How to Fix drmk.sys Blue Screens in Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7

Drmk.sys is a Microsoft kernel audio component, not an app you should download or replace. A blue screen that names it usually means a problem in the protected kernel-streaming audio path, often involving an audio or chipset driver, a recent hardware or Windows change, or system corruption. Start by recording the complete stop message, then use Safe Mode and Device Manager to update, roll back, disable or remove the implicated audio device. If Windows will not remain running, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Repeated crashes should be confirmed with a memory dump before you replace any system file.

What drmk.sys does and whether it is safe

Microsoft documents Drmk.sys as a kernel-mode system driver that implements digital-rights-management functions for kernel-streaming audio. Portcls.sys exposes related audio entry points and calls Drmk.sys. In practical terms, drmk.sys sits in a protected Windows audio-driver path; it is not a media player, downloadable utility or ordinary application.

The normal file is supplied by Windows and is typically in C:WindowsSystem32driversdrmk.sys. Its presence there does not prove that it is damaged, and a stop screen naming it does not prove that it caused the crash. Windows reports the module that was active when the failure became visible; an incompatible third-party audio, chipset, enhancement or recently changed device driver may be the actual fault.

How to check the file without replacing it

  1. Open File Explorer and browse to C:WindowsSystem32drivers (use the drive letter containing your Windows installation).
  2. Right-click drmk.sys, choose Properties, and check the Digital Signatures tab for a Microsoft signature. The exact tab and signer wording can differ by Windows edition.
  3. If a file with the same name is in an unrelated folder, do not download a replacement from a driver or DLL website. Record its location and run a full scan from Windows Security before making changes.

Deleting, renaming or substituting drmk.sys can make Windows audio or startup fail. Repair the driver chain and Windows components instead.

First, capture the evidence and decide whether Windows is usable

Write down the complete stop code, the text after What failed, and when the crash occurs (at startup, when audio begins, after sleep, during a game or after connecting a device). Photograph the screen if necessary. Note any audio hardware, USB dock, headset, graphics card, chipset package or Windows update installed immediately beforehand.

Microsoft notes that many unexpected restarts are resolved by the restart itself. If this is a single event and Windows now runs normally, save your work, restart once, and monitor it. Repeated events require the sequence below; do not assume the first restart fixed the cause.

What you observe Best first path Why
One crash, Windows now stable Record the stop details, restart, install pending Windows and OEM driver updates A transient failure may not recur, but updates address known compatibility problems
Crashes after a new headset, sound card, dock or other hardware Power off, disconnect the new hardware, then test Removing the recent change is the quickest reversible test
Crashes repeatedly but Safe Mode works Use Device Manager in Safe Mode to update, roll back, disable or uninstall the implicated device Safe Mode loads a minimal driver set, helping isolate a normal-startup driver
Windows cannot stay booted Enter WinRE and use Startup Settings, System Restore or offline repair commands Offline tools can work when the installed system cannot remain running
Crashes continue after driver and system repair Configure a dump and inspect it in WinDbg The stack can identify the third-party module that the drmk.sys name alone cannot

Fix drmk.sys when Windows starts normally

1. Remove a recently added device

Shut down completely. Disconnect a newly installed internal sound card, USB audio interface, headset, dock or other device that appeared just before the crashes. Reconnect only essential peripherals and boot. If the blue screen stops, install the device maker’s current Windows driver before reconnecting other accessories. If the crash returns as soon as that device is attached, leave it disconnected while you obtain support from its manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode

Safe Mode is useful when a normal startup loads the faulty audio stack too quickly. From the sign-in screen or desktop, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. If Windows will not reach that menu, interrupt startup two or three times to invoke Automatic Repair, then select the same Advanced options path.

Do not judge audio functionality in Safe Mode; sound may be unavailable by design. Use it to change drivers and remove the trigger, then restart normally.

3. Inspect the audio devices in Device Manager

Microsoft’s support instructions begin with Device Manager: right-click Start and select Device Manager. Expand Sound, video and game controllers, Audio inputs and outputs, and, when relevant, System devices for chipset or audio-controller entries. A yellow warning icon, a device that appeared on the crash date, or a vendor audio-enhancement component deserves attention.

  • Plug & Play: Includes user guide and online technical support services. Plug it in and you are ready to go.
  1. Right-click the suspected device and choose Properties. On General, read the device status and error code.
  2. On the Driver tab, select Update Driver and let Windows search, or point it to the package downloaded from the computer or sound-device manufacturer’s support page.
  3. If the problem began after a driver update and Roll Back Driver is available, use it, select a reason, and restart.
  4. If updating does not help, choose Disable device and restart. This is a diagnostic step; it can remove sound until you re-enable the device.
  5. For a clearly implicated recently installed driver, choose Uninstall device. Select the option to remove the driver package only when you are certain it is the new trigger, then restart so Windows can reload a compatible package.

Change one device at a time and record what you did. If several audio entries exist, start with the one tied to the stop timing rather than disabling every device.

4. Install Windows and manufacturer updates

In normal Windows, open Settings > Windows Update (or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in older Windows 10 builds) and select Check for updates. Install cumulative updates and restart as requested. Then visit the support page for the exact computer model or sound-device model and install the current audio and chipset packages for your Windows edition and architecture. Microsoft directs users to the manufacturer when a driver is identified as the source of a stop error.

Prefer the OEM package over a random driver-download site. Check the release notes for your Windows version, and avoid installing a package intended for a different model. If the manufacturer offers separate audio, chipset and firmware updates, follow its stated order; otherwise update the audio package first and test before changing firmware.

5. Reverse a recent Windows or driver change

If the first crash follows a Windows update, driver installation or audio-software change, undo that change rather than stacking more drivers on top of it. Use Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver where available. For a Windows update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, select the update that matches the timeline, and restart. Not every update can be removed; do not force removal of a security update indefinitely.

When the exact change is unclear, use System Restore: search for Create a restore point, open System Properties, select System Restore, choose a restore point dated before the crashes, and review the affected programs before confirming. Personal files are not normally removed, but applications and drivers installed after the restore point can be.

6. Check Windows component and disk integrity

Driver repair cannot correct a damaged component store or file system. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run the supported repair commands one at a time, waiting for each to finish. Save important files first, because a disk check can take a long time and may require a restart.

sfc /scannow

Restart after both commands. If either command reports that it could not complete, repeat the repair from WinRE using the offline procedure below rather than repeatedly running a failed online repair.

Use WinRE when drmk.sys prevents startup

WinRE is Windows Recovery Environment. To enter it, use Shift + Restart when possible, or allow Automatic Repair after interrupted startups. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Try the least destructive option that matches the timeline.

Startup Settings and Safe Mode

Select Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 or 5. Once Safe Mode loads, follow the Device Manager rollback, disable or uninstall steps above. If Safe Mode also crashes, return to Advanced options instead of repeatedly forcing normal boots.

Remove a pending update

Open Advanced options > Command Prompt. Windows may assign the installation a drive letter other than C: in recovery. First identify it:

diskpart
list volume
exit

Replace C: below with the volume that contains the Windows folder. To revert an update that is stuck in a pending state, run:

dism /image:C: /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Close Command Prompt and restart. This targets pending update actions; it does not remove every installed update.

Run offline System File Checker

From the same recovery Command Prompt, use the exact Windows and boot-volume paths:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
SFC /Scannow /OffBootDir=C: /OffWinDir=C:Windows

Change both paths if WinRE assigned another letter. Let the scan finish, then restart and test before making another change.

Check the disk when corruption is suspected

When startup errors, file-system messages or an unexpectedly hard shutdown point to disk corruption, run:

chkdsk C: /f /r

The /r scan can take hours on a large or failing drive. If it reports unreadable sectors or the problem returns, back up data from another computer or recovery environment and arrange storage replacement; a driver reinstall will not repair failing media.

Use System Restore or uninstall the latest update

In Advanced options, choose System Restore and select a point before the first drmk.sys crash. If no suitable point exists, try Uninstall Updates and choose the latest quality update. Feature-update rollback availability depends on how long ago the upgrade occurred and whether its recovery files remain.

Find the real cause with a crash dump

If blue screens continue after the audio and chipset driver path has been repaired, a dump is more reliable than repeatedly replacing drmk.sys. In a stable boot, search for View advanced system settings, open Startup and Recovery, and under System failure select Automatic memory dump. Keep the default dump path, usually %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP; small dumps may appear in %SystemRoot%Minidump. Ensure the system drive has free space.

Install WinDbg from Microsoft’s supported distribution, open the dump, and configure symbols with the built-in .symfix command. Then run:

!analyze -v
k
lmvm module_name

!analyze -v summarizes the stop event, k displays the call stack, and lmvm shows details for a named module. Look beyond the first line that says drmk.sys. A stack that repeatedly points to a specific third-party audio effect, virtual-audio, chipset or bus driver is evidence for updating or removing that package. If the stack changes on every crash, hardware memory or storage diagnostics may be warranted; the dump alone may not prove which physical component is failing.

Keep the dump and the exact stop text when contacting the computer or device manufacturer. Do not upload a dump containing personal data to an unknown forum.

Common mistakes that make drmk.sys crashes worse

  • Downloading drmk.sys from a DLL website: the file may be the wrong build, unsigned or modified. Windows component repair and a trusted driver package are safer.
  • Updating every driver at once: you lose the timeline and cannot identify the change that fixed or caused the crash. Change one relevant package, restart and test.
  • Disabling all audio devices permanently: this hides the trigger but does not repair it. Use disabling only to isolate the device, then install a compatible package or obtain manufacturer support.
  • Ignoring chipset and bus drivers: audio controllers depend on the platform driver, so an audio-only reinstall may leave the underlying fault.
  • Repeating hard power-offs: forced shutdowns can create file-system corruption. Use WinRE once the system is unable to boot reliably.
  • Assuming the named Microsoft module is guilty: verify with the call stack and module details before deleting or replacing a protected system file.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

Escalate to the computer or sound-device manufacturer when the crash returns with the current OEM driver, occurs with the audio device physically disconnected, or is accompanied by disk errors, spontaneous power loss or memory-test failures. Provide the model, Windows edition and build, complete stop text, driver versions, steps that reproduce the crash and any dump analysis. If Windows remains unbootable after WinRE repair and you have a current backup, a Windows reset or clean installation may be the final software option; confirm hardware health first so a failing device does not corrupt the new installation.

As an optional shortcut, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show the current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a 2-day free trial requires no credit card, after which a subscription is offered. Results vary, and manual diagnosis is still appropriate when a crash continues.

Final diagnosis

Fixing a drmk.sys blue screen means repairing the audio-driver path, not replacing drmk.sys. Disconnect the newest hardware, use Safe Mode and Device Manager to roll back or change the implicated device, install Windows and OEM audio/chipset updates, and use WinRE when startup is broken. If those steps do not stop the crashes, collect a dump and identify the failing third-party module before taking more drastic action.
