Copy the entire save folder, then work on a duplicate. On a dedicated server, recovery normally means replacing the damaged .arktribe with a matching .tribebak and restoring a map backup from the same period. In single-player, copy and rename the matching local backup. If the world loads but your survivor is no longer in the tribe, administrative commands can restore membership and ownership. Keep the original files because every rollback can remove progress made after the backup.

What a corrupted tribe file affects
ASA stores a tribe’s membership, ranks and many ownership relationships in a separate tribe file. A damaged file can make an otherwise healthy world appear to have lost its tribe: survivors may load outside the tribe, structures and tames may show the wrong owner, or the server may crash while loading the save. Replacing only the tribe file is therefore not always enough. The world, player profile and tribe data need to represent a compatible point in time.

Use this recovery order:
- Stop the server or exit the game completely.
- Preserve the complete save directory and the original files.
- Identify the tribe, player and map backups that belong together.
- Restore the smallest scope that can solve the problem.
- Test membership, ranks, structures and tames before allowing normal play.
Do not repeatedly overwrite the live save while guessing. Each launch can create a newer state and make it harder to identify the last known-good copy.
Know which ASA files you are repairing

File names and backup availability vary by platform and hosting setup. A dedicated server and a local Steam save do not use the same parent folder, so confirm that you are editing the save for the affected map rather than an old or different map.

Signs that the tribe file may be damaged
- The server crashes or hangs while loading a map after a tribe-related incident.
- The active
.arktribeis substantially smaller than its adjacent.tribebak. Nitrado identifies that size difference as a warning sign, not conclusive proof. - The file timestamp is newer than the last session in which the tribe was known to work.
- Several members, structures and tames lose their tribe relationship at the same time.
Compare file dates, sizes and your last known gameplay state before selecting a backup. A larger file is not automatically newer or correct; choose a copy that matches the map and the session you intend to restore.
Preserve the save before making any change
Backups are the difference between a reversible repair and permanent loss. Stop all writes first: shut down a dedicated server through its control panel, or quit ASA and wait until the process is closed for a local game.
- Copy the complete server save directory, not just the suspected tribe file. Include the map, player profiles, tribe files and any backup files.
- Place the untouched copy outside the live save directory, preferably on separate storage.
- Give the copy a useful name such as
BeforeTribeRepair_2026-10-18and record the map, server, time and files you plan to replace. - Work only on a second copy. Never rename, delete or edit the sole original.
For a local save, copy the entire ShooterGame/Saved/SavedArksLocal/<MapName>_WP folder. For a hosted server, use the host’s file-transfer method to download the complete save directory before editing. The backup should remain available even if the attempted repair fails.
Dedicated-server recovery
This procedure applies when you have file-transfer access and administrative control of the ASA server. The example path is the standard Nitrado layout; another host may expose an equivalent folder under a different root.

1. Stop the server and download the full save
Use the host control panel to stop the server, then copy the entire save directory through FTP or the host’s file manager. Do not replace files while the server is running; the process can rewrite the damaged state or leave a partial file.
2. Open the map’s live folder
Open:
/arksa/ShooterGame/Saved/SavedArks/WORLDNAME
Replace WORLDNAME with the actual world directory. If the server runs multiple maps or instances, verify the folder by checking its recent map and player files rather than assuming the first directory is correct.
3. Match the tribe backup
Find the affected tribe’s .arktribe and the corresponding .tribebak. Compare their timestamps and sizes with the last session in which the tribe was intact. Make another copy of both before moving anything. If there is no .tribebak, do not invent one by renaming an unrelated tribe file; move to the no-backup path described below.
4. Replace the active tribe file on a copy
- Move the suspected active
.arktribeout of the live folder into your preserved repair workspace. Do not delete it. - Copy the selected
.tribebakinto the live folder. - Rename the copied backup to the exact original
.arktribefilename, including capitalization and the full file name.
Do not rename the only backup in place. Keep one untouched copy so you can try an older backup if the first choice is inconsistent.

5. Restore a compatible map backup
Use the host’s Restore Backup control to select the newest map save that is consistent with the tribe backup’s date. A tribe file from one point in time paired with a much newer map can produce missing structures, ownership conflicts or another crash. If the selected map backup does not load correctly, stop the server again and try an older map backup rather than mixing files indefinitely.
6. Start and test in a controlled way
Start the server and join with an affected survivor. Check, in order:

- tribe name, rank and founder/admin status;
- ownership and access to key structures;
- ownership and behavior of important tames;
- other members’ ability to join and use tribe assets.
Record the backup date used and the result. If the server still crashes, stop it before attempting another restore and return to the preserved pre-repair copy.
Single-player and local-host recovery
Local recovery uses the same principle but works directly in the map folder. Exit ASA fully before opening the files.

- Open
ShooterGame/Saved/SavedArksLocal/<MapName>_WP. - Copy the complete
<MapName>_WPfolder to a separate location. - Identify whether the damaged item is the tribe’s
.arktribe, your.arkprofile, or the world.ark. - Move the active file aside into the backup copy. Do not overwrite or delete it.
- Copy the selected
.tribebak,.profilebakor.bakinto the live folder. - Rename the copied file to the exact active name:
.arktribe,.arkprofileor.ark, as appropriate. - If present, evaluate
AntiCorruptionBackup.bakas another local recovery option, keeping the original first. - Launch ASA, load the map and test the tribe, character, structures and tames.
Restoring a local backup rolls the save back to the time that backup was created. Building, breeding, harvesting, deaths and other progress after that point can disappear. Keep the old folder until you have confirmed that the restored state is usable.

Prefer the narrowest option that addresses the fault. A tribe-file replacement is less disruptive than a map rollback, but only when the map and tribe backup represent compatible sessions.

A successful file restore can still leave a character outside the tribe. The official ARK community command reference documents commands for rejoining a targeted tribe, restoring leadership and taking ownership. These are administrative cheat commands: use them only where you have authority, and preserve the save first.

Command names alone do not grant authority. Authenticate as an administrator or enable the appropriate local administrative mode for your platform, then use the game’s console exactly as supported by that environment. Take screenshots or write down each command and target so you can reverse course using the preserved save if a target was wrong.
One-person tribe and merge warning
Tribe joins and merges change ownership. If your survivor is in a one-person tribe and joins another, the tribes must be merged to avoid losing ownership of structures and tames. Do not create a new tribe and assume that existing assets will automatically follow; resolve the membership state first, then verify ownership object by object.
When there is no usable .tribebak
If no tribe backup exists, deleting the damaged .arktribe does not rebuild the original tribe. It leaves players outside the tribe and removes the file-based membership state. The provider recovery guidance describes deleting the damaged file as the fallback in that situation, followed by administrative restoration of access to tribe items and tames. Treat this as a last resort:
- Stop the server and preserve the entire directory, including the damaged file.
- Check every dated host snapshot and older map backup before deleting anything.
- If none contains a usable tribe file, remove or quarantine the damaged file only on a working copy.
- Start the server and use the administrative commands above to rebuild membership and ownership.
- Document what could not be recovered, especially ranks, logs and ownership that were stored only in the missing file.
If the server still crashes or the map will not load, stop experimenting. Contact the server host with the preserved directory, map name, approximate failure time and backup dates, or submit an official ARK support request. Repeated overwrites can destroy the evidence a host needs to recover an older snapshot.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Editing while the server is online: the running process can overwrite your replacement. Stop it first.
- Backing up only the tribe file: a mismatched map can undo the repair. Copy the complete save directory.
- Deleting the only original: move files aside and retain untouched copies.
- Choosing by file size alone: use size as a corruption clue, then check timestamps and known gameplay state.
- Mixing dates: pair a tribe backup with a map backup from a compatible period.
- Testing with the wrong map folder: verify the world name and map-specific directory before replacing files.
- Using a broad ownership command casually: aim at the intended object and confirm the result after each command.
- Assuming an old automatic-backup feature still exists: historical ARK systems recorded automatic restore behavior, but that history does not guarantee a usable backup on every current ASA deployment.
What patch history does—and does not—tell you
The ARK Official Community Wiki records that ASA patch 26.8 “retroactively fixed a save game crash with corrupted tribe data.” That is relevant if your installation is older, but a crash fix is not a file-recovery service: it does not recreate a tribe file that has already been lost, and it does not guarantee that a particular server has a valid backup. Keep the repair focused on the files and snapshots actually present on your installation.
Prevent the next tribe-file loss
- Before major wipes, transfers or configuration changes, download a complete copy of the server save.
- Keep dated copies outside the live save directory so a failed restore cannot overwrite every backup.
- Record the map name, backup time and the tribe files included in each copy.
- After an update or unexpected crash, make a fresh copy before allowing extensive new play.
- Ensure someone with server access knows how to stop the server and retrieve files; relying on a single person slows recovery.
These measures do not prevent every corruption event, but they give you a known-good point from which to restore without guessing.
