That sequence helps distinguish a damaged file from a local audio-device problem, an OBS routing or level issue, and a problem that appears only after encoding or delivery.
Trace the crackle through the signal path
Use the same passage for each comparison, preferably one where the crackle is easy to hear. Listen with headphones if available, and avoid changing several settings at once; otherwise you may not know which change mattered.
- Play the original file outside OBS. If it crackles there too, start with the file or its legitimate source. The stream configuration is not the first place to look.
- Play it on the streaming computer. If the file is clean elsewhere but crackles through the computer, check the player, operating-system output device, device connection, and driver path.
- Check the OBS source and mixer. Confirm the intended source is active and its meter responds. For a single local file, OBS Media Source supports MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV and includes a Loop property. For a playlist, VLC Video supports a Loop Playlist option. These repeat playback; they do not repair corrupt or poorly encoded audio. OBS Media Sources
- Compare OBS monitoring and a short recording. Listen to the signal as early as practical, then listen through OBS Audio Monitoring and play back a short recording. OBS recommends checking audio at the device and again when it reaches OBS. Watch the mixer: levels approaching the red zone may indicate clipping. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
- Listen to the YouTube playback. If the original, local playback, and OBS output are clean but YouTube sounds bad, investigate encoder compatibility, stream health, and the playback device or network used to watch the stream. Do not replace a clean source file based only on the YouTube replay.
Fix the issue at the stage where it begins
If the original file crackles
Inspect the file and its source. If you have a clean, legitimate original, try playing that copy. If the noise is embedded in the only available file, replace it or re-export it from its legitimate source if you can. OBS loop settings and YouTube encoder settings cannot remove noise already present in the audio.
If only local playback crackles
Try another player or output device, then check the connection and the operating-system device and driver path. Change one item at a time and replay the same passage. If local playback becomes clean, continue the test in OBS; if not, there is little reason to tune YouTube settings yet.

If the sound becomes noisy in OBS
- Confirm the intended source is active and its mixer meter responds. For one file, check Media Source and its Loop property; for a playlist, check VLC Video and Loop Playlist. OBS Media Sources
- Check for duplicate capture. OBS warns that Audio Input/Output Capture can cause echo when the same device is also selected under Settings → Audio. If a scene captures the device directly, disable the duplicate global selection where appropriate. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
- Monitor the signal at more than one point and check that the mixer level is not approaching the red zone. A short recording helps determine whether the noise is in OBS output or only in the monitoring route. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
If OBS sounds clean but YouTube does not
Review the encoder’s audio format and sample-rate options against YouTube’s published live recommendations, then run a representative test and monitor stream health. Compare the replay on another playback device or network before concluding the encoder is at fault. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and 44.1 kHz for stereo; it lists 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. A stereo sleep-music stream should be checked against the stereo recommendation, but do not change the sample rate blindly without considering the source, device, and encoder chain. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Use the same type of audio and video activity you expect during the actual broadcast. YouTube Live encoder settings

Separate crackling from overload and dropped frames
Crackling heard in the original file or local OBS monitoring points to a different part of the chain than a network delivery symptom. OBS describes dropped frames as an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate. That can disrupt delivery, but it does not explain crackling that is already audible before the stream leaves the computer. OBS: Dropped frames
If the problem appears only during sustained system load or alongside encoding overload, reduce unnecessary scene and source workload and close other heavy processes for a test. OBS recommends Media Source or VLC Source for audio/video files; its performance guidance does not establish overload as the cause of every audio crackle. Run a test before leaving a sleep stream on
- Play a representative section of the loop and listen to the original file.
- Run it through the intended local playback and OBS source, checking mixer activity and monitoring.
- Make a short recording and listen back for the same crackling.
- Test the live encoder settings with audio and video similar to the real stream, then monitor YouTube stream health and playback.
