof of a single root cause. YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance explains these alerts.
- Separate sender problems from playback problems. If FFmpeg reports that it cannot keep pace, investigate encoding capacity. If YouTube reports a configuration or ingestion problem, follow that specific health message. If neither reports trouble but a viewer sees stutter, check playback conditions and avoid assuming the encoder is at fault.
Check whether FFmpeg can encode in real time
Watch the FFmpeg output and the host’s CPU or GPU utilization while the stream runs. If encoding falls behind the input, the machine may not have enough processing capacity for the chosen workload. High utilization, thermal limits or other resource pressure can contribute; the actual cause depends on the host and command.
- Try a less demanding encoder preset if the current software-encoding settings are too complex for the machine.
- As a diagnostic, lower resolution or frame rate and see whether FFmpeg then keeps pace.
- If the host supports it, test a hardware encoder. Its availability and exact settings depend on the device, drivers and FFmpeg build.
Change one variable at a time and compare the resulting logs and YouTube health status. These are troubleshooting branches, not a guarantee that any particular preset, resolution change or encoder will fix the stream.

Check sustained upload and delivery to YouTube
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a streaming quality the internet connection can reliably support. A speed test is a capacity check, not proof that the connection will deliver the stream steadily over time. Compare the stream’s target bitrate with the connection’s sustained performance and monitor YouTube’s health during a representative run. YouTube’s guidance is: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See YouTube’s streaming settings and recommendations.
If upload delivery appears unstable, trial a lower bitrate and compare the health messages. Where the evidence points to local Wi-Fi instability, a stable wired connection may be worth testing; this is a troubleshooting inference, not a specific YouTube requirement. A cable will not fix encoder overload, incorrect stream settings, ISP congestion or a YouTube ingest-side issue.

Match the stream to YouTube’s ingest settings
For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s current guidance supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate recommendation for the exact codec, resolution and frame rate you send; the figures below are only the H.264 rows listed in YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026.
| H.264 resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendations, not universal targets for other codecs, resolutions or frame rates. The same guidance provides different ranges for H.265 and AV1; consult the matching row rather than applying the H.264 figures to another codec. Check the current encoder settings table.

If YouTube flags keyframe frequency, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, codec, audio or a primary/backup stream mismatch, correct the flagged item and retest. YouTube’s health API includes these issue classes; a generic dropped-frame count does not tell you which unrelated setting to change. See YouTube’s live-stream health definitions.
Do not confuse playback frame drops with ingest loss
FFmpeg’s ffplay option -framedrop concerns dropping video frames during playback when playback is out of sync; under the documented clock condition it is enabled by default. That behavior is distinct from encoding falling behind or YouTube failing to receive video. FFmpeg’s ffplay documentation describes the playback option.

YouTube’s health API defines videoIngestionStarved as “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” That points to a delivery or ingestion problem and possible viewer buffering, but it does not identify the precise sender-side cause. Check the surrounding health messages and FFmpeg logs before choosing a fix.
Validate the fix for a continuous stream
YouTube recommends a preflight test using audio and movement similar to the intended stream, with health monitored during the event. For a 24/7 workflow, extend that test long enough to exercise the conditions under which the failure occurred; retain logs and set up alerting appropriate to your operation. YouTube does not prescribe a soak-test duration or a particular watchdog or restart design, so those choices depend on the stream and host.
