When a browser reports “This site can’t be reached,” “Can’t find the server,” or ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED, it usually could not turn the site’s hostname into the network address it needs. Start by checking the address and determining whether the failure affects one site, one device, or an entire network. That scope tells you whether to inspect the URL, your device, the shared network, or the website’s DNS records.
Do not assume that clearing your computer’s cache is the answer. A local cache is only one layer; a router, internet provider, or other recursive resolver can still hold an old negative answer, and the domain itself may have missing or incorrect records.

What a DNS error actually means
DNS, or the Domain Name System, matches a hostname such as example.com to the IP address used to reach the site. A DNS error occurs before the browser can establish a normal connection because that name lookup did not produce a usable address.
Google Chrome describes ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED this way: “The hostname (web address) doesn’t exist or now has a different IP address.” That wording covers more than a broken computer cache. The address may be misspelled, the domain may not publish the required record, a resolver may have cached a negative answer, or DNS traffic may be failing on the network.

DNS failure is also different from every other page-loading error. Chrome separates name-resolution failures from messages caused by a disconnected internet connection, a timeout, or a connection reset. The same troubleshooting step will not fix all of those conditions.
First, identify the size of the problem
Before changing settings, perform a few low-risk checks. They are isolation tests, not proof of a specific cause.
- Verify the exact address. Check every character in the domain and subdomain, including hyphens and the ending such as
.com,.org, or a country-code suffix. A wrong subdomain can fail even when the main site works. - Reload once. A temporary lookup or connection failure can clear on a second request. Repeatedly refreshing does not repair a missing DNS record.
- Open a second, known-working site. If several unrelated sites fail, investigate your connection or shared resolver. If only one domain fails, keep the domain name and its records in focus.
- Try the same site on another device using the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. This shows whether the issue follows the network or stays with one device.
- Try the affected device on a different network. A phone hotspot or another permitted connection can distinguish a local-device problem from a home, school, office, or ISP problem.
| Observed scope | What it suggests | Best next check |
|---|---|---|
| One domain fails on one device | A spelling mistake, local cache, browser setting, or device-specific resolver problem | Recheck the URL, test another browser or Incognito mode, then use device-specific checks |
| One domain fails on every device and network tested | A problem with that domain’s DNS records or an answer cached by multiple resolvers | Contact the site owner or DNS operator after confirming the spelling |
| Many domains fail on one device | A local connection, browser, security-software, or device resolver issue | Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet, restart the browser, and inspect local settings |
| Many domains fail on every device on one network | A router, ISP, shared resolver, or network-policy problem | Check the modem/router and contact the network administrator or ISP |
| The site works on another network but not yours | A network-side resolver or DNS-traffic problem | Ask the network administrator or ISP to investigate; a resolver comparison can be a diagnostic test |
These patterns are useful heuristics rather than guarantees. A single failed device can still be affected by a shared service, and a site owner can have a problem that appears intermittent.

Confirm the network link
- Make sure Wi-Fi is connected to the intended network, or that the Ethernet cable is seated and the adapter is enabled.
- If several sites fail, inspect the modem and router for an obvious loss of service. Reconnect or restart the existing equipment when that is normal for your network; do not reset it to factory defaults as a first step.
- On public Wi-Fi, open a new tab and complete the sign-in or terms-of-use portal. Until that portal is accepted, ordinary sites may not load even though the device shows a Wi-Fi connection.
Rule out browser-only interference
Chrome’s general loading guidance recommends updating and restarting the browser, trying an Incognito window, temporarily disabling extensions, checking firewall or antivirus interference, and clearing browser data when broader loading problems persist. Those are general page-loading checks, not guaranteed DNS repairs.
If the site loads in Incognito but not a normal window, an extension, stored site data, or a browser profile setting is a stronger suspect than the network’s DNS. Re-enable extensions one at a time after testing so you can identify the interfering one.
Flush a Windows DNS client cache
When the failure is isolated to a Windows device, Microsoft documents ipconfig /flushdns for a DNS client that has a cached negative response. Run it in Command Prompt, then retry the site.
- Open the Start menu and search for Command Prompt.
- Open it and enter
ipconfig /flushdns. - Wait for the confirmation that the DNS Resolver Cache was successfully flushed.
- Close and reopen the affected browser tab, then test the exact address again.
This command clears the Windows client cache. It is not a command for flushing a DNS server, router, ISP resolver, macOS device, phone, or tablet. Do not apply Windows instructions to another operating system; use that platform’s current documentation or the device administrator’s procedure instead.

A successful flush only proves that the local cache was cleared. It does not prove that the cached entry caused the error, and it cannot remove an answer held by an upstream recursive resolver. If the upstream resolver still has a negative result, the same error can return immediately.
Understand local and upstream DNS caches
A typical lookup can involve several layers: the browser, the operating system, a home or office router, the internet provider’s recursive resolver, and authoritative DNS servers for the domain. Clearing one layer does not clear the others.
Cloudflare’s DNS guidance specifically notes that flushing the local cache affects only the device. An upstream resolver may still retain a negative response, such as a conclusion that a name does not exist. This is why a site can continue to fail after a local flush, or work on one network while failing on another.
Missing or incorrect authoritative records are a separate case. If the domain owner has not published the required record, no client-side cache operation can create it. The owner or DNS host must correct the records.
Use a different resolver only as a diagnostic test
Changing the DNS resolver can help determine whether your normal resolver is unreachable, returning a stale negative answer, or being blocked. It is not a guaranteed repair, and it should not be the first action on a managed work or school network.
Google’s Public DNS setup documentation advises recording the current DNS addresses and settings before making a change. Procedures differ by operating system, device model, and network configuration, so follow the instructions for the specific platform rather than copying a Windows, macOS, phone, or router procedure to another device.
- Write down the current DNS addresses and any automatic or manual setting before editing anything.
- Confirm that you are allowed to change DNS. On an employer-, school-, or hotel-managed network, ask the administrator instead of bypassing policy.
- Configure the alternative resolver using the operating system or router’s network settings for your device and version.
- Retry the same domain and compare the result with the original resolver.
- Restore the saved settings if the test makes no difference, breaks internal names, or conflicts with the network’s requirements.
Google’s troubleshooting material also describes checking whether DNS queries reach a resolver and whether DNS traffic is blocked or hijacked. A timeout or a visibly different result from a permitted comparison test is evidence for network-side investigation, not a reason to keep changing settings indefinitely.

Only one device still fails
After checking the URL, connection, browser, and (on Windows) the local cache, continue with device-specific support. Check local firewall or security software, confirm that the device is not using an unintended manual DNS address, and compare another browser. If the site works on a different network from the same device, return the investigation to the original network rather than repeatedly clearing the device cache.
Every device on one network fails
Check the router or modem’s connection status and whether the network’s DNS service is reachable. If permitted, a resolver comparison can show whether the normal resolver is the failing component. Contact the network administrator or ISP when several domains fail, DNS queries time out, or traffic appears blocked. Provide the affected domains, the time of failure, which devices are affected, and whether another network works.
One domain fails everywhere
Confirm the spelling and test both the main domain and the exact subdomain that failed. If the same name fails across multiple devices and networks, the site owner or DNS operator needs to verify that the required records exist and point to the intended addresses. A visitor cannot repair missing authoritative records locally.
The error appears on a managed network
Work, school, hotel, and public networks may intentionally control DNS, require a sign-in portal, or block certain queries. Do not substitute a public resolver to evade those controls. Give the administrator the precise browser message, the affected hostname, and the isolation results.
Do not confuse DNS errors with other Chrome messages
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED concerns the hostname-to-address lookup. Chrome also reports errors for a disconnected network, a request that times out, or a connection that is reset after resolution. If the message changes after you fix DNS, you have reached a different layer of the connection process and should follow the instructions for that new error rather than repeating DNS-cache steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLikewise, DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN is a DNS-looking message, but the official material used for this guide most directly defines ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED. Treat the exact code and wording as meaningful evidence; do not assume that every DNS-related code has an identical cause or remedy.
A practical decision sequence
- Read the exact browser message. Record the hostname and code, especially if it is
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED. - Check the address and reload once. Correct any spelling or subdomain error.
- Test another site. One-site failure and many-site failure lead to different branches.
- Test another device on the same network. This separates a device issue from a shared-network issue.
- Test another network when allowed. A working hotspot or alternate connection points back to the original network.
- Complete public Wi-Fi sign-in and check existing equipment. Reconnect or restart normal equipment if appropriate.
- Try browser isolation. Use Incognito, temporarily disable extensions, and check security software when the problem is browser-specific.
- Flush the Windows client cache only when the device and symptom fit. Use
ipconfig /flushdns; do not treat it as a universal DNS-server reset. - Compare resolver behavior only if needed. Save the original settings, respect managed-network policy, and use an approved alternative as a test.
- Escalate with evidence. Send the administrator, ISP, or site operator the exact hostname, error code, affected scope, networks tested, and the time the problem occurred.
How to interpret the results
Use the outcome of each comparison to choose the next step, not to declare a diagnosis too early. If another browser on the same device opens the site, focus on extensions, stored browser data, or security software. If every browser fails on that device but another device on the same Wi-Fi works, keep the investigation local to the affected device. If all devices on that Wi-Fi fail but a hotspot works, the home, office, hotel, or ISP network is the more useful point of contact.

If one hostname fails on several independent networks while unrelated sites open, check the exact subdomain again and report it to the site operator. If switching to an approved comparison resolver changes the result, save that observation for the network administrator; it does not establish that the comparison resolver should remain permanently configured. A resolver may be required to provide internal names, filtering, or other network functions.
When the error changes from a name-resolution message to a timeout or reset, note the change. It can mean the hostname now resolves and the remaining problem is at a later connection layer. Continue with the instructions for the new message instead of repeating the same DNS command.

A precise report shortens troubleshooting. Include the full hostname, not just the company or product name; the complete browser wording and code; the date and approximate time; and whether the main domain, a subdomain, or multiple domains are affected. State which devices and browsers you tested, whether they shared the same network, and whether the site worked on another permitted network.
Also list the safe steps already taken: checking the spelling, reloading, completing a Wi-Fi portal, restarting existing equipment, trying Incognito, flushing a Windows client cache, or performing an authorized resolver comparison. Do not claim that one of these steps fixed the root cause unless the administrator or site operator confirms it. Screenshots of the exact error can help, but remove passwords, tokens, and other private information.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly flush a local cache when every device on the network fails; that pattern points beyond one client.
- Do not factory-reset a router because one site has a name-resolution error. Preserve the current configuration unless the administrator directs otherwise.
- Do not assume that changing to a public resolver proves the website is healthy. It only compares lookup paths.
- Do not bypass work, school, hotel, or public-network controls by changing DNS without authorization.
- Do not describe a successful browser reload as proof that DNS was the root cause; transient network and browser failures can clear on their own.
- Do not buy a new router, cable, adapter, or “DNS repair” utility as a first response. The appropriate action depends on whether the failure is local, network-wide, or at the domain owner’s records.
When the website owner must act
If a correctly spelled hostname fails across devices and independent networks, the visitor has little left to repair locally. The domain owner or DNS operator should verify the authoritative zone, required records, and the intended addresses. Cloudflare’s general DNS guidance emphasizes checking the spelling and required records in this situation.
When you report the issue, include the exact hostname rather than only the site’s brand name, the browser’s full error wording, whether the main domain or a subdomain is affected, and the networks on which you tested it. That information helps the operator distinguish a record problem from a resolver or connectivity problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will flushing DNS always fix ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED?
No. On Windows, ipconfig /flushdns clears the local DNS client cache, including a cached negative response. An upstream resolver can still hold the same negative answer, or the domain’s authoritative records may be missing or incorrect.
Best Value
How can I tell whether the problem is my device or the network?
Try the site on another device using the same Wi-Fi, then try the affected device on another permitted network. If only one device fails, inspect its browser, security software, settings, and local cache. If every device fails on one network, contact the network administrator or ISP.
Should I change to Google Public DNS or another public resolver?
Only use a different resolver as an authorized diagnostic comparison. Record the existing DNS settings first, follow instructions for your device, and restore them if needed. Do not bypass work, school, hotel, or public-network policies.
Why does a site work on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi?
That pattern points toward the Wi-Fi network, its router, ISP, shared resolver, or DNS traffic policy rather than proving a specific cause. Record the comparison and ask the network administrator or ISP to investigate.
Can I fix a website’s missing DNS record from my computer?
No. If the hostname fails across independent devices and networks, the domain owner or DNS operator must verify and correct the authoritative records. Local cache commands cannot create a missing record.
Is DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN the same as ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED?
Both are DNS-related browser messages, but do not assume they have identical causes or remedies. Read the exact code and wording, then follow troubleshooting appropriate to that message.
The Bottom Line
Start with the URL, then isolate the failure by site, device, and network. Check connectivity and browser interference before using ipconfig /flushdns on a Windows client. Treat resolver changes as temporary, authorized tests, and escalate with precise evidence when the problem is shared by a network or belongs to the website’s DNS records.
