First find out where the distortion starts: compare the original audio, the encoder’s output or local recording, and the stream viewers hear. If distortion is already present before YouTube receives the signal, inspect the source and its route into the encoder. If the encoder output is clean but the viewer stream is not, check YouTube’s stream-health guidance and your upload connection. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo RTMP/RTMPS streams, but matching those settings will not fix distortion already present in the input.
Locate the first point where the audio sounds distorted
Do not start by replacing a microphone, mixer, interface, or cable. YouTube Help says poor sound may come from the audio and video sources routed to the encoder. Compare the signal at each stage you can access; this narrows the problem but does not, by itself, identify a failed component. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
- Listen to the source. Play the radio audio or recording feeding the stream. If it is already distorted, the fault precedes the encoder.
- Listen to the encoder output. Use the encoder’s monitoring or output recording, if available. If distortion is audible here, check the source and the routing into the encoder.
- Check a local archive. Compare an encoder-created recording with the live stream. A clean archive alongside distorted viewer audio points to a later delivery stage, but does not prove a particular network fault.
- Compare with the viewer stream. If the source, encoder output, and archive sound clean but viewers hear distortion, check the encoder’s errors, stream health, and outbound connection.
Keep the comparisons consistent: use the same passage and listen at a similar volume. Note which versions are clean and which are not before changing settings.
Check YouTube’s live audio settings
For stereo audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. Confirm what the encoder is actually sending, not just what its settings screen appears to show. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee against clipping or other distortion in the source. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Codec: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Sample rate: 44.1 kHz for stereo audio.
- Audio bitrate: 128 kbps for stereo audio.
If YouTube reports an incorrect audio sample rate or related ingest error, correct the encoder output to the stated format and check the error again. YouTube’s live-stream error messages include guidance on correcting sample rate and bitrate. YouTube says 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS; this typically does not apply to a stereo radio feed.
Inspect the encoder and audio route
When distortion is audible in the encoder output or local archive, focus on the path feeding the encoder rather than YouTube’s delivery settings. Check that the intended audio source is selected and routed to the encoder. Look for encoder errors and unusually high CPU load, then listen again after making one change at a time.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Confirm the encoder is receiving the intended source rather than an unintended input or duplicate route.
- Review encoder error messages and load indicators while the audio is running.
- If the cause remains unclear, try another encoder as an isolation test. A different result can help locate the problem, but changing encoders is not a guaranteed fix.
The available YouTube guidance does not prescribe a universal gain-staging recipe or a generally necessary hardware purchase. Buy or replace equipment only after testing identifies a specific source or component as the cause.
Test the stream before and during a broadcast
Test with audio and motion similar to the intended programme; a quiet or simple test may not expose a problem that occurs during normal playback. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview before going live and continuously monitoring audio, video, and stream health. Its live-streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.

- Make one change at a time, then repeat the same audio passage so you can tell whether the change helped.
Check upload capacity if the encoder signal is clean
If the encoder output and local archive are clean but the viewer stream is not, check whether your outbound connection can sustain the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth headroom; its stated planning calculation is primary stream bitrate + backup stream bitrate + 20% of the primary bitrate. This is a capacity recommendation, not evidence that bandwidth is the cause of every distorted stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Compare the total bitrate your encoder sends with the upload capacity available during the broadcast. If the connection cannot sustain the planned load, reduce the stream’s bitrate or address the connection before testing again. If the encoder output itself is distorted, fixing upload capacity will not repair that already-distorted signal.

| The original source is distorted | Focus on the source and its route into the encoder; do not treat YouTube settings as the first fix. |
| The source is clean, but encoder output or local archive is distorted | Inspect the selected audio source, routing, encoder errors, and CPU load. Try another encoder only as an isolation test. |
| The encoder output and archive are clean, but viewers hear distortion | Check YouTube stream health and errors, verify the audio format being sent, and assess whether upload capacity can sustain the total bitrate. |
| YouTube reports an audio sample-rate error | Set the encoder’s stereo output to 44.1 kHz and recheck the error message. |
| The cause is still unclear | Repeat a representative test, compare source, encoder output, archive, and viewer stream, and change only one variable at a time. |
