Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your microphone works in Windows or Discord but not in CS:GO, troubleshoot the signal path in this order: hardware connection, Windows detection and test, microphone privacy permissions, Steam Voice, then the game’s push-to-talk or voice-activation settings. This sequence identifies whether the fault is physical, a Windows driver or permission block, a Steam device mismatch, or a CS configuration problem.
What the symptom usually means
“My mic works in Discord but not in CS” usually indicates that the microphone itself is functional and that CS:GO or Steam is using a different input, losing access to it, or applying a setting that keeps your voice below its activation threshold. A headset can also fail before software sees it: a loose boom connection, hardware mute switch, damaged cable, bad USB port, or analog plug in the wrong jack can all produce the same in-game symptom.

The fastest dividing test is Windows’ own microphone test. If Windows receives a clear signal, concentrate on permissions, Steam, and CS settings. If Windows cannot detect or hear the device, fix the connection or driver before changing game options.

1. Check the physical microphone path
Confirm the connection and mute controls
- Unplug and reconnect the headset firmly. For a 3.5 mm model, use the intended microphone/headset jack; for a USB model, connect directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Check that the boom is fully inserted into the ear-cup or inline control, if it is detachable.
- Turn off every hardware mute: a switch on the ear cup, an inline slider, or a button on the USB control pod. Some headsets show a red indicator when muted.
- If the microphone is USB, try another USB port. Steam’s microphone guidance specifically recommends another port when a USB microphone is not behaving correctly.
- Disconnect other microphones, webcams, controllers, and virtual-audio devices temporarily. They can become the default input and make CS appear silent.
After reconnecting, wait a few seconds for Windows to enumerate the device. If no new input appears in Sound settings, continue to the Windows detection and driver steps rather than launching CS repeatedly.

2. Prove the microphone works in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone you intend to use. Do not assume the first listed device is correct; choose the headset or USB name that matches the connected hardware.
- Use Windows’ microphone test and speak at a normal volume. Watch the input level or test result.
- If the result is weak, raise Input volume and test again. A level that moves when you speak proves that Windows is receiving audio, even if the signal is quiet.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- In the input section, select the intended microphone and use the built-in test or meter.
- Increase the input volume if your voice barely registers, then repeat the test.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The Sound controls still exist, but an unsupported installation does not receive the same ongoing security maintenance as Windows 11; plan an upgrade where your hardware and software permit it.
Interpret the Windows test
| Windows result | Likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Clear voice level | Steam or CS configuration | Check privacy permissions, Steam Voice, the overlay device, and push-to-talk. |
| Voice is present but very quiet | Input level or microphone gain | Raise Windows input volume, then adjust Steam gain and classic microphone boost. |
| No input meter movement | Connection, mute, driver, or hardware | Try another port, reinstall the audio device, and update its driver. |
| Device is missing entirely | Enumeration or driver failure | Use Device Manager to reinstall the device, restart, and update the driver. |
3. Repair detection and drivers in Device Manager
Microsoft’s microphone guidance recommends reinstalling the audio device in Device Manager and then updating the driver when Windows does not detect it.
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Audio inputs and outputs. Also check Sound, video and game controllers for the headset, USB audio device, or onboard audio controller.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Uninstall device. Confirm the removal, then restart Windows so it can detect the hardware again.
- Return to Device Manager. If the device is present, right-click it, choose Update driver, and let Windows search for an available driver.
- Run the Windows microphone test again before opening Steam.
If the device remains absent after a restart and another USB port, test the headset on a second computer if one is available. A microphone that is missing on multiple computers is more likely to have a hardware or cable fault than a CS setting problem.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
4. Allow microphone access for desktop games
Windows 11 privacy path
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. Steam and CS:GO are desktop applications, so this final switch matters even when a store app list does not show the game by name.
Windows 10 privacy path
- Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Enable device access and app access using the microphone switches on that page.
- Make sure desktop-app access is enabled when that option is shown.
Close and relaunch Steam after changing these permissions. A game that was already running may retain the earlier denied state until it starts again.
5. Select and test the microphone in Steam
Use Steam’s Voice page
- Open Steam and choose Steam > Settings > Voice.
- Choose the same microphone that passed the Windows test. Avoid leaving the selection on an automatic or virtual device while troubleshooting.
- Press Start Microphone Test and speak. Steam identifies input volume/gain as the first important voice setting, so confirm that the test hears you before changing game controls.
- If the test is silent, recheck Windows privacy access and the selected device. If it is audible but faint, increase input volume or gain gradually.
Recheck after CS launches
Steam warns that the input can switch when a game launches. Start CS:GO, open the in-game Steam overlay, and verify the Voice input device again. If it changed, select the intended microphone and run the test once more. This step explains many cases where the microphone works in Steam’s desktop test but not during a match.
6. Correct gain, boost, and recording level
Do not replace the headset or reinstall the game merely because teammates report a quiet voice. First determine whether a signal exists. A moving Windows meter or audible Steam test means the path works and the level needs adjustment.

Adjust Steam gain
In Steam > Settings > Voice, raise input volume/gain in small increments while using Start Microphone Test. Stop when normal speech is clear. Excessive gain can introduce clipping, keyboard noise, or feedback, so the highest value is not automatically the best value.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Adjust classic Windows recording properties
- Open the classic sound controls from Windows Sound settings and view the Recording devices.
- Open the selected microphone’s Properties, then inspect the Levels tab.
- Raise the microphone level. If the hardware exposes it, increase Microphone Boost one step at a time and retest.
- Apply the change, then repeat the Steam microphone test.
Use only one adjustment at a time. If Windows is already receiving a strong signal, additional boost can make the voice distorted without fixing CS detection.
7. Check CS:GO voice controls
Verify push-to-talk
Open the game’s audio or voice settings and confirm that voice communication is enabled. Check which key is bound to push-to-talk, then press that exact key while speaking. Rebind it temporarily to a key you are not using for movement, inventory, or a voice-chat utility. Exact menu labels can change between game builds, but the required checks remain the same: voice enabled, intended microphone selected where the build exposes that choice, and a working transmit key.

Check voice activation
If the build offers voice activation rather than push-to-talk, lower an overly high activation threshold. A threshold set above your normal speaking level produces silence even though Windows and Steam both show input. Test with a normal sentence, not a shout, and raise the threshold again only if background noise keeps opening the channel.
Test in a controlled session
- Join a low-stakes practice or private session.
- Confirm that the push-to-talk indicator appears when the bound key is held, if the interface provides one.
- Ask one teammate to confirm both volume and clarity. A teammate hearing static or clipping points to gain or boost; no indicator or no transmission points to the game binding or selected device.
8. Troubleshoot by symptom
“It works in Discord but not in CS”
Discord may be using a different input than Steam. Select the known-good microphone in Steam Voice, retest it, launch CS, and verify the device again in the overlay. Then check CS push-to-talk and activation threshold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Steam hears me, but teammates do not”
The likely remaining causes are a changed in-game device, an unbound or conflicting push-to-talk key, voice disabled in CS, or an activation threshold that is too high. Work through those game-side checks before changing Windows drivers.

“Windows hears me, but the voice is too quiet”
Increase Windows input volume, then Steam gain, and finally microphone boost in classic properties if available. Stop when speech is clear; excessive amplification creates distortion and background noise.
“No application hears me”
Return to the physical connection, privacy switches, and Device Manager. Try another USB port and, if possible, another computer. If Windows never detects the microphone after reinstalling and updating the device driver, replacement hardware is a practical diagnostic path.
9. Choosing replacement hardware when detection never returns
A replacement can distinguish a failed headset from a Windows configuration issue. USB models include their own digital audio interface and are often simpler to test; analog models rely on the PC’s microphone jack or a separate USB sound card.

| Option | Connection and setup | Microphone handling | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB headset such as Logitech H340 | USB-A plug-and-play; Logitech describes it as usable with a PC or Mac with a USB-A port or adapter without installing software. | Noise-cancelling microphone; no separate USB sound card required. | Basic calls, troubleshooting, and a straightforward replacement. |
| Analog 3.5 mm headset | Uses the computer’s headset/microphone jack; may require the correct splitter or a USB sound card. | Depends on the PC’s analog audio hardware and the headset capsule. | Systems that already have a reliable audio jack and users who want broad compatibility. |
| Gaming headset with USB sound card, represented by Logitech PRO X | External USB sound card; processing is handled through the supplied PC audio hardware and software. | Includes Blue VO!CE microphone processing for PC gaming communications. | Players who need more control over voice processing than a basic plug-and-play headset. |
Use the replacement as a test, not as proof that every CS microphone issue is hardware-related. If a second microphone works immediately, the original headset, cable, or connector is implicated; if neither works, return to Windows permissions and drivers.
Quick Recap
10. A complete order-of-operations checklist
- Headset plug or USB cable is fully seated.
- Boom is connected and every hardware mute is off.
- A different USB port has been tested when applicable.
- The intended microphone is selected in Windows Sound.
- Windows’ microphone test shows a usable signal.
- Microphone access, app access, and desktop-app access are enabled.
- The device has been reinstalled and its driver updated if Windows did not detect it.
- Steam Voice uses the same microphone and Start Microphone Test hears you.
- The device is rechecked in the Steam overlay after CS launches.
- CS voice is enabled, push-to-talk is bound to a working key, and voice activation is not set too high.
- Input volume, gain, and boost have been adjusted only when the signal is present but quiet.
