How to Fix Drafts Around Windows and Doors Before Winter

Fix drafts by locating the leak first, then matching the repair to the joint. Use weatherstripping on parts that move, caulk or backer rod on narrow fixed joints, and low-expansion window-and-door foam for larger gaps around a rough opening. Before sealing an exterior door, correct loose hinges or hardware so the weatherstrip is not compensating for a misaligned door. Afterward, check indoor humidity and ventilation: a tighter home can need more deliberate moisture control.

Why drafts deserve attention before cold weather

A draft is uncontrolled air movement through a gap in a window, door, frame, trim joint, or rough opening. It can make a room feel cold even when the thermostat is set correctly, create uneven temperatures, and increase the workload on heating equipment. ENERGY STAR says air sealing can save up to 10% on annual energy bills; the year and exact home conditions for that estimate are not stated on the accessed ENERGY STAR page. A U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) page published in 2021 says roughly 10%–20% of an average U.S. household’s annual energy cost can be wasted through drafts, air leaks around openings, and outdated heating and cooling systems. That range is a national estimate, not a prediction for every house.

Sealing windows and doors improves comfort, but it is not automatically the highest-priority air-sealing work. DOE notes that significant leakage can also be hidden in attics and basements. If a home has many leaks, a whole-house assessment can identify whether those areas should be addressed before replacing every window seal.

Find the leak before buying materials

Do not start by spreading caulk over every visible joint. First determine whether air is passing through a moving joint, a fixed trim seam, or the space between a unit and its framing. ENERGY STAR identifies “drafts around your closed window or door” as a sign of leakage.

Use the paper test on a closed window

  1. Open the window and place a sheet of paper across the contact area where the sash meets the frame.
  2. Close and latch the window over the paper.
  3. Try to pull the paper out. Repeat at several points around the sash.
  4. Mark locations where the paper slides out easily. Those points may have a compressed, missing, or poorly fitted seal.

The paper test checks compression at the operable joint. It does not diagnose a gap between the frame and the wall, so inspect the perimeter separately.

Trace seams with incense smoke

  1. Close and latch the window or door.
  2. Turn off fans that could create misleading air currents, while keeping the room safe and ventilated for the incense.
  3. Move a smoking incense stick slowly along the sash, frame, trim, and corners.
  4. Watch for smoke that bends, pulls, or wavers toward a seam. Mark the exact spot for repair.

Never leave burning incense unattended, and keep it away from curtains, paper, and other combustible materials. For a larger investigation, a professional can use a blower-door test; that is part of DOE’s whole-house approach rather than a simple caulk-and-weatherstrip job.

Look for daylight and feel for movement

  • Visible daylight around a closed sash or door is a direct warning that the seal is incomplete.
  • Stand on the drafty side of a closed exterior door on a windy day and check the side jambs, head (top), and threshold.
  • Check whether the door leaf moves when you push it near the latch. Movement can indicate loose hinges, a loose knob, or a strike plate that is not pulling the door tightly against its gasket.
  • Inspect exterior trim for open mitres, cracked caulk, or a joint between trim and wall.

Record each leak by location and by whether the joint moves. That distinction determines the material you should use.

Choose the repair by joint type

Leak location Preferred treatment Key selection or installation check
Window or door sash that opens and closes Weatherstripping Choose a profile that closes the measured gap, stays flexible in cold weather, and does not prevent normal operation.
Exterior door side jambs and head Weatherstrip, often with a gasket or compression profile Adjust hinges, knob, and strike plate first; the finished door must still open, latch, and lock smoothly.
Bottom of an exterior door Door sweep or gasketed door-bottom seal Fit the sweep to the threshold without dragging so the door closes fully.
Narrow fixed seam at trim or frame Paintable interior or exterior caulk Use a continuous bead at the appropriate joint; prepare a clean, dry surface and follow the product label.
Wide fixed joint Foam backer rod followed by caulk Use backer rod to support the sealant instead of filling a deep void with caulk alone.
Space between a unit and rough framing Low-expansion spray foam labeled for windows and doors, caulk, or backer rod as appropriate Do not use high-expansion general foam that can bow a frame; never rely on fibrous insulation alone to stop airflow.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) describes weatherstripping as a treatment for operable windows and doors. DOE Building Science Education gives the same practical boundary for fixed openings: “Do not rely on fibrous insulation alone to block airflow; it will not air seal.”

Prices are not established in the cited guidance and vary by product, size, and region. Buy enough material for each measured opening, plus a small allowance for cuts, rather than choosing by package appearance alone.

Materials and tools checklist

Materials

  • Weatherstripping kit in a suitable foam, V-strip, tubular, magnetic, or compression profile.
  • Exterior door sweep or gasketed door-bottom seal.
  • Paintable caulk rated for the interior or exterior joint being sealed, plus a caulk gun.
  • Foam backer rod for larger fixed joints.
  • Low-expansion spray foam specifically labeled for windows and doors.

Tools and protective equipment

  • Measuring tape and pencil or painter’s tape for marking leak locations.
  • Utility knife and scissors for trimming seals.
  • Screwdriver or drill for hinge, strike-plate, and weatherstrip fasteners.
  • Gloves and eye protection.
  • Dust mask when fiberglass or dusty insulation may be disturbed.
  • Cleaning cloth and a suitable surface cleaner; the sealant label may specify preparation requirements.

Read the manufacturer’s instructions for surface temperature, curing, compatibility, and fastener spacing. A product that is appropriate for a fixed exterior seam may be unsuitable for an operating sash.

Seal drafty windows step by step

1. Inspect the sash, frame, and trim

Run the paper and smoke tests around the closed window. Check for daylight, failed gaskets, cracked caulk, and movement at the sash. Separate the findings into moving joints and fixed joints before opening a tube of sealant.

2. Weatherstrip the operable joint

  1. Measure the gap or identify where the existing seal no longer compresses. Measure each side separately if the gap is uneven.
  2. Select foam, V-strip, tubular, magnetic, or compression weatherstripping that fits the profile and closes the gap without interfering with the latch or hinges.
  3. Clean and dry the bonding or fastening surface. Remove loose old material without damaging the frame.
  4. Install the strip continuously along the leaking contact area, following the product’s orientation and fastening instructions.
  5. Close and latch the window. It should require normal effort, remain fully seated, and move freely when reopened.
  6. Repeat the smoke test. If air still enters, look for a separate frame-to-wall or trim leak instead of adding layers that make the sash bind.

NRCan’s selection principle is more important than the material’s name: the seal must remain flexible in cold weather and allow the window to operate.

3. Caulk fixed trim and frame joints

NRCan advises a continuous bead around window trim where it meets the wall, at mitred trim joints, and between trim and frame. Apply caulk only to a sound, clean joint. Tool the bead as directed by the product label and keep the sealant on the intended surfaces; do not bridge a moving sash with a rigid bead.

If a joint is too wide or deep for caulk to span reliably, press in foam backer rod first and then apply caulk over it. Backer rod controls the sealant depth and gives the bead a surface to adhere to.

4. Seal the rough opening when accessible

The rough opening is the space between the window unit and the surrounding framing. If it is exposed during installation or trim removal, fill the gap with caulk, window-and-door low-expansion canned foam, or foam backer rod as the joint requires. DOE specifically warns that fibrous insulation alone will not air-seal this space. A DOE Building Science Education summary reports that sealing a 3/4-inch rough-opening gap reduced equivalent leakage area from 28.2 cm²/m² to 0.5 cm²/m² in an Oak Ridge National Laboratory Buildings Technology Center study; that is a measured study result, not a guaranteed reduction for every opening.

Use only foam labeled for windows and doors. Excess expansion can distort a frame and create a new operating problem. Protect surrounding finishes, wear the recommended protective equipment, and allow the product to cure according to its label before replacing trim or testing operation.

Fix exterior door drafts without making the door stick

1. Correct alignment and hardware first

  1. Close the door and examine the reveal between the slab and frame. An uneven reveal suggests alignment trouble rather than a missing gasket alone.
  2. Tighten loose hinge screws and replace a screw with a longer, compatible fastener only when the frame construction and manufacturer allow it.
  3. Check the knob, latch, and strike plate. Adjust the strike so the latch pulls the door snugly against the existing seal without requiring force.
  4. Open and close the door several times. It should swing freely and latch smoothly before you add new weatherstripping.

DOE’s door weatherstripping job aid places these adjustments before measuring and fastening new seals. A gasket cannot correct a door that is sagging or failing to latch.

2. Measure each side and the head

Measure the left side, right side, and top separately. The DOE job aid calls for measuring each side of the doorway and the top or bottom, then cutting pieces to those dimensions. Mark which piece belongs where; small differences in jamb length are common.

3. Install side and top weatherstripping

  1. Hold each piece in its intended position and check that it contacts the closed door evenly.
  2. Notch the side pieces where necessary so they meet the top piece cleanly without bunching.
  3. Apply a thin caulk bead aligned with the screw holes when the installation instructions call for it.
  4. Fasten the weatherstrip with the manufacturer’s screws. Start with the supplied or specified fastener pattern rather than over-tightening, which can deform the seal.
  5. Close the door and inspect the contact. The gasket should compress enough to stop air but not so much that the latch, lock, or hinges are strained.

4. Seal the bottom edge

Install an exterior door sweep or gasketed door-bottom seal when the leak is at the threshold. Trim or position it so it contacts the threshold continuously while the door still opens without dragging. Check the corners; a side gap can remain even when the center of the sweep touches.

5. Test operation and leakage

Operate the door from fully open to fully latched several times. Confirm that the latch and deadbolt engage, the sweep does not catch, and the weatherstrip stays in place. Repeat the smoke test around the sides, head, and bottom. If the door still does not fit snugly, NRCan recommends repairing or replacing the door, frame, hardware, gaskets, or weatherstripping as appropriate rather than layering incompatible seals.

Seal fixed gaps around doors and windows

Use caulk for narrow, stable joints

Caulk is suited to a joint that does not move significantly. Common locations include the perimeter where trim meets the wall, mitred trim joints, and the seam between trim and frame. Apply one continuous bead rather than a series of short dabs, and follow the product label for tooling, paintability, and weather conditions.

Use backer rod for larger joints

When a gap is too large for a single bead to bridge, insert foam backer rod to the recommended depth, then caulk over it. The rod reduces the amount of sealant needed and helps the finished bead accommodate normal movement. Do not compress it so aggressively that it disappears into the cavity.

Use low-expansion foam at rough openings

Low-expansion foam made for windows and doors is intended for the void between a unit and framing. Apply it sparingly and in the sequence specified by the manufacturer. The goal is to stop airflow without pushing the frame out of square. Fibrous insulation can provide thermal resistance, but DOE states it will not air-seal by itself.

Prevent moisture problems after air sealing

Air sealing changes how indoor moisture moves. EPA explains that caulking and storm windows can keep interior glass warmer and reduce condensation. That benefit does not mean every condensation problem is solved by more sealant: cooking, bathing, drying clothes, and high indoor humidity still add water vapor.

  • Do not block required combustion-air openings or exhaust paths.
  • If the home becomes noticeably tighter, confirm that ventilation is adequate rather than assuming a draft was the only problem.

Condensation on the room side of glass can indicate a cold surface or excessive indoor humidity. Condensation between insulated-glass panes points to a failed window unit and is not repaired by surface caulk.

When a professional is the safer choice

Hire qualified help when the repair involves complicated trim, extensive frame damage, or conditions beyond a small seal replacement. ENERGY STAR recommends professional assistance for complicated trim and for homes built before 1978 where disturbing painted surfaces may create a lead hazard. Do not sand, scrape, or remove old paint around a window or door until lead-safe requirements have been considered.

DOE’s whole-house approach includes combustion-appliance safety testing, ventilation and moisture assessment, and blower-door testing. Those checks are appropriate when the home has fuel-burning appliances, widespread drafts, unexplained pressure differences, recurring condensation, or symptoms that do not match the visible opening. A technician can identify hidden leakage in attics, basements, ducts, and other transitions that a window-by-window repair will miss.

Troubleshoot common failed repairs

Symptom after repair Likely cause Next action
Window is hard to close Weatherstrip is too thick, misaligned, or installed where the sash moves Remove the interfering section, verify the gap, and choose a profile that compresses without binding.
Door will not latch New gasket is over-compressed or the door is misaligned Correct hinges or strike alignment, then refit the seal; do not force the latch.
Draft remains beside the trim The leak is in the rough opening or a trim-to-wall joint, not the sash seal Trace with smoke and seal the fixed joint with caulk, backer rod, or window-and-door foam as appropriate.
Caulk cracks or pulls away Dirty or damp surface, unsuitable product, excessive joint movement, or incorrect bead geometry Remove failed material, prepare the joint, and use a compatible sealant with backer rod where needed.
Foam bows the frame Product expanded too aggressively or too much was applied Stop forcing the sash or door. Have the frame assessed; replacement or careful removal may be necessary.
Condensation increases Indoor humidity remains high or ventilation is inadequate after tightening the home Use kitchen and bath exhaust, assess moisture sources, and seek a whole-house evaluation if the problem persists.

A practical winter-preparation sequence

  1. Walk the exterior and interior of every window and exterior door, noting daylight, damaged trim, and loose hardware.
  2. Run the paper test on closed windows and the incense-smoke test on suspected seams.
  3. Label each leak as moving or fixed and measure the opening.
  4. Repair loose hinges, knobs, strike plates, and other door alignment problems.
  5. Install weatherstripping on operable joints and a sweep or gasket at an exterior door bottom.
  6. Caulk narrow fixed seams; use backer rod for larger joints.
  7. Use only low-expansion foam labeled for windows and doors at accessible rough openings.
  8. Retest every repaired opening for drafts and normal operation.
  9. Monitor indoor condensation and use kitchen or bath ventilation as needed.
  10. If leaks are widespread, paint may contain lead, combustion appliances are present, or repairs affect complicated trim, arrange professional evaluation.

What a successful repair looks like

A successful repair is not simply a bead of caulk that looks neat. The window or door closes, latches, locks, and opens normally; the smoke or paper test no longer identifies the marked leak; the seal remains flexible in cold weather; and the surrounding trim stays dry and intact. If those conditions are not met, remove the failed approach and diagnose the joint again instead of adding another layer.
