If a Total War remaster crashes, freezes on a loading screen, or turns black after you press Play, start with the reversible fixes: verify the Steam installation, remove every mod, restart the computer, update Windows and the graphics driver, and make sure the game is using the high-performance GPU. If that does not work, test overlays and security software, repair the Visual C++ runtime, reset the game’s per-user files, and only then edit preferences.script.txt. A clean installation that still fails should be sent to SEGA Support with the exact error and the game’s crash report.
What to do first when the remaster crashes or shows a black screen
Use this order so that each test changes as little as possible and leaves a clear result. Close the game before every change.

- Restart Windows and Steam. This clears a stuck process and ensures pending updates are no longer waiting to install.
- Verify the game files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the Total War remaster, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam replaces missing or corrupted installation data.
- Remove all modifications. Unsubscribe from Workshop items and delete files manually added to the game directory. Test once with an entirely unmodded installation.
- Install Windows and graphics-driver updates. Use the current driver supplied by your GPU or laptop manufacturer.
- Force the dedicated GPU. In your laptop or graphics-control settings, select the game’s executable for the high-performance GPU rather than the energy-saving integrated GPU.
- Disable Steam Overlay and test security software. Temporarily turn off the overlay. If antivirus or firewall software is blocking Steam or the executable, test with it disabled briefly, then add an appropriate exclusion after confirming the conflict.
- Repair Visual C++ and permissions. Run the Visual C++ installers in Steam’s
_CommonRedistvcredistfolder, then try launching the game executable as administrator. - Reset per-user data. If the files verify but the problem remains, back up saves and rename the game’s folder under
C:Users<user>AppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly<game>. - Recover a graphics-setting crash. Back up and carefully edit

Do not change several advanced settings at once. A successful launch after one step tells you which category of problem was responsible.

Crashes can originate in different layers, and the right fix depends on which layer is failing. Installation data is repaired by Steam verification; settings and caches stored for your Windows account are rebuilt by resetting the AppData folder. Mods can load code or assets made for another game version. Drivers, GPU selection, overlays, antivirus rules, and missing runtime components can stop the executable before a menu appears. A crash after changing resolution or quality can instead be a rendering or video-memory problem.

How to verify the Steam installation
Verification is the safest first repair because it touches the installed game data, not your Windows configuration.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the Total War remaster and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam, then launch the game before reinstalling mods or changing graphics options.
Verification can download replacement files, so allow it to complete even if the progress appears to pause. It does not repair a damaged per-user preference file; use the AppData reset later if the installation is intact but the symptoms continue.
Will verifying files or removing mods fix it?
They often identify two different causes, so perform both rather than choosing one. Verification repairs missing or corrupted files in the installation. Removing mods eliminates altered scripts and assets that may no longer match the current game version. SEGA’s general troubleshooting guidance specifically says to remove modifications, including those made for an older or different version.
Remove Workshop subscriptions
- Open the game’s Workshop page in Steam.
- Unsubscribe from every item associated with the remaster, including cosmetic packs and compatibility patches.
- Restart Steam so it can remove the subscribed content.
Remove manually installed files
Unsubscribing does not remove files that were copied directly into the game directory. Compare the folder with a clean installation and remove only files added by the modification. If you cannot identify them confidently, uninstall the game, delete the remaining installation directory, reinstall it, and verify the files before adding anything back.

Launch one campaign or battle with no mods. If the clean game works, add modifications one at a time and launch between additions; the last item added is then the first suspect.
How to update Windows and the graphics driver
SEGA identifies an outdated or incompatible graphics driver as a common source of crashes and graphical problems. Its Steam troubleshooting page, updated 5 March 2026, warns that a system that is not up to date can lead to lag, system errors, or a system crash (BSOD).
Update Windows
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Install all available updates and restart when requested.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no required restart remains.
Install the correct driver
Download the current driver from the GPU manufacturer or the laptop manufacturer’s official support page. Laptop owners should check the laptop maker first when it supplies customized graphics drivers. Restart after installation, then test the unmodded game.
Choose the high-performance GPU
Systems with integrated and dedicated graphics can start the game on the lower-power adapter. In Windows graphics settings, add the game executable and set its preference to High performance. If your GPU control panel provides an equivalent per-application option, select the dedicated adapter there too. Keep the laptop connected to AC power while testing, because some power profiles limit the discrete GPU.

How to eliminate overlays, antivirus, and firewall conflicts
Background software can intercept a game window, inject an overlay, or block Steam’s executable. These tests are temporary diagnostics, not a reason to leave security protection disabled.
Disable Steam Overlay
- In Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- On the General page, turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Close the Properties window and launch again.
If the game starts, leave the overlay disabled while playing or re-enable it only after confirming that a later update has resolved the conflict.
Test antivirus and firewall rules
Temporarily pause the security product or create a test rule that allows Steam and the game executable, then launch once. If that resolves the problem, restore protection and add a narrowly scoped exclusion for the verified executable and Steam rather than disabling security permanently. If the test changes nothing, re-enable protection and continue to the next step.

The remaster may depend on Microsoft Visual C++ runtime components installed with Steam. Missing or damaged components can prevent a launch with little or no visible error.

- Open the game’s Steam installation folder.
- Open
_CommonRedistvcredist. - Run the included Visual C++ installers. If both 32-bit and 64-bit installers are present, repair or install each one offered for your system.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
When Windows permissions block startup, right-click the game executable, open Properties, choose the Compatibility tab, enable Run this program as an administrator, apply the change, and launch it from the installation folder. Use this only as a troubleshooting test; if it works, review folder permissions and security software rather than granting unnecessary rights to unrelated programs.
How to reset corrupted per-user data without damaging the installation
Steam verification does not replace preferences and caches stored in your Windows profile. If the installation verifies successfully but the game still crashes, freezes, or displays a black screen, rebuild those files.
- Exit the game and Steam completely. Check Task Manager to ensure no Total War process remains.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:Users<user>AppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly<game>in the address bar, replacing<user>and<game>with your account and title folder. - Copy the folder to another location as a backup. Preserve any save files you need.
- Rename the original folder, for example by adding
.old, rather than deleting it immediately. - Start the game. It will create fresh preferences and cache data.
- If the launch succeeds, restore saves selectively from the backup; do not copy the old preference or cache files back.
A new folder proves that per-user data was involved, but it does not identify which individual file was damaged. Keep the backup until you have confirmed that campaigns and settings are usable.
How to recover from a graphics-setting crash
If the game stopped launching immediately after changing a graphics option, use the configuration file instead of repeatedly starting the game with the bad setting.
- Close Steam and the game.
- Find
preferences.script.txtin the game’sscriptsdirectory. - Make a backup copy before editing.
- Open the file in a plain-text editor.
- Change only the setting that was recently modified, restoring a known-safe resolution or lower quality value. Keep the file’s punctuation and quotation marks intact.
- Save the file and launch the game. If it starts, change options gradually and restart between major changes.
Do not delete random lines or paste settings from another Total War title. A malformed script can create a new startup failure, which is why the backup matters.
What to do when the game freezes during loading or a battle
A freeze is not automatically proof that the computer has crashed. Wait briefly once, then note whether disk or CPU activity continues. If the window never recovers, end the process and work through the clean-installation sequence.
- Loading-screen freeze: verify files, remove mods, update the driver, and reset AppData. Corrupted assets and incompatible modifications are common software paths to test first.
- Battle-only freeze: lower resolution and quality, especially when large battles or detailed maps push video memory. Creative Assembly notes that the game may adjust graphics during loading to avoid out-of-memory crashes.
- Freeze after a graphics change: restore the previous value in
preferences.script.txtbefore changing anything else. - Freeze with a black window but active audio: select the dedicated GPU, disable Steam Overlay, and test security exclusions; these steps isolate rendering and interception conflicts.
There is no published authoritative crash, freeze, or black-screen rate for Total War remasters, so a symptom cannot be assigned a reliable percentage or single universal cause.
Black screen after pressing Play: a focused decision path
Use the same remedies as a crash, but record exactly when the display goes black.

When should you stop troubleshooting and contact support?
Escalate after you have tested a verified, unmodded installation with current Windows and graphics drivers and the problem still occurs. Do not reinstall repeatedly without collecting details; the support team needs a reproducible description.
Record these facts
- The exact error text, including capitalization or error codes.
- Whether the failure occurs at launch, in the menu, while loading, in a campaign, or in a battle.
- Whether the screen is black, the application is frozen, or Windows reports that it stopped responding.
- Your Windows edition, GPU model, and whether the computer has integrated and dedicated graphics.
- Every test already completed: verification, mod removal, updates, GPU selection, overlay and security tests, Visual C++ repair, AppData reset, and settings recovery.
Attach the crash report
Look in %AppData%RoamingThe Creative Assembly<game>crash_report and attach the relevant report when contacting SEGA Support. Include the report created closest to the failure and describe what you were doing when it occurred. Exact evidence is more useful than a general statement that the game “keeps crashing.”
