First, verify the digits. The string 0x8007422 appears in Microsoft Q&A reports about Microsoft Store and Xbox downloads or sign-in, but Microsoft’s documented Windows Update code is 0x80070422—with an extra zero after 0x—and means that the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The correct fix depends on the exact code, the app showing it, and what operation failed. Record all three before changing anything.
What the two codes mean
These values are easy to confuse because they look nearly identical:

0x8007422 |
Microsoft Store and Xbox download or sign-in reports; also a Windows Update community question | No single authoritative Microsoft definition has been published for this exact seven-digit value. The same string is used in different community contexts. |
0x80070422 |
Windows Update | Microsoft Support defines it as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” |
A missing zero can send you down the wrong troubleshooting path. Do not assume that a Store error is a Windows Update-service error, or that a Windows Update failure is a Store-cache problem.

- Open the original error again. Copy the code, including every zero, and note capitalization and punctuation.
- Record the location. Was it Windows Update in Settings, Microsoft Store while downloading an app, Xbox while signing in or downloading, or an app that would not launch?
- Note the action that failed. Installation, update, sign-in, download, or launch points to different components.
- Write down your Windows edition and build. Select Settings > System > About. This information is important if you need support later.
If the screen actually shows 0x80070422, follow the Windows Update procedure first. If it shows 0x8007422 during a Store or Xbox operation, start with the Store procedure. If the code and symptom do not line up, complete only the branch that matches the failing component and then escalate with the recorded details.

Fix the Windows Update service (for 0x80070422 or a clearly Windows Update-related failure)
Microsoft’s documented repair is a reversible service-state change. You need an account with permission to change Windows services.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update.
- Double-click it to open Properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Check Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the PC.
- After signing in, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the service was already running and set to Automatic, do not repeatedly toggle it. Continue with the branch that matches the app producing the error. A service change does not repair a damaged Microsoft Store cache or an individual Store app.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache
Use this procedure when the error appears in Microsoft Store, or in an Xbox download flow that hands the transaction to Store components. Microsoft’s Store support instructions use the built-in wsreset.exe command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - A blank Command Prompt window opens. Do not close it manually; after roughly ten seconds it closes and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
- Try the download or update again.
The reset clears Store cache data; it does not remove your installed Windows apps. If no Store window opens, or the same message returns, proceed to the checks below rather than repeating the command indefinitely.

Check Windows updates, time and location
Store transactions depend on a current Windows installation and correct regional settings. Microsoft’s Store guidance recommends these checks after resetting the cache.
Install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to the Store and retry the original operation.
If Windows Update itself reports 0x80070422, complete the service procedure before trying the Store again.
Verify date, time and time zone
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone options where available, or correct them manually.
- Confirm the displayed date, time and time zone, then retry the Store operation.
Verify your region
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Check that Country or region reflects your actual location.
- Close and reopen Microsoft Store before testing again.
Repair, reset or reinstall the affected Store app
Use this branch when Store opens but one particular app fails to install, update or launch. The labels can vary slightly by Windows release, but the sequence is the same: repair first, reset second, reinstall last.
Sign in and reopen the app
- Open Microsoft Store and verify that you are signed in with the account that owns or obtained the app.
- Close the affected app and Microsoft Store.
- Reopen Store, open Library, and select Get updates to update Store apps.
- Retry the original action.
Repair without deleting app data
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows versions).
- Find the affected app, select its More menu (three dots), and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair if that button is available.
- Open the app and test it.
Repair attempts to correct the app while preserving its data. If there is no improvement, return to the same page.

Reset the app
- In the app’s Advanced options, select Reset.
- Read the warning: resetting can remove the app’s local data and sign-in state.
- Confirm the reset, then launch the app and sign in again if requested.
Reinstall as the final Store-app step
- Uninstall the affected app from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or its Start-menu context menu.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store, select Library, locate the app, and select Install (or search for it again).
- Retry the operation that originally failed.
Reinstallation can remove local settings or unsynchronized data. Confirm that important data is synchronized or backed up before choosing it.

Reports using 0x8007422 include Xbox sign-in and download failures. Start by identifying whether the transaction is actually handled by Microsoft Store. If Store is involved, run wsreset.exe, install pending Windows updates, verify time and region, and update Store through Library > Get updates. For a failing Xbox app itself, use the app’s Repair, then Reset, and finally reinstall sequence described above. Do not change the Windows Update service solely because an Xbox screen displays the ambiguous seven-digit code; use that service procedure when Windows Update is the component reporting the failure or when the exact code is 0x80070422.
Choose the least risky fix first
| Fix | Component | Effect and risk | Support status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set Windows Update to Automatic and start it | Windows Update | Changes one service state; reversible through Services | Documented by Microsoft for 0x80070422 |
wsreset.exe |
Microsoft Store cache | Clears cache; does not uninstall apps | Documented by Microsoft |
| Store Repair | One Store app | Attempts repair while retaining data | Microsoft Store-app guidance |
| Store Reset | One Store app | May remove local data and sign-in state | Microsoft Store-app guidance |
| Reinstall | One Store app | Removes and downloads the app again; local data may be lost | Microsoft Store-app guidance |
| Registry cleaners or unrelated hardware accessories | Not established | No evidence here that they address this code; deeper changes can create new problems | Not supported by the documented fixes |
If the error remains
The available Microsoft Q&A reports do not establish one universal cause for the exact 0x8007422 string. Escalate instead of applying unrelated system modifications when all of the following are true:
- You have confirmed every digit and captured the complete message.
- The Windows Update service is enabled and running when Windows Update is the failing component.
wsreset.exehas completed when Store is involved.- Windows and Store updates are installed, and time and region are correct.
- The affected app has been repaired, reset or reinstalled as appropriate.
Give Microsoft Support or the app publisher the exact code, a screenshot or transcription of the message, Windows edition and build, affected app, operation that failed, and the steps already completed. Mention whether the code was 0x8007422 or 0x80070422; that distinction determines which diagnosis is supported. A community answer that says the service is disabled may describe one Windows Update thread, but it is not a universal definition of the ambiguous seven-digit value.
Is it safe to follow these fixes?
Yes, the documented procedures are standard Windows recovery actions when applied to the matching component. Starting Windows Update changes its startup behavior but does not alter personal files. wsreset.exe resets Store cache rather than uninstalling applications. Repair is less disruptive than reset, while reset and reinstall can remove local app data. Close unsaved work, keep your account credentials available, and back up app data that is not synchronized before using those deeper app options.
