To troubleshoot Radeon driver crashes or black screens, first restore the GPU and system to stock settings, note when the failure occurs, and check the release notes for your exact card and driver. If the issue began after an update, use a documented workaround or consider returning to the last driver that worked. A black screen can also come from overheating, power, a loose connection, or hardware trouble, so a driver reinstall is not the right first move in every case.
Start by identifying when the failure happens
Before changing drivers or opening the PC, write down what changed shortly before the problem began: a Radeon driver, game, application, firmware, BIOS, or Windows update. Note whether the screen goes black during startup, only in a particular game or video workload, or during ordinary use.

Try to distinguish a temporary loss of display signal from a full system hang or reboot. This pattern helps narrow the cause; it does not by itself prove that the GPU or driver is at fault.
Return the system to a stable baseline
Remove variables before testing another driver. Restore GPU tuning and overclocking to factory defaults, and temporarily disable third-party overclocking or monitoring utilities. Check that the fans and cooling are working and clear dust if needed. Where feasible, use supported system software and a stock configuration while troubleshooting. AMD lists unstable overclocking, overheating, BIOS or OS configuration, driver issues, and unsupported or faulty hardware among possible causes of instability: AMD stability troubleshooting guidance.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Check the installed driver and its release notes
Confirm the exact Radeon model and installed driver version, then find the release notes for that package. Look for the same symptom and for a workaround that applies to your GPU, operating system, game, or configuration. AMD’s guidance is to use a documented workaround when it fits; if none is available, consider reverting to a driver version that did not produce the issue. See AMD’s driver troubleshooting guidance.
A black screen is not automatically evidence of a failed GPU. For example, AMD’s Adrenalin 21.5.2 release notes warned that Enhanced Sync could cause black screens in some games and system configurations, and advised affected users to disable it temporarily. That is a historical, version-specific example—not proof that Enhanced Sync explains a current problem. Check the notes for the version you actually use: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 21.5.2 release notes.

Perform a clean driver installation if needed
If the release-note workaround does not help, or the driver appears corrupted, a clean installation may be appropriate. AMD describes both the installer’s Factory Reset option and AMD Cleanup Utility as ways to prepare for a fresh installation. Follow the current instructions for your particular package and system rather than assuming every installer exposes the same options.

Using AMD Cleanup Utility
AMD Cleanup Utility removes installed AMD graphics and audio drivers and software in preparation for a new graphics software and driver installation. AMD recommends running it in Windows Safe Mode for best results, and a reboot is required after cleanup. The display may briefly flicker or go blank during the process; AMD says cleanup can take 15–20 minutes depending on the system. The utility creates a restore point before cleanup. Read AMD’s current instructions at AMD Cleanup Utility.

- AMD RDNA 3 Architecture with AI & Ray Tracing Acceleration: Powered by 32 RDNA 3 Compute Units featuring 3rd Gen Ray Tracing Accelerators and 2nd Gen AI Accelerators, delivering lifelike lighting, shadows, and superior machine learning performance for enhanced gaming and content creation.
- Powerful 1080p & 1440p Gaming Engine: Features a max boost clock of up to 2695 MHz, a game clock of 2280 MHz, and 2048 stream processors, ensuring outstanding frame rates in the latest titles.
- 8GB High‑Speed GDDR6 Memory: Equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128‑bit interface running at 18 Gbps, delivering up to 288 GB/s bandwidth for high‑resolution textures and demanding game workloads.
- Close other applications. If Windows Update is running, let it finish before starting cleanup.
- Restart into Windows Safe Mode, as AMD recommends for best results.
- Run AMD Cleanup Utility and allow the process to complete. A brief flicker or blank screen can occur.
- Restart the computer when prompted, then install a driver compatible with the exact GPU and Windows version.
If a problem occurs after cleanup, AMD says the restore point created before the operation can be used for recovery. Do not interrupt the utility just because the display briefly goes blank.

If the symptom remains after returning to stock settings and addressing the driver, check the hardware path. Power the system down before handling internal components. AMD’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking the graphics card’s seating and power, cooling, and power supply as possible sources of instability.

- Confirm that the GPU is seated correctly in the primary PCIe slot and that its PCIe power leads are secure.
- If a PCIe riser cable is installed, remove it for a test and connect the card directly to the motherboard.
- Check that the GPU and system cooling are operating and that dust is not obstructing airflow.
- Verify that the PSU and its connections are suitable for the system.
If available, test with known-working hardware to help isolate the failing component. Treat this as diagnosis, not a reason to buy a replacement part before identifying the fault. There is no single driver version that can be recommended for every older Radeon card. Compare candidate versions using the exact GPU and Windows version, the release notes for the observed issue, and whether the problem started after moving between driver versions. A release note can establish compatibility for its own package at that time; it cannot establish what is currently supported or the best driver today.
For example, AMD’s 2023 Adrenalin 23.11.1 notes listed Radeon VII, RX Vega Series, Radeon Pro Duo, RX 500/500X, and RX 400 Series products as compatible with that package. This historical compatibility listing is not a current driver recommendation: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 23.11.1 release notes.
If you use a laptop or all-in-one PC and AMD’s general driver causes system-specific issues, AMD recommends considering the computer manufacturer’s driver. OEM packages may be customized for that system. Check the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model and operating system; AMD’s general guidance is available at AMD guidance for OEM drivers.
