Slack connection failures are not automatically DNS failures. Start by checking Slack’s status page, then compare Slack on another network and test the hostnames Slack uses. If DNS lookups fail, flush the local cache and investigate the resolver. If lookups succeed but messages remain stale, the likely fault is a blocked WebSocket, proxy, firewall, VPN, SSL inspection, or the Slack app itself.
Identify the failure before changing DNS
Slack describes connection problems as connectivity, loading, server, WebSocket, or browser issues. Symptoms overlap, so none of these proves DNS is responsible:
- The desktop app says “Slack cannot connect” or remains stuck loading.
- A browser shows
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN, “server IP address could not be found,” or “no internet.” - Slack opens, but messages do not update, or files, images, huddles, or sign-in redirects fail.
- Only one workspace or Slack-related hostname fails.
- Slack works on cellular data or a hotspot but not on office Wi-Fi.
- The browser works while the desktop app fails, or only one device is affected.
Use this order: status check, cross-network test, DNS lookup, cache flush, resolver comparison, Slack’s connection test, then network and app repairs.
1. Check whether Slack is having an outage
Open slack-status.com. If Slack reports an incident, wait for the service to recover rather than changing DNS settings unnecessarily. If the status page is normal, continue with local testing.

Isolation tests
- Open Slack in a private or incognito browser window.
- Try a different supported, up-to-date browser.
- Use the web client when the desktop app fails, and the desktop app when the browser fails.
- Connect through a phone hotspot or cellular data.
- Ask whether coworkers on the same Wi-Fi or VPN are affected.
| Observed result | Leading explanation |
|---|---|
| Slack fails everywhere while Status reports an incident | Slack-side outage |
| Slack fails only on one Wi-Fi or office network | DNS, firewall, proxy, VPN, ISP, or network policy |
| Private browsing works | Browser extension or cached site data |
| Browser works but desktop app fails | App cache, app version, endpoint security, or app-specific proxy |
| Names resolve but messages do not update | WebSocket, proxy, firewall, or SSL inspection |
| Only one device fails | Local cache, resolver, VPN, security software, or app state |
These are diagnostic clues, not guarantees. Confirm the cause with the tests below.
2. Test Slack DNS resolution
Test both the main app hostname and Slack’s WebSocket hostnames. A successful lookup proves only that DNS returned an address; it does not prove that HTTPS or WebSockets are permitted.
Windows
Open Command Prompt and run:
nslookup app.slack.com
nslookup wss-primary.slack.com
nslookup wss-backup.slack.com
Normal output includes one or more IP addresses. NXDOMAIN, SERVFAIL, a timeout, or “DNS request timed out” indicates a resolver or network-path problem.
macOS
Open Terminal:
dig app.slack.com
dig wss-primary.slack.com
dig wss-backup.slack.com
For a shorter result, use nslookup app.slack.com.
Linux
On systems using systemd-resolved, run:
resolvectl query app.slack.com
resolvectl query wss-primary.slack.com
resolvectl query wss-backup.slack.com
resolvectl status
Resolver architecture differs by distribution; NetworkManager, dnsmasq, unbound, nscd, or another service may be in use.
3. Flush the local DNS cache safely
Flushing removes locally cached DNS answers. It does not change your DNS provider or repair an authoritative record, ISP resolver, firewall, proxy, or Slack outage. The next lookup may take slightly longer while the cache repopulates.

- Quit Slack.
- Run the platform command below.
- Restart Slack and retry the affected workspace.
- Repeat the DNS lookup if the problem remains.
Windows
ipconfig /flushdns
Microsoft documents this command in the ipconfig reference.
macOS
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
These commands generally display no success message. Enter an administrator password when prompted.
Linux with systemd-resolved
sudo resolvectl flush-caches
Ubuntu describes the command in its DNS troubleshooting guide; the resolvectl manual defines it as flushing locally maintained DNS resource-record caches. Do not assume this command applies to every Linux installation.
If multiple devices on the same network fail, restart the router only after checking Slack Status and local lookups. Repeatedly flushing DNS is not a useful general cure when the same query continues to fail.
4. Compare another DNS resolver only when evidence points to DNS
Changing resolvers is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed Slack fix. It is reasonable when Slack names fail to resolve, your configured resolver returns inconsistent answers, or Slack works immediately on a network with a different resolver.

Compare your normal resolver with a public one:
nslookup app.slack.com
nslookup app.slack.com 1.1.1.1
On macOS or Linux:
dig app.slack.com
dig @1.1.1.1 app.slack.com
Possible test resolvers include Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, Google Public DNS, and Quad9. A public resolver may bypass a faulty ISP resolver, but it cannot bypass a corporate firewall or proxy.
Employer-managed networks may require internal DNS for split-horizon names, filtering, logging, or security controls. Do not permanently override company DNS without authorization. Restore the original settings if the comparison does not help, and remember that resolver choice can change privacy, filtering, DNSSEC behavior, latency, and geographic routing.
Change DNS on macOS
- Open Apple menu → System Settings.
- Select Network, then the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet service.
- Click Details and select DNS.
- Add or remove servers, then click OK.
Apple documents this path at Change DNS settings on Mac.
5. Run Slack’s connection test
While signed in to the relevant workspace when required, open Slack’s connection test. Slack’s administrator guidance specifically calls out the WebSocket checks for Flannel Primary and Flannel Backup.
- DNS lookup fails: investigate the device, router, ISP, VPN, or corporate DNS.
- DNS succeeds but WebSockets fail: investigate firewall, proxy, VPN, SSL inspection, and allowlist rules.
- Primary fails but backup succeeds: check path-specific or allowlist rules.
- Both fail on one network but work elsewhere: the network path is the leading suspect.
- Everything passes: investigate app cache, version, browser extensions, endpoint security, or workspace/account issues.
6. Repair firewall, proxy, VPN, and SSL-inspection problems
Slack requires a persistent WebSocket connection over port 443. Ordinary websites can load successfully while a proxy or firewall still interrupts Slack’s live connection.

For network administrators
- Open the workspace-specific URL list at my.slack.com/help/urls from each relevant workspace or organization.
- Add all URLs shown there to the network allowlist; do not assume allowing only
slack.comis exhaustive. - Confirm that the proxy supports WebSockets over port 443.
- Review SSL/TLS decryption. Make it compatible with WebSockets or exempt the required Slack WebSocket domains.
- Inspect connections to
wss-primary.slack.com,wss-backup.slack.com, andwss-mobile.slack.com.
Slack documents these requirements in Manage Slack connection issues and Troubleshoot connection issues.

- Cellular works, Wi-Fi fails: compare the Wi-Fi DNS, filtering, and firewall behavior.
- Desktop and mobile both fail on one Wi-Fi: suspect the router, ISP DNS, filtering service, or network firewall.
- Only one device fails: focus on its cache, VPN, security software, app version, and browser state.
- Guest network: it may block persistent connections even when ordinary websites load.
- Captive portal: complete the browser sign-in page before testing Slack.
- Family-safety, ad-blocking, or secure-DNS products: check whether Slack-related domains are being filtered.
- IPv4 and IPv6: different protocol paths can create inconsistent results.
- Corporate split DNS: do not replace internal DNS casually with a public resolver.
When to contact IT, Slack Support, or your ISP

Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing DNS always fix Slack?
No. It can help when a resolver returns failures or stale answers, but it cannot repair a Slack outage, blocked WebSocket, proxy, firewall, VPN, or SSL-inspection problem.
Why does Slack work on my phone but not Wi-Fi?
Cellular data uses a different DNS resolver and network path. The Wi-Fi network may have faulty DNS, filtering, firewall rules, or blocked WebSockets.
Why can I browse the web but not receive Slack messages?
Slack’s live updates use persistent WebSockets over port 443. A network can allow ordinary HTTPS pages while interrupting WebSocket traffic.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is flushing DNS safe?
Generally yes. It clears local cached answers without changing your DNS provider. The cache will repopulate, and it will not fix upstream or policy failures.
Which Slack domains should IT allow?
Use the workspace-specific list at https://my.slack.com/help/urls. Slack’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies wss-primary.slack.com, wss-backup.slack.com, and wss-mobile.slack.com for WebSocket troubleshooting.
Why does only the desktop app fail?
The app may have stale cache, an outdated build, app-specific proxy settings, or endpoint-security interference even when the browser connection works.
