There is no single OBS setting that fixes every crackling 24/7 lofi stream. First compare a local recording with the live stream, then use the audio path, OBS log, sample rates, mixer levels, and system load to narrow down the cause. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.
First find out where the crackle occurs
Use the same OBS scene and audio source for a short local recording, then compare it with the live stream. OBS recommends testing settings before going live: OBS streaming guide.

- Both the recording and stream crackle: Start with the source, capture path, sample rates, levels, and computer load.
- The recording is clean but viewers hear crackling on the stream: Check whether the stream and recording use different audio tracks or processing. This comparison points to a different path, but does not prove the cause.
- Only your monitoring sounds bad: Check the monitoring device and route separately; a monitoring fault does not necessarily mean the audience hears the same artifact.
Note when the problem starts, which source is active, whether it is continuous or intermittent, and whether you hear echo as well as crackling. Those details help distinguish distortion from duplicate capture or timing problems.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check OBS logs and sample rates
Compare the sample rate selected in OBS with the formats used by the actual playback and capture devices, including any audio-routing software between them. A mismatch can cause drift or distortion. OBS Analyzer recommends 48 kHz in its diagnostic guidance; treat that as a consistent setting to test, not a guaranteed cure. See the OBS Log Analyzer.

- In OBS, open Settings → Audio and note the selected sample rate and devices.
- Check the operating system’s audio format for the devices actually used by the stream. Also check any virtual cable, mixer, or routing application in the signal chain.
- If rates differ, choose a consistent rate—48 kHz is the recommendation in OBS Analyzer’s guidance—and change one setting at a time.
- Restart OBS or reinitialize the affected application or device, then record and test again.
Review the OBS log or paste it into OBS Analyzer. A sample-rate mismatch message is a useful clue; so is a maximum audio buffering warning. The Analyzer associates maximum buffering with high system load and possible source interruption, but also notes incorrect device timestamps as a possible contributor. It is not proof of one particular fault. Restarting OBS can reset buffering.
Rule out duplicate audio capture
A device can enter the mix twice—for example, once as a global device in Settings → Audio and again as an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source in a scene. OBS warns that capturing the same device through both routes can create echo. Inspect the active scene and global audio settings, then disable one route for a controlled test. See OBS audio sources.

OBS’s device-timestamps option is Windows-only. Consider testing it only when the relevant device or log symptoms suggest a timestamp issue; it is not a universal crackling fix. Change the setting deliberately, restart or reinitialize as needed, and compare a new recording.
Check for clipping at the mixer
Watch the OBS mixer while the artifact occurs. The final stream or recording audio must stay below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion, according to OBS’s audio mixer guidance. If peaks reach or exceed 0 dBFS, lower the source or mixer gain and retest. Avoid compensating for a quiet source by pushing the final mix into clipping; crackling can have causes other than excessive level.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Check system load before changing stream bitrate
If maximum buffering warnings appear alongside heavy CPU or other system load, close unnecessary workloads and test again. OBS documents resource and performance issues that can affect rendering and encoding; the Analyzer separately links maximum audio buffering with high load. Video encoding overload and audio crackling are not automatically the same problem, so use the log and recording comparison rather than assuming one explains the other. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
Network-dropped frames are a different symptom from crackling audio. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection-stability or bitrate issue. Do not change bitrate as an assumed cure for an audio artifact; investigate network settings when OBS reports dropped frames or the stream visibly stalls. See OBS dropped frames troubleshooting.

Isolate hardware only if the evidence points there
If the crackle persists after checking configuration, levels, and load, test the audio path one component at a time: source, interface or capture device, port, and routing driver. If the fault follows one component across otherwise controlled tests, investigate its driver and connection. USB bandwidth has been suggested in an older OBS forum discussion for a particular capture-card setup, but that anecdote does not establish a general remedy or justify buying a hub or controller card without testing: OBS forum discussion.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next | Controlled action |
|---|---|---|
| Crackle in both local recording and stream | Sample-rate mismatch, duplicate capture, clipping, buffering, or system load | Check one branch at a time and make a new recording after each change. |
| Clean recording, but stream-only complaints | Whether stream and recording use different tracks, sources, or processing | Compare the active audio paths; do not treat the recording as proof that every stream path is clean. |
| Maximum audio buffering in the log or Analyzer | System load and device timestamps | Close unnecessary workloads; restart OBS to reset buffering. Investigate timestamps only when relevant to the device symptoms. |
| Echo along with crackling | The same device selected globally and captured again in a scene | Disable one capture route temporarily and compare. |
| Mixer peaks at or above 0 dBFS | Source and mixer gain | Reduce gain until peaks remain below 0 dBFS, then retest. |
| Dropped frames or stream stalls | Network stability and bitrate | Follow OBS’s dropped-frame troubleshooting separately from audio diagnosis. |
| Problem follows one interface, port, or routing driver | That component’s connection and driver | Retest with a different path if available before considering hardware changes. |
Keep the stream running without leaving a computer on

Frequently Asked Questions
Will setting everything to 48 kHz always stop crackling?
No. It is a recommended rate in OBS Analyzer guidance, but the cause depends on your audio path and symptoms.
