If a website suddenly looks narrow, stacked, or partially hidden when Chrome’s AI Mode is open, the page usually has not failed: the side panel is sharing the desktop window with it. First drag the panel’s edge inward to give the page more width, or close the panel. If the layout is still wrong, reset that site’s zoom with Ctrl + 0 on Windows or Linux, remove a saved zoom override, and only then consider resetting Chrome settings.
Why Chrome’s AI Mode makes a normal page look broken
Google describes AI Mode in Chrome as a side-by-side experience. Your webpage remains open while AI Mode appears in a side panel, and links opened from search can load in that panel instead of replacing the current page. Google’s April 16, 2026 announcement specifically describes clicked webpages opening “side-by-side with AI Mode” in desktop Chrome.

A side panel reduces the horizontal space available to the webpage. Responsive sites react to the narrower viewport by switching from a wide layout to a mobile or tablet layout: navigation may collapse, columns may stack, text may wrap onto more lines, and fixed elements may overlap. That viewport explanation follows from the documented side-by-side arrangement; it is not a Google measurement, and it does not mean every site has defective code.

AI Mode is rolling out gradually. It is not available to every account, language, region, Chrome release, or device, so the panel’s name, icon, resize handle, and close control can differ. The steps below describe the desktop Chrome behavior documented by Google and identify where a particular rollout may look different.

Choose the least disruptive fix first
| Symptom or goal | Use this action | What changes | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| You need AI Mode visible but the page is too narrow | Drag the panel boundary inward | AI Mode remains open while the webpage receives more width | Immediate; drag the boundary back later |
| You want the normal reading width back | Select Close at the panel’s top right | The side panel disappears | Immediate; reopen AI Mode if your Chrome build provides it |
| Only one site looks unusually large or tiny | Open Chrome’s menu, use Zoom, then choose a comfortable value; on Windows or Linux press Ctrl + 0 |
Page scale changes, not the panel itself | Easy to change again |
| The same domain keeps returning at the wrong scale | Remove that domain under Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Zoom levels | Chrome forgets the saved per-site zoom override | Local change; other sites are unaffected |
| Many sites are affected and Chrome settings changed unexpectedly | Use Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings | Several profile settings return to defaults | Broad; review extensions and preferences afterward |
Start at the top of the table. Resizing or closing the panel is safer than changing zoom, and a zoom change is safer than a profile-wide reset.
Make AI Mode narrower without closing it
This is the best choice when you still need the AI conversation, open-tab context, or file context while reading the page.
- Move the pointer to the boundary between the webpage and the AI Mode side panel.
- When the resize cursor or drag handle appears, select and hold it.
- Drag the boundary inward, toward the side of the panel, until the webpage has enough horizontal room.
- Release the handle and check the page’s navigation, columns, buttons, and text wrapping.
Google Chrome Help documents this control as: “To resize side panel: On the side of the panel, select and hold Drag.” The exact visual handle can vary during the gradual rollout, but it should be located on the panel’s edge rather than inside the webpage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you cannot find the drag handle
- Move slowly along the border where the page meets the panel; the active area can be narrow.
- Make sure the AI surface is actually a side panel, not a full-tab AI Mode view. A full tab has no adjacent webpage boundary to drag.
- Check that the Chrome window is on the desktop rather than a narrow window or split-screen arrangement. The available width may be too small for the handle to be obvious.
- If the control is absent in your account or release, use the panel’s Close control instead. Availability and labels are not uniform during the rollout.
Close the AI Mode side panel
Closing the panel restores the webpage to the width available in the Chrome window.

- Look at the top-right corner of the AI Mode panel.
- Select Close.
- Wait for the webpage to reflow, then scroll from the top to confirm that navigation and fixed elements have repositioned.
Google’s Chrome side-panel instructions identify the top-right Close control as the way to close a side panel. If you do not see the word “Close,” look for the control that performs the same close action in your rollout; icon and label treatments may differ.
When a search result was opened beside AI Mode
Google’s AI Mode help says that, when a link was opened in the panel from a full-page search result, closing that link can expand the AI Mode experience into a full tab. That is different from simply returning the original webpage to its former width: the exact result depends on how the page was opened and on the Chrome version receiving the feature.
If your aim is to read the original page at full width, close the panel and then inspect the tab strip. If Chrome has moved AI Mode into a full tab, select the webpage’s tab rather than repeatedly closing browser tabs that contain information you still need.
Reset a zoom level that is magnifying the problem
A narrowed viewport and a saved zoom value can combine to make a page appear much more damaged than the panel alone would cause. For example, a site already enlarged above its default scale has fewer CSS pixels available for navigation and columns once the side panel opens.

Return the current page to its default scale
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu.
- Find Zoom.
- Choose a comfortable value, or on Windows and Linux press
Ctrl + 0to return everything on the page to its default size. - Reload the page if its layout does not immediately repaint, then test it with the AI panel resized or closed.
Chrome documents Ctrl + 0 as “Return everything on the page to default size.” This shortcut resets page scale; it does not resize or close AI Mode.
Remove a remembered zoom override for one domain
- Open Chrome’s Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security.
- Select Site settings.
- Open Additional content settings.
- Select Zoom levels.
- Find the affected site and remove its entry.
- Return to the site and test it again at the default scale.
Use the per-site removal when one domain repeatedly comes back too large or too small. It avoids changing the reading scale you intentionally use elsewhere.
Determine whether the site or Chrome is responsible
Do not reset Chrome globally just because one page wraps badly beside AI Mode. Test the scope of the failure first.
- Leave the side panel open and visit another unrelated website.
- Observe whether its navigation and content also become unusably narrow.
- Close the panel and compare both sites at the same browser-window size.
- Reset the zoom on the site that fails, then reload it.
Only one site fails
A one-domain failure points toward that site’s responsive layout, a site-specific zoom entry, or a page element that does not adapt well to a reduced viewport. Keep the intervention local: remove the domain’s zoom override, reload, and use the panel at a narrower width or closed state when reading that site. The browser controls can restore width and scale, but they cannot repair the site’s own layout rules.

Several sites fail in the same way
If unrelated sites all become cramped while the panel is open and recover when it closes, the shared cause is the reduced viewport. Resize or close the panel rather than changing every site’s zoom. If sites remain wrong even after the panel is closed and zoom is reset, continue to the profile-settings fallback.
The page is broken even with AI Mode closed
That result separates the side-panel issue from the page’s normal rendering. Confirm the browser window is not unusually narrow, check the site’s zoom entry, and reload. A Chrome settings reset is appropriate only when the problem spans sites or settings have changed unexpectedly; it is not a substitute for fixing a single site’s own responsive behavior.
Use Chrome’s settings reset only for profile-wide problems
A reset is a broad fallback for persistent, multi-site problems or unexpected Chrome configuration changes. It is not required for an ordinary side-panel layout shift.

What to check after the reset
- Verify that the affected site opens at its expected default zoom.
- Check whether an extension or theme that altered page appearance is still enabled.
- Review startup pages and the default search engine if Chrome’s opening behavior changed.
- Revisit content settings that your work or accessibility setup depends on.
- Open a few unrelated sites with AI Mode closed and open to confirm whether the problem is profile-wide or limited to the original domain.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Use this order when you want a repeatable fix rather than trial and error:
- Confirm the trigger: note whether the layout changes only when AI Mode is visible.
- Reclaim width: drag the panel boundary inward.
- Remove the panel: select Close if the page needs full reading width.
- Normalize scale: use the Zoom menu or
Ctrl + 0on Windows/Linux. - Clear a local override: remove the domain under Zoom levels if the issue returns on that site.
- Compare another site: decide whether the failure is local or profile-wide.
- Reset broadly only if justified: restore Chrome’s original settings when multiple sites remain affected or settings changed unexpectedly.
After each step, perform the same check: inspect the page header, primary navigation, main content columns, buttons, and any fixed or sticky element. This reveals whether the change corrected the viewport, the page scale, or neither.
Trade-offs: keep AI Mode open or reclaim the page
Keep AI Mode open
Use a narrower panel when you need to ask questions about open tabs or files while reading. The cost is a smaller webpage viewport, so a responsive layout may remain in its compact breakpoint even after you adjust zoom.
Close AI Mode
Closing is preferable for wide tables, multi-column dashboards, image editors, and any page whose controls become difficult to reach. It gives the webpage the browser width that was previously allocated to the panel.
Change one site’s zoom
A local zoom adjustment is useful when text size, rather than panel width, is the dominant problem. Removing the saved entry later keeps the change from affecting that domain permanently.
Reset Chrome settings
A profile reset can clear unexpected configuration interactions, but it also affects extensions, themes, startup pages, search settings, and content settings. Treat it as recovery for a broad problem, not routine maintenance after opening AI Mode.
Why the controls may not match these steps
Google says AI Mode is not available to everyone or every device and is rolling out gradually. Account, language, region, device, and Chrome-release differences can change whether the feature appears as a side panel, a full tab, or a differently labeled surface. The underlying choices remain the same: recover horizontal space, restore page scale, isolate a single-site problem, and reserve a full settings reset for persistent profile-wide behavior.
If your Chrome build has no AI Mode control, do not force a setting change based on screenshots from another account. If a panel appears but lacks a visible resize handle, close it and use the documented zoom and site-settings paths. Recheck after Chrome updates because rollout stages can alter labels and placement.
Quick Recap
When the page still looks wrong
- If closing AI Mode fixes the page immediately, use the panel only at a width that leaves the site in its usable responsive layout.
- If
Ctrl + 0fixes the page, inspect Zoom levels so the unwanted scale does not return. - If only one domain remains broken after its zoom entry is removed, the site’s own responsive code is the likely limiting factor.
- If many domains remain broken with AI Mode closed and default zoom restored, use the Chrome settings reset and then review the settings it changes.
- If behavior differs between accounts or devices, treat that as rollout variation rather than evidence that the webpage itself changed.
Key points to remember
- AI Mode intentionally shares the desktop browser window with the webpage, so the page may cross a responsive breakpoint.
- Dragging the panel edge inward is the quickest way to keep AI Mode visible while giving the page more room.
- The top-right Close control restores the width allocated to the side panel; links opened from full-page search may instead expand AI Mode into a full tab when closed.
- A saved site zoom can amplify cramped layouts;
Ctrl + 0restores default page scale on Windows and Linux. - Remove one domain’s Zoom levels entry for a local fix, and reserve Chrome’s reset-settings path for persistent, profile-wide problems.
- Controls and availability can differ because Google is rolling AI Mode out gradually.
