DISM error 0x80070057 means Windows rejected a parameter. The reliable manual sequence is to run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an elevated Command Prompt, let it finish, and then run sfc /scannow. If DISM reports that repair files cannot be found, provide a compatible Windows installation source with /Source; use /LimitAccess only when you want to stop DISM from consulting Windows Update.
What 0x80070057 means
The code commonly typed as 0X800070057 contains an extra zero. Microsoft documents the intended code as 0x80070057, identified as ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER. Microsoft’s description is “The parameter is incorrect.” In a DISM repair, that message means at least one argument, path, permission, source, or system condition was not acceptable to the servicing tool.

The number alone does not identify one single fault. Microsoft troubleshooting associates it with corrupted files, permission problems, and incorrect system configuration. A malformed command, a non-elevated console, an unhealthy Windows Update source, or repair media that does not match the installed Windows edition and build can all lead to a similar failure. Treat the command, elevation, update state, and repair source as separate checks rather than assuming that every occurrence has the same cause.
There is no authoritative success-rate statistic in Microsoft’s documentation. DISM can repair an image when the required files and permissions are available, but no command is a guaranteed fix for every installation.

Before you start
- Save open work. DISM may run for several minutes and can place a substantial load on the system.
- Use an account that can approve administrator prompts.
- Write down the complete command you intend to run. DISM switches must be spelled and spaced correctly.
- If you plan to use installation media, identify the installed Windows edition and build first so the source files can be matched as closely as possible.
- Keep the computer connected to the internet for the normal online repair. DISM normally obtains replacement files through Windows Update.
Run the standard online repair
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
Open Start and type Command Prompt. Select Run as administrator, then approve the User Account Control prompt. The window title or prompt should indicate that it has administrator rights. Running the same command in an ordinary console can produce permission-related failures even when the syntax is correct.
2. Start DISM
Enter this command exactly, then press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
/Online targets the Windows installation that is currently running. /Cleanup-Image tells DISM to service that system image, and /RestoreHealth asks it to detect and repair component-store corruption. Do not close the window while the operation is active.
3. Wait for completion
Microsoft notes that the operation may take several minutes. Progress can appear to pause for a long period; that alone is not proof that DISM has failed. Wait for a final completion or error message before starting another repair command. If the command returns a different error code, record it rather than treating it as another instance of 0x80070057.

4. Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can supply the component files that SFC needs to replace damaged protected system files. Let SFC reach 100 percent and read its final message. Running SFC first can leave it without a usable repair source, so repeat the sequence in the documented order if you began with SFC.
When DISM says the source files could not be found
An online repair normally uses Windows Update as its source. If Windows Update is unavailable, damaged, blocked, or unable to provide the required component, DISM can report that the source files could not be found. The remedy is to point DISM at another source containing compatible Windows files.
Use a local repair source
Microsoft documents this pattern:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to the Windows files you are actually using. The directory must contain appropriate repair content; an arbitrary folder with copied files is not enough. /Source tells DISM where to look. /LimitAccess prevents DISM from contacting Windows Update, which is useful when you deliberately want an offline-only repair or when Windows Update is known to be the failing source.
If you want DISM to try the supplied source and still be allowed to use Windows Update, omit /LimitAccess. That choice changes source availability, not the compatibility requirement: the files still have to correspond to the installed Windows edition and build closely enough for servicing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse installation media correctly
A Windows DVD, a mounted installation image, a network share, or a Windows installation USB drive can carry repair files. The carrier is not the source by itself. An empty USB drive, or a drive containing unrelated files, cannot repair the component store. The media must contain valid Windows installation files that match the system being repaired.
Before using removable media, connect it and note its drive letter. Confirm that the path you place after /Source: is the directory containing the Windows repair files, not merely the root of a blank or unrelated drive. If the media uses a WIM or ESD image, follow the source layout and image selection supported by that media; Microsoft’s guidance does not provide one universal index or build table for every release, so do not guess when editions or builds differ.
Source choices compared
| Source option | Internet needed during repair | Compatibility requirement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update (online repair) | Usually yes | Windows Update must be able to provide the components for the installed image | Fails when the update source is unhealthy or unavailable |
| Local installation files | No, if the files are complete and local | Edition and build should match the installed Windows | A random folder or incomplete copy is not a valid source |
| Network share | Network access to the share is required | The shared Windows files must be compatible | The path and permissions must remain available for the whole operation |
| DVD or mounted image | No, when all required files are present | Use media appropriate to the installed edition and build | Older or different media can be mismatched |
| USB installation drive | No, when used as a local source | It must contain matching Windows installation media | The USB hardware alone is not a repair source |
Fix the “parameter is incorrect” branch
Check the code and command spelling
Use 0x80070057, not the mistyped 0X800070057, when recording the error. More importantly, check the command itself. Each switch begins with a forward slash, switches are separated by spaces, and /RestoreHealth has no space inside it. Do not add punctuation at the end of the command or copy a line break into the middle of a path.
The baseline command is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
When adding a source, keep /Source: attached to its path, as in /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows. A misspelled directory, a missing colon, or a path that no longer exists can be interpreted as an invalid parameter or can lead to a separate source error.

Confirm elevation
Close the current console and reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator if you are unsure. Repairing the component store changes protected system data, so ordinary-user permissions may prevent the operation. A successful launch of Command Prompt does not prove that it is elevated; verify the administrator prompt before running DISM.
Separate source problems from syntax problems
First test the plain online command. If it runs but later reports missing source files, the command syntax is probably acceptable and the problem is source availability. If the command fails immediately with a parameter message, recheck every switch, space, and path before changing repair media. Add a local source only after you have a valid, compatible directory to point to.
Consider Windows Update health
Because online DISM repair normally relies on Windows Update, an unhealthy update system can prevent it from obtaining replacement components. In that situation, use compatible local repair files and the documented /Source syntax. Include /LimitAccess when Windows Update must not be consulted; omit it when you want DISM to retain Windows Update as an additional source.
Online repair versus local-source repair
| Decision point | Online repair | Local-source repair |
|---|---|---|
| Command | DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth |
The same command with a compatible /Source: path |
| Source availability | Windows Update must provide the needed files | You provide the files through a local path, share, disc, or installation USB |
| Internet access | Normally required | Not required if the complete source is local |
| Build and edition matching | Handled by the servicing and update infrastructure when available | You must select appropriate installation files yourself |
Effect of /LimitAccess |
It stops Windows Update from being used | It makes the supplied source the intended path without falling back to Windows Update |
Choose online repair first when Windows Update is functioning and you do not already have matching media. Choose local-source repair when DISM explicitly cannot find source files, when Windows Update is unhealthy, or when a known-good compatible source is available.

If you are servicing an offline image
Microsoft documents the same source concept for an offline image: supply a compatible repair location with /Source, and use /LimitAccess to prevent Windows Update from being consulted. The target and path details differ from an online repair, so do not blindly reuse the /Online command against an offline Windows folder. Identify the image you intend to service and use the syntax appropriate to that target.
Read the logs when another error appears
Do not assume every failed DISM run is 0x80070057. If the command returns another code, capture the complete message and review the DISM and CBS logs. Those records can distinguish a bad parameter from unavailable source content, permissions, or component corruption. The exact error code matters because applying a source-media fix to a syntax problem, or changing permissions when the source is mismatched, wastes time and can obscure the original cause.
Verify the result
Check DISM’s final status
Wait for DISM to report that the operation completed or to display a specific failure. A progress percentage by itself is not a result. If the operation completes successfully, proceed to SFC rather than rerunning DISM repeatedly.
Check SFC’s final message
Run sfc /scannow after DISM and let it finish. The final SFC message tells you whether protected files were repaired, whether no integrity violations were found, or whether some files could not be fixed. Use that message, together with the DISM code and logs, to decide whether further Windows servicing or a more targeted investigation is needed.

Recheck the four independent conditions: exact syntax, administrator elevation, Windows Update availability, and repair-source compatibility. If you used removable media, verify that it really contains Windows installation files for the installed edition and build. If you used a network share, confirm that the share remains reachable and that the elevated process can read it. If all four checks pass and DISM still fails, preserve the logs and the complete error text before trying a different repair path.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Running SFC first and assuming it supplies the component files that DISM normally provides.
- Typing the extra-zero form
0X800070057into a command or support request instead of recording the documented code0x80070057. - Launching Command Prompt without administrator rights.
- Using an empty USB stick as though the storage device itself were Windows repair media.
- Pointing
/Sourceat a folder from a different Windows edition or build without checking compatibility. - Adding
/LimitAccesswithout understanding that it disables Windows Update as a fallback source. - Closing the console because progress appears slow, before DISM prints a final status.
- Assuming a different DISM error is the same parameter problem and skipping the logs.
A practical decision path
- Correct the code in your notes to
0x80070057and copy the exact command you intend to run. - Open an elevated Command Prompt and run the plain online repair command.
- Wait for completion. If it succeeds, run
sfc /scannow. - If DISM says the source files cannot be found, obtain compatible Windows installation files and rerun with
/Source:. - Use
/LimitAccessonly when Windows Update should be excluded from source selection. - If another code appears, stop treating it as a generic parameter error and examine the DISM and CBS logs.
What to remember
0x80070057 is Microsoft’s invalid-parameter error, not proof of one particular hardware or software failure. The safest sequence is an elevated online DISM repair followed by SFC. Missing repair content calls for a compatible source; a DVD, network share, or USB drive is useful only when it carries the right Windows files. Exact syntax, administrator permissions, Windows Update condition, and source matching determine which repair branch is appropriate.
