Start with software checks that are quick and reversible, then measure memory, temperatures, and storage before buying hardware.
Use this order: patch the game and Windows, update the graphics driver, verify the installation, remove overlays and mods, allow the game’s shader cache to finish, reduce demanding settings, check free RAM and VRAM, move the install to an SSD or M.2 when appropriate, and collect reproducible evidence if the problem remains.

Identify the symptom before changing anything
Write down exactly when the failure occurs. A crash at startup points to installation files, drivers, permissions, security software, or a missing requirement. A hitch that appears while entering a new area can be shader compilation, asset streaming, storage latency, or memory pressure. Stutter that gradually worsens during a session often warrants a temperature and memory check. Long, consistent loading screens are more likely to involve storage, free space, or insufficient RAM than a graphics-quality setting.
| Symptom | Most useful first checks | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Game will not launch or crashes immediately | Patch, Windows and GPU driver updates; verify files; remove overlays and mods; check security software and permissions | That a new release automatically requires new hardware |
| Brief hitches during the first play session | Allow shader compilation and a warm-up session; then measure again | That every hitch is a failing GPU |
| Stutter while traversing or loading new areas | Check free RAM, VRAM, drive health, temperatures and graphics settings | That lowering every setting is the only fix |
| Long loading screens | Check whether the game is on a mechanical drive, available space, drive health and system memory | That an SSD fixes crashes caused by bad files or overheating |
Capture a short video or note the location, action, and time at which the problem occurs. This makes later comparisons meaningful and gives support staff a reproducible case instead of a general report that the game is “slow.”

Complete the baseline checks
Compare your PC with the game’s requirements
Check the developer or launcher listing for the minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, operating-system version, and storage requirements. Meeting minimum requirements means the game is expected to run under a lower target, not that recommended settings or a steady frame rate are guaranteed. If your hardware falls below minimum, software troubleshooting may improve stability but cannot make unsupported configurations reliable.
Install every available update
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates. Restart when Windows requests it.
- Update the graphics driver using the GPU manufacturer’s current package or official update application. Restart after installation if prompted.
- Open the game’s launcher and install the latest game patch. A launch-day build can contain fixes that are not present on the original download.
Steam’s launch checklist specifically recommends updating Windows and drivers, checking system requirements, verifying game files, and disabling non-essential software. Apply those checks before changing registry settings or replacing hardware.
Verify the installation before reinstalling
Verification is a low-risk way to find an incomplete or corrupted download. The launcher compares local file checksums with its server manifest and reacquires files that are missing or do not match. It does not replace your graphics card, reset every setting, or generally erase save data, but you should still know where the game stores saves before performing any repair operation.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Launch the game once the launcher reports completion. If it reacquired files, allow any first-run setup to finish.
Other launchers
Use the launcher’s equivalent Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command. The wording differs by platform, so follow the game developer’s support instructions for that launcher. If verification repeatedly downloads the same files, check the drive for errors and confirm that security software is not quarantining game data.

Remove software conflicts safely
Temporarily close anything that injects an overlay, records video, changes frame timing, applies an on-screen display, or modifies game files. Common examples include recording utilities, performance monitors, chat overlays, RGB tools, tuning utilities, and mods. Test the unmodified game after each change so you know which action mattered.
Use a clean test session
- Exit the game and its launcher.
- Disable non-essential overlays and recording features, including the launcher’s own overlay if it is enabled.
- Remove or disable mods and third-party injectors. Keep a copy of mod configuration files if you intend to restore them.
- Restart Windows, launch the game, and reproduce the same action.
If the game launches only after security software is disabled, do not leave protection off. Follow the developer or launcher’s instructions for a narrowly scoped exclusion, test briefly, then restore normal protection. An administrator launch can also be a diagnostic step when the support page recommends it; it should not become a permanent workaround without understanding why normal permissions fail.
Give shader compilation time to finish
Many new PC games compile shaders on the first launch or while you play. During that period, the CPU prepares effects for your specific driver and hardware, so traversal or camera movement can hitch even when average frame rate looks acceptable.

Any stuttering should be resolved once the cache has been created.” For the titles covered by that guidance, shader compilation can take 35 to 90 minutes, depending on PC specifications (Square Enix, 2026). Treat that as a title-specific warm-up range, not a universal timer.

AMD describes background shader compilation as a way to reduce initial game load times and notes that compilation is CPU-bound. Its Adrenalin 26.9.2 support note recommends allowing about 15 minutes of gameplay before measuring performance in affected titles. That shorter interval is a practical minimum for a test session; a game with a larger cache may need substantially longer, including the 35-to-90-minute range stated by Square Enix.
A reliable shader test
- Launch after updating the game and driver.
- Play the same route or visit the same area for at least the warm-up period stated by the developer. Keep the game running rather than repeatedly restarting it.
- Record when the hitches occur and whether they become less frequent.
- Close and relaunch once, then repeat the route. If the cache was created successfully, the same effects should generally hitch less.
Do not delete shader-cache folders as a first response. Clearing a cache forces compilation again and can make the next session look worse. Use cache-clearing instructions only when the developer or driver support specifically recommends them for a corrupted cache.
Lower the settings that cost the most
If stutter or crashes continue after the warm-up, change one group of settings at a time. Capcom’s PC troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing settings when a system meets minimum but not recommended specifications. Start with the options that affect frame time and memory most strongly:
- Shadows: Lower quality, distance, or contact-shadow options first.
- Detail quality and view distance: Reduce the amount of geometry and texture detail streamed into the scene.
- Resolution and upscaling: Test a lower output resolution or an appropriate upscaler before cutting every visual option.
- Window mode: Compare exclusive fullscreen, borderless, and windowed modes if the game supports them.
- Frame-rate limit: Use a cap your system can sustain instead of allowing large frame-time swings.
Disable automatic optimization in a GPU companion application while testing so the game’s own settings are not silently overwritten. Record the original values before making changes. A stable lower preset is more useful than changing ten options at once and losing track of the cause.

Check RAM and VRAM pressure
System memory
Open Task Manager while the game is running and watch memory use during the exact scene that stutters. SEGA Support states that with less than 1 GB of free system memory, paging can produce repeated stutters. Insufficient RAM can also increase loading times because Windows must move data between memory and storage.
Close browsers, launchers, virtual machines, and other applications that consume memory. If free memory remains below that threshold during normal play, an RAM upgrade may be justified, but measure first and check your motherboard or laptop’s supported capacity. More memory cannot repair corrupted files, an outdated driver, or overheating.
Video memory
Use the game’s video-memory indicator or a monitoring tool to see whether the workload exceeds available VRAM. SEGA notes that insufficient VRAM can trigger reductions during loading to avoid out-of-memory crashes. Lower texture quality, resolution, ray-tracing features, and texture-streaming distance before concluding that the GPU must be replaced.
Recommended Free Tools
Leave headroom rather than tuning the indicator right to its limit. Different scenes allocate resources differently, and a setting that loads successfully in a menu can still fail when a busy area streams in.

Diagnose long loading times and storage
Mechanical hard drives are supported by some games, but they have much lower random read performance than solid-state storage. SEGA’s PC performance guidance recommends installing the game on an SSD or M.2 for the best experience because the higher read/write speeds can dramatically reduce loading times.
Check the current install
- Identify the drive containing the game in the launcher’s storage settings.
- Check the drive’s health with the operating system or the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic utility.
- Leave free capacity on both the system drive and the game drive. Windows needs working space for paging and updates, while the game may need room for patches and temporary data.
- If the game is on a mechanical drive and an SSD or M.2 is available, move or reinstall it there using the launcher’s library-management feature.
- Run the same load repeatedly after the move. Compare like with like: the same save, location, graphics preset, and background applications.
Storage changes primarily address loading and asset-streaming delays. They will not correct a crash caused by a bad driver, a damaged executable, excessive heat, or a security product blocking a file. Back up saves before uninstalling or moving a game, especially when the title does not synchronize saves reliably.
Check temperatures and power behavior
Heat can reduce clock speeds and make frame times uneven; severe thermal or power problems can also cause crashes. Capcom recommends improving ventilation, lowering settings, or applying a frame-rate limit when excessive heat makes play less smooth. SEGA warns that inadequate laptop cooling can reduce CPU and GPU performance and may lead to crashes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDesktop checks
- Confirm that intake and exhaust vents are unobstructed.
- Remove dust from filters and fans using the manufacturer’s safe cleaning procedure.
- Make sure fans spin and that the graphics card is seated correctly.
- Monitor CPU and GPU temperature, clock speed, and power behavior during the reproducible scene.
Laptop checks
- Play on AC power and select the manufacturer’s performance or thermal mode when appropriate.
- Use a hard, ventilated surface rather than fabric that blocks intake vents.
- Check the manufacturer’s thermal-control application for fan behavior and power limits.
A frame-rate cap can reduce heat and power spikes while you diagnose the system. If temperatures remain abnormal after ventilation and a sensible cap, stop stress testing and consult the PC or laptop manufacturer.
Choose the next remedy by evidence, cost, and risk
| Remedy | Best fit | Evidence to look for | Reversibility and cost | Risk or precaution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patch Windows, the game, and the GPU driver | Launch crashes, instability, unexplained glitches | Pending updates or an old driver | Usually reversible through the vendor’s supported rollback; no new hardware cost | Restart and keep a restore or rollback path if a driver introduces a new problem |
| Verify game files | Failed launch, missing assets, repeated file errors | Verification reacquires files | Low risk; download time and bandwidth | Back up saves if the launcher’s behavior is unclear |
| Disable overlays, mods, and injectors | Crashes after an overlay appears or after a mod update | Clean session works normally | Free and easy to reverse | Keep copies of mod settings and do not disable security protection indefinitely |
| Complete shader warm-up | First-session traversal or effect hitches | Hitches decline after the title-specific compilation period | Free; requires uninterrupted play time | Do not judge final performance before the cache is built |
| Lower demanding settings or cap frame rate | GPU load, VRAM pressure, heat, or minimum-spec systems | Lower settings reduce frame time, memory use, or temperature | Free and fully reversible | Record original settings and change one group at a time |
| Free memory or add supported RAM | Paging, less than 1 GB free RAM, long loads | Task Manager shows sustained memory pressure | Closing apps is free; hardware cost depends on the system | Confirm compatibility before buying or installing modules |
| Move the game to SSD or M.2 | Long loads and streaming delays from a mechanical drive | Drive type, health, and free-space checks point to storage | Reversible library move; hardware cost if no suitable drive exists | Back up saves and verify capacity before moving |
| Thermal and power corrections | Performance drops as the session heats up, laptop throttling, heat-related crashes | Temperature and clock changes coincide with the symptom | Ventilation and a cap are low cost; repairs may cost more | Stop testing if temperatures or hardware behavior are unsafe |
This order keeps low-cost, reversible tests ahead of upgrades. A hardware purchase should follow measurements showing a specific shortage rather than replace the baseline checks.
When the game still crashes: collect a useful report
After updates, verification, a clean software session, shader warm-up, and basic resource checks, document the failure instead of repeatedly reinstalling. Support teams can investigate a reproducible case more effectively than a generic crash report.
Include these details
- CPU model, GPU model and VRAM amount, installed RAM, Windows version, and graphics-driver version.
- Game version, launcher, installation drive type, and whether the title is installed on an SSD, M.2, or mechanical drive.
- Security software, overlays, recording tools, mods, and whether the failure occurs with all of them disabled.
- The exact reproduction sequence: save file or level, location, action, and approximate time until the crash.
- Screenshots or a short video showing the symptom, plus temperatures or memory readings when relevant.
- The newest crash-report archive requested by the developer or launcher.
Capcom states that detailed reproduction information helps its team attempt to reproduce an error. Send the report through the game’s official support channel, and mention which troubleshooting steps changed the behavior. Do not upload personal files or full system dumps unless the support instructions specifically request them.
Quick Recap
A practical decision tree
- It crashes before the menu: update Windows, the game, and the GPU driver; verify files; disable overlays and mods; then test security-software and administrator-permission steps recommended by the launcher.
- It hitches only during the first session: complete the game’s shader warm-up. Use the developer’s stated period; Square Enix cites 35–90 minutes for the affected titles, while AMD recommends at least about 15 minutes before measuring CPU-bound shader behavior.
- It hitches after warm-up: check free RAM and VRAM, lower shadows or detail, test resolution and window mode, and monitor temperatures and clocks during the same route.
- It loads slowly every time: check drive health and free space, then move the installation from a mechanical drive to an SSD or M.2 when available. Investigate memory pressure if loading remains slow.
- Nothing changes: preserve saves, stop making random changes, and submit the system details, reproduction steps, media, and crash archive to the developer.
