A DLL error does not automatically mean Windows itself is broken. First determine whether the message appears in one application or across Windows, and whether it started after an app installation, a Windows update, or another compatibility change. Then use the narrowest supported repair: repair the affected app, troubleshoot compatibility, repair Windows components with DISM followed by SFC, or use Windows 11’s recovery reinstall when system-level repair is still needed.
This order protects app data and avoids the risky practice of downloading an arbitrary DLL and copying it over a protected Windows file. It also prevents a common mistake: running system-wide repairs for an application that simply has a damaged installation or an unsupported dependency.

Start by identifying what is actually failing
Write down the exact DLL filename, the complete error text, and the application that displays it. A message naming a DLL only tells you that a component could not be loaded or used; it does not establish whether the file belongs to Windows, the application, or a runtime dependency. The repair path depends on the scope of the failure.

Note whether the error appears at startup, when opening a particular feature, or only after a specific file is opened. Record the app version and your Windows 11 edition if you know it. These details help the publisher identify a missing dependency and help you avoid installing a package for the wrong architecture or release.

If only one app fails
When one program crashes while the rest of Windows works normally, begin with that program’s own installer, repair feature, or support documentation. Microsoft’s Windows repair options are not available for every app, and an app-specific dependency may require the publisher’s installer rather than a Windows component repair. Use Microsoft’s app-repair guidance for the Windows Settings steps.
If several apps or Windows features fail
Multiple unrelated programs reporting missing or damaged system files, or Windows features crashing with DLL messages, justify checking protected Windows components. In that case, use the DISM-then-SFC sequence described below rather than trying to replace individual files. A broad pattern is more useful evidence of an image or protected-file problem than one isolated application error.
Check when the problem began
- If the failure began immediately after installing or updating an app, repair or reinstall that app first.
- If an older program stopped working after a Windows change, run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- If the issue affects Windows components or several applications, check the Windows image and protected files with DISM and SFC.
- If the same app works on another supported PC but not after a Windows update on yours, check the publisher’s compatibility notes before changing system files.
Restart Windows once before beginning the longer repairs. This clears a one-time loading problem and gives you a clean test for the same error; if it returns, continue with the path that matches its scope. Do not treat a successful restart as proof that a damaged DLL has been repaired.

Repair or reset the affected app
Windows 11 can repair some installed apps without removing them. The option is app-dependent, so its absence is not itself an error.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program that displays the DLL message, select its More menu (the three-dot button), and choose Advanced options.
- Under the app’s reset section, select Repair if it is offered.
- Launch the app again and reproduce the operation that previously failed.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not resolve the crash, return to the same page and choose Reset if available.
Repair is the lower-impact choice. Reset can change or remove the app’s stored data and settings, so use it only after checking what that particular app says will happen. If neither option is present, use the application’s official installer or support instructions; do not substitute a DLL downloaded from an unrelated website.
Before selecting Reset, back up settings, profiles, templates, or locally stored projects if the application provides an export option. A reset may return the app to first-run defaults even when personal files elsewhere on the PC are unaffected. If the app uses cloud synchronization, confirm that the latest data has finished syncing.
Run the compatibility troubleshooter for older software
An older desktop program can stop loading after a Windows update or another change in operating-system security, architecture, or system requirements. That is a compatibility problem, not proof that a Windows DLL is corrupted. Microsoft documents the supported tool in Make older apps or programs compatible with the latest version of Windows.

- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Locate Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow its prompts, selecting the affected program and the symptoms that best describe the failure.
- Test the program using the compatibility settings the wizard applies.
Compatibility settings cannot repair every missing dependency. If the program still reports a DLL error, use the publisher’s current installer or support guidance and verify that the software supports your Windows 11 architecture and system requirements. An old 32-bit application and a 64-bit-only dependency, for example, may require a publisher-provided build rather than a system-file replacement.
Repair Windows components with DISM, then SFC
Use this path when the symptoms suggest damaged Windows components or protected system files, rather than a single application installation. Microsoft’s documented order is important: run DISM before System File Checker. Microsoft Support states, “You should run DISM prior to running the System File Checker.” DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC relies on; SFC then scans protected files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy when possible.
Prepare an elevated Command Prompt
- Save open work and connect the PC to reliable power.
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Keep the window open for the entire scan. Do not close it while a command is still working.
Run DISM first
At the administrator prompt, enter this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Press Enter and allow the operation to complete. Microsoft says DISM normally obtains required repair files through Windows Update, so an internet connection and a functioning update source are important. Progress may pause for a while; wait for the command to report completion rather than interrupting it. The command targets the running Windows installation through /Online; it is not a request to repair one application’s private folder.
Run System File Checker second
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the Command Prompt open until verification reaches 100 percent. Microsoft describes this operation as scanning all protected system files and replacing corrupted files with a cached copy when possible. Restart Windows after the command has completed, then test the application or Windows feature that produced the DLL error.
When DISM cannot obtain source files
If the Windows Update client itself is unavailable or damaged, DISM can use another valid Windows source. Microsoft describes using a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on a network share or removable media. This is an advanced administrator procedure: the source must match the Windows installation, and the correct source path and edition matter. A USB flash drive is only a possible way to hold that known-good source; Microsoft does not establish a universal capacity requirement for it. Do not point DISM at a random DLL collection.
Keep a note of the exact DISM result if it fails. A source error is different from evidence that a particular DLL should be downloaded. Resolve the source problem with Microsoft’s documented procedure, or obtain help from an administrator who can verify the Windows build and repair media.

Use Windows 11’s recovery reinstall when component repair is not enough
Supported Windows 11 systems may offer a reinstall that repairs the current installation without the destructive effects of a clean install. Microsoft describes this option in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while the reinstall runs.
Microsoft says this process reinstalls the same Windows version and repairs system files and components while preserving installed apps, personal files, and settings. The entry is not present on every Windows 11 configuration. If you do not see it, do not infer that the PC is damaged; continue with the supported app or component-repair paths and consult Microsoft’s current recovery guidance for the edition you use.
Although Microsoft says the reinstall preserves apps, files, and settings, save important work before starting any operating-system repair. Keep the device connected throughout, and do not force a shutdown while Windows is reinstalling its current version.
Choose the remedy by scope, risk, and repair source
| Remedy | Best fit | Effect on app data | Repair source or requirement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart | One-time loading failure | None expected | A normal Windows restart | Does not repair damaged files |
| Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Advanced options > Repair | One app fails | Lower-impact app repair | The app must expose Repair | Not offered for every app |
| App Reset | Repair is unavailable or ineffective | May change or remove app data and settings | The app must expose Reset; check its documentation | Not a Windows-wide repair |
| Program Compatibility Troubleshooter | Older software broke after a Windows change | Targets compatibility settings | Windows 11 Settings troubleshooter | Cannot supply an unknown application dependency |
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth followed by sfc /scannow |
Windows image or protected system files may be damaged | Does not reset an app’s own data | DISM normally uses Windows Update; an alternate matching source may be needed | Does not fix every app crash |
| Recovery reinstall: Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now | Supported Windows 11 installation still has component problems | Microsoft says apps, files, and settings are preserved | Power and internet connection; option availability varies | Reinstalls the same Windows version, not an arbitrary upgrade |
The table’s key distinction is scope. App Repair and Reset change one program; compatibility troubleshooting changes how older software runs; DISM and SFC repair Windows image and protected-file integrity; recovery reinstall refreshes the current Windows installation. Moving to a broader remedy increases the number of components affected, so use the narrowest option that fits the evidence.
Handle application DLL messages safely
A DLL named in an application’s error can be part of that application or one of its runtime dependencies. The available evidence does not identify a particular Visual C++ Redistributable or other runtime for every filename, so installing a package at random can leave the problem unresolved or create a version mismatch.

Verify the exact program version, Windows architecture, and dependency named by the publisher before installing anything. If the app has an uninstall-and-reinstall process, follow that process rather than copying a single file into a system directory.
Why random DLL-download sites are a bad first fix
- The file may be the wrong build, architecture, or revision for your Windows installation.
- A similarly named DLL can belong to a different product and introduce another failure.
- Replacing a protected Windows DLL by hand can damage system integrity and complicate later servicing.
- A missing DLL may be only one symptom of a damaged installation; supplying the file does not repair the underlying component.
Microsoft’s supported guidance centers on app repair, DISM, and SFC rather than third-party DLL-download sites. Do not overwrite a protected system DLL as a first-line measure. If the publisher identifies a runtime package, download it only from the publisher or Microsoft location it specifies and install the version that matches the application.

Advanced manual replacement is a last resort
Microsoft’s system-file guidance includes advanced manual replacement instructions for situations in which automated repair cannot recover a file. If you follow that path, the replacement must come from a known-good copy that matches the Windows installation. “Known-good” does not mean a file found by searching the web; it means a validated source appropriate to the same Windows version and architecture. Because a wrong replacement can make Windows less stable, use the documented procedure only when you understand the source and recovery steps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure branches
The app has no Repair or Reset button
That is expected for some applications. Use the publisher’s installer or support process, and treat the issue as app-specific unless other Windows components are also failing. Do not force a Windows-wide repair solely because Settings lacks an app option.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair works, but the crash returns after an update
Record the update or app version that preceded the recurrence and check the publisher’s compatibility notes. Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for older software. If several unrelated programs now fail, move to DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly resetting one app.
DISM reports a source or update-service problem
Let the command finish and record its result. DISM normally uses Windows Update; if that client cannot supply files, use a matching running Windows installation or side-by-side source on approved network or removable media as described in Microsoft’s guidance. Do not substitute an arbitrary DLL file.
SFC does not remove the application crash
SFC addresses protected Windows system files. It cannot guarantee a repair for an application’s private files, incompatible code, or a missing runtime dependency. Return to the app-repair, publisher-installer, or compatibility path that matches the error’s scope.
The recovery reinstall option is missing
Microsoft makes the reinstall option available only on supported configurations. Its absence means that particular Settings path cannot be used on that installation; it does not prove that a DLL error has a single cause. Continue with the applicable repair path and use Microsoft’s current Windows recovery documentation for other supported options.

A practical order of operations
- Capture the exact DLL filename, application name, and the event that preceded the failure.
- Restart Windows and test once.
- If one app fails, try its Settings Repair, then Reset only after checking data consequences.
- If the app is older and the failure followed a Windows change, run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- If Windows components or multiple apps show file-integrity symptoms, open an administrator Command Prompt and run DISM, then SFC.
- If supported Windows 11 still reports component failures, use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now, keeping power and internet connected.
- If the message identifies an application dependency, follow the publisher’s verified installer or support instructions instead of downloading a standalone DLL.
Microsoft’s installation-error guidance also recommends DISM and SFC for relevant damaged or missing-file conditions; that recommendation supports the component-repair branch, not the assumption that every DLL error is caused by Windows Update. See Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation error guidance for that context.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will DISM and SFC fix every DLL error?
No. They repair the Windows image and protected Windows system files. They do not guarantee a fix for an app’s private files, an incompatible older program, or a missing runtime dependency. Use app repair, the publisher’s installer, or compatibility troubleshooting when the failure is limited to one program.
Should I download the missing DLL from the web?
Do not use an unknown DLL-download site as a first-line fix. The file may have the wrong build, architecture, or revision, and replacing a protected system DLL can damage Windows servicing. Use Microsoft’s DISM/SFC process for Windows files and the affected publisher’s official installer for application files.
What should I run first, DISM or SFC?
Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth first, let it finish, and then run sfc /scannow. Microsoft specifically recommends DISM before System File Checker because SFC relies on the Windows component store.
Why is Repair or Reset missing from Windows 11 Settings?
Those options are not available for every app. If the buttons are absent, follow the application publisher’s installer or support instructions. The missing buttons do not by themselves indicate that Windows needs a system-wide repair.
Will Reset delete my files?
Reset can change or remove an app’s stored data and settings. Check that app’s documentation and back up profiles, templates, projects, or other local data before using it. Reset affects the selected app; it is not a repair for Windows as a whole.
What if Windows says DISM cannot find source files?
DISM normally uses Windows Update. If that client is unavailable or damaged, Microsoft documents using a matching running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on a network share or removable media. The source must match the installed Windows version and edition; an arbitrary DLL file is not a valid source.
Does the Windows 11 recovery reinstall remove apps and personal files?
Microsoft says the supported Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now option reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving apps, personal files, and settings. It is available only on supported configurations. Keep power and internet connected, and back up important work before starting.
The Bottom Line
Match the repair to the scope of the failure: repair the app for an app-only crash, use compatibility troubleshooting for older software, and run DISM followed by sfc /scannow when Windows components or protected files appear damaged. If supported Windows 11 still has system-component problems, use the recovery reinstall option. Avoid downloading or manually replacing arbitrary DLLs; verify dependencies through the affected publisher or Microsoft’s documented procedures.
