If TROLLHEIM: GNOMES crashes, freezes, or fails while saving, start with the low-risk sequence that applies to its current Steam playtest: update the playtest, restart Steam and Windows, confirm your hardware meets the listed requirements, update Windows and your graphics driver, and verify the installed files. The April 2026 playtest already received fixes for a storage-related crash and a host-visibility bug, so diagnosing an old build can send you after a problem that is already fixed.
Do not delete save folders or disable cloud data as a first step. No verified Trollheim-specific save location or rollback procedure is published; preserve any files and evidence before making destructive changes.

Understand the version you are troubleshooting
Steam currently lists TROLLHEIM: GNOMES as “coming soon,” not as a normal released game. A separate SteamDB record identifies the public playtest as App 4584570, released on April 14, 2026, with a public branch built on April 20, 2026. The game is therefore an evolving test build: a crash or freeze can be a title defect, a problem in the particular playtest build, or an interaction with your Windows, driver, or hardware configuration.
The Steam listing describes solo play and online co-op for as many as seven friends. That matters when diagnosing a failure: a world that works alone but fails when you host or join points toward a network, host-state, or multiplayer-specific problem rather than a general graphics failure.

The developers describe the project as early development with survival, crafting, building, biome exploration, and co-op systems implemented. Expect hotfixes and behavior changes between playtest builds, and record the exact build number whenever you report a problem.
Record the symptom before changing anything
Write down what happened while the evidence is still available. A precise trigger is more useful than “it crashes randomly.” Record:
- Whether the game fails before the main menu, while loading a world, during exploration, when connecting to co-op, or during a save.
- Whether only the game closes, the screen stops responding, or the entire computer locks up and needs a restart.
- Your playtest build number, Windows edition and version, graphics-card model, installed RAM, and graphics-driver version.
- The world name, the last action you performed, whether you were hosting or joining, and whether the same action works in a new solo world.
- Any error text, crash window, screenshot, or log file that appears.
This distinction determines which branch to follow. Steam notes that unusual combinations of hardware and software can cause launch and performance failures, while a repeatable action in one build is more likely to be a game defect.
Check the published PC requirements
Compare your computer with Steam’s listed minimum and recommended specifications before spending time on settings changes. Falling below the minimum graphics, memory, operating-system, or DirectX requirement can make crashes and freezes persistent; lowering a few options cannot supply missing hardware features.

These are the Steam listing’s stated requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or stability level. Leave additional free space for Windows, shader caches, updates, and temporary files. If your system is below the minimum GPU or RAM specification, treat hardware replacement or another supported PC as the long-term remedy rather than repeatedly reinstalling the playtest.
Use this safe troubleshooting order
1. Fully restart Steam and Windows
- Exit the game.
- Close Steam from its menu and confirm it is no longer running in the notification area or Task Manager.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Steam and allow any pending TROLLHEIM: GNOMES playtest update to finish before launching.
A restart clears a stalled process and ensures that a downloaded hotfix is actually loaded. Do not test a suspected fix while Steam is still applying an update.
2. Install Windows and graphics-driver updates
- Run Windows Update and install applicable updates for your Windows edition.
- Install the current driver supplied by your NVIDIA or AMD hardware vendor for the installed GPU.
- Restart Windows after both updates, even if the installer does not insist on it.
Use the driver for the GPU physically installed in the PC, not a package intended for a different model. If a problem begins immediately after a driver change, note that fact in your report rather than repeatedly changing versions without recording which one was tested.

3. Verify the local game files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click TROLLHEIM: GNOMES and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam, then reproduce the original action once.
Verification replaces missing or corrupted installed files without intentionally removing your worlds. It will not repair a title bug, a failing GPU, or a damaged save that is stored outside the installation directory, but it is the correct first file-level check.

4. Escalate Steam installation repairs only if verification does not help
Steam’s installation guidance also lists clearing the download cache, repairing the Steam library folder, changing the download region, and moving the game to another Steam library. Treat these as escalation steps, not simultaneous fixes. Change one item at a time and test after each change so you know which action altered the result. A library move or cache clear can require another download; back up any discovered save directory first.
Fix launch and loading crashes
When the game closes before the menu
Start with the restart, update, requirements, and file-verification sequence above. Then disable non-essential overlays, capture programs, hardware monitors, and other background utilities for one test launch. These programs add another layer between the game and the graphics driver; removing them helps distinguish a software conflict from a game failure.
Do not add launch commands copied from unrelated games unless the developer documents them for this playtest. An unsupported command can create a new variable and make the report harder to interpret.

Test a new solo world after verifying files. If the new world loads but one existing world does not, stop attempting destructive repairs and move to the save-preservation procedure below. If every world fails, capture the build number and the point at which loading stops; that pattern is more consistent with an installation, driver, or title-level issue than with one damaged world.

Known storage-inventory crash
An April 17, 2026 playtest hotfix fixed a crash caused by swapping an item after dragging it from storage that had already been destroyed. If your crash follows that exact sequence, update before testing again. Avoid reproducing it on purpose in an important world, and describe the destroyed-storage and item-swap actions in any report. If the updated build still crashes, verify files and include the new build number so support can tell whether the hotfix is present.
Reduce freezes and graphical lockups
Steam recommends treating random freezes as performance problems first. After updating and verifying files:
- Return the GPU to its factory-default profile. Remove overclocks, undervolts, custom fan curves, and experimental driver profiles for the test.
- Lower resolution, shadows, view distance, effects, and other demanding video options. Apply the changes, restart the game, and test the same location.
- Try windowed mode if exclusive full-screen mode freezes. Keep the mode change as the only variable in that test.
- Close overlays, recording tools, browser-heavy applications, and non-essential utilities.
- Watch whether the whole PC freezes or only the game stops responding. A whole-system lockup deserves separate hardware and driver attention; a game-only freeze is more useful to report as a reproducible title symptom.
Do not interpret a temporary improvement after lowering settings as proof that the game is fixed. Record which setting changed and whether the freeze returns after extended play, in a busy area, or during co-op.

Use a controlled three-test comparison:
- Load the same area in a solo world.
- Host a co-op session and repeat the action.
- Join another player’s session and repeat it as a client.
If only hosting fails, check that the playtest is current before investigating networking further. The April 20, 2026 hotfix addressed host fog that could make the world nearly impossible to see. A host who sees dense fog while clients do not should update and retest before changing graphics settings. If only joining fails, record whether the failure occurs during connection, world loading, or gameplay; those are different symptoms even when Steam displays the same disconnect message.
Because co-op supports up to seven friends, include the number of players, who was hosting, and whether every participant was on the same public branch. Do not assume a client-side reinstall will fix a host-only defect.
Handle save failures without risking a world
No verified public documentation currently provides a Trollheim save-folder path, backup command, or rollback procedure. That limitation changes the correct response: preserve first, experiment second.
What to do when saving fails
- Stop repeated save attempts if each attempt produces an error or a crash.
- Write down the world name, the last successful save you remember, the exact action before failure, and the playtest build.
- Look for a game-specific save directory using normal Windows search and the game’s documented support instructions. Do not assume a folder found for another title is correct.
- If you identify a likely save directory, copy it to a separate location before changing, moving, or renaming anything. Keep the original untouched.
- Capture screenshots and preserve any crash logs. Do not delete the folder, disable Steam Cloud, or reinstall until the developer’s current instructions confirm that step is safe.
A failed save can be an access, disk-space, installation, or game bug; a world that no longer loads may also be corrupted. Without an official path and recovery method, forum instructions that promise a rollback are unverified. The safest useful action is a preserved copy and a detailed support report, not a blind deletion.

Send a report that can be acted on
If the failure remains after the supported steps, use the game’s verified Steam support or community contact. Include:
- Playtest build number and whether you use the public branch.
- Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX version, and graphics-driver version.
- Whether the failure is launch, world loading, exploration, co-op connection, visibility, freezing, or saving.
- Exact reproduction steps, including the storage-destruction and item-swap sequence if relevant.
- Solo/host/client results, world name, player count, and the last successful action.
- Whether restarting, updating, verifying files, changing settings, or disabling overlays changed the behavior.
- Crash logs, screenshots, and the time of the failure, with personal information removed.
Steam directs players to the third-party game’s support contact when platform troubleshooting is insufficient. A report with a reproducible sequence and build number is more useful than a general statement that the game is unstable.
What is and is not established
- The storage-item-swap crash was addressed by the April 17, 2026 hotfix.
- The severe host-fog visibility problem was addressed by the April 20, 2026 hotfix.
- No authoritative crash-rate or freeze-rate percentage has been published. A SteamDB peak of 11 concurrent playtest players on April 16, 2026 is a player-count measurement, not a reliability statistic.
- No verified Trollheim save path, backup workflow, or rollback command is published. Treat unofficial recovery claims as unconfirmed until the developer documents them.
- The game is a coming-soon playtest rather than a standard Steam release, so fixes and requirements may change with later builds.
The practical order is therefore clear: update first, remove platform and driver variables, verify files, reduce performance variables, isolate solo from co-op, and protect saves before any destructive action. Stop when the evidence points to a title bug and send the developer a reproducible report instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
