If a WordPress page looks or behaves differently in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, reproduce the same problem first, rule out stale cached files, then isolate WordPress components and the specific browser feature involved. Fix the underlying behavior with a usable fallback, and retest the original task on the browsers and devices your site needs to support.
Reproduce the problem before changing anything
Compare the same page and action in the affected browser and at least one other browser or device. Keep the viewport and steps as close as possible: a layout difference may come from a narrower screen or touch input, not the browser alone. MDN lists Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Edge as examples of stable browsers to include in cross-browser testing, while emphasizing that the right targets depend on the site and its users (MDN: Cross browser testing).
Write down the page URL, browser and version if available, operating system or device, viewport dimensions, exact steps, expected result, and what actually happened. Note whether the problem affects appearance, an interaction, or both. This gives you a repeatable test rather than a vague report such as “the site is broken in Safari.”
Use the browser’s developer tools to inspect the affected page. Check the console for JavaScript errors, the Network panel for failed requests, and the Styles or Inspector panel to see which CSS rules apply or are overridden. Reproduce a small part of the failure before making a targeted change; MDN recommends testing each small implementation part as you build rather than waiting until the end.

Make sure the browser is loading your latest changes
If a fix appears to have no effect, do not immediately edit more code. A browser may still be showing an older stylesheet or script, or a cache plugin or hosting layer may be serving stale files. WordPress.org’s troubleshooting FAQ also lists editing the wrong file or location as a possible reason changes do not appear. WordPress core does not include a cache by default, so identify which cache layers your particular site actually uses (WordPress.org: Troubleshooting FAQ).
- Hard-refresh the affected page or clear that browser’s cache, then repeat the test.
- If your site uses a WordPress caching plugin, purge its cache using that plugin’s controls.
- Check whether your host or server has a separate cache configured and purge it if appropriate.
- Confirm you edited the active theme, child theme, template, stylesheet, or script that the page is using.
- Load the page again in the affected browser and comparison browser to confirm they receive the updated result.
Do not assume that every site has the same cache controls: WordPress does not supply a default cache, and the relevant plugin or host interface depends on your installation.
Isolate a theme or plugin conflict safely
If the problem started after a plugin update, theme update, or settings change, test whether the symptom follows that component. Back up the site first and use a recovery path; disabling active components directly on a live site can affect visitors.

Learn WordPress describes the Health Check and Troubleshooting plugin’s troubleshooting mode as a session-scoped way for an administrator to disable plugins and switch to a default theme without changing what other visitors see in that session. In that mode, re-enable components one at a time and refresh the page after each change. When the fault returns, you have narrowed the likely cause (Learn WordPress: Troubleshooting plugin and theme conflicts).

Identify the browser feature that is actually failing
Once you have ruled out stale content and narrowed down WordPress components, inspect the precise CSS property, value, syntax, or JavaScript API involved. Look up compatibility for the browser versions and environments your site supports rather than treating browser names as a reliable proxy for feature support. MDN warns that user-agent strings can be misleading; browser identity does not reliably prove that a particular feature is present (MDN: Browser detection using the user agent).

MDN’s Baseline information summarizes support across Safari on iOS and macOS, Chrome on Android and desktop, Edge desktop, and Firefox on Android and desktop. It is a useful starting point, not a complete promise about older releases, other browsers such as embedded webviews, assistive technology, or the accessibility, usability, performance, and security of your implementation. Test in the environments that matter to your site.
Fix the issue with a working baseline and a targeted enhancement
Use progressive enhancement: make essential content and interactions work first with broadly supported behavior, then add newer presentation or functionality when the browser supports it. A fallback should remain useful, not merely avoid a console error. Check that it preserves keyboard access and does not hide or make essential content difficult to use.
CSS: keep the fallback outside @supports
Write the basic styling first. Place enhanced styling inside a feature query so browsers that do not recognize the tested declaration retain the baseline. MDN documents @supports for checking whether a browser recognizes a CSS property/value declaration (MDN: @supports).

JavaScript: check the needed capability before calling it
Test for the specific API or member your code needs, then provide an alternative or preserve the essential task when it is absent. Do not branch on a browser brand when a capability check is available. MDN’s feature-detection guidance explains this approach (MDN: Feature detection).

When the browser claims support but the feature still fails
A successful @supports test means the browser accepts the declaration; it does not prove that the implementation is bug-free or complete. If the failure persists, reproduce it in the affected browser and version, reduce the page to a small case that still demonstrates the fault, and apply a targeted workaround only when the evidence points to a genuine implementation difference (MDN: @supports).
Retest the whole task and prevent regressions
Repeat the original steps after each fix in the target browsers, versions, devices, and viewport sizes. Check the real user task—not only whether the page looks closer—and verify basic keyboard operation. A result on one desktop browser does not establish that mobile Safari, an embedded webview, an older browser, or assistive technology behaves the same way. MDN recommends testing across browsers and devices; your site’s audience and support commitments should guide the final test set (MDN: Cross browser testing).
- Keep a repeatable checklist of the page, action, browser/device, viewport, and expected outcome.
- Include older versions or embedded webviews only when your users or support requirements make them relevant.
- Where an automated test setup is available, add the reproduced failure so the same behavior can be checked after future theme, plugin, or code changes.
- Use compatibility summaries to prioritize investigation, but do not treat them as a replacement for accessibility and usability checks in the actual target environment.

Is every difference between Safari and Chrome a WordPress bug?
No. The failure may come from a browser feature, stale files, a theme, a plugin, or differences in device and viewport. Reproduce it and isolate the cause before changing WordPress core.
Does @supports guarantee that a CSS feature works correctly?
No. It detects whether the browser accepts the tested declaration, not whether its implementation is free of bugs or partial behavior.
