How to Fix DOOM (2016) Crashes, Stuttering, and Audio Problems on PC

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Match the symptom before changing anything: a game that closes before the menu needs the launch-crash sequence; a playable game with hitching or low frame rates needs the performance sequence; missing, distorted, or unusually fast sound needs the audio sequence. Start with Bethesda Support’s checks, change one variable at a time, and test after each change. Vulkan is an optional experiment, not a guaranteed speed or compatibility upgrade.

Identify the failure before troubleshooting

DOOM (2016) problems fall into four useful groups:

  • Launch crash: DOOM closes, freezes, or returns to the desktop before you can play.
  • Low frame rate or stutter: the game starts, but camera movement is uneven, frame rates are consistently low, or hitches occur during play.
  • Missing or distorted audio: music, dialogue, effects, or all sound is silent, crackles, or comes from the wrong output.
  • Fast or high-pitched audio: sound plays, but voices and effects are unnaturally quick or pitched upward.

Use only the branch that matches what you observe. A driver change aimed at a launch crash will not necessarily correct a Windows playback-format problem, and changing audio hardware will not repair a failed game installation.

Make a clean baseline

Write down the symptom, when it starts, and what changed immediately beforehand. For example, “crashes before the main menu after changing Vulkan,” “stutters only during combat,” or “sound is fast through USB headphones but normal through speakers” gives a support technician a useful starting point. Test one change at a time and use the same save, area, resolution, and output device for comparisons. Otherwise, a simultaneous driver, API, and graphics-setting change can hide which step mattered.

Restart DOOM after graphics API changes and restart Windows after driver installation. Keep temporary security exceptions or disconnected devices only for the test, then restore your normal protection and hardware setup.

Check the published PC requirements first

Steam’s DOOM listing gives these minimum specifications:

Component Minimum listed requirement
Operating system 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10
Processor Intel Core i5-2400 or AMD FX-8320
Memory 8 GB RAM
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 with 2 GB or AMD Radeon HD 7870 with 2 GB
Storage 55 GB available space

These are the game’s listed minimums, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or proof that replacing a component will cure a specific symptom. If the PC is below them, software troubleshooting can still identify the immediate problem, but sustained performance may remain limited.

Steam separately announced that its client supports Windows 10 and later beginning January 1, 2024. That client notice is separate from the historical operating-system requirement shown for the game; do not treat it as a revised DOOM system requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check free space as well as total drive capacity. The listing calls for 55 GB available, and updates or file verification may need additional working room. A drive that is nearly full can interrupt file replacement even when the game was previously installed successfully. This is a capacity check, not a reason to buy a new drive unless the machine is genuinely below the requirement or the existing drive has an independently diagnosed fault.

Fix a crash on launch

Work through these checks in order. After each step, start DOOM normally so you know which change affected the result.

  1. Confirm the requirements. Compare your 64-bit Windows installation, processor, RAM, graphics card and free storage with the Steam listing above. A nearly full drive can also prevent updates or file replacement, so leave room beyond the stated 55 GB where possible.
  2. Install the current graphics driver. Download the latest driver intended for your NVIDIA or AMD GPU from its manufacturer and restart Windows when the installer requests it. Do not use the driver numbers in Bethesda’s July 2016 Vulkan FAQ as current advice; those versions are historical.
  3. Verify the Steam installation. In Steam, open Library, right-click DOOM, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam replaces files that are missing or damaged. Let the process finish before launching.
  4. Assign the game to the primary GPU. On a laptop or a desktop with more than one graphics processor, open the NVIDIA or AMD graphics-control panel and assign DOOMx64.exe to the high-performance or primary GPU. Save the profile, then restart the game. Running on an integrated adapter can look like a game crash or produce immediate instability on systems that should use a discrete card.
  5. Check DirectX and security interference. Install any DirectX components offered by the game or Windows, and check whether firewall or antivirus software is blocking the executable. Bethesda lists adding a Windows Defender exception as a troubleshooting step. Use an exception for the legitimate game installation rather than leaving protection disabled, and restore any temporary test setting afterward.
  6. Return in-game settings to a stable baseline. If you can reach the menu, undo aggressive graphics or display changes and test with conservative settings. A setting that prevents the renderer from initializing can make the next launch fail even though the installation is intact.
  7. Escalate with diagnostic information. If the crash remains after the checks above, contact Bethesda Support and attach a DxDiag report. Press Win+R, enter dxdiag, allow the diagnostic tool to finish loading, choose Save All Information, and include the resulting text file with your support request. Describe when the crash occurs and which steps you completed.

When a launch crash follows a graphics change

If the game stopped launching immediately after switching graphics API, resolution, or another display option, undo that change first if you can access the configuration. Switching between OpenGL and Vulkan requires a game restart; the renderer is not swapped while a session is running. If Vulkan will not initialize, return to OpenGL through the menu when possible, then restart.

Do not repeatedly reinstall the whole game before verifying files and checking the driver, GPU assignment, DirectX, and security software. Those are Bethesda’s targeted first checks and are less disruptive than deleting a working installation. If the crash began after an update, note the date and whether Steam reported replaced files when verification completed.

Reduce low frame rates and stuttering

For a game that reaches gameplay but runs unevenly, begin with the least invasive changes and measure the result in the same scene or level after each one.

  1. Check the minimums and update the GPU driver. Confirm the hardware against the Steam table, install the current driver from the GPU manufacturer, and reboot. A driver update is a compatibility check, not a promise of a fixed frame rate.
  2. Confirm GPU selection. On multi-GPU systems, assign DOOMx64.exe to the primary or high-performance adapter in the relevant graphics-control panel. Confirm the profile is applied to the game executable rather than only to a launcher.
  3. Lower resolution. Open Settings → Video and reduce display resolution, then test the same workload. Resolution changes reduce the number of pixels the GPU must render and are a useful diagnostic even if you later choose a sharper setting.
  4. Change anti-aliasing. In Settings → Video, try a less demanding anti-aliasing option and retest. Keep a note of the original value so you can restore it if this does not help.
  5. Close unnecessary programs. Exit browsers, recording tools, overlays and other background applications before testing. Background CPU, GPU or memory use can create hitching that is not caused by DOOM itself.
  6. Test Vulkan carefully. Open Settings → Advanced Settings → Graphics API, choose Vulkan if your GPU, Windows version and current driver support it, apply the setting, and allow the game to restart. Bethesda says that in some cases Vulkan can improve GPU performance; it is not a universal improvement. Compare frame pacing and stability with OpenGL in the same scene.
  7. Return to OpenGL when Vulkan misbehaves. If Vulkan causes a launch failure, rendering corruption, new stutter or worse frame pacing, switch back to OpenGL and restart. A slower result on one supported system does not mean Vulkan is defective, and a faster result on another system does not make it universally compatible.

Separate low frame rate from hitching

A consistently low frame rate and intermittent stutter are related but not identical observations. Lowering resolution and anti-aliasing is a useful first comparison for a GPU-limited system. Closing unnecessary programs is especially useful when the problem is intermittent and coincides with background CPU, memory, overlay, or recording activity. Record whether the same area improves, stays unchanged, or becomes worse after each test rather than judging from a different level.

What the historical Vulkan FAQ means for older systems

Bethesda’s July 2016 FAQ records specific exceptions that remain useful when diagnosing an older PC. It documents Vulkan launch failure on the GTX 690 and on NVIDIA graphics cards with 2 GB of memory when running Windows 7. It also lists other hardware- and action-specific known issues. These notes describe the software and drivers of that period; they should not be read as a current driver recommendation or as a complete compatibility list for modern hardware.

For a current system, verify support with the GPU manufacturer’s driver documentation and use the observed result on your machine as the deciding factor. Keep OpenGL as the stable fallback whenever Vulkan cannot start or produces worse behavior. Do not infer that every 2 GB card has the same limitation: the documented exception is tied to particular NVIDIA hardware and Windows 7.

Restore missing or distorted audio

Audio troubleshooting starts with the selected output and Windows format, not with buying a new headset or sound card.

  1. Check DOOM’s mixer. Open Settings → Audio and confirm the relevant sliders are audible. Bethesda’s guidance says to ensure the bars are set to 100 percent while testing. If one category is silent, correct that level before changing Windows.
  2. Test another output device. If you are using headphones, connect or select speakers temporarily; if you are using speakers, test headphones. This isolates a game mix problem from a particular jack, wireless device or headset.
  3. Select the intended Windows playback device. Open Windows playback devices, enable the speakers or headphones you want to use, and set that device as the default. In current Windows versions, you can reach the classic list through Settings → System → Sound → More sound settings → Playback; older versions expose it through the Sound control-panel applet.
  4. Set a standard default format. In the device’s Properties, open the Advanced tab and select 16 bit, 48,000 Hz as the default format. Apply the change, use the device’s test control, and then start DOOM. Bethesda recommends leaving the Playback tab open while launching so you can watch whether the device’s level meter moves. A moving meter with no audible output points toward the physical output, mute state or connection; no movement points toward selection or application routing.
  5. Disconnect unnecessary peripherals. Unplug or disable extra USB audio devices, controllers with audio functions and other peripherals, then test with only the intended output connected. Reconnect them one at a time after audio works.
  6. Close other programs. Exit applications that can take exclusive control of audio or install virtual audio routing, then launch DOOM again. This removes competing software from the test.
  7. Update the audio driver. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, select the relevant device, and use the driver-update option. Restart Windows after installation and repeat the playback-device test.
  8. Consider DirectX repair. Bethesda lists DirectX reinstallation as a possible audio troubleshooting step when the earlier checks do not restore sound. Use the installer supplied by the game or Microsoft and restart before testing again.

Fix fast or high-pitched sound

Unusually fast voices or a high pitch often indicate a mismatch in the Windows playback format. Open the intended device’s Advanced properties and change the format. Bethesda’s example changes 24-bit, 48 kHz to 16-bit, 48 kHz. Apply it, test the device, and launch DOOM. If the symptom remains, try the other available sample frequencies one at a time, testing after each change. Keep the setting that produces normal speed and pitch rather than assuming the highest bit depth is best for this game.

When testing, distinguish a game-wide problem from an output-specific one. If speakers work but headphones do not, keep the working device selected while checking the headphone format, connection, and driver. If the Playback meter moves for DOOM but you hear nothing, inspect mute controls, the physical connection, and the selected jack before changing unrelated game settings.

Switching OpenGL and Vulkan without losing track of the test

The graphics API selector is under Settings → Advanced Settings → Graphics API. Changing it restarts DOOM, so save or finish any activity before applying the change. Record which API, resolution and anti-aliasing value you used, then compare the two APIs under the same conditions. This avoids mistaking a simultaneous resolution change or background process for an API effect.

Use Vulkan only when the operating system, GPU and driver support it. If the game will not launch after the switch, use OpenGL as the recovery path. The older Windows 7, GTX 690 and NVIDIA 2 GB exceptions in Bethesda’s 2016 FAQ are warnings about particular configurations, not a blanket statement about every 2 GB card today.

When software checks do not solve the problem

Do not infer that a new GPU, RAM kit, drive, headset or adapter will fix DOOM solely because the game stutters or is silent. The Steam numbers establish a baseline requirement, not a repair recommendation. Consider hardware replacement only after you have confirmed that the PC is below those requirements or that a component fails independently in other games and applications. There is no general purchase that Bethesda’s troubleshooting sequence identifies as a fix.

For persistent launch crashes, gather the DxDiag file and explain whether the failure occurs before the menu, after changing the API, or after an update. For performance reports, include the GPU model, Windows version, selected API and the settings changed. For audio reports, name the selected playback device, its default format, whether its level meter moves, and whether speakers and headphones behave differently. This information lets Bethesda Support distinguish an installation, renderer, driver or output-device fault instead of repeating unrelated steps.

A compact decision checklist

  • Closes before the menu: requirements → GPU driver → Steam file verification → primary GPU assignment → DirectX and security checks → conservative settings → DxDiag support request.
  • Runs but stutters: requirements and driver → primary GPU → lower resolution and anti-aliasing → close background programs → compare Vulkan and OpenGL, reverting to OpenGL if needed.
  • No or distorted sound: DOOM’s Audio levels → alternate output device → Windows Playback selection → 16-bit, 48 kHz test → disconnect peripherals and close programs → audio driver and possible DirectX repair.
  • Sound is too fast or high-pitched: change the playback device’s default format, beginning with 16-bit, 48 kHz, then test other available frequencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if DOOM crashes on launch on PC?

Confirm the Steam minimum requirements, install the current NVIDIA or AMD graphics driver, verify the Steam files, assign DOOMx64.exe to the primary GPU, check DirectX and firewall or antivirus interference, and return graphics settings to a conservative baseline. If it still fails, send Bethesda Support a DxDiag report and describe when the crash occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if DOOM has low frame rates or stutters?

Check the requirements and GPU driver, make sure the high-performance GPU is selected, lower resolution and anti-aliasing under Settings → Video, and close unnecessary programs. Then compare OpenGL with Vulkan under Settings → Advanced Settings → Graphics API. Vulkan may help in some cases, but switch back to OpenGL if it causes instability or worse frame pacing.

Should I always use Vulkan instead of OpenGL?

No. Bethesda describes Vulkan as potentially helpful in some cases, not as universally faster or more compatible. Compare both APIs on the same scene with the same settings. Vulkan requires a restart when selected, and OpenGL is the fallback if Vulkan will not launch or renders incorrectly.

Why is DOOM silent even though Windows audio works?

Check Settings → Audio and make sure the levels are audible, then select the intended Windows playback device. Test speakers and headphones separately, set the device to 16-bit, 48,000 Hz, and watch its Playback level meter while launching DOOM. Disconnect extra audio peripherals, close competing programs, and update the audio driver if needed.

How do I fix fast or high-pitched DOOM audio?

Open the selected playback device’s Advanced properties and change its default format. Bethesda’s example changes 24-bit, 48 kHz to 16-bit, 48 kHz. Test the device and DOOM after each change; if necessary, try the other available sample frequencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does verifying Steam files delete my saves?

The verification step checks the installed game files and replaces missing or damaged files. It is Bethesda’s standard installation check. Allow it to finish before launching, and do not interrupt the process.

Is a new graphics card, headset, or sound card required?

Not as a general fix. First complete the software and settings checks. Consider a purchase only if the PC is below Steam’s published minimums or a component has an independently confirmed fault in other applications.

What older systems have documented Vulkan exceptions?

Bethesda’s July 2016 FAQ documents Vulkan launch failure on the GTX 690 and on NVIDIA 2 GB graphics cards running Windows 7. Those are historical, configuration-specific notes, not current driver advice or a blanket rule for every modern 2 GB GPU.

The Bottom Line

Match the fix to the symptom: verify files, drivers, GPU selection, DirectX, and security settings for launch crashes; reduce resolution and anti-aliasing and compare OpenGL with Vulkan for stutter; and correct the Windows playback device and 16-bit, 48 kHz format for audio faults. Test one change at a time, keep OpenGL as a fallback, and contact Bethesda Support with DxDiag details when the sequence does not resolve the problem.
