Identify the failure before changing anything
Write down the exact message or code before you start troubleshooting. A screenshot or copied error text is useful because similar-looking failures can have completely different causes. Also note:

This distinction matters because a Destiny error code follows Bungie’s troubleshooting path, while a numeric or lettered code generated by Steam, Epic, Microsoft, Windows, or your graphics driver belongs with that platform’s support. Bungie’s disconnected-from-Destiny guidance also treats repeated, varying errors as a possible network-stability problem rather than proof that one game file is damaged.

Do not change several unrelated things at once. If you update a driver, reset a configuration file, clear a cache, and reinstall the game in one pass, you will not know which action helped or whether a new setting introduced another problem. Test after each meaningful step.
Run the low-risk checks first
1. Restart the game and the PC
Close Destiny 2 completely and launch it again. A one-off disconnect or failed session can clear after an application restart. If the launcher, Windows, or another program is behaving oddly, restart the computer before making file or driver changes. Make sure the game is not still running in the background in Task Manager before relaunching it.
2. Install Windows and graphics-driver updates
Use Windows Update and your GPU manufacturer’s official driver channel to install pending updates. This is particularly important for RUTABAGA, which Bungie associates with performance dropping below sustainable thresholds. Keep the test simple so you can tell whether the game itself is stable. You can re-enable an overlay or monitoring tool one at a time after the game works normally.
4. Check Bungie’s service and known-issues information
Before reinstalling anything, check the current known-issues and vital-information page. Bungie says the list is not comprehensive, but it can reveal a live issue affecting your hardware, update, or platform. If the service is experiencing an incident, local file changes will not resolve it. Note the date of any relevant notice because entries can be added, changed, or removed.
Use the exact code or symptom to choose a repair
MARMOT: verify or repair corrupted game files
Bungie defines MARMOT as corrupted game files. Start with the launcher’s file-verification tool rather than deleting folders manually. Verification compares the installed content with the launcher’s expected files and reacquires damaged or missing content; it does not reset your personal graphics or control preferences.
- Steam: Open your Library, right-click Destiny 2, choose Properties, open Installed Files (Bungie’s older documentation calls this Local Files), and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Epic Games: Open your Library, select the three-dot menu for Destiny 2, choose Manage, then Verify.
- Wait for the launcher to finish replacing or reacquiring damaged content. Do not interrupt the process, then relaunch the game.
If MARMOT returns after verification, Bungie lists reinstalling as an escalation. On Steam, persistent problems may also justify checking the health of the drive that stores the game. Use the MARMOT support page for the current escalation details. A verification failure by itself is not proof that the graphics card is defective; it points first to installed content or storage.
CHIVE: update or reinstall the graphics driver
CHIVE is associated with graphics-driver trouble. Install the latest driver for your GPU and restart Windows. If the error continues, Bungie recommends reinstalling the driver and running the launcher’s scan-and-repair or verification function. These are recommended troubleshooting steps while Bungie investigates reports; they are not a guarantee that every CHIVE occurrence has the same cause.

After the driver change, test with the game’s default graphics settings and without overlays or custom performance tweaks. If the game launches that way, add your changes back individually. If CHIVE appears only when a particular feature is enabled, record that detail for a Bungie report instead of assuming that a full game reinstall will address it. Follow the CHIVE instructions for any additional platform-specific scan or repair step.
RUTABAGA: address sustained performance drops
RUTABAGA concerns performance falling below sustainable thresholds rather than a single corrupt download. Close other applications, relaunch, and confirm that Windows and your GPU firmware or driver are current. Check that the computer meets the published PC requirements in Bungie’s PC and Steam guidance.
If the code appears only in demanding activities, reduce load-producing settings and retest while keeping background programs closed. Watch whether the failure follows a specific activity or occurs after the system has been running for a long time. Do not treat a hardware upgrade as the first response when the driver, firmware, running applications, and published requirements have not been checked. A stable result after closing background software indicates a competing-load problem worth documenting.

A damaged or incompatible configuration can prevent a normal launch even when the installed game files are intact. Bungie’s Steam guidance recommends deleting this file:

- Exit Destiny 2 and its launcher.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the path above, replacing
USER_NAMEwith your Windows account name. You can paste the path into the address bar and adjust the account name if needed. - Delete
CVARS.xml. Do not delete unrelated folders or files. - Start the game. It will create a fresh file with default settings.
This step resets custom graphics and control options stored in the file. It is therefore different from file verification: verification repairs installed game content, while deleting CVARS.xml replaces user configuration. Expect to set your preferences again. Use this step when the failure began after a settings change or when ordinary file verification did not alter a launch problem.
Steam download or installation trouble: clear the download cache
Clearing Steam’s download cache can help with certain launcher and installation conditions. Bungie mentions it for general Steam issues, Windows Defender false positives, and TERMITE situations. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads, choose Clear Download Cache, and sign in again if Steam requests it.

Cache clearing does not directly repair every crash. Use it when the symptom involves a stalled, incomplete, or repeatedly failing download, an installation that will not finish, or a launcher state associated with TERMITE. It may remove cached download data and require another sign-in, but it should not erase the installed game itself. TURTLE and other disconnect symptoms: troubleshoot the connection
For TURTLE or repeated disconnects, restart the game, use a wired connection if practical, and check for packet loss. A wired test is diagnostic: it helps distinguish a wireless stability issue from a problem that occurs on every connection. Clear the relevant platform’s download or web cache where Bungie recommends it, then follow the network steps on the TURTLE page and Bungie’s disconnected-from-Destiny guidance.
A series of different disconnect codes points more strongly to unstable connectivity than to one damaged game file. Record whether other devices on the same connection lose service at the same time. If the game works on a stable wired connection but not over Wi-Fi, continue with network troubleshooting instead of reinstalling the game.
Platform-generated errors
If the message clearly identifies Steam, Epic, Microsoft, Windows, or another platform component rather than a Destiny code, use that platform’s support route. Bungie separates platform errors from Destiny errors; applying a game-file fix to a platform authentication, account, launcher, or operating-system failure can waste time. Include the platform’s complete code and any launcher log or message when contacting its support team.
SteamOS and Proton launch failures
Destiny 2 is unsupported on SteamOS and Proton. Bungie directs players to supported Windows play and warns that attempts to bypass the incompatibility can result in a game ban. Verification and a CVARS reset solve different classes of problem: verification checks the game installation, while deleting CVARS.xml replaces user configuration. Driver work addresses the graphics software, and network checks address the path between your PC and Destiny services. 12th-generation Intel Iris integrated graphics in laptops
Bungie reports crashes in high-demand environments on laptops using 12th-generation Intel Iris integrated graphics. Where the laptop has a discrete GPU, set Windows Graphics Settings so Destiny 2 uses that discrete GPU. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add or browse to the game executable, choose Options, select the discrete/high-performance GPU, and save. Menu names can vary slightly by Windows version.

Steam frame hitches and performance drops
Bungie also reports investigating Steam frame hitches and performance drops since Update 9.7.0.2. If your symptom is stuttering rather than a launch failure, check whether this notice is still present before making invasive changes. A live investigation can explain a new problem that began immediately after an update. Record the update version, launcher, and activity where the hitch occurs so your report is actionable.
Because the list is explicitly targeted and incomplete, the absence of your symptom there does not prove that your installation is defective. Reinstall only after the code-specific checks, file verification, driver checks, and configuration reset appropriate to your symptom have failed. Reinstallation downloads the entire game again and can consume substantial time and bandwidth. It does not address an unsupported operating system, an unstable network, a platform authentication failure, or a driver problem by itself.

Before reinstalling, record the error code and confirm that the launcher itself is healthy. If MARMOT persists after verification, Bungie lists reinstalling as a valid next step. For other symptoms, reinstall only when the relevant Bungie page directs you there or when the installation is demonstrably incomplete. If the same error returns immediately after a fresh installation, stop repeating the download and escalate with the documented code and your test results.
Escalate with useful evidence
If the exact code remains after its documented steps, open the matching Bungie Help page and use the appropriate support forum or reporting route. Include:
- The exact code and full error text.
- Your launcher and Windows platform.
- When the issue began and whether it followed an update or settings change.
