How to fix crashes, black screens, and launch problems in Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition on PCSX2

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition does not have a native Windows version covered by the available evidence. On a PC, the troubleshooting cases here involve the PlayStation 2 release running in PCSX2. That distinction matters: a failure in PCSX2, a bad disc image, a Windows runtime, and a game-specific fault can look like the same black screen.

Use a symptom-led process rather than a “magic” graphics setting. Record your PCSX2 revision, Windows or Linux version, game region, renderer, GPU and driver, and the exact moment of failure. Then update PCSX2, verify the game image, fix emulator-level Windows problems, and test the narrow workaround that matches your symptom.

Know which failure you are diagnosing

There are three different layers in this setup:

  • PCSX2 itself: the emulator may fail to open, crash while opening settings, or stop with a Windows dependency error.
  • The game image: an incomplete or corrupted dump can leave a title on a black screen or prevent it from loading correctly.
  • Midnight Club 3 during execution: the game may reach an opening video, a menu transition, or a race and then halt.

A black screen while a game is loading is not automatically the same as a black screen during a normal transition. Likewise, a crash before the PCSX2 window appears is not evidence that the game itself is defective. Identify the layer before changing renderer or game settings.

Capture the details before changing anything

Write down the following while the problem is reproducible:

  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
  • PCSX2 revision or version number.
  • Operating system and, on Windows, whether the system is Windows 11 or another release.
  • Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition region and edition.
  • Graphics renderer selected in PCSX2.
  • GPU model and installed driver version.
  • The exact point of failure: emulator startup, settings window, game boot, Rockstar San Diego intro, another opening FMV, race loading, or the “go to menus” transition.
  • Whether RetroAchievements, savestates, or a particular memory-card save is involved.
  • Any visible error text, including a Windows DLL name, a FIFO assertion, a GSUploadQueue assertion, or connectivity error 12001.

Those details let you compare like with like. Reports that sound identical can involve different operating systems, renderers, revisions, saves, and failure points.

A symptom-to-test map

Observed symptom Most useful first test What the evidence supports
PCSX2 crashes while opening settings or shows a launch error Update the GPU driver; if the message names MSVCP140.dll, install the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft PCSX2’s Windows troubleshooting names outdated GPU drivers and the missing Microsoft runtime for these emulator-level failures
Game stays on a black screen or does not load correctly Update PCSX2, then use the game’s Properties > Summary > Verify control PCSX2 says a black or non-loading title usually indicates a corrupted or incomplete dump
Crash occurs in opening FMVs, with RetroAchievements enabled and error 12001 Temporarily disable RetroAchievements and repeat the same boot A single Windows 11 report connected those conditions; it is a diagnostic test, not a universal fix
Black screen and FIFO error after choosing “go to menus” Check whether a savestate or one particular save is involved, then verify the image The report and maintainer discussion do not prove that save history is the cause
GSUploadQueue assertion with hardware rendering Record renderer, GPU, driver, operating system and PCSX2 revision before trying a controlled renderer comparison One Arch Linux/AMD report is evidence of a configuration-specific issue, not a general instruction to switch renderers

Update PCSX2 before game-specific troubleshooting

PCSX2’s general troubleshooting guidance puts an emulator update first. A compatibility fix may already exist in a newer revision, and changing several game settings on an old build makes later diagnosis harder.

  1. Close the game and PCSX2.
  2. Install or replace PCSX2 with a current official build appropriate for your operating system.
  3. Start the updated build without importing experimental per-game changes from an older setup unless you need them for comparison.
  4. Boot Midnight Club 3 once with the same renderer and normal settings so you can tell whether the update alone changed the symptom.
  5. If the failure remains, continue with image verification and the symptom-specific branch below. Keep the old revision available only as a comparison point; do not treat an older compatibility-wiki recommendation as automatically correct for a current build.

Do not assume that a setting mentioned in an old forum post applies to every revision. The compatibility wiki contains version-specific and historical advice, including a warning about changing settings during a race in older versions. Check the current emulator behavior before applying such advice.

Verify the game image and redump when verification fails

If PCSX2 opens but Midnight Club 3 remains black or fails to load, check the image before hunting for renderer combinations. In PCSX2, select the game, open Properties, choose the Summary page, and run Verify.

  1. Open the game list in PCSX2 and select your Midnight Club 3 entry.
  2. Open Properties.
  3. Choose Summary.
  4. Use Verify and wait for the check to finish.
  5. If verification fails, create a new dump from your own disc using your own equipment and use that image for testing.

A failed verification is a reason to replace the image, not to download a supposedly “fixed” ISO from an untrusted site. Keep the disc region and edition consistent with the image you are testing. Do not confuse the game image with PCSX2: updating the emulator cannot repair bad sectors or missing data in a dump.

If verification succeeds, retain the result with your diagnostic notes and move to the branch that matches the exact failure point. Verification does not establish that every later crash is an emulator bug; it simply removes one common loading failure from the list.

When PCSX2 itself will not open or crashes in settings

Update the graphics driver for emulator-level crashes

PCSX2’s Windows troubleshooting identifies outdated GPU drivers as a possible cause when the emulator crashes while opening settings or reports a particular launch failure. Update the driver using the current instructions from your GPU manufacturer, reboot if the installer requires it, and then test PCSX2 before changing game-specific options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the driver version you tested. If a newer driver changes the result, that is useful evidence about the host environment; it does not prove that Midnight Club 3 requires a special driver.

Resolve a missing MSVCP140.dll message

When Windows explicitly reports that MSVCP140.dll is missing, install the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official distribution channel. Choose the package that matches the 64-bit PCSX2 build, complete the installation, and reopen PCSX2.

This remedy is for the named runtime error. Installing a runtime when the emulator is already opening will not address a later in-game black screen, FIFO assertion, or FMV crash.

Symptom-specific fixes inside Midnight Club 3

Stuck on a black screen during boot or loading

First establish whether PCSX2 is responsive and whether the black screen occurs before the game’s first visible content. If PCSX2 itself is stable, the evidence-supported sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use the updated PCSX2 build.
  2. Run the game-image verification described above.
  3. If verification fails, redump your own disc and retest.
  4. If verification passes, repeat the boot while noting the region, renderer and exact revision.

Do not label a normal pause or transition as a failed boot without checking whether audio, the emulator frame counter, or input response continues. Conversely, if the emulator stops responding and produces an assertion or host crash, preserve the exact message; that moves the case into a different branch.

Crashes during the opening FMVs

Issue #14390, opened May 3, 2026, describes a crash during the Rockstar San Diego intro on Windows 11 with PCSX2 revision 2.7.309. The report’s author later connected the crash to RetroAchievements being enabled at the same time as connectivity error 12001.

Use that information only as a controlled test:

  1. Record whether RetroAchievements is enabled and whether 12001 appears.
  2. Temporarily disable RetroAchievements.
  3. Boot the same verified image and watch the same opening FMV.
  4. Re-enable the feature only after you have established whether it changes this particular failure.

This is a single-user report, not proof that RetroAchievements causes every startup-video crash. If your crash happens without that feature or without error 12001, do not infer that the reported workaround applies. Continue by checking the image, revision, renderer, driver and operating system.

Black screen when returning to menus

Issue #11289, opened May 22, 2024, reports a black-screen halt followed by a FIFO error when the player selected “go to menus.” During the discussion, a maintainer asked whether savestates were being used and recommended verifying the game image. The reporter also distinguished the affected save from a save that had not left PCSX2.

  • Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
  • Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
  • 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

For this symptom, make the save path part of the experiment without declaring it the cause:

  1. Write down whether you used a savestate, a memory-card save, or a save that had also been used on original hardware.
  2. Reproduce the menu transition from a clean boot, if possible, rather than loading the same savestate immediately.
  3. Test the verified image and keep the exact FIFO text.
  4. Compare the result with another save only if you can do so without overwriting the original evidence.

The report does not establish that a save created on original hardware, a savestate, or a particular save format is generally responsible. Treat those as variables that help isolate this one failure.

Hardware-renderer crashes and a GSUploadQueue assertion

Issue #10048 describes a GSUploadQueue assertion in one Arch Linux/AMD configuration using hardware rendering. It is useful because it shows that renderer, operating system and GPU can matter together; it is not a reason for every player to switch to software rendering or to a particular backend.

If your crash mentions GSUploadQueue or occurs only with hardware rendering:

  • Capture the complete assertion text.
  • Record the Arch Linux or other distribution version, GPU model, driver, renderer and PCSX2 revision.
  • Repeat once with the same image and save so the comparison is controlled.
  • Check current PCSX2 compatibility and issue information for your exact combination.

Change one variable at a time. A renderer change that makes the game boot is a useful workaround for your configuration, not a universal Midnight Club 3 setting.

How to interpret older FIFO reports and compatibility advice

A 2022 forum report also described a VIF FIFO assertion after returning to menus. That demonstrates a recurring report pattern, but the thread does not establish a broadly validated resolution. Use it to recognize the symptom, not to copy an unqualified setting change.

The compatibility wiki is community-maintained and includes historical, version-specific caveats. Advice written for an older PCSX2 revision can be obsolete or can apply only during a particular race or menu transition. Compare the revision named in the advice with the revision you are running, and preserve a reproducible baseline before experimenting.

Build a clean escalation report

If the supported checks do not resolve the crash, a concise report is more useful than a list of guessed fixes. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PCSX2 revision and whether it is a current official build.
  • Operating system, GPU, driver version and renderer.
  • Midnight Club 3 edition, region and image-verification result.
  • The exact failure phrase: “stuck on a black screen,” “does not load correctly,” “crashes when opening settings,” “crashes during bootup videos,” or “go to menus,” as applicable.
  • Whether the failure is reproducible from a clean boot and whether a savestate or memory-card save changes it.
  • Full assertion or Windows error text, including MSVCP140.dll, FIFO, GSUploadQueue or 12001 when present.
  • Any controlled test that changed the outcome, such as disabling RetroAchievements or changing the renderer.

Avoid bundling several changes into one test. If you update PCSX2, replace the image, change the renderer and load a different save simultaneously, you cannot tell which variable mattered.

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder

  • Assuming a native PC release: these instructions concern the PlayStation 2 release in PCSX2, not a Windows executable.
  • Downloading an unofficial BIOS or game image: use your own legally obtained materials and redump your disc when verification fails; an untrusted download can add corruption and legal risk.
  • Applying one “best” setting to every system: the documented cases involve different revisions, operating systems, GPUs, renderers and failure points.
  • Treating an individual issue report as a guarantee: the FMV/RetroAchievements report, menu/FIFO report and GSUploadQueue report are configuration-specific evidence.
  • Ignoring the host error: a missing Microsoft runtime or outdated GPU driver must be fixed at Windows level before game settings can be evaluated.
  • Changing settings during a race because an old guide says to: compatibility advice can be tied to an older revision and a particular moment in the game.

When to stop changing settings

Stop experimenting when you have a current PCSX2 build, a verified image, an updated host driver or runtime where applicable, and a precisely documented failure that remains reproducible. At that point, preserve the logs and issue details instead of cycling through random renderer combinations. The most useful next step is a current PCSX2 compatibility or issue discussion that matches your exact revision, operating system, GPU, renderer and symptom.
