How to Fix Distributed Systems After a Chaos Experiment Causes an Outage

Stop injecting the fault, prevent an automatic rerun, and treat the event as a normal production incident. Then contain the blast radius, restore the service using its known-good recovery procedure, and verify customer-facing health with the metrics you defined before the experiment. Aborting a chaos run only stops (or requests that the platform stop) the experiment; it does not prove that injected changes, queued work, network rules, processes, or data paths have been repaired.

The exact rollback depends on the platform, fault type, permissions, and architecture. Use the affected service’s runbook and the fault documentation rather than a universal command. The sequence below is a vendor-neutral recovery guide, with AWS Fault Injection Service (FIS) and Azure Chaos Studio used only as examples of platform features.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

First 15 minutes: a recovery checklist

  1. Stop further injection. Use the experiment’s Stop or Abort control, safety lever, or equivalent. Disable a scheduler, pipeline, or automation that could start another run.
  2. Declare or attach to an incident. Assign an incident commander, an operations lead, and a communications owner. Open a shared timeline immediately.
  3. Define the impact. Identify affected customers, regions, tenants, APIs, queues, data stores, and dependent services. Include shared infrastructure and any external system that may have received incorrect traffic or messages.
  4. Contain the blast radius. Isolate unhealthy instances, routes, accounts, regions, or test cohorts according to the service runbook. Preserve enough capacity to serve unaffected traffic.
  5. Identify the actual failure mode. Determine whether the injected condition is still present, whether cleanup ran, and whether a secondary failure persists after the fault is gone.
  6. Restore known-good behavior. Execute the normal rollback, failover, restart, configuration-revert, queue-replay, or data-recovery procedure that matches the failure. Do not invent a generic rollback sequence.
  7. Verify recovery. Check technical steady-state metrics, dependency health, data-path integrity, and a customer or business metric. The experiment status changing to completed or stopped is not recovery evidence.
  8. Keep the incident open until stable. Watch for recurrence through at least the service’s normal observation window, and communicate status and residual risk.

Stop the chaos experiment safely

Use the platform’s abort or safety control

Find the running experiment in the fault-injection platform and use its documented Stop, Abort, Cancel, or safety-lever action. Confirm that the control accepted the request and record the time, operator, experiment identifier, and displayed state. A stop request can be asynchronous; “stop requested” is not the same as “all actions ended.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AWS guidance describes stop conditions tied to CloudWatch alarms and safety levers that stop and roll back running experiments. If your experiment has such a guardrail, verify that the alarm actually entered the state that triggers it and that every action acknowledged the stop. Do not assume the same behavior for another fault, account, or platform version.

Block scheduled and automated starts

Pause the scheduler, CI/CD job, orchestration workflow, or policy that could launch the experiment again while responders are working. Check for retries and parallel experiments, including runs started by another account or region. Record the change so it can be reversed deliberately after the incident.

Confirm what the stop action did

Read the experiment event log and each action’s status. Look for explicit entries such as cleanup completed, rollback completed, process terminated, network rule removed, or resource restored. If the log is ambiguous, inspect the affected systems directly. A platform can stop issuing new fault actions while a previously applied change remains active.

  • Check instance, pod, node, and process state.
  • Check security-group, firewall, route, traffic-shaping, latency, and packet-loss changes.
  • Check CPU, memory, disk, connection, and quota modifications.
  • Check queue visibility, retry counts, dead-letter queues, and message duplication.
  • Check feature flags, configuration stores, credentials, and temporary permissions.
  • Check whether a fault touched shared infrastructure used by services outside the experiment.

Keep evidence before changing it: export the experiment log, alarm history, deployment and configuration events, and relevant service logs. This evidence is needed for both recovery decisions and the later postmortem.

Switch from experiment operation to incident response

Establish ownership and a shared timeline

Announce that the exercise exceeded its intended conditions and has become an incident. The incident commander makes scope and risk decisions; an operations lead performs technical changes; a communications owner updates support, product, and stakeholders. If your organization uses a different role model, preserve the same separation of decisions, execution, and communication.

Record timestamps in one timezone for:

  • experiment start, each fault action, alarm activation, and stop request;
  • first detected symptom and first confirmed customer impact;
  • containment actions, rollback attempts, failovers, and data repairs;
  • recovery milestones and the time monitoring returned to baseline.

Assess direct and cascading impact

Distributed failures often propagate through independent infrastructure, service, and network components. Map the affected request and data paths, not just the host where the fault was injected. Ask whether the experiment changed a shared load balancer, identity system, DNS, database, message broker, network segment, quota, or observability component.

Quantify impact by region, tenant, endpoint, operation, and time window. Identify failed writes, delayed jobs, duplicate messages, stale reads, dropped events, and requests that may have reached another service with invalid parameters. Preserve a sample of affected identifiers for later reconciliation.

Contain before attempting broad repair

Use the smallest reversible action that prevents additional harm. Examples include draining unhealthy instances, removing a route, disabling a feature path, reducing concurrency, isolating a region, or stopping consumers that would amplify bad messages. Follow the service’s approved runbook and change controls; emergency changes should still be logged and attributable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Containment is not a permanent fix. Set an owner and a review time for every temporary measure, because an abandoned throttle, failover, or disabled worker can create a second outage.

Restore the service to a known-good state

Determine whether the injected fault remains

Compare current system state with the last known-good configuration, not merely with the desired configuration in source control. Faults can persist in runtime state, kernel settings, network rules, queues, caches, or external control planes. Confirm the removal of the exact mechanism used by the experiment.

AWS Well-Architected reliability guidance states: “You must restore the workload and its underlying systems back to the original known-good state.” Apply that requirement to both the application and the infrastructure underneath it.

Use the recovery procedure for the real failure mode

Select the existing procedure that matches what failed:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Observed condition Recovery path to use Checks before declaring success
Instances or pods remain unhealthy Drain, replace, restart, or roll back through the service runbook New capacity passes readiness checks and serves representative traffic
Network or routing change persists Revert the documented route, firewall, proxy, or traffic-policy change Requests traverse the intended path from each affected region
Queue backlog or retry storm Apply the queue recovery procedure; throttle, replay, or quarantine messages as specified Age, depth, retry rate, and duplicate/error rates return to service targets
Configuration or feature state changed Restore the versioned known-good configuration or flag state Configuration hashes and runtime values match the approved baseline
Data writes or replication are impaired Use the database, storage, or replication recovery runbook Consistency, replication lag, and reconciliation checks pass
Dependency or shared resource is saturated Fail over, shed load, increase capacity, or repair the dependency as approved Dependency error and saturation signals remain within limits under normal traffic

If a rollback fails, stop repeating it blindly. Capture the error, preserve logs, and escalate to the owner of the affected layer. A failed experiment may reveal a separate defect that requires a different repair, such as clearing a stuck control-plane operation or rebuilding a damaged worker pool.

Protect data and side effects

Before replaying or retrying work, determine whether operations are idempotent. Replaying an unknown set of messages can create duplicate payments, notifications, writes, or provisioning actions. Use deduplication keys, reconciliation reports, and the service’s documented recovery tooling. If the experiment may have sent erroneous requests to another service, notify that owner and coordinate correction at the receiving system.

How to verify that customers actually recovered

Use predefined steady-state signals

Recovery should be judged against baselines and service objectives defined before the experiment. Check the affected service, its dependencies, and the complete request or data path. Useful signal groups include:

Signal group Examples What a passing result means
Availability and errors Successful request rate, HTTP or RPC errors, timeout rate, failed jobs Values return within the service’s approved objective for the observation window
Latency and saturation Percentile latency, CPU, memory, connection pools, queue age, throttling No hidden backlog or resource exhaustion is building behind a normal error rate
Dependency health Database errors, replication lag, broker health, DNS, identity, downstream response codes Dependencies are healthy from the affected regions and paths
Data integrity Replication status, reconciliation counts, missing or duplicate records, checksum or invariant checks Data paths are complete and consistent according to the system’s controls
User experience Successful login, checkout, search, upload, or another key journey A representative customer workflow completes, not just a synthetic health check
Business impact Orders accepted, jobs completed, messages delivered, or other service-specific outcome The customer or business result has recovered, not merely the infrastructure metric

Interpret sample thresholds correctly

AWS sample-result guidance for a CPU-stress example examines application latency, error indicators, and a user-experience metric before, during, and after the experiment. Any thresholds in that sample belong to that illustrative workload; they are not universal service-level objectives. Use your own baseline, alert thresholds, and recovery-time objective (RTO) and recovery-point objective (RPO). Microsoft defines RTO as the target time to restore service and RPO as the acceptable amount of data loss measured in time; values must be set for the specific service.

Run a deliberate observation window

Keep temporary containment and rollback changes visible while monitoring. Check at normal load and, where safe, at a controlled increase that could expose a latent queue or capacity problem. Declare recovery only when customer-facing metrics, dependency metrics, and data checks are healthy for the period specified in the runbook. Continue heightened monitoring after that point if delayed jobs, caches, replication, or batch processes can fail later.

Platform behavior: what to compare before the next run

Do not assume that two fault-injection tools, or two faults in the same tool, have identical cleanup guarantees. Evaluate the actual experiment definition and version against these axes:

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Stopping injection Can an authorized operator stop every running action, including actions already dispatched to targets?
Automatic rollback Does the stop control reverse the injected condition, or only stop additional actions?
Cleanup guarantee Is cleanup guaranteed for this exact fault, target type, and failure path? What happens if the control plane loses contact?
State and logs Where are experiment state, per-action events, alarm transitions, and cleanup results shown or exported?
Health guardrails Can a service-health alarm halt execution, and has that alarm path been tested outside production?
Permissions and scope Which identities can start, stop, or modify the experiment, and can the run cross accounts, regions, or shared resources?

AWS FIS safety levers and Azure Chaos Studio’s time-bounded faults illustrate different control patterns. Azure documentation advises checking cleanup behavior in the specific fault and action library. Treat both as platform-specific examples, not guarantees for every experiment.

After stabilization: run a blameless review

Capture the complete sequence

Write the review while logs and memories are fresh. Include the hypothesis, target selection, injected fault, start and stop times, guardrail configuration, alarm behavior, experiment state transitions, customer impact, responder actions, rollback attempts, and the point at which each recovery signal returned to baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate triggers from contributing conditions

The injected fault is the trigger, but the outage may have required other conditions: an unbounded target selector, a missing dependency limit, an untested cleanup path, insufficient capacity, weak alerting, an unsafe retry policy, or unclear ownership. Document which controls failed, which worked, and which were absent. Avoid assigning blame to an individual for following an approved experiment.

Turn findings into verified work

Every corrective action needs an owner, priority, due date, acceptance test, and a link to the relevant runbook or code change. Prioritize by resilience, security, and business impact. Verify the change in a representative environment, then perform a controlled test of the guardrail or recovery path. Do not close the incident because a ticket exists; close it when the risk is reduced and the evidence is recorded.

AWS recommends using prior post-incident analyses to shape future faults and preserving successful experiments as regression tests where appropriate. Microsoft describes a postmortem as a structured, blameless review that captures lessons and actionable improvements.

Preventing a repeat outage

Design the experiment

  • State a falsifiable hypothesis and define the steady-state and business baseline that would support or reject it.
  • Bound targets by account, region, tenant, service, percentage, and duration. Exclude shared infrastructure unless it is explicitly in scope.
  • List dependencies and side effects, including traffic, messages, credentials, quotas, and data mutations that could leave the tested system.
  • Start in a non-production environment that is similar enough to expose the same failure modes.

Build and test guardrails

  • Define stop conditions tied to customer-impact and safety signals, not only host metrics.
  • Define a rollback or post-action for each fault and document what is not automatically cleaned up.
  • Test that alarms activate, operators receive them, and the stop control can be used with the permissions available during an incident.
  • Test observability outside production: dashboards, logs, traces, experiment events, and audit records must be usable when the system is degraded.
  • Make the experiment time-bounded and fail closed when target discovery, authorization, or telemetry is unavailable.

Prepare people and operations

  • Notify operations, reliability, support, and affected service owners before the run; define the escalation channel and abort authority.
  • Start with the smallest practical target and increase scope only after each stage meets its exit criteria.
  • Keep a responder present throughout the run and monitor continuously rather than reviewing results afterward.
  • Practice the recovery procedure and verify that on-call staff can find it quickly. Microsoft Azure Well-Architected guidance notes that regular drills maintain readiness and ensure a plan can be executed effectively.

Close every run deliberately

  • Stop the experiment through the normal control, even if it appears to have completed successfully.
  • Verify cleanup and restore the workload and underlying systems to known-good state.
  • Check technical and customer-facing metrics for the full observation window.
  • Record anomalies, update the experiment definition, and preserve a validated run as a regression test when it provides continuing value.

A reusable incident runbook template

  1. Trigger: Record the alert, experiment identifier, affected service, and first customer symptom.
  2. Abort: Stop the run, disable reruns, confirm action states, and capture logs.
  3. Scope: List affected targets, regions, dependencies, data paths, and customer cohorts.
  4. Contain: Apply the least-disruptive reversible control and assign an owner for removal.
  5. Diagnose: Compare runtime state with the known-good baseline and identify persistent injected or secondary failures.
  6. Recover: Execute the architecture-specific rollback, failover, restart, replay, or reconciliation procedure.
  7. Validate: Check availability, latency, errors, saturation, dependencies, data integrity, and a representative user journey.
  8. Observe: Maintain the required stable window and watch for delayed effects.
  9. Communicate: Publish impact, current status, next decision point, and residual risk to stakeholders.
  10. Learn: Complete the blameless review, assign corrective work, and test the fixes.

Common recovery mistakes

“The experiment says stopped, so the outage is over”

Experiment state describes the control plane, not necessarily the workload. Inspect the target and its dependencies, then use service and customer metrics to prove recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Restart everything”

A broad restart can erase evidence, amplify retries, and overload a dependency. Prefer the smallest documented action that restores the failed layer, and preserve logs before destructive changes.

“Replay the queue immediately”

Replay can duplicate side effects or reintroduce malformed messages. Establish idempotency, quarantine unsafe records, and follow the queue owner’s recovery procedure.

“Use production thresholds from a sample guide”

Illustrative AWS values are not benchmarks. Set thresholds from your service’s baseline, objectives, and customer tolerance.

“Leave containment in place”

A disabled worker, reduced concurrency, or regional failover can become the next incident. Track every temporary control and remove it only after the original path is healthy and the change is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop a chaos experiment that is still running?

Use the platform’s documented Stop, Abort, Cancel, or safety-lever control, then disable schedulers and retries. Confirm per-action state and cleanup in the event log; the exact control and permissions depend on the platform and fault.

Does aborting a fault injection automatically repair the service?

No. Aborting may stop new actions or trigger a rollback, but injected runtime, network, configuration, queue, or data changes can persist. Inspect the workload and execute the architecture-specific recovery procedure.

What proves that the distributed system recovered?

Your predefined evidence: customer-facing success or business metrics, service errors and latency, dependency health, queue and data-path checks, and a stable observation window. A completed experiment status alone is insufficient.

Should the next experiment run in production?

Start in a representative non-production environment, verify observability and stop-condition activation, and expand scope only when the recovery and guardrails are proven. Production use requires bounded targets, an abort authority, tested rollback, and continuous monitoring.
