The official troubleshooting guidance does not document a universal CSS Grid fix or a Grid-specific switch. A renderer change is worth evaluating only after a minimal reproduction still fails with the right CSS and viewport.
Start by identifying the renderer
“Winnovative HTML-to-PDF” can refer to different packages and configurations. Before changing CSS or converter settings, record the package name and version from your project’s package manager or lockfile, the .NET/runtime target, operating system, and whether conversion runs in a Classic library or client/server setup, or uses the newer PDF Next/PDF Chromium option.
The NuGet listing identifies Winnovative.HtmlToPdf 20.0.2 as Classic and lists a separate Pdf.Next.HtmlToPdf package for a newer rendering engine. Package listings can change, so verify what your project actually installs rather than relying on a copied setup note. Winnovative.HtmlToPdf on NuGet
Winnovative’s FAQ says that beginning with version 9.0, Internet Explorer is no longer used as the rendering engine. That historic threshold rules out one outdated assumption; it does not tell you the precise engine or CSS Grid behavior of every later product and configuration. Winnovative HTML to PDF FAQ

Reduce the failure to a minimal case
Make a small static HTML file with one grid container, two or three clearly distinguishable children, and only the CSS needed to reproduce the problem. Save the rendered PDF alongside a browser rendering of the same file. Change one variable at a time: stylesheet access, viewport width, page fitting, and then renderer. This is a debugging approach, not a vendor-prescribed test protocol; its purpose is to separate a Grid-layout failure from missing inputs or PDF scaling.
- Record the exact conversion input. Keep the HTML, CSS, and any linked assets together, and note whether the converter receives a URL or an HTML string.
- Keep the reproduction static first. Remove JavaScript and unrelated styles if possible. If the static grid works but the application page fails, investigate resource loading, scripts, or application-specific CSS.
- Compare at the same effective width. Check the HTML layout width independently from the PDF page size, orientation, margins, and fit setting.
- Change one setting per run. Keep the input and output files so that a change in appearance can be tied to a specific setting.
Confirm that the grid stylesheet and assets loaded
A missing stylesheet can look like an unsupported CSS feature: the PDF may show ordinary block-flow content because the rules that define display: grid never arrived. When converting an HTML string, inspect relative URLs in link, @import, font, and image references. Winnovative’s troubleshooting guide says relative resource URLs require the correct base URL parameter or full URLs. It also identifies resource access problems as a reason external CSS and other assets may fail to appear. Winnovative .NET Core troubleshooting guide
Check access from the machine and service identity that performs conversion, not just from your desktop browser. A stylesheet that requires authentication, depends on a developer-only network route, or redirects to a login page may be unavailable to the converter even when it opens locally. For a quick isolation test, embed the minimal Grid CSS in the HTML; if the layout then changes, investigate external resource loading rather than assuming a Grid engine defect.

Separate the layout viewport from PDF scaling
Winnovative’s troubleshooting material describes a default HTML viewer width of 1024 pixels. It notes that fitting content at that width to A4 portrait can scale the result down. The guide suggests trying an approximately 800-pixel viewer width or setting FitWidth to false. These are layout and page-fit experiments—not CSS Grid switches. Winnovative .NET Core troubleshooting guide
Grid tracks and responsive breakpoints respond to the width available during HTML layout. PDF fitting can then apply a separate scale to fit the laid-out page. As a result, a grid can have the expected columns but appear tiny, or change columns because the converter laid it out at an unexpected width. Test these dimensions separately:
- HTML viewer width: establish the width used to lay out the page. Compare the documented default with an approximately 800-pixel test if it suits your content.
- PDF paper and orientation: verify whether A4 portrait, landscape, or another page size matches the intended design.
- Margins: account for usable page width after margins; changing margins can change fit and clipping outcomes.
FitWidth: test width fitting on and off. The FAQ warns that disabling width fitting can cut off content unless page width or orientation is adjusted. Winnovative HTML to PDF FAQ
Do not adopt an 800-pixel width as a universal fix: it can change breakpoints and track sizes, and the appropriate width depends on the page design. Likewise, turning off fitting can preserve apparent scale while making content overflow the PDF page.

Wait for client-side content only when it is dynamic
If JavaScript inserts the grid container, grid children, or styles after the initial document loads, the converter may capture the page before those changes occur. Winnovative documents a conversion delay and manual triggering as ways to wait for asynchronous content. Use them only when the reproduction depends on client-side rendering; adding an arbitrary delay to a static HTML document can slow conversion without addressing the cause. Winnovative .NET Core troubleshooting guide
First compare a static version containing the final grid markup and styles. If that version renders while the live page does not, test an appropriate delay or an explicit trigger tied to the point when your application has finished populating the page. Recheck the output after adjusting timing, since longer waits are not themselves proof that Grid support is the problem.

If a minimal static case still fails after confirming the CSS loaded and checking the layout width, test the same case in Winnovative’s PDF Next/PDF Chromium option. Winnovative describes that offering as Chromium-based and intended for modern HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. That is a vendor product claim, not an independently verified guarantee for your particular Grid properties, print styles, fonts, or deployment setup. Winnovative HTML to PDF product page

Compare the current package and the newer option in the environment where you will deploy, not just on a developer workstation. Record the exact package/version, operating system and runtime compatibility, architecture, output for the same minimal case, external-resource and font behavior, print-media behavior, and the migration, deployment, licensing, and support requirements relevant to your project. The cited vendor materials do not provide a CSS Grid feature matrix or Grid benchmark, so the reproduction is the useful evidence for your page.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What the PDF shows | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Items stack as though grid rules are absent | CSS did not load, or a different stylesheet/path was used | Test inline minimal CSS; correct relative URLs with a base URL or full URLs, and check access from the converter host. |
| Grid has columns but content is unexpectedly small | Viewer width and PDF fit-to-page scaling | Test the HTML width separately from page size and FitWidth. |
| Columns or breakpoints differ from the browser | Different layout viewport or print/layout CSS | Compare the width used by conversion with the browser’s effective width; inspect styles that apply in print output. |
| Grid is empty or partially populated | JavaScript-rendered content was not ready at capture time | Compare with static final markup; if the page is dynamic, test documented delay or manual triggering. |
| External fonts or images are also missing | Resource URL, authentication, network, or service-identity access | Test each asset from the conversion environment and correct URL or access configuration. |
| Minimal static case still differs | Package-specific renderer behavior or deployment difference | Record package/runtime/OS details and compare the same reproduction with PDF Next/PDF Chromium. |

When you need a version-specific answer
The available official material does not establish a universal CSS Grid defect, a Grid-specific fix, or a compatibility matrix for every Winnovative package. If the minimal reproduction still fails, send Winnovative support the smallest HTML/CSS case, the generated PDF, the package and version, runtime and operating system, and the conversion settings. Those details let support distinguish a renderer-specific issue from input and deployment conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Winnovative support CSS Grid?
The cited Winnovative sources do not provide a CSS Grid-specific compatibility matrix. Confirm the exact package and version, then test the layout in a minimal reproduction.
Should I always add a conversion delay?
No. A delay is relevant when JavaScript creates or populates the grid after initial load; it is not a general fix for static HTML.
Does ScreenshotNeo fix Winnovative PDF output?
No. ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server; it is an alternative for capturing a URL as an image or PDF, not a Winnovative renderer repair.
