DayZ’s “Can’t compile ‘World’ script module” message is a wrapper, not a diagnosis. The actionable information is the compiler line beneath it: the named .c file, mod folder, function or variable, and line number. Capture that text first, then determine whether the failure disappears with every optional mod disabled. An unmodded launch that works points toward a mod, dependency, load order, or mod combination rather than an immediately broken base installation.

What the World script-module error actually means
DayZ uses Enforce Script files to build the game’s script modules during startup. When compilation stops, the launcher often presents the same high-level World-module heading for several unrelated failures. Treating that heading as the cause leads to unnecessary reinstalls and random file deletion.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe compiler’s first specific message is the useful diagnosis. It can identify a declaration that appears twice, a method that no longer exists in the class being extended, a variable that is missing, or a function duplicated by two loaded files. Those clues point to different repairs.
| Compiler clue | What it usually indicates | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
Duplicate DayZInfectedCommandAttack declaration |
A stray, stale, or duplicated script file is being loaded. | Check the named path and use the targeted root-file fallback only after backing it up. |
Override such as OnPartDismantledServer is missing from the base class |
A mod was built for a different game or framework API. | Update or reinstall that mod and every dependency it requires; verify the loaded game version. |
STATE_PLANTED or another variable is missing |
The mod expects a symbol supplied by another version or dependency. | Align versions and dependencies before changing unrelated files. |
| Duplicate global function | Two scripts define the same global name, often because of overlapping or incompatible mods. | Isolate the offending mod or mod pair by bisecting the load list. |
These are examples of distinct failure classes, not interchangeable error codes. The same World heading can therefore require a file cleanup in one case and a dependency correction in another.

Before changing anything: capture the evidence
Do not close the error before recording it. Take a screenshot and copy the complete text from the first compiler line through the file path and line number. The first named file is generally more useful than later cascade errors, which may simply be consequences of the initial failure.
- Record the exact
.cfilename and line number. - Write down the mod folder or workshop ID shown in the path.
- Note the function, class, variable, or duplicate declaration named by the compiler.
- Identify whether the failure is on a client launch, a dedicated-server startup, or both.
- For a server, preserve the complete
DayZServer_x64_*.RPTlog before restarting repeatedly.
Make a backup of any file you intend to remove or edit. A backup lets you reverse a targeted experiment and prevents a diagnostic step from becoming permanent data loss.

Step 1: test DayZ without optional mods
Disable optional client mods and start the base game, or start the server with its optional mod set removed. This is an isolation test, not a permanent configuration.
- Close DayZ and the launcher.
- Disable the optional mods that were active when the error appeared.
- Launch the unmodded game, or start the server using only its intended base configuration.
- Record whether it reaches the menu or completes server startup.
If the unmodded launch succeeds, the installation is less likely to be the immediate cause and the mod set becomes the focus. A DayZ troubleshooting report describes this exact pattern: the base game started, while the same setup failed when mods were enabled.
If the unmodded launch also fails, keep the complete compiler text and RPT evidence. Do not assume that deleting a random workshop folder will repair a failure that occurs with no optional scripts loaded; the named file and line still determine the next step.
Step 2: repair the specifically named workshop mod
When the compiler names one workshop mod, repair that copy before removing other content. Nitrado’s DayZ troubleshooting guide, published July 4, 2025, recommends correcting mod order and, if necessary, deleting the affected workshop folder and repairing the mod from the launcher.

- Use the compiler path or the mod ID to identify the affected package.
- Open the workshop content directory
workshop/content/221100. - Delete only the folder belonging to the named mod. Do not remove the entire
221100directory unless you have independently decided to rebuild every subscribed mod. - Reopen the launcher and use its repair or reinstall action for that mod.
- Start with the repaired mod in the intended load order and check whether the same first compiler line returns.
This process replaces a potentially incomplete or stale workshop copy. It does not fix a mod that is simply incompatible with the current game or with another mod, so continue to version and dependency checks if the message returns unchanged.
Step 3: align game, mod, framework, and dependency versions
Compiler errors involving an override or missing symbol are strong signs of an API mismatch. For example, an override of OnPartDismantledServer that is absent from the loaded base class means the mod expects a method the current game or dependency does not provide. A missing STATE_PLANTED variable similarly indicates that the script expects a symbol from a different version or an uninstalled dependency.

Update the named mod and its framework
Check the mod’s current workshop files and its documented dependency list. Update the named mod and each required framework or library together, rather than updating only the visible content mod. If the author provides a version compatibility note, compare it with the game build running on the client or server.
Remove stale duplicates
Make sure an older copy is not being loaded from a second location while the current workshop copy is also active. Duplicate files can produce duplicate declarations even when each individual package is valid. Use the path in the error to identify which copy is actually being read.
Keep client and server builds compatible
For multiplayer, the client and server should use matching versions of required mods and dependencies. A client that has updated one package while the server still loads an older framework can produce an override or missing-variable failure on one side only. Record the versions and load order on both sides before changing them.
Step 4: verify mod order before deeper testing
Some mods depend on a framework being loaded first, while others patch or extend content supplied by another package. An incorrect order can make a valid script appear to have a missing class, method, or variable.

- Write down the server’s intended order or the launcher’s current order before rearranging anything.
- Place required frameworks and dependencies ahead of the mods that use them, following each author’s instructions.
- Keep client and server order consistent where the server configuration requires it.
- Restart after the order change and compare the first compiler line with the original capture.
Changing order is a controlled test. If it changes the named symbol or moves the failure to another file, preserve both results; that information helps identify a dependency relationship. If nothing changes, return to the documented order rather than accumulating untracked permutations.
Step 5: bisect the mod list to find conflicts
A mod can work by itself and still fail when combined with another package. Bohemia Interactive’s feedback tracker contains reports of World-module failures caused by combinations even though individual mods loaded successfully. The efficient response is a binary search, or bisect, rather than removing and reinstalling every mod at random.
- Keep the last known failing list and divide the optional mods into two groups of roughly equal size.
- Launch with only the first group plus required dependencies.
- If it fails, the cause is in that group; if it succeeds, test the second group.
- Divide the failing group again and repeat until one mod or a small pair remains.
- Test the remaining candidate alone, then with its required dependencies, and finally with the suspected partner.
Retain a written matrix of each test: group contents, order, result, and first compiler line. This prevents a long investigation from circling back to an already-tested combination.
Interpreting the bisect result
- One mod fails alone: repair it, update it, or report the exact compiler line to its author.
- Two mods fail together but work separately: treat the pair as an incompatibility or load-order problem and check both authors’ compatibility notes.
- Every group fails: a shared dependency, stale common file, or server configuration is more likely than one isolated content mod.
- The result changes after a repair: the original workshop copy may have been incomplete or corrupted; keep the repaired version and retest the complete intended set.
Step 6: troubleshoot a dedicated server with the RPT log
Server owners need evidence from both sides of the connection. Confirm that the server is loading the intended mod versions, dependencies, and order, and that connecting clients are not using a different revision.

What to collect
- The complete
DayZServer_x64_*.RPTfile from the failed startup. - The first compiler error, including its path and line number.
- The server’s complete mod list and load order.
- The client’s mod list and load order, if the client also fails.
- The game build and the update date or version associated with each changed mod.
How to read the log
Start at the first script-compiler error, not the final shutdown message. Later entries may report missing classes or failed initialization because the World module never compiled. Search upward for the earliest named file and preserve a short excerpt that includes the preceding load information.
A DayZ forum response specifically requested the RPT log when diagnosing a mod-enabled server. Providing that file is substantially more useful than reporting only that the World module failed.
Step 7: use the root-level scripts-file fix only for the matching pattern
A 2018 DayZ forum report describes a duplicate infected-command declaration being fixed by deleting a stray scripts file from the DayZ root directory and launching again. This is a case report, not a universal instruction.
Use that fallback only when your compiler names the same duplicate-style declaration or clearly identifies a stray root-level script. First close the game, copy the file to a safe backup location, then remove the suspected stray file and retry an otherwise unchanged launch. If the error does not match that pattern, do not delete the root file merely because the generic World heading is present; use the mod, dependency, or conflict procedures instead.
Choosing the remedy from the evidence
| Observed situation | Most appropriate remedy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Client and server both fail only after one mod is enabled | Repair that workshop folder, then update the mod and dependencies. | The named package is the common changed component. |
| Base game works; several mods together fail | Check order and bisect the set. | The failure may be an interaction rather than a damaged installation. |
| Override method is absent from the base class | Align the mod with the game/framework API. | The script was written against a different class definition. |
Missing variable such as STATE_PLANTED |
Install or update the dependency that defines it, then retest. | The compiler cannot resolve a symbol expected by the mod. |
| Duplicate declaration points to a root-level scripts file | Back up and remove only that suspected stray file. | This matches the specific 2018 case report. |
| Server fails but a clean client launch works | Compare server files, order, versions, and the RPT log. | The server may be loading a different package set. |
Common mistakes that make the error harder to fix
- Troubleshooting the headline instead of the compiler line: the World label covers multiple causes.
- Deleting the entire workshop cache: this removes useful evidence and creates a larger reinstall job when one folder may be affected.
- Updating only the visible content mod: frameworks and dependencies can be the component whose API changed.
- Changing several variables at once: if order, versions, and files all change together, you cannot tell which action mattered.
- Ignoring the server’s RPT: the final launcher popup rarely contains enough context for a server diagnosis.
- Assuming a mod pair is safe because each mod works alone: combinations can introduce duplicate globals or competing overrides.
- Deleting a root file without a backup: a targeted case remedy should remain reversible.
What to send when you need help
If the error survives repair, version alignment, order checks, and bisecting, report it with reproducible evidence. Include the exact compiler sentence, the first named file and line, the game build, the full client and server mod lists in order, and the relevant RPT excerpt. State whether an unmodded launch works and identify the smallest failing mod group you found.
Send that package to the affected mod’s author or a DayZ support forum. A report that says only “World module failed” cannot distinguish a duplicate declaration from an API mismatch or a conflict between two otherwise functional mods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line
There is no single universal fix for “Can’t compile ‘World’ script module.” Read the first compiler line, prove whether the base game works without mods, repair the specifically named workshop folder, align versions and dependencies, and bisect combinations that fail together. Server administrators should add matching client/server configurations and the complete RPT log. Reserve root-level file deletion for the exact duplicate-script pattern it addresses, and keep a backup before trying it.
