DLSS 5 is not available in Hogwarts Legacy yet. NVIDIA announced the game update for November 5, 2026, for GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW, and RTX Spark. Until that patch is installed, a setting labeled DLSS, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, or Super Resolution is not evidence that DLSS 5 is running.
There is no verified Hogwarts Legacy-specific fix for DLSS 5 ghosting, shimmering, or flickering before release. You can still isolate the rendering feature responsible for an artifact, determine whether it is temporal or ray-tracing-related, and collect the version and settings information needed for a useful bug report.

What the November 5, 2026 update changes
NVIDIA’s October 13, 2026 announcement says the Hogwarts Legacy update will add DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering on GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW, and RTX Spark. The same update is expected to bring the game’s other DLSS technologies to their newest versions. That means visual changes after November 5 may come from more than one component, so calling every artifact “DLSS 5 ghosting” can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
At the time of writing, the update date is still in the future. A preview driver, a newer Super Resolution model, or an existing Frame Generation option should not be described as DLSS 5. If your copy has not received the announced game update, there is no supported DLSS 5 setting to disable or repair.

NVIDIA’s announcement does not establish that buying an RTX 50 card will cure ghosting, shimmering, or flickering. Hardware eligibility and artifact resolution are separate questions.
DLSS 5 is not the same as the other DLSS controls
NVIDIA describes DLSS Neural Rendering as the final stage of the graphics pipeline. It starts from the engine’s rendered frame, geometry, textures, and lighting buffers, then adds lighting and material detail. NVIDIA’s wording is that “DLSS Neural Rendering becomes the final rendering stage of the graphics pipeline, infusing scenes with lifelike lighting and materials while ensuring the engine frame defines what must remain, and the artist directs what may change.”
That role differs from the controls that have appeared in games using earlier DLSS generations:

|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS Super Resolution | Reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. | Soft detail, crawling edges, texture shimmer, or trails behind moving objects. | Keep every other option unchanged, then disable Super Resolution or switch to the game’s native-resolution option. |
| Frame Generation | Creates additional frames between rendered frames. | Motion-specific warping, double edges, or instability that is visible while turning the camera but not in a paused image. | Turn Frame Generation off while retaining the same resolution and ray-tracing settings. |
| Ray Reconstruction | Processes ray-traced lighting information to reconstruct a cleaner result. | Flicker or strobing in reflections, glossy highlights, and other specular regions. | If the control is available, compare it on and off with ray tracing still enabled. |
| Ray tracing | Adds ray-traced effects such as reflections and lighting. | Flicker confined to reflections or shiny surfaces, often changing as the camera moves. | Disable ray tracing temporarily. If the symptom disappears, the affected effect is part of the ray-traced path rather than proof of a DLSS 5 fault. |
| DLSS 5 Neural Rendering | Announced final-stage lighting and material enhancement; not yet available in Hogwarts Legacy before the November 5 patch. | No verified Hogwarts Legacy-specific symptom profile or fix exists before release. | First verify that the November 5 update is installed and that the feature is actually exposed on your platform. |
The table is a troubleshooting model, not a promise that one switch will solve every case. Temporal reconstruction stages can interact, and a change that removes shimmer may reduce detail or performance.
Before changing settings, establish whether the problem is real and repeatable
Ghosting, shimmering, and flickering are easiest to misdiagnose when the camera, weather, lighting, and character animation change between tests. Use one repeatable location and movement so that each comparison changes only one rendering feature.
Choose a repeatable test scene
- Load a save in an area containing the affected material: foliage, patterned stone, hair, chain links, a character outline, or a glossy reflection.
- Stand still and capture a screenshot or short recording.
- Move the camera through the same arc at the same approximate speed, then repeat the recording.
- Note whether the artifact is visible in the still image, only during movement, or in both.
A mark that exists in a still frame is different from a trail that appears only after movement. A reflection that flashes while turning the camera points to a different test than a character silhouette that leaves a persistent after-image.
Record the configuration
Write down the GPU or streaming platform, graphics-driver version, Hogwarts Legacy version, display resolution, upscaling mode and quality setting, Frame Generation state, Ray Reconstruction state, ray-tracing state, and whether the symptom appears in motion or at rest. Also record the location and camera movement used for the comparison. This prevents a later change from being mistaken for a solution and gives support staff enough context to reproduce the scene.

Step-by-step diagnostic sequence
Run these tests in order. Change one feature at a time and return to the same scene after each change. The sequence identifies likely causes; it is not an official Hogwarts Legacy DLSS 5 patch or guarantee.
1. Verify the game update and active feature
- Update Hogwarts Legacy through your platform’s normal game-update mechanism.
- Open the game’s Settings menu and inspect the Graphics or Display options. Menu labels can vary by platform and build.
- Check the installed game version shown by the launcher or platform, and check the installed NVIDIA driver version if you are playing locally.
- Do not infer DLSS 5 from a generic “DLSS” label. Identify whether the available controls are Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, ray tracing, or a newly exposed Neural Rendering option.
If the November 5, 2026 update has not installed, stop treating the symptom as a DLSS 5 issue. Continue with the feature-by-feature tests below only to diagnose the DLSS technologies that are actually present.
2. Test Super Resolution by itself
- Leave Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, ray tracing, resolution, and all other options unchanged.
- Disable Super Resolution, or select the game’s native-resolution path if that is the available alternative.
- Return to the recorded scene and repeat the still-frame and camera-motion tests.
- Compare edge stability, fine textures, and moving characters with the baseline.
If the trails or crawling detail disappear, Super Resolution is involved in the symptom. That does not prove the underlying game asset is correct when Super Resolution is disabled; native rendering may simply avoid the temporal reconstruction step. If image quality or frame rate becomes unacceptable, record the trade-off rather than declaring the problem fixed.
3. Test Frame Generation separately
- Restore the baseline Super Resolution setting.
- Turn Frame Generation off without changing resolution, ray tracing, or Ray Reconstruction.
- Repeat the same camera movement and inspect moving characters, thin geometry, and UI elements.
- Compare a paused image with the moving recording.
A symptom that exists only during generated motion is a reason to keep Frame Generation disabled while you test the other stages. Turning it off does not repair a static shimmer that is already visible in a still frame, and no Hogwarts Legacy-specific success rate has been established for this change.
4. Test Ray Reconstruction when the artifact is in ray-traced highlights
If the flicker is limited to ray-traced reflections, wet surfaces, polished objects, or bright specular highlights, test Ray Reconstruction as a diagnostic option where Hogwarts Legacy exposes it:
- Keep ray tracing enabled so the affected path remains active.
- Compare Ray Reconstruction on and off in the same scene and camera sweep.
- Watch the reflection or highlight itself, not just the overall image.
- Record whether the change reduces strobing, introduces softness, or has no visible effect.
In a July 2026 NVIDIA Developer Forum discussion, a participant explained that Ray Reconstruction can stabilize some strobing from aliased specular highlights and alleviate some ghosting that Super Resolution alone cannot manage. That is a general technical observation, not a Hogwarts Legacy or DLSS 5 guarantee. If your artifact is character ghosting with no ray-traced reflection involved, this test may be irrelevant.
5. Disable ray tracing as a classification test
- Restore the baseline DLSS controls.
- Disable ray tracing, leaving Super Resolution and Frame Generation unchanged.
- Repeat the identical camera movement.
If the flicker vanishes only when ray tracing is disabled, you have isolated the affected rendering path more narrowly. The result does not identify whether the cause is Ray Reconstruction, a particular reflection effect, temporal accumulation, or the game’s ray-tracing implementation. It does tell you that changing a non-ray-traced DLSS control alone is unlikely to address that particular symptom.

6. Compare still images with motion recordings
Use the two forms of evidence together:
- Still image affected: inspect resolution reconstruction, texture filtering, material or lighting data, and static ray-traced errors.
- Only motion affected: prioritize temporal accumulation, Super Resolution history, Frame Generation, and camera-speed dependence.
- Only reflections or highlights affected: prioritize ray tracing and Ray Reconstruction.
- Character-shaped trails: compare Frame Generation and Super Resolution independently; a single combined toggle test cannot distinguish them.
These categories are practical hypotheses. They should guide controlled comparisons, not be presented as confirmed diagnoses.

How to interpret common Hogwarts Legacy symptoms
Character ghosting
Character ghosting appears as a translucent trail or repeated outline after a moving person. Reproduce it with a slow camera pan and with a character crossing the frame. Disable Frame Generation first, then test Super Resolution independently. If the trail remains in a paused screenshot, investigate Super Resolution or the underlying render; if it appears only in motion, temporal processing is more likely to be involved.
A TechRadar reviewer testing DLSS 4.5 reported noticeable artifacts and ghosting around characters in Hogwarts Legacy and said their settings adjustments did not resolve it. That account concerns an earlier DLSS configuration and one reviewer’s system; it cannot establish that DLSS 5 causes the same artifact or that the November update will reproduce it.
Texture shimmering
Shimmering looks like fine texture detail crawling, sparkling, or changing as the camera moves. Test a patterned surface, foliage, or distant geometry from a fixed location. Compare Super Resolution on and off while preserving every other setting. Also check whether the effect remains at rest. A reduction in shimmer may come with softer detail, so judge both stability and clarity at the same output resolution.
Flickering reflections and highlights
Flicker confined to mirrors, water, wet floors, metal, or bright edges deserves a ray-tracing comparison. Test Ray Reconstruction where available, then disable ray tracing as a classification step. If neither change affects the artifact, capture the exact surface, lighting condition, and camera motion; a broad claim that “DLSS is flickering” is not specific enough for troubleshooting.
Image instability after a driver or game update
Record the versions before changing settings. The November update is expected to update several DLSS technologies at once, so a visual difference after installation may not come exclusively from Neural Rendering. Compare the same scene before and after the update only when the resolution, quality mode, Frame Generation state, Ray Reconstruction state, ray tracing state, and display mode are matched.

Do not replace model DLLs as a routine fix
NVIDIA’s DLSS Research material warns that research models are not fully validated and may contain regressions. Manually swapping model or DLL files can create a new variable, break the game’s expected version pairing, or make a later diagnosis impossible. It is not a supported, guaranteed consumer remedy for Hogwarts Legacy artifacts.

Do not call an earlier DLSS report proof of a DLSS 5 defect
Reports from DLSS 4 or DLSS 4.5 can show that similar visual complaints have occurred, but they do not identify the cause of a future DLSS 5 implementation. Keep the generation, game build, driver, GPU, and settings attached to every observation.
Do not buy hardware expecting a rendering fix
NVIDIA lists RTX 50 Series as one supported local platform for the announced update, but no evidence establishes that purchasing a new GPU corrects ghosting, shimmering, or flickering. GeForce NOW access and a different monitor likewise do not constitute a fix for a rendering behavior that has not been diagnosed.
What to include in a useful bug report
If the artifact remains after the update and controlled tests, provide a reproducible report rather than only saying “DLSS looks bad.” Include:
- Platform: local RTX 50 Series system, GeForce NOW, or RTX Spark.
- GPU model where applicable, driver version, and Hogwarts Legacy build.
- Output resolution, display mode, and Super Resolution mode.
- Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction states.
- Ray-tracing state and the specific effect showing the artifact.
- A still screenshot and a short recording of the same camera movement.
- The location, weather or lighting conditions, and steps needed to reproduce the issue.
- Whether disabling each tested feature changed the result.
This information separates a static material problem from temporal instability and distinguishes a ray-traced reflection issue from character ghosting.
What is known—and what is not—about a DLSS 5 fix
Known: NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for Hogwarts Legacy on November 5, 2026, with support listed for GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW, and RTX Spark. Known: Neural Rendering is described as a final graphics-pipeline stage, while Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction perform different jobs. Known: NVIDIA’s announcement also says the game’s other DLSS technologies will be upgraded.
Not established before release: a Hogwarts Legacy-specific cause for ghosting, shimmering, or flickering attributed to DLSS 5; a guaranteed setting combination that removes those artifacts; a measured comparison of the game with each feature enabled and disabled; or a verified patch that fixes a DLSS 5 defect. Treat every pre-release workaround as a diagnostic experiment until the update is installed and the same artifact can be reproduced on the resulting build.
